[00:00:00] Welcome back to the Edges amp, Sledges Cricket Podcast. This is DJ and I'll be your host for this week.

[00:00:16] And we have a very, very special guest on the show.

[00:00:20] A first, this episode is brought to you by Surf Exelmatic Liquid and we have Parshavi Chopra with us on the show.

[00:00:29] Parshavi is an India under 19 World Cup winner. She's a UP Warriors player and I believe this is her first ever podcast appearance.

[00:00:38] So Parshavi, welcome to Edges and Sledges. We are delighted you've chosen us to make your podcasting debut.

[00:00:44] Thank you. Thank you so much sir.

[00:00:46] Parshavi, it is an absolute pleasure to have you on the show and of course you are currently involved in the WPL, URA, UP Warriors player.

[00:00:56] But I want to start talking about your early days as a cricketer. So we've had other cricketers that have come and told us about their early days as a cricketer.

[00:01:04] You've had a very interesting journey as a cricketer. You've had a very interesting journey as a cricketer.

[00:01:07] You've started skating since the beginning. So tell us how did you start playing cricket and tell us about your link with Yuvraj Singh.

[00:01:16] Who's also a skater? I believe in his early days before becoming an India cricketer himself.

[00:01:21] Sir, I've skated before the cricketer. I've started skating a lot. I started sports a lot.

[00:01:29] I've skated a lot. So when I started playing cricket for 10 years, I started playing cricket for the first time because my family likes cricket a lot.

[00:01:40] I mean my family is like a celibate cricket as a festival. So my grandfather also plays cricket with university students.

[00:01:49] So I mean my family is like a dream. I mean I'll play cricket and then I'll represent India. So that's why I started cricket.

[00:01:58] Amazing. So we've heard that you used to play cricket with a lot of girls. You didn't even know that a girl's team is a team.

[00:02:05] So how did you get involved with the women's cricket team? What was the involvement in your school?

[00:02:14] I started to know that the boys' team was a cricket. I didn't even know that women's team was a team.

[00:02:21] So my coach Vishal Bhattya, he said that they would give me a track of cricket.

[00:02:26] Then I had a 12th at the age of 12. I had a first trial. Then my first round was not selected. I had a first trial.

[00:02:35] So when I had a second trial, then I thought that there was a competition. Because I had a first trial.

[00:02:41] I mean I saw the first round of women's team. So I didn't even know that I had a second trial.

[00:02:47] I thought that boys would be very tough. And as I had a second trial, I had a second trial.

[00:02:54] I had a second trial and I had a second trial. I had a second trial.

[00:03:00] I had a second trial. I had a second trial.

[00:03:03] Wow. So already you've started telling us about the obstacles of being a woman cricketer in India.

[00:03:09] Now, what are the challenges do you face as a young woman cricketer in India?

[00:03:14] Maybe you can talk to us about how does society perceive a young woman cricketer growing up and wanting to play cricket

[00:03:22] whereas for a long time, even the question of having a WPL was debated and that WPL has only come two years ago.

[00:03:30] Sir, I think that women's cricketer has been developed a lot.

[00:03:34] Because every family supports women's cricketer very much.

[00:03:37] First, it wasn't like that. The financial condition was low.

[00:03:41] But now the cricket has promoted a lot of women's cricketer.

[00:03:44] Because the world cups are starting. And the United gave a world cup.

[00:03:48] And then the world cups are starting. And now the WPL is very much formatted.

[00:03:52] That means, to promote women's cricketer.

[00:03:55] The WPL will become a matchup so that the chances of being able to represent India will be gone.

[00:04:00] So we are talking about India representation, Parishwarya.

[00:04:03] So my question is about India's journey.

[00:04:07] You've played for India under 19.

[00:04:12] You won a World Cup under Shifali Verma.

[00:04:15] We all remember the emotional moments where Shifali was giving that interview at the end.

[00:04:20] Tell us what it felt like playing that World Cup.

[00:04:24] Of course, your performances were incredible.

[00:04:26] You picked up four for five against Sri Lanka and the quarterfinals, three for 20 against New Zealand in the semifinal and two for 13 against England in the finals itself.

