IPL 2024 First Week Review: Hardik gets booed, Kohli scores big and Dhoni turns the clock back

[00:00:13] meet DJ who is in India and seeming to have watched a lot more of the games this week. DJ,

[00:00:20] how are you feeling? Are you finally in the IPL season? Because I always think it takes

[00:00:24] me a lot to get that IPL excitement out of you. No, I'm definitely in the IPL season. Of

[00:00:30] course, Delhi had just put their first win on the board. Hopefully it's not the only win of

[00:00:36] the season. MS Dhoni has played a cameo from 2005 with the long hairs. The IPL has come alive,

[00:00:45] man. Like, it's a great week for it. I'm really looking forward to the next week of it and

[00:00:49] chatting through what happened in the last week with you. Let's go. And just for the record,

[00:00:54] we're recording on Monday morning. So we've finished the entire week's matches. We'll start off

[00:00:59] from the Monday game and obviously the intention is not to run through the scorecard but there's a lot

[00:01:04] of social media chatter that's happened. There's a lot of great on-field performances. So we're just

[00:01:08] going to try and cover as much as we can because it is I think like five, seven, eight matches

[00:01:15] to get through. And we'll also cover why Baram takes credit for Hasaranga's injury.

[00:01:19] Yeah, dude. He's not playing tag. I got saved for anyone following. They'll know this is about.

[00:01:26] But let's get into it, right? So Monday last week was Punjab versus Bangalore.

[00:01:33] Typically a match which is not going to be a high profile game but both teams have never won. Both

[00:01:39] teams are searching for that playoff position. DJ for me, Punjab made 176. The real standout was

[00:01:47] Shiki D and he seems to be stroking the ball really well for somebody who hasn't played in a while

[00:01:52] but the story of the match was Virat Kohli. Faf seems to be getting like out very early and that's

[00:02:00] not something we're used to considering I keep trumping him in my fantasy team and I've not taken

[00:02:05] Kohli because all the chatter has got to me about him being a 120 strike rate person. So I'm

[00:02:10] like he's not going to give me points and then Kohli comes out and hits 77 of 49 balls in 11,

[00:02:16] 4, 2, 6s and they win the game in that last over but yeah DJ talked me I mean without going into

[00:02:23] too much detail on the match, talk me through that Kohli piece a little bit. Yeah, I mean I've been

[00:02:28] putting him as captain of all my games and I think he may be the orange cap holder right now or not.

[00:02:34] Maybe not. I don't know. He is right. So you've got to have faith in the king. He's a hundred

[00:02:39] k points to buy him for fantasy and man he's been delivering but what was actually interesting about

[00:02:46] this innings was I think he got dropped when he was on not he got dropped once again by Rahul

[00:02:52] Chahir at Midwikit and he didn't finish the job the job was actually finished by others

[00:03:00] but obviously the job contend for the RCB and they put their first points on the board but

[00:03:07] what was interesting was the press conference at the end when usually you don't stick around

[00:03:12] for that kind of thing but when you know when Kohli is going to be man of the match,

[00:03:15] you want to be around to see what happens because there's always a few fireworks and you see less

[00:03:20] of him now because he's not captain of RCB. He's not captain of India. So you hear him when he talks

[00:03:26] about his man of the match performance and Harsha gave him the orange cap and he's like I don't

[00:03:30] care about this it's only too much as a and I want to play stuff to help my team win and all of that.

[00:03:36] And then he made a very interesting comment about how his name is being used to sell the game in

[00:03:41] certain parts of the world and maybe he still got a P20 game and then I don't know you really

[00:03:48] enjoyed Harsha's response to that. I did so the I think I was checking with you just before we started

[00:03:53] I think BCCI or somebody put out this tweets about how Kohli should go to the T20 World Cup in

[00:04:00] USA because he's such a brand and his name. I mean the ICC will have him on all the poster exactly

[00:04:06] and there's no doubt about that right when we're not Kohli is there versus when he isn't there's

[00:04:09] a huge difference and so they were kind of insinuating that he's he should be there because his

[00:04:14] brand name can promote the game in the US and that was very clear and then he hits this 77 or 49 gets

[00:04:21] into the press conference like you said and basically has a direct attack on that piece I mean

[00:04:26] ends with saying I think I still got it right and at that point I thought this is something

[00:04:32] to Harsha and Harsha kind of reply saying I think you do I think you do I just left it there

[00:04:37] almost not knowing like first time you're seeing Harsha will be doesn't know what to reply or say

[00:04:42] but yeah look you can criticize him as much as you want there are always there's always room for

[00:04:49] improvement but when he hits that kind of a knock and they win the game I don't really think there's

[00:04:53] any debate right DJ and there is another game where he played a similar knock so we'll come to that

[00:04:57] debate as we go on but overall I think clearly Kohli stood out in that match as the top performer.

