From 'Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro', to 'Lagaan', these Hindi films should make a comeback in theatres. In this episode of 'Do I Like It', Prateek Lidhoo talks about a full proof way to get people in theatres.
For some time, multiplex chain PVR has been re-releasing director retrospectives and older hit films, which is a great thing for film buffs. And it makes financial sense too.
Let us know in the comment what films you want to see re-released.

[00:00:00] Hello and welcome to Do I Like It, A Show J'Haham, Harbath Pabakkar. And in this episode I want to talk about some of my favorite films that deserve re-release at the theaters And by this trend of re-release in films is a step in the right direction.
[00:00:13] So I've seen this, that some of you may not know any of the time, but Han Jawan, type blockbuster, or theater, are going to be a bit more expensive. So PVR has started re-releasing some cult films to fill this content cap.
[00:00:23] I noticed this pattern first when they did a retrospective of Vidu Vinod Chopra's films in the run-up to 12th fail And up say they've re-release, zo actors, film, rashitur, goar, kar, forharn actor, a club storey, skithing, t-shar, khan etc.
[00:00:35] And I think that's an amazing thing for a film watching culture, and it makes financial sense too. They go. One of the biggest issues plaguing Hindi cinema right now is the lack of people who watch films in the theaters.
[00:00:46] Now, as I'm not sure if you're watching this movie, but they like it if it's just another made one time watch film. I'm not sure if I'm watching a movie, but I'm not sure if I'm watching a movie or a popcorn, or a passive.
[00:00:57] Now, it's a short term business loss to Hoira, but a long term loss of culture is being done. Just like any other thing, watching films in a theater is a skill and a habit.
[00:01:07] There are some aspects of theater watching that just don't compare even on the best TV or home viewing systems. There's much more intentionality to the thing that you're watching.
[00:01:16] When you're at home, you have the power to pause the film switch to something else or watch reels on Instagram. I'll film this thing. Please don't do that. But in a theater, you're there for a purpose. It's more active.
[00:01:27] Phone silent, pouté and deerao te hai, there are no pauses. You're almost forced to sit in one place and consume the whole film in its entirety. But here, in our own theatre, we're having a habit of being a little bit too much.
[00:01:39] And I'm not saying OTT is some villain or something. A large chunk of this problem was created by theatres only with their expensive pricing and the general quality of film being produced. The net net by logo co-theters may have to be a vapa slaht now.
[00:01:52] You've got to make people use to watching films in a theater once again. In a year like 2023, we actually saw some progress with films like Javan and Animal, but in general, they need to be a more sustainable model of getting Bums on seat.
[00:02:05] As an acre, this is the best way to get a theatre. And this is where we're releasing help. Now, we've got a theatre in the top of the theatre and the hall was around 30-40% full.
[00:02:17] And that's more than what I've seen for newer releases like Madhán, Siree Khan and Bancboys. I just watched some films and some die-hard fans of these films, got their siblings and partners to watch the film for the first time.
[00:02:29] So, hi, this is the rock star sold one-lact tickets. Now, this trend might end up in a few positive outcomes. Firstly, it can give us second-leas of life to films which tanked at first but have received the cult status over time. Now, it's the salt-eilage.
[00:02:44] Films like Akho de Ki, happy ending, ugly, masan. These are films that didn't work when they released, but today I'm going to release it. I'm sure there would be a sizable chunk of people who want to watch these films on a big screen.
[00:02:56] And who knows one of these films might just blow up, but try it on a big wall. This could slightly reduce the pressure of a weekend collection on a small mid-budget film. Now, in the past, a small small, simple, medium budget scripted film.
[00:03:10] And there's just had a huge hit like Javan. So they might not have an issue spending 5 to 10 crores on a small budget film. If they are convinced that the high-pitched film will be released, but it will be released.
[00:03:21] Let's say it will be released in the 12th of April. Both films have been released in the 80s and 80s. Such a staggered release can really help these middle-of-the-road films to breed. And even for theaters, it would make total financial sense.