[00:04:36] But tell us what it felt like putting on that jersey for the very first time and what it means to be an India under 19 World Cup winner to you.

[00:04:46] Sir, when someone is playing sports or someone is playing cricket,

[00:04:50] or someone is playing sports, everyone is wondering that they are representing their country.

[00:04:56] So my cricketer also means that I represent India.

[00:05:00] And that moment is very different when you spend India's independence in the year and when you get the chance to participate in India.

[00:05:09] For which you spend your time and that moment is different.

[00:05:13] And when I felt the most comfortable moment, when I went to the field for the first time in the world,

[00:05:18] the first time I was in the national anthem of your dress.

[00:05:21] So that was the best moment of your life.

[00:05:25] You were very emotional when you heard the national anthem and your crowd was also playing with you.

[00:05:31] Yes, absolutely.

[00:05:32] I didn't think that it would be our south of the world.

[00:05:34] So India was less and less.

[00:05:36] So...

[00:05:37] India is much more in every country.

[00:05:39] We go there and then when we grow up in the national anthem,

[00:05:43] we don't listen to anything else.

[00:05:45] When we go there, we go there.

[00:05:47] Superb! I mean of course that is an incredible achievement at a very young age.

[00:05:51] It's a long career ahead of you.

[00:05:53] But in all our lives, we have setbacks.

[00:05:57] And in those moments, it feels like we're down, we feel stuck, we feel soiled.

[00:06:03] We can't move past it.

[00:06:06] It becomes a dry rain.

[00:06:09] It feels like a tough dry stain that you can't get out.

[00:06:11] No matter what you do, it's irritating you.

[00:06:13] It's in the back of your mind.

[00:06:15] How to take it out?

[00:06:18] Have you got a Sukha Dug story?

[00:06:20] Have you got some story where you find an obstacle?

[00:06:24] And what did you do to remove that tough dried stain?

[00:06:28] And how did you overcome that obstacle, really?

[00:06:31] I'm very interested to know because you would face many of them.

[00:06:35] But was there something that lasted longer than others?

[00:06:38] And then how did you get rid of it?

[00:06:40] The question of the player's life is how does he face?

[00:06:43] That the person who wants to be the one who doesn't have it.

[00:06:46] I think that's the way I was.

[00:06:49] The person who wanted to be the one who was going negative.

[00:06:52] I think it's positive.

[00:06:54] I think it's positive.

[00:06:56] So my family, the coaches, they supported me a lot.

[00:07:00] I don't think that's the right way.

[00:07:04] Now, cricket is played.

[00:07:06] All the challenges come in your life.

[00:07:09] So you should be positive.

[00:07:11] I've seen my first performance.

[00:07:14] I mean, I was a little positive.

[00:07:17] I was a bit positive.

[00:07:19] So I mean, my family supported me a lot.

[00:07:22] I had to come back in the name.

[00:07:25] And you weren't selected for the first time in 12 years?

[00:07:29] But at 13, you were a whole year old.

[00:07:32] So how did you feel during that one full year?

[00:07:38] Did it feel like you would be able to overcome that challenge?

[00:07:43] Would you get rid of that dark?

[00:07:46] Because a year's dry dark is a long time.

[00:07:49] So when you got rid of it also, how did you feel?

[00:07:52] Sir, when I was a first-class.

[00:07:55] I mean, in 12 years, I wasn't selected.

[00:07:59] Because everyone thinks it's a very small thing.

[00:08:02] Because when I was in the industry, I thought it's a very small thing.

[00:08:06] Then I thought that I should do a good job

[00:08:10] so that I can never feel anything.

[00:08:13] So then when I thought about it,

[00:08:16] I should give my 100% selection to the next year.

[00:08:19] So that I can play in my selection and I am a state.

[00:08:23] So that was very hard for me.

[00:08:27] I didn't know much about knowledge or anything.

[00:08:31] So when I knew that I had to play on my friends.

[00:08:36] So I was very excited.

[00:08:39] So I was very excited.

