[00:01:28] Yeah, I don't know the results yet
[00:01:31] You obviously do but before you tell me about them
[00:01:35] Let's talk about the songs that made it to the finals a little bit
[00:01:38] I did some research on them
[00:01:39] You did some research on them and I got to say these two songs that are pitted up against each other
[00:01:44] Counting Crows, Mr. Jones and Basket Case from Green Day. They're two of the best songs of the 90s
[00:01:50] For sure. I mean we're just talking about singles released in 1994
[00:01:54] And you've literally got two of the heaviest hitters of the entire decade
[00:01:58] Pitted against each other right now. I mean if that doesn't just add more credence to your theory that
[00:02:05] 1994 is
[00:02:07] The best year of everything. I mean, I don't know what does yeah
[00:02:12] Let's talk about counting crows a little bit first who okay if I had to guess
[00:02:17] Don't tell me yet. Don't tell our listeners yet
[00:02:20] But if I had to guess I would think that this is our runner-up
[00:02:24] Even though I voted for that I voted for mr. Jones in the finals as did I
[00:02:29] So mr. Jones
[00:02:31] For those who don't know was the debut single from counting crows it was released in December of 1993
[00:02:37] As the lead single from August and everything after but it debuted on the Billboard Radio songs chart in January of
[00:02:45] 1994 and then it entered the top 10 five weeks later in May of 1994 it reached its peak US chart position of number five and
[00:02:55] The band's surprise success happened to coincide Matt with
[00:03:01] Kurt Cobain's death which
[00:03:04] strangely enough
[00:03:05] The day people are hearing this episode the date comes out is 30 years from the day Kurt Cobain died
[00:03:13] And you know that that messed up Adam a bit. Yeah, I saw that he said that
[00:03:19] In an interview he said we heard that Kurt had shot himself
[00:03:22] And it really scared the hell out of me because I thought these things in my life are getting so out of control
[00:03:27] Which don't really know what he meant by that
[00:03:32] Unless he was feeling
[00:03:35] Some of the things that Kurt was feeling I well
[00:03:39] I can I can shine a little light on it honestly not directly
[00:03:43] But do you know what he changes the lyrics in mr. Jones to during many live performance?
[00:03:49] so I it's that one line where it's
[00:03:52] When everybody loves you that's just about as funky as you can be he changed it to wait changes it to
[00:03:59] That's just about as fucked up as you can be is that what you're talking about
[00:04:03] He says that and the other line a changes is
[00:04:06] In the song in the recorded version song he says we all want to be big big stars, but we've got different reasons for that
[00:04:12] He now sings
[00:04:14] We all want to be big big stars and then we get second thoughts about that
[00:04:19] So I think that for him
[00:04:22] It wasn't like oh Adam was like shooting up heroin like the rest of them
[00:04:25] But it was more like they were exploding and he was probably having a lot of second guesses
[00:04:32] about
[00:04:34] Stardom and that was something that Kurt talked about so much
[00:04:37] And I think that that's why because he did write a song about it on the following album
[00:04:43] Recovering the satellites which was called catapult and to me when I hear that title
[00:04:47] I think of like being catapulted into stardom. So I think that that was a lot of what his
[00:04:54] wrestling was was you know
[00:04:56] They they say it all the time you people dream of being this big famous celebrity
[00:05:02] But I think that there is a ceiling of how fun that is when you become an absolute superstar where
[00:05:09] Every single thing that you do is being scrutinized and looked at and
[00:05:14] Analyzed and discussed and I think you know counting crows blows up
[00:05:18] He's dating two different women from friends like I'm sure
[00:05:21] The spotlight was hot and heavy on
[00:05:25] At that point when all this happened, right?
[00:05:28] It's funny Matt last night. I went to see Bayside play in Pittsburgh and we were hanging out with them back in their
[00:05:35] dressing room and we got on to the subject I
[00:05:38] one way or another we got onto the subject of counting crows and
[00:05:42] Okay, I was talking about the last time I saw them in Pittsburgh
[00:05:45] And of course as we all know when counting crows plays live Adam Durich just goes off the rails with
[00:05:52] The lyrics in the melodies he plays it really fast and loose and it's hard to sing along a lot of people hate it
[00:05:59] I don't mind it. I think it's fun and funny
[00:06:02] But Anthony from Bayside was saying that man, I hate it
[00:06:05] But he said do you know why he does that and I was like what do you mean?