[00:03:36] In the past, I saw a 5-film in the 5th of April and I was a 4-film man. I was the only person in the hall. Like, as a special private screening area. Now, I'm going to film a new film. For example, I'm a film director.
[00:03:50] And this film is a month-long film. Now, if the film fails to show promise, you can very well reduce the shows from 6-3. And if you're a single single, you'll see a film that is made in the same medium to 3-3 shows.
[00:04:04] And if you're a single, you'll see a film that is made in the same medium to 3-3 shows. Like, a legend of a singer, a British singer and a singer. Fans of the actor would have a range of films to choose from.
[00:04:11] And if there's a fan set, which is a person who's a singer, but sports will be a good option. The favourite actor who's a brand-new film, like I know so many people who re-bodge the DJ and Dilta Pagal, just because they're fans of Sharuk Khan and Madrid.
[00:04:25] And for the actors too, this would organically keep them in the conversation for longer. If there was a bandage, they'd say, instead of a story, then the story would be a sharuk Khan or an iconic fan base.
[00:04:36] Not to say that he needs one person to put a story to solidify a fan base, but you get what I'm saying. As the viral audience is here, I've made a video about it, and it's a great release.
[00:04:46] Now, the theories that I talked about in the film, they were in my mind for a long time, but just because I happened to watch the film again, I made sure to talk about it, hence continuing the buzz about the film.
[00:04:56] So even from a ruthless business sense, it looks good. The public is not a fan, or of course, either a brother, a guy, a marathon, the same day with the bang, wanted to take a name, a partner, and a partner, to release it.
[00:05:38] No one knows who knows who knows better than him. And a big multiple exchange, pVR, Singapore, and Svagarei, will start to start to start, so the single screen and smaller theaters would follow. And of course, re-releasing films is the best thing for film fans.
[00:05:54] Now I'll tell you how. Amir Khan's lagoon is one of my favorite films of all time. I think I've said somewhere on this channel only, that lagoon has the most tight and complete screenplay ever written in the movie. But when the film released, I was four years old.
[00:06:09] But when it was playing at mommy, without an interval, I traveled to Bombay towards the film on a big screen. My dad just liked any normal dad as a fan of the children films. Now imagine if he'd show up on his birthday,
[00:06:20] or even get a new life, so it would be a no brainer of a gift to give him, right? So in any film festival, there are a lot of new releases. They always have a retrospective of legendary directors and restored classics.
[00:06:31] I recently watched Govin Nailani's Aghaath with the theatre of Old and Young, Senifile Thinking, that this kid has to be a man. So I don't like this idea that in India, there are many audience. You just need to rebrand the activity of going into the theaters.
[00:06:46] So in India, there is this concept of going to the movies. I mean, in 4-4-4-4 days, we'll get the theatre and then decide what to do. But our going to the theater is a pre-planned, schedule, activity, limited to a particular film.
[00:07:02] That's why this is a film. I like to watch it. This is a film that I like to watch. I don't like to watch it. I'm going to go to the cinema. I'm going to film a film with the theatre.
[00:07:13] I'm going to film a film with the theatre. I'm going to film a film with the theatre. I'm going to film a film with the theatre. I'm going to stand up comedy or live concert or something. Now, obviously, I'm making it sound much easier than it actually is.
[00:07:24] I was like, I'm going to say, I'm going to be a film with the theatre and I'm going to be a film with the theatre. So if you know how the economics of releasing works, please let me know in the comments.
[00:07:33] I would like to know more about it. But here, as a fan of cinema, I think it's a great thing for the culture. I've had some of my best experiences watching a film in a dark room with people laughing, crying and getting scared together.
[00:07:46] And I wouldn't want that to become obsolete. And yes, these were my thoughts on some of my favourite films that should be re-released and this general wave of theatre is building a longer library of films. I'm very excited about it.
[00:07:58] I'm going to be a movie director and I love movies just to get a reading. But you know what? What classic films would you want to watch in the theatres? And if by chance you're a theatre owner or a Mr. PVR,
[00:08:10] that's what the owner of the theatre is called. If you want to see theatre, then please come to the next film.
