[00:00:00] Hey everybody, Chris Fafalius here. If you enjoy One Hit Thunder, which I'm assuming you do considering you're listening to it right now,
[00:00:06] I want to tell you about another great music podcast on the Evergreen Podcast Network.
[00:00:10] It's called Riffs on Riffs. On this season of Riffs on Riffs, host Toby Braswell and Joe Watson are breaking down one
[00:00:18] iconic pop song each week. Everything from Taylor Swift's Cruel Summer to Journey's Don't Stop Believin' to Naughty by Nature's OPP.
[00:00:26] Each week, they crack open the song, trace its history,
[00:00:30] decode those cryptic lyrics, and unearth the hidden gems in its musical DNA.
[00:00:34] Not only do they dive into the song's history, lyrics, and impact,
[00:00:38] they also go down some fun and oftentimes hilarious rabbit holes.
[00:00:41] So yeah, if you're a fan of One Hit Thunder, I think you'll also enjoy Riffs on Riffs.
[00:00:46] So go hit that subscribe button on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your pods.
[00:00:58] An endless night, ember hot and icy cold.
[00:01:04] The rage of the earth.
[00:01:06] We made this curse.
[00:01:08] Carved it in the blood on our backs.
[00:01:12] We did not see. We could not, but she did.
[00:01:16] And in the end...
[00:01:18] What will I become?
[00:01:19] Senua's Saga. Hellblade 2.
[00:01:21] Play it now with Game Pass.
[00:01:24] We took it all.
[00:01:26] We brought them to our land.
[00:01:30] An endless night, ember hot and icy cold.
[00:01:34] The rage of the earth.
[00:01:36] We made this curse.
[00:01:40] Carved it in the blood on our backs.
[00:01:42] We did not see.
[00:01:44] We could not, but she did.
[00:01:46] And in the end...
[00:01:48] What will I become?
[00:01:50] Senua's Saga. Hellblade 2.
[00:01:52] Play it now with Game Pass.
[00:01:54] One hit is all you need to make the money guaranteed.
[00:02:00] And you can live off royalties forever.
[00:02:06] And it makes me wonder, is it just a wonder?
[00:02:12] Or is it one hit thunder?
[00:02:16] So Matt, this was my idea. I hit you up.
[00:02:20] I'm an Apple Music user. I'm not a Spotify guy. I use Apple Music.
[00:02:24] And I've been seeing this thing pop up of the Apple Music 100 best albums.
[00:02:30] And you know I'm a sucker for a list.
[00:02:32] And I like to make my own lists.
[00:02:34] So I thought it would be fun if you and I went through this.
[00:02:37] And I know, I've already looked through the whole list.
[00:02:39] But I believe you got the number one spoiled.
[00:02:43] But the rest of it, you don't know, right?
[00:02:46] Mostly a mystery to me, yeah.
[00:02:48] So I think you and I are going to go through all 100 of these.
[00:02:52] Now, I don't think we're going to release the full audio of us discussing 100 albums.
[00:02:58] But we'll see how good our commentary is for 100 albums in a row.
[00:03:02] But we're starting here at 100 with Robin Body Talk.
[00:03:06] Which I don't know this album.
[00:03:08] Is this the one that has that like dancing?
[00:03:12] I can't remember what the name of the song is.
[00:03:14] Dancing on My Own and Call Your Girlfriend are both on this album.
[00:03:17] It's from 2010.
[00:03:19] Those songs are good.
[00:03:21] I don't know the whole album.
[00:03:22] I wouldn't have put it on my top 100.
[00:03:24] We should decide together on a collaborative top 100, would this album be on it?
[00:03:31] And my vote would be no on this one.
[00:03:33] My vote will also be no because like I said, I know a song on it.
[00:03:37] Let's move on.
[00:03:38] Tapping across.
[00:03:40] Oh, is this going to be an issue now?
[00:03:44] Oh wait, I'm supposed to go this way.
[00:03:46] Hotel California, The Eagles.
[00:03:49] Not the biggest Eagles fan.
[00:03:51] Like the song Hotel California.
[00:03:53] But I'm going to if we're if that's how we're doing this,
[00:03:55] I want to say that this is a no from me, dog.
[00:03:58] I would be glad if I never heard the song Hotel California for the rest of my life.
[00:04:03] So Eagles Hotel California album also would not be on my top 100.