[00:06:09] I just figured he wants to be like I think Bob Dylan does that he literally says in this song
[00:06:13] I want to be Bob Dylan. I was under the impression
[00:06:16] He didn't want people to sing along with him
[00:06:18] Well Anthony said which I had never heard this before I
[00:06:22] Was talking about the first time I ever saw counting crows play live on Saturday night live
[00:06:28] And I hadn't heard them yet
[00:06:29] Yeah, that was my first time seeing them or hearing them and I remember me and my dad laughing about him being like
[00:06:34] That was the worst. That was so bad. What is he doing?
[00:06:38] but what Anthony said was that
[00:06:41] so
[00:06:43] When Adam Durich's went into the booth to sing
[00:06:46] He didn't have
[00:06:48] Lyrics or melodies or anything. He just went in there and
[00:06:51] Rift like just completely off the top of his head
[00:06:54] So he would do four or five times through the song and then the producer would just culp it
[00:07:01] He would just take a little bit from this take a little bit from that take a little bit from whatever
[00:07:06] So Adam Durich had never actually performed the song that way, you know God
[00:07:12] So I had actually never heard that I'm just going off of what Anthony said. I didn't I did research it myself
[00:07:18] I'm curious how how accurate that is because I could see that on some songs, but not all the songs some of the songs have a pretty
[00:07:26] structured storytelling to them it feels like but
[00:07:29] You know in 2022 here's a little factoid I have found
[00:07:34] American songwriter magazine ranked this the fourth best
[00:07:38] Counting crows song do you know what the other three songs they put higher than it were fourth best counting crows song?
[00:07:44] What would they have put higher? Um, you know, I
[00:07:47] Don't know how they're judging the songs, but man
[00:07:49] I'll I'll give you a hint
[00:07:52] This is the only hint I'll give you all three songs are on three different albums or all tracks on the first three
[00:07:58] Counting crows. Okay. Well, I think one of those three has to be geez
[00:08:04] Why can't I think of the name of the song wait in for you?
[00:08:08] No, really
[00:08:10] What what's that?
[00:08:11] Angels of the Silences that's one of the best that's one that that is not the song they picked from recovering satellites
[00:08:18] They picked along December which they put as their number one. I don't know about all that
[00:08:23] I mean, I like along December but number one. Oh, no
[00:08:27] What so that remains a track from this desert life and a track off August and everything so oh
[00:08:33] Another off August and everything after oh man. Yeah, I mean
[00:08:38] It depends are they just going all singles or they go in some no, this is definitively not a single
[00:08:45] If I was making this list I would go for reigning in Baltimore, but I think they probably chose and it begins
[00:08:53] Neither of those home a haul. Oh, I like Omaha. I like Omaha, but I I mean, you know me
[00:08:59] I'm I am mr. Murder
[00:09:02] Murder one
[00:09:04] That's my number one kind of crow song and then what song do you think came off of this desert life?
[00:09:10] Oh, this doesn't the number three spot
[00:09:12] All was the number two best song according to them. You know, there's a song on this desert life. I really love I
[00:09:19] Don't know what it's called, but it's this up top my head out. No, it's called. It's a song that goes
[00:09:28] You know that one I vaguely know that one
[00:09:31] Oh
[00:09:33] Yeah, that's not the one they went with Mrs. Potter's lullaby the like seven and a half minute one
[00:09:40] That might be hey
[00:09:42] This is Potter. Don't cry. Hey
[00:09:46] Potter that's a good song. It's a really good
[00:09:51] Because I thought like hanging around was okay. Yeah, and then someone played me Mrs. Potter's lullaby
[00:09:56] I'm like, okay this song this song fucking kicks ass. This is a great song
[00:10:00] Listen to that album if you haven't it is great. Hey one more thing I wanted to talk about with
[00:10:05] Mr. Jones is I never really knew I just attributed my own meaning to this song or whatever
[00:10:10] Did you ever know the story behind the song? I was just gonna ask you if you knew who the mr.
