[00:00:00] This is Pop Culture Confidential and I'm Christina Jirling-Biro.

[00:00:15] Hey everyone, welcome to the show. It's already mid-April and that means it's time to take a closer look at those big, splashy, buzzy, action-packed films that make up the summertime in Hollywood.

[00:00:29] There's going to be a lot of returning favorites and franchises, jokers, twisters, Furiosa and Beetlejuice, and big stars and returning collaborators like Yorgos Lantimos and Emma Stone.

[00:00:42] Let me tell you about my guest who is going to help me wade through the summer months in La La Land.

[00:00:50] She is the senior artisans editor at Variety and part of the awards team analyzing the Emmys and Oscar races over there.

[00:00:57] When I do deep dives into anything Hollywood or the artisans, I always seek out Jazz tanker's interviews and analysis. Jazz was last on the show way back when, like I think 2021, and I'm so happy to have her back. Jazz, thank you so much for joining me.

[00:01:15] Oh my gosh, thank you so much for having me. It has been so long. Like too long. I feel it was way before 2021 but who has any sense of time nowadays?

[00:01:24] Yeah, I don't know. Everything is just a blur, right? Well you're going to help me look at this pretty interesting summer we have ahead of us.

[00:01:34] I want to get your thoughts, some extra thoughts on the big artisans that we're going to see coming through and take a look at these buzzy anticipated summer titles that run through like May to August or so.

[00:01:45] But I'm going to start with one that will be released in October but I can't help myself. I have to ask you what you thought of the trailer that just dropped for Joker, Follia De, the upcoming musical with Joaquin Phoenix's back and Lady Gaga playing Harley Quinn.

[00:02:05] And we're going to have to wait for Joaquin to come back and play with him.

[00:02:09] Oh boy, you're so kind. Thank you, thank you.

[00:02:13] Take left. You got a joke for us today.

[00:02:15] We use music to make us whole, to balance the fractures within ourselves.

[00:02:35] I'm nobody. I haven't done anything with my life like you have.

[00:02:46] Let's get out of here.

[00:03:04] What did you think of this trailer?

[00:03:06] It was so good. October 4 is blanked out. It's like no one talked to me. I will be watching it.

[00:03:16] It was really just, you know, there's this build up right? We've seen the stills. We live in this age now where we can see behind the scenes.

[00:03:28] Here's Lady Gaga and Joaquin on the steps at the Bronx. We were getting hint of, oh my gosh, it froze back to the first.

[00:03:40] And then you see the trailer and just the cinematography, Lauren shares cinematography, the costumes by Ariane Phillips.

[00:03:49] And just that combination. It's going to be, I was going to say deadly, but it's going to be amazing.

[00:03:58] It's just this combination of Lady Gaga and Joaquin.

[00:04:02] They're doing that thing again though with the trailer where they're kind of hiding that it's actually a musical?

[00:04:08] Although they kind of like, I mean she says that quote she says at the beginning and then you've got like that shot that pays homage to the Umbrella to Sherbrooke.

[00:04:19] So they're kind of teasing it but...

[00:04:22] I wasn't a big fan of Joker. I found it a bit derivative of Scorsese films in a way that didn't quite do it for me, but I will also be there locked in on October 4.

[00:04:36] It was so divisive though, right? Like you know I think people either loved it or hated it and it's no secret. I love the first one.

[00:04:44] When I saw that it was like because I think people were like, oh Joker is another DC thing and it was so far from that.

[00:04:53] And I came out and was like, I think Joaquin's going to, you know, when they ask and everyone's like, nah, you're crazy.

[00:04:58] Like DC and it's that thing where, and you know you have it where I'm experiencing with Emmys right?

[00:05:06] Where you get to watch a show and you're like, it's so good and then you go to a screening. You go to an event and then it's like wait the rest of the world hasn't seen this.

[00:05:14] So whatever opinion you put out there, you're kind of on your own and the fandom can attack you or not.

[00:05:21] And then they see it and go, oh okay, you're not alone anymore.

[00:05:26] It's a quote to the trailer.

[00:05:51] I'm going to turn a whole family into millionaires.

[00:05:57] What are you going to do now?

[00:05:58] Unfortunately my only skill in life is hitting a ball with a racket.

[00:06:02] I want you to be my coach. I want you to be my coach.

[00:06:06] How often does this happen?

[00:06:08] I have to ask you about challengers which looks hot, hot, hot.

[00:06:13] This is the, what should I call it a sports romance by Luca Guadagnino.

[00:06:19] Stars of course Zendaya, Joshua Conner, Mike Feist and it looks like it's like the hottest thing to come out of Hollywood this year.

[00:06:29] Is that so?

[00:06:30] Put it this way. I think I tweeted Pickleball could never be this sexy.

[00:06:34] It is wild. It is Luca being, you know, I mean he's got the best cast to make a very sexy film.

[00:06:44] It's very, yeah it's a very hot film if you think Call Me By Your Name was hot.

[00:06:50] This is kind of like, it's like for me on par with that.

[00:06:54] And it's a, it's, it's Lurie the three of them. So there's like no other characters and it's just this world.

