[00:00:00] Hey everybody, it's Chris. If you're a sports fan like me or you're just a fan of a great story
[00:00:05] you gotta check out Pressbox Access, a sports history podcast hosted by Todd Jones.
[00:00:11] Todd sits down with fellow sports writers who experienced first-hand some of the biggest sports moments of the past 50 years
[00:00:17] and they share some of the stories behind the stories, some of which they've only told to each other.
[00:00:23] What I personally love are the wild stories that you might not hear so much about on Sports Center over the years.
[00:00:28] Like when Indiana-based sports journalist Bob Kravitz recounts the time Bobby Knight showed up make it to an office meeting with him
[00:00:34] and then banned him from the Hoosiers locker room for the next three years because Bob wrote a story he didn't like.
[00:00:39] Or when Alexander Wolf tells a story about going out on the town in Chicago with Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra in the middle of a Bull's Playoff series.
[00:00:46] Or, when Dan Wetzel talks about what it was like to be in the media room, when Temple Basketball coach John Cheney stormed into UMass coach John Calapari's press conference after a game and threatened to kill him.
[00:00:57] These wild and fun stories paired with stories about real sports greatness, you know, like the 1970 Steelers being the greatest NFL dynasty ever.
[00:01:06] Or the legendary rivalry between Larry Bird, Magic Johnson. And even the impact of protests for social justice issues in sports make press box access a show you should check out.
[00:01:16] Press box access is part of the Evergreen Podcast family and it's available all the places you get your pods and you can also find press box access on YouTube. Go check it out!

[00:02:29] Chris the Elite 8 have now become the final four.
[00:02:36] Oh boy! And it's some big matchups that we had going into this final match up, these final four.
[00:02:43] So let's get right to it. This is what people are here they're excited for.
[00:02:49] I'd say the biggest match up and the tightest race was Green Day basket case against Weezer Buddy Holly.
[00:02:59] This was the one where I thought whoever emerged from this will win at all.
[00:03:05] I know I cast my ballot. I'm interested to hear who you cast your ballot format.
[00:03:12] I went with Green Day on this one. The dukey album is very important to me, probably more important to me than the blue album in the grand scheme.
[00:03:21] How about you who did you cast your ballot for?
[00:03:24] Oh it was a tough decision. I also went Green Day on this one.
[00:03:28] Well I think the audience did as well 53% to 47%.
[00:03:33] So pretty damn close. Oh I forgot to mention 144 votes that came in this week for these.
[00:03:41] That is 30 more votes than last week. So these are getting more and more popular every week.
[00:03:51] I love how people despite what it says straight up when I make the posts about voting and stuff.
[00:03:58] Boy now that none of them are one hit wonders.
[00:04:00] Yeah! Like do you know how to read? Read what it is. It's 1994 singles. This has nothing to do with one hit wonders.
[00:04:08] We're a music podcast first. A one hit wonder podcast second as far as I'm concerned.
[00:04:13] We're allowed to talk about whatever we want on this podcast.
[00:04:16] Yes, we do a weekly episode about a one hit wonder but hey sometimes we're allowed to talk about other things too.
[00:04:22] Exactly and speaking of talking about other things man this was another tough match up.
[00:04:27] We had the Beastie boys sabotage against Beckalooser.
[00:04:31] You know I know that I cast my vote for sabotage but I could see the people voting leaning loser.
[00:04:45] I think I voted loser on this one. Just because in my mind there is no song that defines 1994 to me like the song loser.
[00:04:58] Like that song just captures Gen X in a single song.
[00:05:05] Both of them I think have like Beastie boys sabotage is the iconic music video but Beckalooser is one of my favorite music videos of all time because it's so strange and solo budget.
[00:05:16] And like we could have made the Beckalooser video.
[00:05:19] Like there was something that was like cool and inspirational about like seeing like a not like a dude who wasn't very attractive wasn't very talented at wrapping the song as simple as hell.
[00:05:32] The video is cheap as hell and somehow it was like a juggernaut song on on MTV like there was something so cool about it to me.
[00:05:43] I don't know man. I think Beck was a little bit of a 90s cutie.
[00:05:47] He's saying he's not attractive but I think he's like the most 90s guy ever and maybe that was attractive to a lot of people.