[00:10:16] Jones was in reference to because I did not know this
[00:10:19] Yeah, so it's it's in reference to
[00:10:22] Basist Marty Jones of the Himalayans, which is the band that Adam Duritz was in from 1989 to 1991
[00:10:30] The song is about struggling musicians them and on VH1 storytellers Adam Duritz said it's a real
[00:10:37] It's really a song about my friend Marty and I we went out one night to watch his dad play
[00:10:41] He was a flamenco guitar player who lived in Spain
[00:10:44] And he was in San Francisco in the mission playing with his old flamenco troop and after the gig
[00:10:49] We all went to this bar called the New Amsterdam in San Francisco on Columbus
[00:10:55] Then he said they were drunk at the bar after watching
[00:10:59] Marty Jones dad play and they saw Kenny Dale Johnson the longtime drummer for Chris Isaac
[00:11:07] Sitting with three women and then Adam said it just seemed like you know, we couldn't even manage to talk to girls
[00:11:14] We were just thinking if we were rock stars, it'd be easier. I went home and wrote the song
[00:11:19] It's a good song. I love that story. Yeah, I mean it's exactly like he's
[00:11:25] He's citing everything he did that night like he captured one night of
[00:11:30] Going and seeing flamenco music his friends dad. He's drinking with his friend
[00:11:35] They're fantasizing about what it must be like to be rock stars. He turns
[00:11:40] Anthony's that's why I question Anthony's assessment that he just riffed this out in the booth because this feels like a very
[00:11:48] Structured out written story that he's telling us now
[00:11:51] Maybe the other songs maybe Anna begins and and you know those songs were more rift out
[00:11:57] But there's no world where I believe that he just walked in a booth and
[00:12:01] Accidentally in three three or four takes just told a very detailed story of a night that happened to him on top of the dome
[00:12:10] That's true. Probably not this song because this does have a great story, man
[00:12:15] I love the storytelling in this song
[00:12:17] I love the emotion in this song such a feel-good song when this one comes on fun to sing along to
[00:12:27] So much of that riffing is
[00:12:30] Just adds to the catchiness and fun of this song
[00:12:34] It's it's a lot looser we're gonna talk about basket case in a minute here
[00:12:37] It's a lot looser of a song it feels like I mean at least at least vocally
[00:12:41] You know what actually until you did that la la la la la I never connected this before
[00:12:47] But as much as you talk about how he wants to be Bob Dylan
[00:12:50] This song doesn't feel like a Bob Dylan song. It actually feels to me like a Van Morrison song
[00:12:55] This feels like an early like a moon dance era
[00:12:59] Van Morrison song with just how loose and free-flowing it is
[00:13:04] Yeah, let's talk about the other song the song that that you're assuming won this as you said you think mr
[00:13:11] They were the favorite green day basket case was definitely the favorite so I
[00:13:17] Looked into something very different here because like in my mind
[00:13:21] I was like alright everybody knows Green Day, and if they know Green Day, they definitely know basket case
[00:13:26] It was the second single off of dookie. It spent four weeks as the number one alternative song
[00:13:33] I
[00:13:34] Want to talk about all the awards and accolades that came upon this song for a second so
[00:13:41] It was nominated for best rock vocal performance at the Grammys in 1995
[00:13:47] And it lost
[00:13:49] Here's the songs that it lost with and what song won it
[00:13:55] So also nominated counting crows round here. Oh
[00:13:59] Nirvana's all apologies
[00:14:02] Okay, and Pearl Jam's daughter
[00:14:04] Are you all lost?
[00:14:06] Because the award went to Aerosmith for crazy
[00:14:11] and
[00:14:12] additional fact about Aerosmith they are the
[00:14:15] Second they're the band with the second most wins in the category of rock vocals
[00:14:21] Second only to you two Aerosmith has four wins in that category you two has seven
[00:14:26] wins in that category
[00:14:28] okay
[00:14:30] Rolling Stone in 2021 named it the hundred and fiftieth greatest song of all time
[00:14:35] Yeah, and their updated version of the 500 greatest songs of all time as of March of this year as of basically right now
[00:14:42] It is still their most stream song on Spotify with over a billion streams
[00:14:47] They may have made like $15 on this song by that algorithm a billion
[00:14:53] Streams is a lot of streams. I mean even
[00:14:57] Okay, we Spotify does not pay artists enough
[00:15:01] We all know that buddy
[00:15:02] But if you have a billion streams of something you are making I wonder how much money that equates to I it has to be in the
[00:15:08] Millions I would think I could be way off on that
[00:15:12] I don't know. I hope I hope they made some millions from having a billion streams, but yeah
[00:15:18] I I was actually surprised that
[00:15:21] This is still their most streamed song
[00:15:24] I mean it's been around a lot longer than the American idiot songs
[00:15:27] But I just for some reason thought those songs like boulevard of broken dreams or or American idiot or whatever
[00:15:34] I just thought those were I don't know just hit more people or something
[00:15:37] I think that this is the song that keeps if we're thinking about Spotify and how Spotify connects with things like
[00:15:44] Tiktok and all of that. This is a this is a song that I can see people
[00:15:50] Finding and like speeding up or doing something weird with on tiktok more than those other songs
[00:15:55] I also think it's a more relatable song than American idiot and and wake me up when September ends and
[00:16:02] boulevard of broken dreams
[00:16:03] Because the song is actually just about Billy Joe's struggles with anxiety
[00:16:07] And how he felt like he was going crazy before he was officially diagnosed with having a panic disorder
[00:16:12] In his book welcome to my panic. He actually revealed that the song was written while he was on speed, right?