[00:07:03] And they have a romance right? The three of them or somehow.

[00:07:06] There's a lovely little romance in there.

[00:07:10] And I mean I don't want to spoil it because it's worth, I put it this way.

[00:07:15] It's worth the wait and see it on the big screen.

[00:07:18] And somebody asked us, my wife and I, we play tennis and I was like, do you think like the sweat was exaggerated?

[00:07:26] I was like, no if you play at 12 p.m. like on a Saturday when the sun is blazing down, you do sweat that much.

[00:07:31] Maybe he exaggerated a little bit but.

[00:07:35] Well coming from you because I know you're a huge tennis fan.

[00:07:38] You follow tennis, you play tennis so if you think it's good then I know it's right.

[00:07:43] Zendaya is sort of dueling press tours that have been now with Dune and this one.

[00:07:48] I mean to, to be cheesy, grand slam on the red carpet for this one.

[00:07:56] 100% every day it's like okay what look is she going to come up with?

[00:08:00] Are you tired of seeing your teen or young adult struggle on a path that clearly isn't the right fit?

[00:08:07] Is your teenager confused about which direction to take after high school?

[00:08:12] The future of work is changing rapidly and our kids need to know all of the options available after high school

[00:08:19] so they're empowered to make the choice that is best for them.

[00:08:22] In each episode we explore the latest trends that are shaping the opportunities of today and tomorrow.

[00:08:29] I'm your host Betsy Jewel and this is the High School Hamster Wheel Podcast.

[00:08:35] So we're starting in May now. May 3rd the Fall Guy.

[00:08:39] Directed by stuntman and director David Leach and it's of course about based on the 1980s TV series

[00:08:47] about stunt performers Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Winston Duke, a whole bunch of stunts

[00:08:53] a whole bunch of humor and a nice little romance in there as well.

[00:08:56] Shouts in the heart and you're too late darling you need love, a bad name.

[00:09:03] Anyone but him I didn't approve him you know that.

[00:09:06] You are literally the last person on earth I want to see.

[00:09:09] I slapped the shit out of you I really could.

[00:09:11] And I'm open to that and I'm safer environment.

[00:09:17] You're been a ghost.

[00:09:19] No phone call no text.

[00:09:22] It's not like I didn't want to apologize.

[00:09:24] I didn't have to explain anything it was just a flame.

[00:09:27] So how have you been?

[00:09:29] I hate that thumbs up stunt guy stuff.

[00:09:33] I loved it right like it was so when it ended I was like can we stay can we watch it again

[00:09:44] and I just want to watch the film over and over.

[00:09:49] Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt as they're so that dynamic is great.

[00:09:55] They have so much chemistry.

[00:09:57] I there's a scene in the car where I don't want to ruin it because we've obviously seen it but I'm just going to say the Taylor Swift moment is incredible.

[00:10:09] But it's got it all and Hannah Waddingham is brilliant as a producer.

[00:10:15] She is I again it's kind of like we you know I want to hold back but look out for Hannah Waddingham.

[00:10:24] But it's great to see David do this film and if anyone can pay tribute to the stunt world and to pay tribute to the industry to it's David Leach.

[00:10:38] Because that's really what it does.

[00:10:40] I mean it really is a tribute to this these performers the stunt performers that Ryan Gosling and the rest of them would be nothing without and so it's about time.

[00:10:50] Do you think that this is sort of a first lead up to a possible new Oscar category which everyone really wants?

[00:10:58] I was going to say if if the Academy needs like a case study of why there needs to be a stunt Oscar sit down watch the full guy and this is your case right.

[00:11:10] This is your dissertation with an A plus grade that hopefully will sell it so watch this space and you know I wrote the story the other day that David Leach and his production company or stunt company 87 North.

[00:11:26] Actually this film will have the first stunt designer credit so it was approved by a stag after a DGA and it's recognizing.

[00:11:38] It's basically saying that you know it's not just a stunt coordinator coordinator it take you know there's a design aspect somebody has to actually put that together so.

[00:11:50] Yeah design the whole.

[00:11:53] So by no fight. Yeah, so now he's a work really hard for that and it's an incredible you know Chris Ohara is getting it who's got an incredible body of work so it's a step in the right direction.

[00:12:06] And in terms of this amazing period that it's been for Ryan Gosling both with Barbie and of course is show stopping number at the Oscars that how do you think this is going to go is it going to be a big hit.

[00:12:20] I think so I think you know people want to come out and see it because the trailer just looks so good and you know again it's like we're you know we have our bubble and it's like oh well you know we have to watch it anyway and then you know I sent out to one of my friends and I was like hey do you want to watch this like what do you think of this.

[00:12:39] And the second I got a yes was like okay that just kind of confirms that this could be a big film and to your Ryan Gosling point like I think this is going to break him out of the.

[00:12:50] Ken bubble like mold that he's been stuck at right not right I shouldn't say right the Ken you know association thing that he's been in for the last year I feel like he's going to be very relieved to be back in action.