[00:05:55] That is fair. Well people leaned more your way than mine.
[00:05:59] 64% on the Beastie boys 36% to Beck.
[00:06:05] Wow! I wasn't expecting that big of a landslide. The fact that it was that big of a landslide in a contest where I thought it would be a lot closer.
[00:06:16] Makes me wonder if Beastie boys could upset Green Day.
[00:06:21] Well I'll tell you this right now that's not even the biggest upset of these four.
[00:06:26] Oh boy. So that means though that in that quadrant of the final four we have Green Day basket case versus Beastie boys sabotage to go to the finals.
[00:06:38] I mean common sense to me says Green Day.
[00:06:43] I think I think that because of the longevity of Green Day not that Beastie boys didn't have their longevity but I mean Green Day still a band now and has maintained a huge following.
[00:06:59] I guess Beastie boys have too.
[00:07:01] I would say here's the only thing that I would say about Beastie boys sabotage.
[00:07:06] And again, I love this song.
[00:07:10] It is not exactly the best example of what the Beastie boys traditional sound is like it is an outlier in their singles and discography in all honesty but maybe that's why it has so much staying power at the same time is that it doesn't sound like really anything else that they were releasing a single at that time.
[00:07:31] Now if you listen to their full albums they always had this like kind of punk rock thing mixed into a lot of their albums but when you're just looking at the singles that people know by the Beastie boys it is a big ass outlier surrounded by like sure shot and intergalactic and fight for your right and shake your rum and hey ladies and what you want in all those singles.
[00:07:55] I would actually argue that sabotage is the more punk rock of the two songs.
[00:08:02] Oh, I 100% agree but that's also because Beastie boys was coming from the 80s hardcore scene and kind of throwing back to that sound where Green Day was definitely from as much as people hate the term pop punk and I think Green Day is among them.
[00:08:19] Like you can't deny that lookout records was way more of a pop punk sound than a hardcore punk sounds with the bands that they were signing they just cut their teeth in a more poppy version of punk.
[00:08:31] Yeah and when you listen to Duky it's definitely a very slick production it sounds great it still sounds great today whereas the recording of sabotage there's certain aspects of it that are pretty raw.
[00:08:45] Yeah. It really sounds pretty raw even if that was somewhat manufactured in the studio or something just the vocal delivery the fact that the whole song is one chord.
[00:08:55] Yeah, well you know it's so here's two things I'll say first of all I've said this a million times and Somniac is my favorite Green Day album and a large chunk of it is that it's probably the most raw punk rock sound that they ever got in a recording because they were clearly very pissed off at the time they are making that album but also I believe that the album is a great song.
[00:09:14] I believe that El Communications was the second album that the Beastie Boys produced in their little home studio so maybe that isn't an intentionally raw sounding thing but it's you know three days still yes three dudes still feel in their way out through self production.
[00:09:34] Okay, I didn't know much about the making or I should say I don't know anything about the making of El Communications.
[00:09:42] So yeah, if you look through if you look through the book for El Communications like the CD book or whatever it's a lot of pictures of them in this very make shift small studio because I think that that's where they did check your head and
[00:10:01] the El Communications were literally like they built a little studio for themselves to like record and do stuff with.
[00:10:08] I like that you make it plural like what I call Walmart I call Walmart wall marks yeah, I like that you call it El Communications.
[00:10:15] Yeah, El Communication. All right so let's go to the next side of this the next match up we had people people were very upset when I implied that this could be a run away when I said
[00:10:30] counting crows Mr. Jones versus Tom Petty in the heartbreakers Mary Jane's list and so there's a lot of people that said don't you underestimate the power of Tom Petty.
[00:10:39] I was worried about the power of Tom Petty there's a lot of Tom Petty love out there and for as much counting crows love as I have and my friends have
[00:10:49] I know there's some really that Adam Duritz his vocal delivery and whatever it can be very polarizing and some people that really dislike counting crows so I was a little bit worried about this one should I have been.
[00:11:03] I don't know so you put your photo on counting crows I did how about you I also did and 69% of the audience agreed with us yes they like I said this was the widest margin of win.