[00:08:41] That's very interesting because of course just like self-excealmatic liquid removes stuff dried stains,

[00:08:45] you managed by the sounds a bit to move past those obstacles

[00:08:49] and you are now looking forward to new challenges.

[00:08:52] And we obviously wishing you all the very best with those challenges.

[00:08:56] Now obviously our listeners as well are very interested and lots of them play cricket.

[00:09:00] So guys, we have a dark while moment contest.

[00:09:04] So the contest is basically you guys who are all playing cricket,

[00:09:08] diving around, taking catches, diving into your crease.

[00:09:12] I mean we see Instagram Reels of people playing cricket in mud and playing cricket in rivers and all of that.

[00:09:19] So what we want you to do is to send us your pictures

[00:09:24] where you're wearing those stained jerseys with those Sukhadag

[00:09:28] with the hashtag Sukhadag out and tag surf Excel India on Instagram and tag one tip one hand.

[00:09:36] And at the end of that contest, which will announce the winner off on the 15th of April episode during the IPL's tune in then.

[00:09:43] So it's going to run for about a month.

[00:09:45] You will have a chance.

[00:09:47] The lucky winner will have a chance to win.

[00:09:49] Surf excelmatic liquid and cricket equipment.

[00:09:53] So it's a pretty cool contest.

[00:09:55] Make sure you get your entry in. Don't forget, you need to send us a picture of you wearing those jerseys,

[00:10:01] clothes, whatever with those tough dried stains with the hashtag Sukhadag out,

[00:10:05] Tag Surf Excel India and tag us one tip one hand.

[00:10:10] On that note, we'll take a short break.

[00:10:13] We are in conversation with the Partsvi Chopra and we'll be back straight after this break

[00:10:18] to talk more about WPL and what part of he's been getting up to there.

[00:10:23] So we'll also be asking for some predictions because we're recording this on the day of the WPL finals.

[00:10:28] Don't go anywhere.

[00:10:29] Hey Dad!

[00:10:30] Good to see you, Chand.

[00:10:32] Any doubt?

[00:10:47] No doubt.

[00:10:48] In Sukhidag, this is the first time for me to surf excelmatic SPP technology.

[00:10:53] This is the first time I've ever seen Sukhidag.

[00:10:55] What happened?

[00:10:56] Any doubt?

[00:10:57] No, surf excelmatic.

[00:11:08] Welcome back from that break and you're still listening to the edges and sledges cricket podcast

[00:11:12] in the air and conversation with Partsvi Chopra, India under 19, World Cup winner

[00:11:17] and UP warriors leg spin-um.

[00:11:20] Partsvi, I want to talk to you about the WPL because for years we've been talking about

[00:11:25] having a women's league IPL has been running since 2008 but the WPL is only in its second season now.

[00:11:32] I mean there was some exhibition matches that were played a few years ago but now it is a full-fledged league.

[00:11:38] You've got five teams, Delhi capitals versus RCB today and in the final which I'm very excited

[00:11:43] as I'm a Delhi capitals fan.

[00:11:45] And of course we had Jimmy Rodriguez and Shikha both on this show earlier so very very excited

[00:11:51] hoping that the girls can get the Delhi franchise.

[00:11:53] It's very first trophy but tell us what it was like being part of the WPL auction and being picked?

[00:11:59] How, what was that feeling because of course it was the first ever auction.

[00:12:05] So how did you react were you following the auction on Crickin 4 or Crick Bus or TV

[00:12:12] or how did that go down where were you and what was the reaction of your family

[00:12:17] and friends and coaches and all of that.

[00:12:20] I was at my home only after under 19 World Cup.

[00:12:24] I was very excited about WPL because this was the first ever WPL auction

[00:12:30] and I had practice in my morning only and then I seen whole auction.

[00:12:37] So I was very excited when in the first round I got selected to the WPL, my home team.

[00:12:44] Your home team yes of course it is your home team and what is it like sharing a dressing room with

[00:12:51] kind of legends I guess of the women's game like Ali Sahili right?