[00:13:06] That's a I think so too I think this has a little bit for everyone I mean if you really have all the references to the industry as you were saying all the humor you have this great love story and action and I think this could appeal to a really big many quadrants of the movie goers coming out here in May.

[00:13:24] So moving on to the 10th we have another one in a series it's Kingdom of Planet of the Apes.

[00:13:31] How do you feel about this.

[00:13:33] Are you done with the series or are you looking forward to it.

[00:13:37] Um, you know, I'm curious.

[00:13:40] I, you know the trailer looks good.

[00:13:42] Am I ever done with it you know, it's that thing it's what you know that the VFX team and the behind it.

[00:13:51] Yeah, no I'm looking forward to it.

[00:13:53] What about you.

[00:13:54] Yeah, I mean I'll definitely see it and I think that the the trailer the VFX looks absolutely amazing. I can't say it's the top top of my list.

[00:14:03] Kind of it would be interesting to see if they can actually what they do with the story. And if it has an emotional grip on us the viewers but who's directing this now let me see West.

[00:14:16] West ball did what has he done maze runner.

[00:14:21] So it'll be interesting I was like Willie Macey and everything and he's apparently in it so.

[00:14:46] This work capable of many great things.

[00:14:50] They could fly like eagles fly.

[00:14:55] They couldn't speak across oceans.

[00:15:02] But now it is our time and it is my kingdom.

[00:15:12] And then we have one that I will be sitting front row for hopefully maybe it on its Furiosa a Mad Max saga it premieres on May 24th before then it will be at council will know what people think the George Miller is back in a prequel where

[00:15:30] is a man Taylor joy is taking the titular character Chris Hemsworth also with us. I think this looks just so awesome. I cannot wait.

[00:15:41] What are you hearing same.

[00:15:43] I wish I were going to count to watch it but I'm just going to have to wait till they show it in LA.

[00:15:50] But yeah George Miller is back on your Taylor joy. I mean everything about the film just looks amazing.

[00:15:56] George Miller I mean in terms of the artisans you see coming in this film what is he serving us.

[00:16:03] I mean I think cinematography wise it's going to be amazing I think the sound of this film is going to be really you know I think it's one of those things that like see it in and I'm actually just see it on the bigger screen.

[00:16:17] The set look incredible I mean the first almost anything to go on. This is going to be great. Jenny Bevin did the costume so she's back again. She did Fury Road.

[00:16:29] So you know I can't wait to see what she does with Anya.

[00:16:33] Can you imagine filling Charlize shoes but I yeah I mean those are big shoes to fill right but I think I'm just going to be pretty.

[00:16:42] Oh she's great casting amazing right.

[00:16:48] Whatever you have to do.

[00:16:54] However long it takes.

[00:16:59] Promise me you'll find your way home.

[00:17:06] You're yourself.

[00:17:09] Give me this promise.

[00:17:11] I'm curious to see if you're looking forward to this bad boys ride or die Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are back the buddy cop action comedy that was a huge hit of course it what do you say.

[00:17:24] You know I mean I love the first film which is crazy to think that was made in 1995.

[00:17:31] When you put when you put when you look at that you're like wait this was done so long ago and it to me like the first one is great.

[00:17:39] And it's so much fun and they are a great you know they're great pairing. So I mean yeah I'm curious.

[00:17:47] That one had a lot of the many different aspects like we were talking about in the fall guy it had humor it has action it has lots of fun references and they were great duo so I mean I'm not I'm thinking that

[00:18:00] I'll be able to do this again and elevate it to 2024.

[00:18:03] Come on Mike slow down.

[00:18:05] We are late.

[00:18:06] My stomach Mike I need a ginger ale.

[00:18:12] Get a ginger ale and nothing else.

[00:18:15] I know those dogs fresh for the man yesterday.

[00:18:17] Give me one put some relish on that motherfucker.

[00:18:20] Open the register.

[00:18:21] Stay right there.

[00:18:23] That's Skittles on the counter Marcus.

[00:18:24] This ain't mine Mike.

[00:18:25] Yes it is.

[00:18:26] The fuck up.

[00:18:27] Marcus get in the car.

[00:18:28] He has a gun to my head.

[00:18:29] One deal with him you want to deal with me.

[00:18:30] Sorry sir but I got it.

[00:18:35] Hold on one more.

[00:18:36] Oh shoot a police.

[00:18:39] How is the industry reacting to Will Smith now sort of post slap is that a forgotten issue or what do you think I don't think I think the industry is still in that slap world.

[00:18:57] I think the public though will be you know there's this divide between critics and and the general public I think the general public will come out for this film I could be completely wrong though but you know it's got everything that audiences want from a summer film.

[00:19:17] And they know what they're going to get like they know they're going to get lost but it will have to be big it will have to be better than anything they've ever done before because of that whole slap dust that still is.

[00:19:32] Because it hasn't settled I don't think it has right.

[00:19:35] I don't think so either I do think you have a point that the viewers and the fans are more forgiving but it's the slap and it's his wife the books that came out afterwards it was just sort of everything felt a little weird and very distance from fans somehow.