[00:11:17] Okay 69% of the votes going to Mr. Jones 31% of the votes going to Tom Petty Mary Jane's list and I've said it before though that is still a great song like that is I actually was I did something I never do Chris I was at a bar on St. Patrick's day this year
[00:11:37] and at one point I was mostly acoustic guitar players except for one band but all of the acoustic guitar players for the last song of the night went on stage with like there are harmonicas and acoustic guitars and loop pedals and did Mary Jane's list dance and like I have to say that is a good like that is a good way to do that song is just like the three vocal harmonies and like the different guys playing the leads in the red like it's not a good way to do that.
[00:12:06] It's just a good song it is a great great song. Yeah I think it's a good song to I don't think it's better than Mr. Jones I don't even think it's in Tom Petty's top eight songs.
[00:12:18] I would say it's top 10 not top five for me yeah I would go make it might be his ninth or tenth past song yeah all right and then the match up of I'd hate to be this guy but the match up of who cares.
[00:12:31] Is lives I alone versus a base of the sign.
[00:12:39] You know I put my vote on the sign I'm not a huge fan of either song but I definitely like the pop sensibility of the sign way more I've never been a fan of live.
[00:12:51] But I don't know which way our audience would go though because I would tend to think that our audience leans rock and would have that sort of nostalgia for 90s rock but the sign is a sort of 90s pop song that seems to appeal to a lot of people.
[00:13:10] I voted for the sign I'm going to assume that you probably voted for the sign.
[00:13:14] Listen man I had to vote for live I had to stand by the fact that I draft it throwing copper in 94 draft I wasn't proud of it I voted against them when they were against the nigma but when a nigma lost I stopped caring I went full nihilist
[00:13:30] but it's okay because people didn't vote like me it was 56% to ace of base the sign still weirdly close there was yeah in the first half of this draft.
[00:13:42] It was going to live live had like 60% of the vote in the beginning and then the ace of base fans rolled in towards the later half of the week to give them that edge.
[00:13:54] Now whereas which way basket case versus sabotage should go is like up in the air and if green day wins I'll be really excited but if sabotage ends I'll be like that's kind of a cool upset like I like that twist.
[00:14:11] Then we have Mr. Jones counting grows versus the sign ace of base and like I want to see another like 69% counting grows just like decimation here.
[00:14:22] Matt I don't know you know I set the odds on our page last week and I don't know if you understand gambling odds I can explain them to you really quickly.
[00:14:32] I feel like it's whatever is the most guaranteed win is more of a negative you want to go for the surprises basically yeah basically everything is based off of of a $100 bet so if something is minus 300 which is what I set green day to win it all at last you.
[00:14:51] Last week you have to bet 300 dollars to win a hundred dollars because there's such a heavy favorite that you have to put up more money than you'd win.
[00:15:01] Whereas if something is plus so say something is plus 180 that means if you bet 100 dollars you would win 180 dollars you would win more than you bet that's what it means so right now I have to renegotiate in my head what the odds are and now by the way
[00:15:20] some of these results turned out I'm going to say that right now the favorite is still green day basket case but they are no longer minus 300 green day basket case is now minus 160 they're still the favorite you'd have to put up one 60 to win a hundred on.
[00:15:36] So let me ask you this question has counting crows now gotten to a minus territory well no they are not minus but they would right now be the second favorite because I do believe they're going to end up in the finals so I would say counting crows right now are a plus 110 so they're they're pretty close to even even make a little bit more than what you bet on them yeah beastie boys right now I would put at plus 180.
[00:16:04] I was going to say 150 but we're in the same ballpark and then where is the sign now is sign like plus 500 or something that's yeah I was going to say plus 450 so let's go let's split the difference we'll say plus 475 on the sign if you think the sign can go all the way a hundred dollars would win you 475 or $10 would win you 4750 whatever if if we were a gambling site if we were
[00:16:32] if we were a draft case yeah if we if yeah if we were a fan dole of songs from 1994 these would be the odds so right now the odds on favorite is still green day but not as big of a favorite as they were last week well press real quick before we wrap this up I know I have something I have to promote do you have anything
[00:16:54] you need to promote this week on your end anything exciting happening with punchline or crystal makes that we need to talk about same same old stuff why what do you have to promote the same day that this

[00:17:47] and standard on Friday so oh man I do have something to promote Friday March 22nd band I play in called another cheetah released a new song today but there you go see so watch my video listen to the song and then watch my video again and listen to the songs
