00:00:49

Saikat Pyne: Please join me in welcoming Raghav, the founder and CEO

00:00:53

Saikat Pyne: of Ani Maker, one of the world's fastest growing SAS

00:00:56

Saikat Pyne: companies in the visual content creation space Anni maker has

00:01:01

Saikat Pyne: helped tens of millions of users around the world create

00:01:04

Saikat Pyne: visual content such as video presentations, explainer videos, infographics, et cetera,

00:01:11

Saikat Pyne: with easy T i Y tools. Welcome to the show, Raghav.

00:01:16

RS Raghavan: Oh, thank you. I'm pretty excited. What

00:01:19

Saikat Pyne: any maker brought to the table in terms of visual

00:01:24

Saikat Pyne: content or just content Creation was a fundamentally different proposition.

00:01:30

Saikat Pyne: As an entrepreneur, how did you conceive the idea of

00:01:33

Saikat Pyne: Andy Maker? Because it was pulse apart from anything that

00:01:36

Saikat Pyne: was out there. At that point,

00:01:41

RS Raghavan: I'd say it was more accidental self realisation and definitely

00:01:46

RS Raghavan: a personal frustration but a personal frustration as well.

00:01:49

RS Raghavan: When I was young, I want to become a scientist.

00:01:52

RS Raghavan: I used to do a lot of visual presentation videos

00:01:56

RS Raghavan: for my project.

00:01:57

RS Raghavan: People started appreciating my designs and videos more than my

00:02:00

RS Raghavan: project that they weren't exactly understood. I was actually good

00:02:04

RS Raghavan: at presentation videos.

00:02:06

RS Raghavan: I'm not smart enough to be in science, so I

00:02:10

RS Raghavan: think that self realisation is definitely leads me into video

00:02:14

RS Raghavan: production helping our companies in these worlds. I started my

00:02:17

RS Raghavan: own video production house with my CO-FOUNDER. Logan, and I'm

00:02:21

RS Raghavan: a tech guy. On the other hand, it was frustrating, right?

00:02:25

RS Raghavan: You need to train and learn and work with professional tools,

00:02:29

RS Raghavan: even years of training. You'll end up not knowing about

00:02:32

RS Raghavan: the button is and things like that.

00:02:34

RS Raghavan: So, especially if you wanna create designs and animation.

00:02:37

RS Raghavan: So the idea was born out of observ frustration. Why

00:02:41

RS Raghavan: not use a symbol to like Power Point Power Point

00:02:44

RS Raghavan: was so inspiration for me to help high quality animation

00:02:47

RS Raghavan: and videos. I can't be create the the Power Point.

00:02:50

RS Raghavan: Video creation and animation was the fundamental idea behind getting

00:02:55

RS Raghavan: into it.

00:02:56

Saikat Pyne: How Did you really see this product evolve? Because I'm

00:03:00

Saikat Pyne: sure what you perceived any maker to be on day

00:03:04

Saikat Pyne: one when you created the M V P and what

00:03:06

Saikat Pyne: it's become today is a lot different. So did you

00:03:10

Saikat Pyne: perceive it to evolve in

00:03:12

Saikat Pyne: the way that it has? Or did you just simply

00:03:15

Saikat Pyne: create iterations as you mentioned? That's that's

00:03:17

RS Raghavan: again, a very good question, to be precise. The vision

00:03:20

RS Raghavan: was quite common from day one until now, I think,

00:03:23

RS Raghavan: helping individuals and small to medium scale companies. Now we

00:03:26

RS Raghavan: are helping for companies to create videos the easiest way possible.

00:03:31

RS Raghavan: So if you really see the last project what we did.

00:03:34

RS Raghavan: So for example, steve dot a I where you can

00:03:37

RS Raghavan: just feed text and create animation videos. Seven years before

00:03:40

RS Raghavan: it was,

00:03:41

RS Raghavan: I mean, it was not there. No, it was. We

00:03:43

RS Raghavan: have two patterns around that topic and things like that, Yeah,

00:03:46

RS Raghavan: the one liner was there, but we want to really

00:03:48

RS Raghavan: democratise the idea of video creation. But the way we're

00:03:52

RS Raghavan: gonna do all of that is just an exploration just

00:03:55

RS Raghavan: like science experiments. We did a lot of things to

00:03:58

RS Raghavan: really be there, but the one line idea is always

00:04:01

RS Raghavan: stay the same.

00:04:02

Saikat Pyne: How did you want to position this tool back in

00:04:05

Saikat Pyne: the days? And how did you go about marketing the

00:04:07

Saikat Pyne: tool in the initial days of launch?

00:04:09

RS Raghavan: One good thing we did, I think, which is stay

00:04:12

RS Raghavan: that way for quite long. Even now is a premium model.