[00:19:55] So it'll be interesting to see how he deals with this press tour because he has to come out he has to be funny he has to really he has to be everywhere in order to sell a summer movie and it'll be interesting to see if they do that and and how the industry reacts to that and and and I guess if this one goes really well he'll battle be it sort of.

[00:20:20] Then we're done and will Smith is just on the road.

[00:20:22] We've forgiven him and yeah.

[00:20:25] Many box office that's that's we're fine then it feels sort of like a test.

[00:20:31] I agree.

[00:20:32] I agree.

[00:20:34] All right another sequel Pixar is back with inside out to on June 14 that's the sequel to inside out directed by Kelsey man and wonderful cast of voices Amy polar Phyllis Smith Lewis black.

[00:20:52] Kyle McClacklin and also Maya Hawke well I think she's playing anxiety if I remember.

[00:20:59] Yeah and my absolute favorite aoe debris so I think on paper this looks really wonderful.

[00:21:08] This is joy coming to you live in Riley's mind makes some noise.

[00:21:14] Yeah.

[00:21:15] This is in the house.

[00:21:18] It's hangers.

[00:21:19] Let me at him.

[00:21:22] We got to get our mouth guard people fear.

[00:21:24] No no that's not our disgust glad to have her on our team.

[00:21:29] Our little girls growing up so fast.

[00:21:32] Sorry.

[00:21:34] It should be nothing but smooth sailing.

[00:21:37] Hello.

[00:21:38] I'm anxiety where can I put my stuff.

[00:21:42] The fact that they're introducing anxiety.

[00:21:45] I think if you remember when they first released like the character they introduced the four new emotions and everyone's star anxiety was like oh this is going to hit us really hard.

[00:21:56] I mean it's too much too much.

[00:21:57] Too much.

[00:21:59] So on point and then they've got anger and disgust and sad and I think Phyllis Smith is playing sadness but yeah it's going to be I think it's going to be so on point and I think many adults are going to feel very triggered when they when they see this.

[00:22:19] So yeah I can't wait to see because it feels like they need a hit right fix our yeah because.

[00:22:27] I've had everything come out in the pandemic do you know what I mean it's like Luca came out in the pandemic and red came out in the you know and I think.

[00:22:38] People really love inside out the first one.

[00:22:42] I feel like this could be the Pixar is really back with inside out to a lot of anticipation for this like people really want to see this one so.

[00:22:53] This it would be really nice if this hit it out of the park and they were sort of back because I just I know they're doing another toy story and when they do good things it's just for adults and kids.

[00:23:07] It's some of my most emotional movie moments with my children I have to say watching Pixar so I'd love it to be sort of a comeback.

[00:23:16] What's so great about Pixar is that they and Disney to is they know how to cater to do the adult joke.

[00:23:26] And they know how to do how to do like the kid jokes that even the parents can appreciate but like the adult jokes is why you know you look at the kid and like oh you didn't get I did and it's really funny bring it on.

[00:23:38] Does you know that feeling when you're like oh this is too early we don't need this already but here is the opposite for me.

[00:23:46] I want this every week and this is your ghost long the most an Emma Stone already coming back with a new movie after their Oscar success with kinds of kindness on June 21st an incredible cast.

[00:23:59] Emma Stone of course Jesse Plemons Willem Dafoe Margaret Quali Hong Chow and a whole bunch of more people and the trailer looks absolutely bonkers bananas wonderful.

[00:24:11] What do you think is it too early to come back after poor things.

[00:24:15] No 100% bring it on bring.

[00:24:18] Yeah bring it.

[00:24:19] I mean it's your ghost Emma now we've got Willem in the fold and yes that trailer when they announced it's going to can too so you're going to get to see it there.

[00:24:30] I mean how good does that look.

[00:24:32] You know I remember there were rumblings of them working on it that they're filled together and they were being very coy about it but it's like why is everybody saying why are they.

[00:24:44] Like yeah we asked them about it and there was nothing and then all of a sudden like here you go we're back.

[00:24:50] I don't even know how they had time to do this if considering both you know the incredible production around poor things and the press tour and Oscar campaigning and and it just amazing this seems to be an anthology film.

[00:25:05] This is it.

[00:25:08] The moment of truth.

[00:25:13] Do you see their partnership just going on forever.

[00:25:24] I mean I hope so I mean what a great partnership what a great they're such great collaborators and I'm so glad they you know they've got it going and Emma's a producer on this again.

[00:25:36] So very very excited.

[00:25:38] Well his female characters and the actresses that he uses are always so amazing so can't wait.

[00:25:45] All right a horror film here we're moving to another genre and that's long legs which is going to premiere on July 12 and I want to talk about this because this is the director is Osgood Perkins son of course of Anthony Perkins legendary psycho actor.

[00:26:03] It has Nicholas Cage is in it Blair Underwood.

[00:26:07] It's a neon film I know absolutely nothing about this I just thought it sounded like an incredible team behind it with a lot of promise what do you know.

[00:26:18] I know nothing to aside from the trailer that came out like early this year but the fact that it's like FBI serial killer.

[00:26:31] You know that's the the the logline.