[00:16:20] You know, I think I think it was just this week. I was talking about how I've never I've never done speed
[00:16:25] I don't know what speed feels like our meth a method speed the same thing
[00:16:30] I think so I think they might be listen the only speed
[00:16:32] I've ever done start Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock Wow
[00:16:35] It was great
[00:16:37] It's a really good time. How about you too? Did you do speed? No, no, I did not touch that
[00:16:42] I did not touch cruise control
[00:16:44] It was nominated for nine VMAs and lost in every single
[00:16:51] So I want to run down what beat it
[00:16:54] So they lost the video of the year award the best group video award and the viewer's choice award
[00:17:01] To TLC's waterfalls. Oh, come on. They gotta at least give them at least give them one of them
[00:17:07] I mean waterfalls was the video that good the video was it?
[00:17:11] It was more this CGI one where they're in the water
[00:17:15] Do you think that's that good? I think in 1994 it was like whoa. What is this are we watching the abyss?
[00:17:21] What's this video? I
[00:17:24] Mean the song it's a good song that like tells a story and it's easy to understand
[00:17:28] But the video I think the Green Day video is way better Chris
[00:17:31] This one's gonna upset you even more they lost the they shouldn't even been in this category honestly
[00:17:36] But they lost the best metal slash hard rock video
[00:17:40] To white zombies more human than human that's stupid
[00:17:45] They lost best cinematography to the Rolling Stones love is strong. Oh, man
[00:17:52] Do you remember that video? Is that the one where they're gigantic? Yes?
[00:17:55] Yeah, I hate that video so much. Oh it sucks and that song sucks
[00:17:58] That's the song that goes your love is strong and you're so weak you make me hard
[00:18:06] Like he says you make me hard in it. It's it's fucking gross song
[00:18:10] Well, here's the ones that make sense
[00:18:13] They also lost best alternative video best editing
[00:18:17] Breakthrough video and best direction of a music video to Weezer's buddy Holly like yeah for sure
[00:18:23] That makes sense to me. That's the most sensible
[00:18:27] collection of losses because that was a
[00:18:30] Revolutionary video at the time it came out. I mean yeah, the Weezer videos an all-timer for sure
[00:18:36] But the Green Day video is pretty good. It's pretty striking. It's very much color
[00:18:41] They did a great use of I say this with this video and the first video long view
[00:18:47] the colors pop in both of those videos in a very
[00:18:52] Unique way and in very different ways like long views very grainy but still pops whereas like this one's like
[00:18:59] pristine now they just have it out on HD and
[00:19:02] Here's a couple people who who's who have covered basket case
[00:19:06] Avril Lavigne has released a promotional cover of it for one of her tours
[00:19:12] Weird Al covered it in the alternative polka
[00:19:14] Yeah, and the one that was the most confusing to me
[00:19:18] Bastille the the band that the song Pompeii
[00:19:21] Covered this for the Amazon Prime tick TV series
[00:19:26] Okay
[00:19:29] There's a weird combination of where it's there
[00:19:31] But that was my research for basket case because I thought let's talk about the legacy
[00:19:35] There's not too much to dive into with the songwriting of this one
[00:19:39] It's pretty similarly to how mr. Jones kind of just tells a story that's very
[00:19:44] Same with basket case. There's not a lot to interpret here
[00:19:47] Yeah, what he's saying in the words. He's telling a tale. Yeah, he's telling a tale that is truthful
[00:19:53] It's not just some cool stuff that sounds cool. It's like what he was going through and I think that's that's pretty cool
[00:20:00] It's a little bit tighter of a song, you know
[00:20:03] It's not not as loose on the lyrical side
[00:20:07] It's very much what the kids would call a bop
[00:20:10] I would say let me ask you this question because I know this from the brief period of time that I drummed and
[00:20:16] The little bit that I know playing guitar as much as I love mr. Jones
[00:20:22] This has to be a much more fun song to play instrumentally
[00:20:27] Like especially the drums
[00:20:29] I just think that Trey cool has so many fun fills
[00:20:32] Going on on this like the guitar I could see being dull, but even the bass lines Mike
[00:20:36] Mike and Green Day is underrated bass player
[00:20:40] For some of the bass lines he sneaks into these songs for the drums and bass especially
[00:20:45] Basket case is way more of an aerobic exercise. So yes
[00:20:48] I would I would probably agree that you want if you want to get your cardio in the playing basket case is the more
[00:20:56] Fun in that way, but I don't know man. Mr. Jones could be fun, too
[00:21:00] I think both of these songs if I were in a 90s cover band
[00:21:04] I'd have fun playing both of these
[00:21:06] Of course
[00:21:07] Well, I think you're gonna get more people sing along when you play mr. Jones and that I feel like it's half the fun of it
[00:21:12] If you're if you're in a bar cover band you want that room either dancing or singing right?