[00:05:04] Yeah and it was a tricky pitch I mean it wasn't bad below it wasn't the easiest bit to bat

[00:05:08] on everybody said it was a bit up and down his bit to paste uh so it wasn't the usual road that

[00:05:14] the Chinnaswami lays out to get 220 plays to whatever to 10 right so it was it was a little bit different

[00:05:21] it wasn't it wasn't the same as usual but yeah good knock by King Kohli and good to see him back in

[00:05:28] the runs it was only second game back and yeah he's straight into his work making his case

[00:05:33] to go and promote the game in different parts of the world as part of the playing 11 so good luck to him man

[00:05:39] yeah and did you see his how he defended cam greed in the first game and red maxil in the second game when

[00:05:46] he told Judd to do in the first game isko saslin is he right because jenny has known for

[00:05:51] to pick through his overs in like one and a half minutes and then Harpreet broad does the same thing

[00:05:56] he's moving fast so Kohli actually says oh so isko isko throwing up the saslin in there at time

[00:06:02] we give him some time maxil starts laughing and Harpreet broad gets him bored in the next ball so

[00:06:08] yeah but what a spell from that guy by the way Harpreet broad also I think two years ago he

[00:06:13] bolded spell which got a b Kohli and maxi yeah and he's bolded spell of two for 13 in four overs

[00:06:20] yeah it's just got something with rcb so so that was fun always always fun to talk about matchups

[00:06:26] and stuff but yes I think the overseas players of rcb need to come alive because they have stacked

[00:06:32] their batting so heavy with them and their bowling is weak which we've discussed and said there's

[00:06:37] nothing new in that so unless you're fast and then exported purple potato to panya also imagine

[00:06:43] who went for 45 in four overs which by the way chatting with our wife Fred that we were like

[00:06:47] that guy like just had two good seasons and kind of our benchmark is to say if you have two good

[00:06:52] seasons that shows consistency like because that's across almost 30 games and he's just fallen off

[00:06:58] the map and to think rcb initially kept him and threw chehella out and then ultimately

[00:07:03] he had to throw him out it's just it's convoluted man it's not just junk wicket swati junkal potato

[00:07:09] I think he was junkal potato but he was getting the wickets right like that's the that's the key thing

[00:07:16] but yeah we'll we'll chat a little bit more about him as we go along so we move to the next game

[00:07:21] which is the csk versus good jrath game and here man to me kind of Chennai batted first

[00:07:29] and everyone just got going right guy quad 46 rcb looked awesome in fact he was lucky

[00:07:38] there's a comment that said Devon Conway who's probably their highest corner with guy quad in the

[00:07:42] last few season isn't being missed right and that's because rcna is just coming and slaughtered

[00:07:47] straight into that opening slot but the guy to talk about is shivam dube now he of course reminds me

[00:07:54] of you Raj with that one knee shot on the groundway where he plays that often he hit 51 of 23 strike

[00:08:02] rate of 221 got them to 206 for six and goodrat it was just kind of never

[00:08:12] really made a push for it right because saha gale vejesh hankar david milla nobody got going

[00:08:18] everyone was single digit or early 20s but did they talk to me about shivam dube right he's the name

[00:08:26] on a lot of our minds he's the name where a lot of people are also questioning why is doni slash

[00:08:33] that quad not bowling him because fans are looking at him as somebody who should be in that playing

[00:08:41] 11 right so doctor me a little bit about shivam dube yes i think dube is coming back from injury

[00:08:47] so that's one thing to remember he's coming back from injury during the domestic season he's