[00:26:35] It's going to be very interesting and Nicholas Cage I mean he's having a run isn't he.

[00:26:43] 100% I mean I'm speechless that like you know he can go from something like Mandy and then he does and then he does long legs like yeah it's going to be very interesting.

[00:26:56] Dream scenario.

[00:26:58] Yeah.

[00:27:00] Have you seen anything by Osgood Perkins.

[00:27:02] I have not know but you know when you look at his.

[00:27:08] Have you I don't know if you've seen his photos but he totally looks like his dad which is.

[00:27:14] Yeah not to get into the net boba anything but it's always interesting that you know sort of following you know in Datham and Cronenberg family is the same thing sort of following your dad's but not only in the industry but also in the genre.

[00:27:28] 100% and he's moving from like acting to direct writing and directing so what's you know I'm curious I will I will yeah I will be there.

[00:27:38] And it's always nice with the horror film sort of mid summer.

[00:27:41] I like that.

[00:27:43] All right I keep asking you this but there's so many movies this year which I feel like do we need this again July 19th it's time for twisters which of course you guys all remember twister.

[00:27:55] This is directed by Lee Isaac Chung which was a surprise to me did directed one of my favorite movies Minari seems like different animal if you ask me Daisy Edgar Glones and the big star Glenn Powell.

[00:28:14] Tyler Owens calls himself tornado ringler.

[00:28:20] If you feel it.

[00:28:23] I said if you feel it.

[00:28:24] Jason.

[00:28:27] All right here we go.

[00:28:35] Oh she's perfect.

[00:28:36] She's gorgeous.

[00:28:38] What do you know about this.

[00:28:39] This has to be some incredible artisans behind this as well.

[00:28:43] I mean I think yeah to your point of Lee Isaac Chung directing list I mean I will be there because as you said he's directed one of our favorite films.

[00:28:53] Yeah I mean it's going it's again it's crazy to think that that first film came out in 1996 and the whole it was like OK wait it's time now for us to do a follow up.

[00:29:05] Yeah I think artisan wise again you know it's always like how do you actually create a twister like we're not doing the stocking anymore from Wizard of Oz right.

[00:29:16] Right exactly it's like how are you going to pull it off kind of thing but it's going to be yeah I mean I'm curious to see the cinematographers Dan Mendele Terrell and Shropch as the editor and she's a great you know her body of work includes the woman king.

[00:29:34] She's did love and basketball she works with Gina Prince by foot a lot.

[00:29:39] And she did when they see her so I know she's a fabulous editor.

[00:29:43] So I'm curious to see how how it how it comes together.

[00:29:50] And all we know is that it's going to be a lot of more twisters because it's not twister anymore it's twisters so they will be multiple twisters.

[00:30:01] As opposed to the first one.

[00:30:03] What do you say about Glenn Powell he's also having some kind of amazing year isn't he.

[00:30:09] I mean talk about his moment right it's kind of it's like everywhere you go it's a Glenn Powell in this film I'm how I'm here good for him I mean you know he is he's a movie star right like.

[00:30:20] Let me ask you about that just a quick reflection like Glenn Powell and Ryan Gosling who are really sort of in these big blockbusters and as you said they're they're major Hollywood stars really movie stars are doing great press they're doing everything right.

[00:30:36] What do you think would be interesting for them to do I think like Zendaya someone who goes from huge things to something like challengers and works in lots of different genres and lots of different sort of indie and big.

[00:30:49] What do you think these guys should be doing what would you like to see.

[00:30:53] I think this I think the same like you know it's like.

[00:30:57] The Glenn I'd like I don't know what I'd like to say I mean he did devotion right he was writing devotion.

[00:31:03] He did you know he did top gun.

[00:31:06] I mean I guess and he can do romcom obviously I mean obviously can do romcom I think maybe I'd see when I could like like you said like what Zendaya is done like she knows she's gone from like.

[00:31:17] Doing and you know the big blockbusters to like.

[00:31:21] Challenges so maybe if I see him in something small to like an a 24.

[00:31:27] Oh yeah right on neon.

[00:31:30] Yes and Ryan Gosling was on his third Oscar nomination what will give him that award do you think.

[00:31:37] Oh my gosh.

[00:31:40] I mean how close did we think for a moment that he could get supporting act like where you were you on that train.

[00:31:46] Number two just for a little second.

[00:31:48] I think I put him at number one for a moment and I was like I don't know.

[00:31:53] Like it was the perfect thing.

[00:31:56] I don't know right because he was great in the notebook that he was great in La La Land Blade Runner.

[00:32:03] I mean I love his body of work.

[00:32:05] And then once this even small like the half Nelson and believer addicts and neo Nazis and I mean he can do everything I'm wondering if he needs to go back to something like that.

[00:32:15] Like Lars on the real girl which I love.

[00:32:19] That was what 2007.

[00:32:22] So I don't know yeah I think to your point maybe he needs to do something like that.

[00:32:28] Who knows.

[00:32:29] I think I'm seeing a Robert Downey junior trajectory for him.

[00:32:33] It'll take a while.