00:04:15

RS Raghavan: We tried to create value. First, we try to give

00:04:19

RS Raghavan: a lot of free trials premium.

00:04:21

RS Raghavan: I think, literally you can create the whole video with

00:04:25

RS Raghavan: a free tool that that is definitely put us in

00:04:28

RS Raghavan: a huge advantage because just like exactly students and first

00:04:31

RS Raghavan: time creators, they use the tool and get the benefit

00:04:35

RS Raghavan: first before even thinking of whether it's the right tool

00:04:38

RS Raghavan: for them. Whether we need to pay for this tool

00:04:41

RS Raghavan: or not, I think they see a huge hull of

00:04:44

RS Raghavan: value first.

00:04:45

RS Raghavan: I think the premium model helped a lot and especially,

00:04:48

RS Raghavan: people know, brag about good tools, right, especially if you

00:04:52

RS Raghavan: work with social media, people or even students. They Oh,

00:04:56

RS Raghavan: I found this great tool out there, so that really

00:04:59

RS Raghavan: helped during the initial days, creating a

00:05:01

RS Raghavan: huge value, and that could be a big driver for

00:05:04

RS Raghavan: us to be successful

00:05:05

Saikat Pyne: if you've been in the media industry longer than most

00:05:10

Saikat Pyne: of the people that I've known. Because media SAS, at

00:05:14

Saikat Pyne: least in India, is a relatively new industry,

00:05:18

Saikat Pyne: right, because the presumption in emerging economies was, why do

00:05:22

Saikat Pyne: we pay for software paying for software? So to say,

00:05:25

Saikat Pyne: CO and Co. Is a very new phenomenon in emerging countries.

00:05:28

Saikat Pyne: So while software was there, but Media SA in its

00:05:32

Saikat Pyne: after that we see right now was probably not around

00:05:35

Saikat Pyne: for too long. When you look at the media industry today,

00:05:39

Saikat Pyne: what are some of the bigger opportunities for new product

00:05:43

Saikat Pyne: and new category creation? A lot of

00:05:46

RS Raghavan: opportunities for sure.

00:05:47

RS Raghavan: Instead of just telling what products we should consider, I

00:05:50

RS Raghavan: tell you a lot of challenges and problems which are

00:05:52

RS Raghavan: available in the media market decade before. If you see,

00:05:56

RS Raghavan: we have this huge media company. But in 2022 every

00:05:59

RS Raghavan: company is a media company. This is a new opportunity

00:06:01

RS Raghavan: for a lot of startups, right, and that thing is

00:06:04

RS Raghavan: exactly happening right now. Now every company want to have

00:06:07

RS Raghavan: their own channels, want to create their own content,

00:06:10

RS Raghavan: and we have to think of, like, how can we

00:06:12

RS Raghavan: really help these folks say one example? Obviously any maker

00:06:16

RS Raghavan: and our suite of tools helping people to create content.

00:06:19

RS Raghavan: But there is a lot of opportunity in talent, SC

00:06:22

RS Raghavan: scouting or curation of content or the distribution set of

00:06:27

RS Raghavan: content and also on the other end this extreme. Now

00:06:30

RS Raghavan: there are something called vertical right. If you have these

00:06:33

RS Raghavan: huge video production houses like Disney, Sony

00:06:36

RS Raghavan: with big budgets, big time problems yeah, they do have

00:06:40

RS Raghavan: big budgets. But the challenge in the SARS is we

00:06:43

RS Raghavan: need to really understand their pain points in detail. And

00:06:46

RS Raghavan: if you create any vertical opportunities like oh, OK, building

00:06:50

RS Raghavan: payroll only for media.

00:06:53

RS Raghavan: Just like we have started seeing this vertical size really

00:06:55

RS Raghavan: taking over the market, I think the media is definitely

00:06:58

RS Raghavan: in need of because the building is very different in media.

00:07:01

RS Raghavan: Payroll is yeah, they are trying to adopt the general

00:07:04

RS Raghavan: payroll tool. They're trying to adopt the general supply chain software.

00:07:08

RS Raghavan: But if you really get it to the media side

00:07:10

RS Raghavan: of it, or if you really get to the Hollywood

00:07:12

RS Raghavan: side of it, you really know there are a lot

00:07:14

RS Raghavan: of room for vertical.

00:07:16

Saikat Pyne: The challenge that I've seen with founders in the media

00:07:20

Saikat Pyne: is that some of them are creatives, right? They are

00:07:23

Saikat Pyne: non techies,

00:07:25

Saikat Pyne: and they have incredible domain expertise in their respective creative fields.