[00:04:08] We can go right past this one.
[00:04:10] They're 0 for 2 so far as far as we're concerned.
[00:04:13] Okay.
[00:04:14] Astroworld, Travis Scott.
[00:04:16] Also not a Travis Scott guy.
[00:04:18] Are we so is the argument I think I saw someone post explaining this a little bit
[00:04:23] that this is supposed to be culturally significant albums,
[00:04:27] not what their staff's favorite albums were,
[00:04:30] but the ones that they thought had the biggest cultural impact.
[00:04:33] And I mean, I guess, you know, I could see Travis Scott in that,
[00:04:38] but I also am glad that it's at the very bottom of the list
[00:04:40] because I don't think that he I would say the Hotel California Eagles album
[00:04:46] has more cultural significance than Astroworld.
[00:04:49] Well, this is the album with sicko mode on it.
[00:04:52] If you know one Travis Scott song, you probably know that.
[00:04:55] But I just personally do not get Travis Scott.
[00:04:59] It is just not my thing.
[00:05:00] There's no there's no list of 500 albums that this album would even sniff.
[00:05:06] So I would say no to this one.
[00:05:08] And if I'm seeing this preview correctly, way too low here.
[00:05:12] We have the Rage Against the Machine self-titled.
[00:05:15] I mean, I'm glad it's above Travis Scott and Eagles,
[00:05:19] but 97 seems this is like a top 50 record to me.
[00:05:24] Yeah, I mean, the debut album from Rage Against the Machine
[00:05:27] is what we're talking about.
[00:05:29] I'm glad it made the list.
[00:05:30] I mean, you could make an argument for Evil Empire, too.
[00:05:32] I love that album, but this is kind of the album that started it all.
[00:05:35] This would definitely be on my list.
[00:05:37] I think I'd agree with you, Matt.
[00:05:38] This is probably a top 50 album.
[00:05:40] It's awesome.
[00:05:41] So good job to the Apple Music staff and artists that contributed to this list
[00:05:47] and including this at all.
[00:05:48] So yes, so we got one.
[00:05:50] We agree with one so far.
[00:05:53] All right.
[00:05:54] We've got Lorde, Pure Heroin.
[00:05:56] At number 96.
[00:05:58] At 96.
[00:05:59] I actually really like this album.
[00:06:00] I think that Lorde's debut is a very solid release.
[00:06:05] I think 96 is about a good spot, though.
[00:06:07] I think that it's definitely, if it's going to be on a list like this,
[00:06:09] it's definitely in that 90 to 100 range.
[00:06:12] I really like Royals.
[00:06:14] I really like that song Team that are both from this album.
[00:06:18] She did make a big impact at the time.
[00:06:20] I didn't celebrate the entire album.
[00:06:24] I only know the couple singles.
[00:06:26] I'm fine with it being on here.
[00:06:28] I'm going to assume that the people that put it on here
[00:06:30] listened to it a good bit more than I did.
[00:06:32] So I'm okay with this one.
[00:06:34] All right.
[00:06:35] 95, we have Usher Confessions.
[00:06:38] If you listen to my review of the Usher halftime show,
[00:06:44] it's very clear that I'm not a very strong Usher fan.
[00:06:47] But I mean, for the longevity of his career alone,
[00:06:51] there should be some Usher represented on here.
[00:06:54] And Confessions definitely was – I mean, that album was massive.
[00:07:00] I feel like we've done a ton of one-hit thunder episodes
[00:07:04] where we're talking about what the billboard charts were.
[00:07:08] And they're just like for that 2009 to 2011 range
[00:07:14] was just song after song from this album.
[00:07:17] Yeah, I mean, this is the album with Yeah, Confessions Part II, Burn, Caught Up.
[00:07:22] This is a gigantic album.
[00:07:25] Kind of lukewarm on it, but I think it probably does belong here.
[00:07:30] I'm cool with this one.
[00:07:32] If you're going to put an Usher album on, this is the one.
[00:07:36] This is the one.
[00:07:37] Okay, so here's the first one where I've never heard of this.
[00:07:39] Yes, right.
[00:07:40] Untrue Burial at 94.
[00:07:42] Yeah.
[00:07:43] Not for nothing.
[00:07:44] Like, look, I get it.
[00:07:46] You and I are both either in our 40s or nearing our 40s,
[00:07:50] and maybe our fingers aren't fully on the pulse.