[00:32:35] 100%.

[00:32:36] I think we'll get to probably five years from now and it'll be like that's when he'll he'll win for something like.

[00:32:44] Yeah, we'll see.

[00:32:45] We'll talk again then and see we were right.

[00:32:49] The new Chris Nolan.

[00:32:52] Okay.

[00:32:53] This is one I knew nothing about before researching for our conversation borderlands we're in August now August 9th it's Eli Roth it's a science fiction and what interested me in this this we're talking about these big buzzy things it's a video game series but it's this ensemble cast it's Kate

[00:33:13] Kevin Hart Jack Black.

[00:33:16] Edgar Ramirez Jamie Lee Curtis and that's just a few of them.

[00:33:20] That's a stacked cast of really big actors of a certain generation.

[00:33:26] Yeah, like I've seen the photos.

[00:33:29] I mean Kate Branshup playing a bandit and if you if you look at her or just the images that have been released from this film it looks.

[00:33:39] I mean, I'm not a I'm not a video game I just want to put that out there but I will be watching this film.

[00:33:46] I'm curious about the act like I feel like I don't need to know about the game I think it's just going to be accessible.

[00:33:54] Legend has it that there's this massive treasure hidden in some secret vault.

[00:34:02] And if you go hunting for it, you'd better take any help you can get.

[00:34:10] Because it's on the weirdest most dangerous dumpster fire of a world in the universe.

[00:34:18] God I hate this plan.

[00:34:20] Someone who doesn't know anything about this is this a big video game that is like a huge.

[00:34:26] I mean, I think I think it is right because that video game world is a whole beast unto itself and gaming is one of the biggest industries right now.

[00:34:39] But I think there's definitely a lot of interest.

[00:34:41] There's definitely a lot of like when the public came out I saw a lot of that on my timeline not from our little lovely film Twitter bubble and beyond so yeah, I mean it could be great it might not be great who knows but I'm just there for the makeup and the costumes because they look.

[00:34:57] Amazing.

[00:34:58] Yeah, I mean not that keep bunch it needs anything to look amazing but I like to see her and Jamie Lee Curtis kicking some butt.

[00:35:07] Yes, but what about Eli Roth does he is he usually is in this space.

[00:35:11] I don't.

[00:35:12] I mean, not really right I mean I think this is going to be his first because you think he does horror horror.

[00:35:19] So, maybe it'd be bloody and gory which is what audiences love right now right like to your point of horror films coming out throughout the year like the first time and came out was just been released and it's doing okay because people love.

[00:35:35] Love go horror so and immaculate and there's course monkey man which I really liked but it's yeah very very violent violent I was really impressed with him that as a directorial debut.

[00:35:47] But yeah, I mean, I'm sure Eli will put some blood in there too.

[00:35:52] All right we have a couple more of these do we need this coming up here but I guess that's sort of the summer fair alien Romulus August 21.

[00:36:02] This is the seventh installment in the alien franchise directed by Fede Alvarez.

[00:36:09] I'm sure someone I'm adoring at the moment that's Kaylee Spani of course Priscilla and Civil War. She does a great job in. Are you up for seventh installment of alien.

[00:36:22] I mean, I don't know.

[00:36:25] Do we need it but I will. I mean I agree with you 100% Kaylee Spani is just someone to watch right like she is rising.

[00:36:34] This is totally different from Civil War, and it's totally different from Priscilla and she was brilliant and Priscilla please go out and watch if you haven't seen it.

[00:36:44] I don't know if we need another alien I mean I'm such a, I'm loyal to the first three.

[00:36:52] And then off that I've just kind of like.

[00:36:54] Oh same same yeah right.

[00:36:57] I think this is one I'll go to if someone I like if you or someone I respect says yeah, this has something different but I can't explain is now she's someone who is just choosing projects from all different corners of the Hollywood

[00:37:13] universe and I am loving it.

[00:37:15] So for that reason it'll be interesting to see what she does here.

[00:37:20] And do we need another crow.

[00:37:23] I am speechless.

[00:37:27] This one has actually gotten some backlash because the crow which course was a big film and also had a very tragic accident as randomly was accidentally shot on it then it has all this baggage and background so I know a lot of people are weary about the new crow coming on

[00:37:47] August 23.

[00:37:49] And it is coming for sure.

[00:37:52] Didn't need to be rebooted 100% enough like that first, the original crow is such.

[00:38:01] It's such a cult classic.

[00:38:04] And it's kind of a perfect film.

[00:38:08] Brandon is amazing.

[00:38:10] Everything about that film is great, like don't need.

[00:38:14] It didn't need to be in my opinion it didn't need to be rebooted.

[00:38:18] Yes, I will go and watch it because that's the nature of all what.

[00:38:23] But I don't see the need for it.

[00:38:27] I wasn't thrilled with the trailer.

[00:38:32] What's the first thing you liked about me.

[00:38:36] I thought that you're quite brilliant and broken.

[00:38:41] You feel like my person.

[00:38:43] You feel like my pass.

[00:38:46] What's the worst thing you've ever done?