[00:12:55] What is it like do you do end up because there's a pretty special bond between a leg spinner

[00:13:00] and their wicket keeper right like a wrist spinner and the wicket keeper if you look at Kool-Dee

[00:13:04] and MS Dhoni or all of that they've got these special bonds right.

[00:13:08] How much do you interact with the likes of Ali Sahili tell us a little bit about the dressing room by

[00:13:13] in in the UP Warriors.

[00:13:16] I think Ali is very supportive captain and very experienced where she is 34 and she's captain of

[00:13:24] she's captain of friendly Australia team.

[00:13:28] So I think she's very experienced player so she is very supportive also

[00:13:32] or me because she thinks and yeah yeah also she's supporting while bowling also.

[00:13:40] And your idol I think I read somewhere growing up for Shane Warn.

[00:13:44] Of course the great Shane Warn passed away a few years ago very very sad occurrence

[00:13:51] for all cricket fans all over the world because I mean we grew up watching him bowl to such

[00:13:55] and he would they were the only two players invited to Don Bradman's 90th birthday

[00:14:01] and I mean his larger than life.

[00:14:03] So did you model your action a little bit on Shane Warn when you started?

[00:14:06] Because you started like as a fast bowler and then you became a leg spinner.

[00:14:11] Yeah as a fast bowler I started playing cricket and then I have watched Shane Warn videos

[00:14:17] and then I thought that I would also love to take his bowling.

[00:14:23] So are we going to see a new ball come in?

[00:14:27] A flipper or something new?

[00:14:30] Yes yes sir.

[00:14:31] Because you developed the googly recently.

[00:14:33] Yeah.

[00:14:34] Is again what I read.

[00:14:35] Are you developing a flipper like the great Warn?

[00:14:38] Yes sir I'm learning variations.

[00:14:41] Okay very interesting but of course Shane Warn was not only known for his bowling.

[00:14:45] Partially and you seem like a very nice person but Shane was also known for his sledging.

[00:14:51] Some of the biggest sledges came from Shane and we are called edges and sledges.

[00:14:56] Now edges are good for leg spinners but tell us about a sledging story.

[00:15:00] Partially whether you were subject to the sledging or whether you were the one doing the sledging

[00:15:05] are you a big person that does sledging and tell tell us if you...

[00:15:09] No no.

[00:15:10] Is there no sledging in the women's game?

[00:15:12] I am very calm at the round.

[00:15:14] I don't sledging.

[00:15:15] But you must be knowing other people that sledge.

[00:15:18] Tell us a story of while you've been around maybe somebody sledged somebody and it's been funny.

[00:15:22] So I'll tell you state my story.

[00:15:25] Okay.

[00:15:26] I was batting and UP need overruns in many overs.

[00:15:31] I think 10 to 15 overs and we have lost two wickets so I went to batting and one builder was saying

[00:15:39] I think it's a nice thing to see the Nike shoes.

[00:15:42] I think they need me as well.

[00:15:44] So I was going to ignore them.

[00:15:47] Last one I said I had to defend the first ball and then I said to him.

[00:15:52] I knocked him out of the ball and he saw me there.

[00:15:55] I was not able to see him from the bottom.

[00:15:58] You didn't give any...

[00:16:01] You didn't give any...

[00:16:02] I think I gave him a bad chance.

[00:16:04] I think if someone slaps someone, he can come from a bad ball.

[00:16:08] Maybe that's an opportunity for Nike to sponsor that player.

[00:16:13] No, very cool.

[00:16:15] So tell us a little bit more about your goals in the next WPL.

[00:16:19] Of course you were part of the tricking for team of the first WPL.

[00:16:24] So tell us a little bit about what you want to achieve as the league grows bigger,

[00:16:30] as you get more experience.

[00:16:32] What is the contribution you want to bring to the UP Warriors team in next season?

[00:16:37] Of course they didn't make the deep play of this year,

[00:16:40] which you would be disappointed about no doubt.

[00:16:43] But what is the goal for next year?

[00:16:46] Whenever I get a chance, I can give 100% and I can help the team in the same way.

[00:16:54] And the other player says that if he plays better than the team,

[00:16:59] then I am an orange cap holder.