00:07:30

Saikat Pyne: But in the absence of a technical co-founder, they often

00:07:33

Saikat Pyne: struggle to launch a a company. What is your advice

00:07:37

Saikat Pyne: to them? It

00:07:38

RS Raghavan: will be super difficult when you start, especially if you

00:07:41

RS Raghavan: are getting into a or any tech based business difficult

00:07:45

RS Raghavan: when you start. But over time, for especially all these

00:07:48

RS Raghavan: creative people, over time, the field will become quite flat.

00:07:52

RS Raghavan: People who understand the market who understand the product will

00:07:55

RS Raghavan: have a better leverage than those who are just good

00:07:58

RS Raghavan: and technical.

00:07:59

Saikat Pyne: Monetizing a media tool, especially if you're targeting niches, seems

00:08:05

Saikat Pyne: to be a challenge. What is a good way to

00:08:08

Saikat Pyne: scale your marketing efforts from Day one? If you're planning

00:08:11

Saikat Pyne: to launch a media tool,

00:08:14

RS Raghavan: OK, so for a media says by defaulted people, it

00:08:18

RS Raghavan: will catch the ball compared with people. You get the

00:08:21

RS Raghavan: conversation going, so use it to your advantage. So what

00:08:25

RS Raghavan: I mean is first, if you're a media says, I

00:08:27

RS Raghavan: think you need to act as a media company, your CEO,

00:08:31

RS Raghavan: your social media team. Your campaign should generate content. A

00:08:34

RS Raghavan: lot of very good content.

00:08:36

RS Raghavan: Yeah, you can be super bad. You'll be judged. But wait,

00:08:39

RS Raghavan: hold on. You'll start getting results. I have seen that

00:08:41

RS Raghavan: past few of my videos are highly good and slowly

00:08:45

RS Raghavan: I started seeing like the same thing. Our team got

00:08:48

RS Raghavan: improved and things fall in place. So creating a good

00:08:51

RS Raghavan: quality content on specific channels. But other than that,

00:08:55

RS Raghavan: the channels are the same. So if you are a

00:08:57

RS Raghavan: media sales or a general sales, you're gonna end up

00:08:59

RS Raghavan: creating stuff, YouTube or creating content for your landing pages.

00:09:03

RS Raghavan: Those channels are paid ads and these channels doesn't change.

00:09:07

RS Raghavan: But the one big change you can bring in which

00:09:10

RS Raghavan: I think not just media says any sales company is

00:09:12

RS Raghavan: missing is you can create a lot of quality content.

00:09:16

RS Raghavan: I think the quality comes from two things. One, if

00:09:18

RS Raghavan: you have a huge budget, you can.

00:09:20

RS Raghavan: But as a startup, we will not have right on

00:09:23

RS Raghavan: the other end. You have a lot of time when

00:09:25

RS Raghavan: I work with all these fortune foreign companies. They are

00:09:28

RS Raghavan: running out of time every month. They have a lot

00:09:31

RS Raghavan: of campaigns, but you can spend that to your advantage, right?

00:09:35

RS Raghavan: You can really come up with some really good content

00:09:38

RS Raghavan: every month or every week to really, you know, build

00:09:42

RS Raghavan: a community around it. Those are the things I think

00:09:45

RS Raghavan: right now is working really well for general sales or

00:09:48

RS Raghavan: media as well.

00:09:50

RS Raghavan: Community building content creation.

00:09:53

Saikat Pyne: If somebody is unsure about how to price the product

00:09:59

Saikat Pyne: to not lose initial traction, what are some of the

00:10:02

Saikat Pyne: things that they can go about?

00:10:05

RS Raghavan: Very good. Question one. You need to start thinking of

00:10:07

RS Raghavan: modernization from day one, right? Some of our tool, especially

00:10:11

RS Raghavan: in media, says we think of uh Oh, let's push

00:10:14

RS Raghavan: this as a free tool. I said carefully. Premium not free,

00:10:19

RS Raghavan: because you which means that the moment you attach freemium

00:10:22

RS Raghavan: the word premium, which means that you only need to

00:10:24

RS Raghavan: figure out your monetization model from day one. You can

00:10:27

RS Raghavan: change the monetization model later. But, uh, now getting revenue,

00:10:31

RS Raghavan: getting your numbers right should be in your plan from

00:10:34

RS Raghavan: day one, I think. And the second problem I see

00:10:37

RS Raghavan: in media is we're trying to imitate or be like, uh,

00:10:42

RS Raghavan: other SAS companies. Sometimes we are not because they

00:10:45

RS Raghavan: hugely consumer centric product, especially products like ours, which means

00:10:49

RS Raghavan: that the modernization angles are very different. But the challenge

00:10:52

RS Raghavan: is both founders and I spoke to a lot of these.