[00:38:49] I saw things.

[00:38:53] I should never seen any of it.

[00:38:57] Does have the Bill Scoshgourd, which is also someone who's having quite a year and seems to be in everything.

[00:39:05] And what I am looking forward to is Dave Eggers Nosferatu on Christmas Day with Bill Scoshgourd that.

[00:39:12] That I think is going to be something to behold.

[00:39:16] So it played a cinema con the same day as Wicked and all I can see on my timeline was wait for this Bill Scoshgourd is going to be looks this looks so amazing.

[00:39:31] And yeah, Bill plays the count obviously.

[00:39:35] So I'm really excited for that.

[00:39:39] I don't think either alien or the crow are going to be huge.

[00:39:43] I mean, I'm just going to take a leap and say, I think the box office is going to be less than what they're hoping for.

[00:39:49] I think people are going to be wary of seeing it unless unless word of mouth helps this film.

[00:39:57] But here's one that I think could be a big deal.

[00:40:01] And this is the first week of September, September 6th.

[00:40:04] And this is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which is of course we could ask do we need another one but I actually think this is going to be fun.

[00:40:12] I love the whole concept that's Tim Burton is back. Michael Keaton is back when on a writer's back and I love Jen Artega another movie with Willem Dafoe I think we've mentioned him three times already Monica Baluci.

[00:40:25] I think this could be fun and this could be sort of like a stranger things or something where the generation who grew up with this is going to bring their kids to this because they're the ones who grew up with Wednesday and I just see a lot of people going to this.

[00:40:39] What are your thoughts?

[00:40:40] I agree. I agree. I feel like Beetlejuice is loved and there's been enough time for you know it's it's the thing where I feel like Tim Burton would not have done this if he didn't feel it was right.

[00:41:10] Yeah, the casting is amazing. I love that Michael Keaton is back. I cannot imagine anyone else playing Beetlejuice anyway.

[00:41:37] It's like it is such a signature role for him. Winona being back Winona's you know he doesn't love Winona right?

[00:41:47] Yeah, yeah, Jen Artega I mean it's going to be so much fun and if you've seen the trailer the callback it does to the original with the Harry Belafonte of it all it's going to be.

[00:42:01] And also Tim has his group of artisans so like Danny Elfman is doing the score Colleen Atwood is doing the costume.

[00:42:10] I'm sold.

[00:42:12] I just hope it doesn't have the Ghostbusters sort of thing where we've done this enough now and they don't really have the story that hooks us as much as you want but I'm hoping that the screenplay here is so good that it hooks us with all the old references and all the new ones.

[00:42:33] I think we're safe like I really believe in Tim Burton and for this one. And I also believe that, you know if it wasn't right, would Michael come back?

[00:42:45] Well, I depends on the paycheck maybe but on the other hand he doesn't need one.

[00:42:51] Yeah it's going to be an exciting start to the autumn full winter get us ready for everything.

[00:43:00] So there's one big movie I want to talk about but is there anything else we sort of got through the big buzzy blockbuster movies of those months. Is there anything else I missed that you want to mention?

[00:43:12] I was going to say we mentioned Daisy Ridley Jones right she has a film that's coming out that I've seen I think it opens in May.

[00:43:21] I think this film is kind of going a little bit under the radar but it's called Young Woman in the Sea and it's a true story. I have seen it and it's about an American that swims the English Channel.

[00:43:36] Daisy is so good in this if you're a fan of hers like it just totally, you know she's another one you know people see her and they think of Ray and Star Wars and this totally just allows her to like flex her acting chart.

[00:43:51] And she's really really good in this film. I forget what day it opens but sometime in May and it's called Young Woman in the Sea.

[00:44:00] We just saw a movie about a woman swimming Cuba to Florida in Nighat of course but is this suspenseful in another way or?

[00:44:10] The cinematography of this is so good and she sucks you in right from the beginning. There's a beautiful hot, you're rooting for her so much like you just never, you want her to succeed and I think that's what's so great about this.

[00:44:27] You might know the ending because it's a true story. People get so upset when they're like you just ruined the ending but it's a true story.

[00:44:35] People are very spoiler sensitive to true stories which is kind of weird.

[00:44:40] It blows me away but no she's so good in it and it's just it's very emotional to like at the screen so many people were like tearing up.

[00:44:52] So yeah this is a different you know Nighat was its own film and this is totally on the phone.

[00:45:01] Looking forward to that. I want to take the last few minutes here to talk to you about Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis which and sort of get your industry inside on this.

[00:45:12] Now what we know about this movie it's a huge movie he's paid his own money as is per usual for Francis Ford Coppola through many decades.

[00:45:21] It's the movie that stars Adam Driver. What we heard last week was that he had had a screening for it in LA and the buzz was that there weren't buyers.

[00:45:30] The latest news is that it will be competing in Cannes but how do you explain this that there's no buyers. Is this a red flag? What's going on here?

[00:45:41] It's like it's Francis Ford Coppola. His body of work is incredible. You know this is the guy that gave us the Godfather and Apocalypse Now, right?