[00:08:51] clearly the designated spin hitter for the csk and man he's doing a job when it comes to that and

[00:08:58] his his work on his back foot play because i think they did attack him a little bit

[00:09:05] with short pitch bowling which was he dealt with it pretty well he went back and crossed and played

[00:09:12] that well i mean he played a blind o winning so it was 51 of 23 balls five sixes in that

[00:09:18] so he's not trying to keep the ball on the ground and i mean it's good signs for team India i think

[00:09:26] he's put his name up as you said the benchmark for consistency i guess in t20 cricket as far as

[00:09:33] you can push that concept is it's two good seasons he had a very good season last year part of

[00:09:38] a champion team trophy winning team and he started off on the on the on the right note here as well

[00:09:45] i mean the good raj titan they're not a not an easy kind of side to they've got

[00:09:52] they've got rashi th Khan they've got saikish or ucaptain the Tamil Nadu team and

[00:09:57] in rangi cricket you've got Mohit Sharma you've got decent bowling and you've got umesh

[00:10:03] yadav bowling bowling scene so yeah and asmatrilla omarzaay who played this game and

[00:10:12] it's a decent attack it's not the best attack we play but i mean in terms of spin putting rashi th Khan

[00:10:18] in saikish or and rashi th Khan went for quite a few runs and this i think and by the did you see

[00:10:22] samir risvi against rashi th Khan yeah sixes i mean i didn't know too much about this guy i know

[00:10:28] csk paid decent for him but i think it's great the fact that they're playing him he said

[00:10:55] this game did you see ab is comment about shiram dube where he said i feel like shiram dube broke

[00:11:08] just didn't feel at peace or at home in the rcb camp so i found that uh that interesting now

[00:11:14] obviously ab has been uh talking on his podcast a lot about revealing koli's second gay not talking

[00:11:21] about rcb culture in the in the camp which shiram dube but i don't know maybe it's just a dhoni

[00:11:27] and flemming thing maybe rcb has a different culture but whatever it is it's i'm glad shiram dube has

[00:11:33] i mean this clearly a culture in csk which allows these young players to blossom i'm going to give

[00:11:39] you an example of a deli player right to shard desh pandem he's gone to csk he bolded the death

[00:11:47] for them last year did really well he's done i mean he seems to have come into it one he's not

[00:11:52] doing that while this season but maybe it's early early still um but there's something that i mean

[00:11:58] the supportive culture goes a long way right and maybe he was not fitting into the into the uh camp in

[00:12:05] rcb for whatever reason it could be and it could be personal reason it could be people that he was

[00:12:10] competing for a spot with somebody we've got our rounders like maxi so maybe he was not getting

[00:12:16] that slot maybe they already had the gator rcb's already always been stacked with batting right

[00:12:21] like holy devilures back in the day gale maxwell uh bk rcb rcb maybe he was not finding his

[00:12:31] his groove and if sometimes it takes him move somewhere else i mean we'll talk about the heartic

[00:12:36] pandia moves back which i think you guys didn't cover the mio versus gt gamut we'll do it with the

[00:12:42] with the other umba indians game later on as he says with a smile on his face having watched

[00:12:48] mombai indians dominate title cricket the solo perfect segway because the next match is srh versus

[00:12:56] mombai indians now when this game started firstly Travis head was back in and that's great because he

[00:13:04] didn't play the first game which was what i was you know you should tell us you should tell us

[00:13:09] about what this is if they haven't heard what happened so i basically that so that uh preview

[00:13:16] show and i didn't call out Travis head because a we had to run through so many players and b

[00:13:23] i didn't think he would start now maybe it's not a great excuse but that was my reasoning

[00:13:27] i didn't call out hasranda as well and i got hate for him too but hasranda has now been ruled out

[00:13:32] officially so and you take that from that call but Travis head comes in and of course he's an

[00:13:40] explosive player before we get into this i just want to say he kind of came in for mako yansen

[00:13:46] did you what do you think having seen srh two games in the last week what do you think happens from

[00:13:52] here because they have given away more than 200 runs and sorry i'm juggling this a little bit but

[00:13:59] since we're talking about Travis head coming in do you see a world in which markrum sits out for mako

[00:14:05] yansen oh i don't know um do you need to have that with the impact sir

