In this episode of Money Matters, I sit down with Neha (name changed), a 21-year-old from New Delhi who has taken the massive responsibility of clearing her family’s debt. Neha’s father underwent a critical kidney surgery during the pandemic, forcing the family into a cycle of loans. Between a ₹2,35,000 gold loan and over ₹2,60,000 borrowed from supportive relatives, Neha is trying to balance her fixed salary of ₹40,000 to keep the household running, pay for her own ongoing education, and clear these crushing liabilities.
My core advice to Neha, and anyone facing a family debt crisis at a young age, is to shift the mindset from "paying off the loan" to "aggressively scaling income." By restructuring her timeline with relatives, contributing directly toward the gold loan's principal, and turning her laptop EMI into a mutual fund SIP by November, Neha can unlock true financial freedom.