[00:07:53] But we're also two guys who host two different music podcasts.
[00:07:57] And for a list of 100 significant albums,
[00:08:01] one of us should be aware of who the band is.
[00:08:04] This is complete bullshit.
[00:08:05] It's a British electronic music producer.
[00:08:07] I think it might be like a dubstep-ish album.
[00:08:11] Let's not waste any more breath talking about this.
[00:08:14] This is dumb.
[00:08:15] Okay, so another one I actually don't know at 93,
[00:08:19] A Seat at the Table, Solage?
[00:08:21] Solange!
[00:08:22] Beyonce's sister.
[00:08:23] You don't know this album?
[00:08:24] I don't.
[00:08:25] This is really good music.
[00:08:28] Okay.
[00:08:29] I mean, I can't cite particular songs from it,
[00:08:31] but I've listened, put this album on before because people raved about it,
[00:08:35] and it is good, as you can imagine.
[00:08:38] It's just in the Knowles genes to make good music, I think.
[00:08:43] So, yeah, I'm cool with this one.
[00:08:45] Top 100 might be a little bit of a stretch, but it's not outrageous.
[00:08:51] All right.
[00:08:52] We've got Tyler, the Creator, Flower Boy.
[00:08:55] I've always been torn on how I feel about Tyler,
[00:08:58] but I mean he definitely – it is undeniable that him and the entire group
[00:09:05] of rappers that he works with have left a major influence in modern hip hop.
[00:09:13] So I definitely think that someone should be represented.
[00:09:16] I'm sure anybody who's listening or watching can let us know
[00:09:19] if this Flower Boy album is the one that should represent it.
[00:09:23] I know this album.
[00:09:24] Okay.
[00:09:25] At 92, it wouldn't be in my top 100.
[00:09:28] I think it's pretty good for Tyler, the Creator.
[00:09:31] But, yeah, he's not one of my favorites, but he's obviously creative and good.
[00:09:37] So I'm fine with this here.
[00:09:41] Okay.
[00:09:42] Let's see, 91, we've got George Michael, Listen Without Prejudice, Volume 1.
[00:09:48] Chris, do you know which songs are on this one per chance?
[00:09:50] Dude, yeah, Freedom 90 is on this.
[00:09:53] I just can't believe if you're going to put a George Michael album on your top 100,
[00:09:58] how is it not Faith?
[00:10:00] So is this the only George Michael album that makes the list?
[00:10:04] Spoiler alert, yes.
[00:10:05] But Faith has Faith, Father Figure, One More Try, Monkey, I Want Your Sex.
[00:10:11] I think this is – right artist, wrong album.
[00:10:16] Just a mistake.
[00:10:18] I think that's a fair assessment.
[00:10:20] I was like, I'm not even familiar with this album title.
[00:10:24] Okay, ACDC, Back in Black.
[00:10:26] Now we're talking about some classic rock, which, I mean,
[00:10:29] this is the first classic rock since The Eagles on the list sitting at 90.
[00:10:33] I mean, this is a damn good album.
[00:10:35] Like whether you like ACDC or not, this has most of the songs you know by ACDC.
[00:10:42] It's got obviously the title track.
[00:10:44] It's got Shooky All Night Long.
[00:10:46] It's got Hell's Bells.
[00:10:47] Like it's kind of stacked with the biggest hits in their career.
[00:10:51] Yeah, I mean, I'm not going to put this on anytime soon,
[00:10:54] but it kind of seems low for what an influential huge album this is.
[00:10:59] This is another one like Rage where this should be in the top 50, I think.
[00:11:02] Maybe not too high.
[00:11:04] I don't think too high in the top 50,
[00:11:06] but absolutely like in that 49-50 range for just influence alone.
[00:11:12] Now I'm with you.
[00:11:13] Like I'm not the biggest ACDC fan.
[00:11:15] I like ACDC enough, and this is probably the album I would put on
[00:11:19] if I was going to listen to ACDC, but yeah, 90's real low for this.
[00:11:25] What do we got at 89?
[00:11:27] Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster Deluxe Edition.
[00:11:30] And I think the deluxe edition part is important
[00:11:32] because I think you get tracks like Paparazzi and Telephone
[00:11:35] when you get the deluxe version.
[00:11:38] I mean, I didn't like Lady Gaga when she first came out.