[00:14:14] we need to have one of them sit out can you can you stop a foreign player for a foreign player as

[00:14:20] you can right i think i saw that happening but i'm not 100% sure but we should ask ricky who knows

[00:14:26] the rules on the four oversees really well it's just got very aggressive about them as well

[00:14:31] but the fact that it's not been happening let's assume that they're not doing this impact sub

[00:14:36] situation right so i don't know i feel like mako is very valuable i feel like mako is part of

[00:14:44] the core team he's he's one trophies he's part of what you call leadership group but at the same time

[00:14:50] you can't run away from the fact that your your bowling is not the best right so mako yansen adds a

[00:14:59] lot of value especially in that power play i mean we don't have an answer for it but i'm just

[00:15:02] i mean but how's the bowling not good i mean you've got pro bon eshwar you've got pat you've got umraan

[00:15:08] malik you've got some like jade they were not cut shabas i'm a myang khmarkand all of these guys

[00:15:14] they played quite a bit of ipl cricket so i mean yansen yes he brings that tall left arm

[00:15:20] seam angle his bowling has fallen away after the world cup let's not forget after that is solved by

[00:15:31] confidence in it so maybe there's an element of that but yansen can bat i think with just

[00:16:44] so markram played the way he does 42 of 28 but then classin oh my god this guy

[00:16:52] 80 runs of 34 balls i don't see smith on star sports was trying to decode his game it just

[00:16:59] he just looks like he's got time he's keeping kind of very very stable keeping his feet

[00:17:06] planted so that he can pivot where the ball is coming but it's the intent is just crazy and i

[00:17:12] have not seen this kind of consistent reading for a long time yeah different planet man he's

[00:17:17] batting he's batting on a different planet right now it's absolutely insane the bat spilled

[00:17:23] he's getting through he's accessing all areas of the ground i think you and i watched classin

[00:17:28] in 2018 in South Africa in that pink odi and he won the game for them yes and that was David Della

[00:19:52] every player wants to make more money the ip l is your only window to make that kind of money so

[00:19:57] i'm saying yes so why is pandia getting so much hate for it is it because of his attitude or

[00:20:03] because i think it's the attitude i think it's the fact that he's always injured outside of the ip l

[00:20:09] i think the current india captain has found a lot of love in the last six to nine months and so

[00:20:15] he's kind of dethroned him but the level of booing and you know like a straight off i think

[00:20:21] ran on to the field and people were just you know even found that as a way to to make a jive at

[00:20:28] at pandia so it is but the part of the problem was you're performing on the field it's okay

[00:22:03] the point is when class and all play like that maybe maybe roe hit could have stopped that i

[00:22:09] i don't know i just think it's a lot so we saw we saw malinga is also back with mumbha indians

[00:22:15] i saw some stuff on social media where malinga and pandia people are incinerating they have a problem

[00:22:19] and i'm just like i think this is getting out of hand so ravichandran ashrin said it quite nicely

[00:22:25] he said gamul you played under tazulkar and tanzulkar play dandaganguli both of them played under

[00:22:31] drama all three played under emes thoni and all three played on an alkoomle all four of them

[00:22:38] played under emes thoni and emes thoni by the way played under vidad who also has played under roe

[00:22:43] so this is the circle of life with cricket with captains with legends you just gotta take it and

[00:22:51] move on so i think the hate he's getting is a little bit unreal right now and i think only his

[00:22:57] on field performance is gonna stop that so as we you know don't need to go into detail but mumbha

[00:23:03] indians came out all guns blazing like you said right roe hit and kishan both striking over 200

[00:23:09] namandir and tillak like you said also fantastic partnership two young guys really going after the

[00:23:16] bowling and tim david also 42 of 22 went at 190 so when you look at this co-card you're looking at

[00:23:23] harid panya who quit 24 of 20 at the start of 2020 now that's just not exactly forget all the booing

[00:23:31] forget everything that just doesn't look good so it's a tough one to digest man it's not easy for

[00:23:38] yeah i think actually panya kept his cool on the field he was smiling he was okay in fact

[00:23:43] ramex had was dropped pretty early on by tim david and if that catch had been taken it could have

[00:23:48] been a totally completely different story right you don't know how it goes panya was chill he didn't