[00:17:02] I will be the same as the next season.

[00:17:05] If I ever get a chance, I will win the biggest game for the first time in the world.

[00:17:10] Very good.

[00:17:11] But also now we've only talked mainly about Whiteball.

[00:17:15] Because under 19 World Cup is Whiteball, WPL is Whiteball.

[00:17:19] What are your Redball aspirations, Pashavi?

[00:17:22] Because we've seen Indian women playing two test matches,

[00:17:25] beating the two strongest teams in the last 12 months England and Australia

[00:17:29] and beating them convincingly.

[00:17:32] What are your Redball aspirations?

[00:17:34] Do you prefer Redball or Whiteball cricket?

[00:17:36] What do you prefer?

[00:17:38] Whiteball cricket.

[00:17:39] You prefer Whiteball cricket, do you find it more exciting?

[00:17:42] Yes.

[00:17:43] Okay, interesting.

[00:17:45] So also, Redball cricket is probably a few opportunities to play right in India.

[00:17:50] I would imagine at the moment.

[00:17:52] Maybe that will develop over years.

[00:17:55] Yes, it will develop.

[00:17:57] Do you find your game suits, Whiteball cricket mode?

[00:17:59] Yes.

[00:18:00] Okay, interesting.

[00:18:02] Right and do you have any advice?

[00:18:05] I suppose for young cricketers that are coming up through the ranks,

[00:18:11] maybe women cricketers, maybe men cricketers, if you're young,

[00:18:15] of course you have a lot of things going through your mind, should you focus on studies?

[00:18:18] I heard you were very good at studies but you asked to focus on cricket.

[00:18:23] Who gave you that piece of advice?

[00:18:25] No, I was only one of them because I think...

[00:18:28] It's a little bit more than most families will say.

[00:18:30] You should study cricket and waste time in cricket.

[00:18:33] I used to think that two things are very tough for balance.

[00:18:40] I mean, you focus on one thing.

[00:18:42] After 8-9, I gave all my focus to cricket.

[00:18:48] I used to think that the end of the 19 World Cup is coming.

[00:18:51] I used to think that it was very practical for me to study and waste time.

[00:18:56] And then what is your advice on young cricketers?

[00:19:00] If someone is a big fan of the 16th century,

[00:19:04] then what is your piece of advice to them?

[00:19:06] How do you advise them to succeed in cricket?

[00:19:09] I will say that I don't mean that you have to play cricket.

[00:19:13] You have to play cricket in India.

[00:19:19] You have to keep playing in general to win.

[00:19:22] I said there is a summary of your practic and your life isn't something that you might not want to take.

[00:19:30] I say in other words, whether there is anything you would like to do in your life.

[00:19:37] The things that you need to do more than your heart are too little.

[00:19:44] You need to do more than 100 percent of the kids.

[00:19:47] very good and I think that's very sound advice, work hard and focus. I think is how I would summarize that.

[00:19:57] Awesome. Part of it. This has been a really, really nice chat. I think you've made a smashing podcasting

[00:20:02] debut and many thanks to SurfX Elmatic Liquid for making this happen. Part of it again, thank

[00:20:09] you so much for your time. Any final words, any, do you want to tell people where they can find you?

[00:20:15] Do you have social media? Do you look at social media? I don't know.

[00:20:17] Yes, sir. Okay, so where can people find you and follow you and when?

[00:20:21] On Instagram, sir.

[00:20:23] Okay, we'll put a link in the show notes, guys. And you can, you can go and follow Part

[00:20:26] of it there. But yeah, this is the Edge's and Slag's cricket podcast. It's been an absolute pleasure

[00:20:31] speaking to Part of each open. You can follow us because we do know where our Instagram

[00:20:36] and Facebook and Twitter handles us. So we're at one tip on hand. That's the number one tip,

[00:20:41] the number one hand. So come and say hi to us and of course, don't forget to enter the contest

[00:20:47] where you can win some cricket equipment. You can win a supply of SurfX Elmatic Liquid.

[00:20:52] All you need to do is send us a picture of you wearing a jersey with the dried stains with the