[00:21:17] So are we ready to reveal the final results?
[00:21:22] Yeah, I'm ready
[00:21:25] Okay, so 110 votes came in for this final round. I've officially cancelled my
[00:21:32] my
[00:21:34] Survey monkey like advanced
[00:21:36] Thing so I'm not getting charged for that anymore
[00:21:39] with 61 percent of the vote
[00:21:43] Green day basket case. Yeah, I did yeah, I really was hope I was hoping for an underdog story
[00:21:48] I want it
[00:21:49] I wanted the counting crows to pull this out out of nowhere to fight the odds
[00:21:55] 61% they kind of crushed I know I want I there was a point though when we put this out on Friday
[00:22:02] And I would check every day just to see
[00:22:05] Friday
[00:22:06] Saturday and even Sunday
[00:22:09] It was like 51 49
[00:22:12] It was that Monday Tuesday push the Green Day fans came out and uh in a big way, but you know hey
[00:22:21] like he said
[00:22:23] Genuinely two of the best songs from the 90s
[00:22:26] I'm excited for next March when we get to do the 95 songs
[00:22:30] I think we'll be able to now that we know that this is a thing that we want to do again. We can really
[00:22:36] Make the the brackets more sensible of like this is the pop category. This is the hip hop category
[00:22:42] This is the rock category really really make it fun
[00:22:45] Here's what I would change we got a better seeded out too because I just randomized it. That's that's the thing man
[00:22:50] I don't think we have to next year divide it by like types of music
[00:22:54] but I just think you have two sides and
[00:22:57] You and I have to figure out
[00:22:59] What our rank like our seedings are so that way you have the the one playing against the
[00:23:07] 16 or the one against the eight or whatever yeah start in wherever so
[00:23:12] It just works out that way. You don't end up with a buddy. Holly versus
[00:23:17] Bastic case right out the gate. Yeah Chris. I think we're gonna be back with another bonus episode in about two weeks
[00:23:24] Because okay, I'm not sure if you've been paying attention
[00:23:27] April 19th T. Swift's new album comes out and I think you and I
[00:23:32] Should give that thing a listen and talk about it. Oh wow
[00:23:36] I don't think I've ever listened to a full Taylor Swift album before. I'm not a hater
[00:23:40] I'm all I'm more of a like I don't care her. Yeah
[00:23:45] You're gonna care in two weeks when we talk about that is one of our bonus episodes. Wow. It's coming out already
[00:23:51] Yeah, I saw that post it the other day and I thought I'll text Chris this and then I thought I'll just tell him live on the air
[00:23:56] All right
[00:23:59] But since we're not gonna be doing one of these bonus episodes for two weeks
[00:24:02] You got anything exciting you need to tell the audience about
[00:24:06] beforehand punchline would be back on the road in June of
[00:24:11] 2024 with the spill canvas we are playing our album action for its 20 year anniversary in full at those shows
[00:24:18] So we are in Minneapolis
[00:24:21] Chicago
[00:24:22] Detroit and Columbus
[00:24:25] Both the Detroit and Columbus shows the Detroit show is originally at the shelter that sold out
[00:24:31] So it got moved up to a bigger venue now at St. Andrews and same thing with Columbus
[00:24:36] It was at a smaller venue it sold out
[00:24:38] It got moved to a bigger venue called Scully's and Columbus so come on out tickets are on sale nice and
[00:24:44] This will be closed. Well, yeah, I'll say it now
[00:24:48] Like I said Taylor Swift album comes out in the 19th you might have a review from us that same day