[00:23:55] seem to be losing his temper and that i think is one good side i mean let's be honest guys like

[00:24:02] this guy's probably going to take over the indian t20 captaincy in in the near future right so

[00:24:08] i think we should just just calm down a little bit of course you should have your loyalty to your

[00:24:14] franchise all of that that's all good fun look at the larger picture it's all about succession

[00:24:19] planning and that i can understand why they brought panya back to Mumbai they're planning for rohid

[00:24:25] when he and to unleash him as a batter and of course he's not going to play forever so they want

[00:24:30] to plan for the future likewise indian cricket should also be planning for the future yes not

[00:24:35] this t20 world cup maybe which i think they've said come out and said rohid will captain and rohid

[00:24:39] is said yes we're at i won't we're at it any cost or whatever right but the next one more than

[00:24:45] likely will be captain biohartic panya as the most important person so let's just take a chill pill

[00:24:53] and let's move past this little thing that's gone on and and let's not get too personal and too

[00:25:00] i think that's a bad look for panya of the of i the franchise to be honest it's yeah and everybody

[00:25:06] else is just sitting around and laughing like to be honest i mean like you're just like

[00:25:10] it's been a moment by it isn't and the call Ashwin gave actually he was like this team looks

[00:25:15] unbeatable other than the fact of internal conflict it's the unsettling factor that was his ex

[00:25:21] factor there's a great call by him i we must admit that and it was actually then i remember

[00:25:27] Mumbai starts slow right in this ip l tournament so i think they're going to come back sky is still

[00:25:32] out i think out for a little longer than expected so waiting to see him but yes i have no doubt

[00:25:38] once they hit the one kid this is going to change and in fact tonight's game Monday as with

[00:25:42] according his Mumbai versus Agasthan so i am going to stay up to watch that DJ very quickly the next

[00:25:48] one before we take a short break Rajasthan versus Delhi capitals almost nothing gave

[00:25:55] no one at all 185 no we have to talk about one thing so let's not go into anything in the

[00:26:00] detail let's just talk about ryan paran the guy who is coming at number four the guy who everyone

[00:26:05] has been waiting to mature for a long time and man i thought he was spectacular i thought he played

[00:26:11] a fantastic knock and single-handedly won them that game because without ryan paranax knock

[00:26:16] Delhi was actually in that game and i think when you look at the numbers they won by 12 runs so

[00:26:24] really just speaks volume to me about his game sanha khar has spoken about him i think the fact

[00:26:28] that they've pushed him up the batting order is a great move and i think that's what we're going to

[00:26:33] see more and more that guys who have been a part of the team and done well and they have a potential

[00:26:39] of future promise teams are going to give them that run away and i mean ryan paranax cemented

[00:26:44] his place fantastic betting yes and from 36 for three Delhi fans would have been like wow

[00:26:50] what a start he played it really well he played kind of the perfect rescue knock for Rajasthan

[00:26:58] right where you've got butler jess wall and who's the third wicked that they lost

[00:27:04] samsam i think so yeah so butler jess wall samsam that they they've lost all three kind of big huge

[00:27:11] players for them and then ryan paranax comes in i think suffering from the flu

[00:27:15] suffering from he had fever he was on antibiotics and kind of just took the game away from them with

[00:27:24] this incredible hitting towards the end as well he like he took nokeh who made a comeback

[00:27:30] not a comeback he made he was back right so he kind of took nokeh apart towards the end

[00:27:36] of the innings and along with shameron headmire i think you should give a little bit of credit

[00:27:42] to the rajasthan sin tank is well by the way they put ashwin up the order and he kind of got the

[00:27:49] momentum going he's called how did he get 29 of 19 yeah he was and i was shocked when i saw that

[00:27:55] no but it was perfect because you kind of lengthened the betting order brought shameron in towards

[00:28:00] the end and it meant that you didn't like deli what we did we had to like bring the betting sub

[00:28:06] in the first game abhishek por el because to get enough run on it ashwin is a good enough bat

[00:28:13] to bat at ipl level and and rescue them from that position so yeah i mean 84 or 45 balls right

[00:28:20] in 186 fantastic knock by by ryan paranax and then deli's chase it got going then it started