[00:11:42] Now I really like what she was doing back then,
[00:11:45] and the songs that came from The Fame Monster
[00:11:49] were just like unavoidable party jams
[00:11:53] for the entirety of my college experience.
[00:11:56] I'm indifferent to Lady Gaga.
[00:11:57] She's fine.
[00:11:58] If someone wants to put a Lady Gaga album on here,
[00:12:00] I guess this is the one.
[00:12:02] I'm kind of indifferent.
[00:12:03] Wouldn't be on my top 100, I'll tell you that.
[00:12:05] I mean, again, even from an influential stance,
[00:12:08] I think that she really changed the way pop music was done
[00:12:12] shortly after this album because it was like
[00:12:15] she made pop music okay to be weird, finally.
[00:12:19] And then we got more of the underground artists
[00:12:21] that you and I both like.
[00:12:23] Nina Simone, I Put a Spell on You.
[00:12:25] I mean, Nina Simone definitely deserves to be on a list like this.
[00:12:29] I think we've both talked about how like
[00:12:33] we're not the biggest jazz people,
[00:12:35] but I love Nina Simone's jazz music.
[00:12:39] I love listening to how she sings songs
[00:12:42] like her version of I Put a Spell on You.
[00:12:44] There's a couple other really good ones.
[00:12:46] Preacher Man, she does a really good version of.
[00:12:49] So I'm okay with this being on here,
[00:12:51] even though it's not a record that I listen to regularly.
[00:12:55] 88's fine with me.
[00:12:57] It wouldn't be on my list just because it's kind of before my time
[00:13:00] and I'm not familiar with it, but I'm assuming it's really great.
[00:13:04] Yeah.
[00:13:05] 87 we have Massive Attack, Blue Lines.
[00:13:08] Never got into Massive Attack,
[00:13:10] but I know how influential and important this album is
[00:13:13] to like a very specific genre of music.
[00:13:16] So absolutely, this should be on a top 100 list.
[00:13:20] Wow.
[00:13:21] Just for that alone.
[00:13:22] I don't know anything about this band
[00:13:24] and they wouldn't even sniff a top 500 for me.
[00:13:27] So we can keep going.
[00:13:29] All right.
[00:13:30] Yeah, no, for the whole like,
[00:13:33] what the hell is that genre of music that I'm thinking of?
[00:13:36] Like, I'm blanking, but like stuff like Portishead.
[00:13:41] No, Massive Attack.
[00:13:43] Massive Attack's like Portishead.
[00:13:44] Who am I thinking of?
[00:13:46] I have no clue.
[00:13:47] This was like of that, like almost indie lo-fi type sound.
[00:13:54] Okay.
[00:13:55] Mary J. Blige, My Life.
[00:13:58] I'm assuming Family.
[00:13:59] No, I don't think this is the one with Family Affair.
[00:14:01] What is on this Mary J. Blige album?
[00:14:03] This being at number 86,
[00:14:05] I would have gone with the album What's the 411.
[00:14:08] That's the album with real love on it,
[00:14:11] which is the ultimate Mary J. Blige jam.
[00:14:14] I don't know this album.
[00:14:16] So obviously it wouldn't be on my list,
[00:14:19] but she's obviously amazing.
[00:14:21] I just, when I look at the track list of this album,
[00:14:24] like I don't know this album.
[00:14:26] All right.
[00:14:27] Well then.
[00:14:28] Yeah.
[00:14:29] 85, I actually love this album.
[00:14:31] It would not be in my top 100,
[00:14:32] but this is Kacey Musgraves with Golden Hour.
[00:14:36] This is kind of that more modern country
[00:14:39] in the exact same vein as a Maren Morris,
[00:14:42] like that country star going pop.
[00:14:44] The song, I think it was the lead sing on this was Butterflies.
[00:14:47] Great, great song.
[00:14:50] Definitely recommend checking out this album
[00:14:52] if you're not familiar with it,
[00:14:53] but 85 on a 100 most influential albums list
[00:14:57] seems outrageous.
[00:14:58] I don't think it's most influential.
[00:14:59] You keep saying, they didn't say that.
[00:15:01] Or best, or best.
[00:15:02] They're saying best.
[00:15:03] They're saying best.
[00:15:04] Still should not be on this list is what I'm saying.