[00:45:50] It's so difficult to say without having seen the film. I mean the cast is incredible but then you know there are stories that there's trades have written that Variety has written to about like a plot.

[00:46:02] Well it's a wild plot. So my question is like how how wild is it because we accept wild storyline.

[00:46:10] I think look at poor things you know that's wild even challenges a little bit wild. So what is it that Francis has done that so well that nobody's out there ready to buy it?

[00:46:23] He wants a huge amount of money for the marketing and is that what they don't believe in? You think that they'll get their money back or obviously always comes down to a question of money?

[00:46:35] It's about the money right? It's like are people going to the synopsis as like an architect wants to rebuild New York as a utopia following a devastating disaster. So it's a sci-fi film.

[00:46:49] I mean yeah I mean I think that's the question right? Like does that appeal to people also the cast has Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, John Carlos, Pesido who is such an incredible actor. Also Shia LaBeouf so you know again.

[00:47:06] You mentioned incredible work he did but the past decade or so the movies he's done have not been huge successes Tetris and things like that which I'm sure as Hollywood looks today it's a risk.

[00:47:21] I really want to see it huge copula fent both father and daughter and every single cousin and cage and everyone is in my favorite bag of so I'm happy if I get to see it and count hopefully if everything works out but I'm worried that it'll get bought up by Netflix before and as Netflix can't go to count it won't be there

[00:47:45] but at the same time I would be happy if someone bought it but it feels like something like that could happen ahead of time.

[00:47:51] I feel he doesn't want it on a streamer I think he wants a studio like a major studio that's not a streamer to buy it. That's what I'm hearing that's what I'm feeling.

[00:48:04] If that's the only offer.

[00:48:05] I don't know how desperate the situation is but.

[00:48:09] But I don't know I mean I'm like you like you know I love Dracula you know that's another like I think we're just copula fans right the end so I'll go see it no matter what but again it's like is this an easy sell and you know to just jump on that point it's like Scorsese and killers of the fire mode.

[00:48:26] I love that film I think it's one of his top five films ever but getting people to watch that film was like they're like jazz you know what what are you loving I was like go see killers of the fire and then the runtime was off putting for them so it's kind of like an even the storyline

[00:48:41] I'm like but wait you know and then it's that thing of Scorsese copula people don't automatically go to that anymore it's like but if we're like oh Ryan Gosling's in it great sign me up I'll buy a ticket.

[00:48:54] A generational shift.

[00:48:55] Yes.

[00:48:56] It'll be interesting to see how Ridley Scott's gladiator if people will go to that or if that also feels like an old relic or I mean Paul Mescal in a gladiator suits is fine with me.

[00:49:08] And it will be there will be there but will the public buy that right like and I think that's the I think that's why nobody has snapped it up yet because it's like are we going to just be able to sell tickets to this film.

[00:49:23] Well I'm supposing that there's a lot of people who would want to snap it up but it's so expensive. There's maybe two or three today in the state of Hollywood that actually could so I think that's sort of the issue.

[00:49:35] Can you imagine like a 24 getting this that would be amazing all the stuff they've done with Sophia's movies and I think it's a question of money to be able to maneuver this huge megalopolis before I let you go.

[00:49:50] Can you say three films you're really looking forward to this year and looking forward to personally and that you think are going to be sort of in the Oscar conversation.

[00:50:00] We've discussed all of them.

[00:50:02] Joker two is right there at the top of my list cannot cannot wait for it. I love everything.

[00:50:09] I'm just ready for it inside out to I want to just I love that and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. That's my 123 which of them get into the Oscar conversation remains to be seen but I think you know I feel inside out will get in for sure.

[00:50:29] Joker two who knows. I mean having said that it got a lot of the first one got a lot of Oscar nominations I wouldn't be surprised if it's a contender again this year and many of the crops.

[00:50:42] People say that it's going to get an Oscar nomination she's she the Academy loves her so that would be great to see and then yeah Beetlejuice is just kick off the fall season.

[00:50:54] Look if Lady Gaggan Zandaya are on Oscar campaign carpets. I'm happy.

[00:51:00] We're going to be very happy.

[00:51:02] It's just going to be entertainment right there jazz thank you so much it's been too long. Everyone of course check out her work both the interviews analysis on the artisans you do a whole bunch of panels, many of them are out on YouTube and you can watch in there.

[00:51:17] Thank you so much for joining me.

[00:51:19] Oh my gosh Christian thank you so much for having me back.

[00:51:54] I'm going to be back with another film making duo and cohost of sleep over cinema our show where we analyze the films that created the collective unconscious of the girls gaze and days of the late 90s and early 2000s.

[00:52:07] Princess Diaries the cheetah girls Aquamarine Cinderella the one starring brandy.

[00:52:12] We haven't stopped thinking about these movies since we first saw them and we want you to rewatch them and review them with us are these movies as bad as critics would have us believe.

[00:52:23] Do we even care if they are we are always unpacking that very question on sleep over cinema.

[00:52:29] Check out sleep over cinema wherever you get your podcasts or at evergreenpodcast.com.

[00:52:35] See you soon.