00:10:55

RS Raghavan: They try to fit this media size into a typical, uh,

00:10:59

RS Raghavan: support tool, or because this all comes out of. So

00:11:02

RS Raghavan: if you are a bit more creative Oh, OK, why

00:11:05

RS Raghavan: can't I put ads and make money? So, for example,

00:11:07

RS Raghavan: line app in right, They just sold stickers.

00:11:12

RS Raghavan: Yeah, more than a billion yen, which is $1.4 million

00:11:15

RS Raghavan: in just three months.

00:11:17

RS Raghavan: It is. It's just a one time purchase. It doesn't

00:11:20

RS Raghavan: come under the category of subscription revenue, but still, it's

00:11:23

RS Raghavan: a huge money, Right? So, like this genius, Yeah, you

00:11:26

RS Raghavan: have to be a bit more creative instead of just

00:11:29

RS Raghavan: staying with the same playbook of I think if you

00:11:33

RS Raghavan: be a bit more creative in monetization,

00:11:35

RS Raghavan: like running ads or sponsoring content, just any consumer products

00:11:39

RS Raghavan: or products, it could be an ad. You can always

00:11:42

RS Raghavan: have a subscription revenue. I'm saying these are the other

00:11:44

RS Raghavan: avenues which you should explore with the free users.

00:11:47

Saikat Pyne: Could you tell me, Let's say a couple of mistakes

00:11:51

Saikat Pyne: that you made

00:11:52

Saikat Pyne: while we are on the topic that you would want

00:11:55

Saikat Pyne: budding media as founders to steer clear of. Because I

00:11:58

Saikat Pyne: think that hit a very raw now there with pricing.

00:12:01

Saikat Pyne: But I'm sure there's more to it, right, But I

00:12:03

Saikat Pyne: can

00:12:03

RS Raghavan: think of 23 mistakes. Lack of knowledge is one big

00:12:07

RS Raghavan: problem in this industry.

00:12:09

RS Raghavan: Yeah, you watch a movie, which doesn't mean that you

00:12:11

RS Raghavan: are qualified to create a movie, right? And one more

00:12:14

RS Raghavan: broader observation is SARS in general 10 years before before

00:12:19

RS Raghavan: is very different because most of the success story what

00:12:21

RS Raghavan: we are seeing is 10 years before is very different

00:12:24

RS Raghavan: from now. Imitation could be a killer. Um earlier SARS

00:12:28

RS Raghavan: companies do have a price difference. But nowadays even sales

00:12:31

RS Raghavan: force comes with low tag price

00:12:34

RS Raghavan: for sales company, which means that those opportunities are gone

00:12:38

RS Raghavan: for India Company India says any Asian companies, so that

00:12:42

RS Raghavan: opportunity is gone. I mean, that worked 10 years before

00:12:45

RS Raghavan: or not now, which means that you have to really

00:12:47

RS Raghavan: come up with the idea.

00:12:48

RS Raghavan: 10 better product or a different idea, then I think

00:12:52

RS Raghavan: you'll be successful right now. I think even a simple

00:12:55

RS Raghavan: feature imitation could be a killer. The only price difference

00:12:58

RS Raghavan: could be a killer is a big problem. And you

00:13:01

RS Raghavan: don't need to win Olympic gold medal right now. No,

00:13:04

RS Raghavan: Sometimes it's more like a science experiment are going and

00:13:08

RS Raghavan: and explore the trial. I would say, you know, to

00:13:11

RS Raghavan: change your goals and destination more, to be successful.

00:13:14

RS Raghavan: That's what I learned personally.

00:13:15

Saikat Pyne: Circling back to Anni Maker. What's the future like for

00:13:19

Saikat Pyne: a maker?

00:13:20

RS Raghavan: One is definitely. We were slowly getting into this whole

00:13:24

RS Raghavan: visual creation tool. We started supporting graphic design we started supporting.

00:13:29

RS Raghavan: If you want to create a product videos, demo videos,

00:13:32

RS Raghavan: those are the areas. We are slowly helping our people

00:13:35

RS Raghavan: in different side, but slowly. Yeah, it's pretty, pretty exciting

00:13:38

RS Raghavan: Time and we started using a lot, probably this project

00:13:41

RS Raghavan: called steve dot a A. Which is really doing well.

00:13:44

RS Raghavan: People just just feed text and generate videos. A couple

00:13:47

RS Raghavan: of years before, it was not like a dream. We

00:13:49

RS Raghavan: really want to make it a product which is even

00:13:51

RS Raghavan: more easier than any maker that's

00:13:54

Saikat Pyne: great to hear. It was lovely having you on the podcast.

00:14:00