[00:15:07] I'm feeling like we're getting to that point
[00:15:09] where there's a lot of albums
[00:15:10] that I'm thinking we're not going to see on this list.
[00:15:12] Yeah, and let's keep something in mind Matt here.
[00:15:14] They're saying best.
[00:15:16] They're not saying like you were talking about like,
[00:15:18] oh, Travis Scott, he was influential to whatever.
[00:15:21] But they're saying best.
[00:15:23] So I'm not familiar with this album
[00:15:25] to be able to call it best.
[00:15:26] I feel like I'm saying that a lot,
[00:15:27] but I do know there are a lot coming up
[00:15:29] that I am familiar with.
[00:15:31] And I can see the sneak preview of the next one here.
[00:15:34] 84, Doggy Style, Snoop Dogg.
[00:15:36] I mean, obviously.
[00:15:37] This, you know, we did actually coming out soon.
[00:15:41] Here's a little spoiler for everybody.
[00:15:42] Coming out soon as a G Funk episode with Warren G.
[00:15:46] And definitely Warren G was in my eyes,
[00:15:49] the guy who created the sound of G Funk.
[00:15:52] But Snoop Dogg was the guy who perfected that sound.
[00:15:55] And he did so with this album specifically.
[00:15:58] This would be on my top 100.
[00:16:01] You know what?
[00:16:02] This feels low.
[00:16:03] I feel like this feels really low to me.
[00:16:05] Yeah, I would probably, on my list it would.
[00:16:07] You know what?
[00:16:08] If I was making a list,
[00:16:10] this probably wouldn't be on it,
[00:16:11] but I do think it should be on it.
[00:16:14] If that makes any sense.
[00:16:15] I mean, this album has come up for me
[00:16:18] when I'm trying to do a list of like 10 greatest.
[00:16:21] Like, again, I'm leaning on the word influential,
[00:16:24] but like if I was to do a list
[00:16:26] of like the 10 most influential rap albums of all time,
[00:16:29] this would be on that list for sure.
[00:16:31] Okay.
[00:16:32] All right, Patti Smith, Horses.
[00:16:35] Does this have Because the Night on it?
[00:16:39] I don't know.
[00:16:40] All I know is that people love this
[00:16:43] and I am not familiar with it.
[00:16:45] A little before my time,
[00:16:47] and I know it's never too late to check something out.
[00:16:49] I would say TBD, to be determined if it's on my list.
[00:16:54] And I feel like lately,
[00:16:56] doesn't Taylor Swift have a new song where she like
[00:16:59] says I'm Patti Smith and you're so-and-so or whatever?
[00:17:03] I'm sure she does.
[00:17:04] Yeah.
[00:17:05] Because I think we talked about it
[00:17:06] in our Taylor Swift album review.
[00:17:07] But hey, I like the songs that I've heard by Patti Smith.
[00:17:11] I'm more of a Patti Smythe fan myself.
[00:17:13] You like her work with Scandal?
[00:17:16] Yes, yeah, Warrior.
[00:17:18] Yeah, all right.
[00:17:19] Goodbye to You.
[00:17:20] 82, 50 Cent, Get Rich or Die Trying.
[00:17:25] Never liked this album.
[00:17:27] I bought this album just because I was trying
[00:17:30] to buy all of the like Rolling Stone 100 greatest albums
[00:17:34] of all time albums at one point.
[00:17:36] But I remember how massive and beloved this album is.
[00:17:40] But for the most part, it's like In the Club is great.
[00:17:44] I like Wangsta.
[00:17:45] I like 21 Questions.
[00:17:47] I like High all the time.
[00:17:49] But I mean, this is a,
[00:17:51] I think this album has like something like 24 tracks on it
[00:17:55] and I like three or four of them.
[00:17:57] Yeah.
[00:17:58] It's a lot.
[00:17:59] I understand why it would be on a list.
[00:18:02] It's the songs are enduring.
[00:18:05] It wouldn't be anywhere near my list.
[00:18:07] Sorry, 50 Cent.
[00:18:08] So let's see at 81, Neil Young, After the Gold Rush.
[00:18:13] This is a good ass album.
[00:18:14] I think the opening track on this is Heart of Gold,
[00:18:17] which is just one of the best.
[00:18:19] I think it might not be the opening track,
[00:18:21] but I'm pretty sure Heart of Gold is on After the Gold Rush.
[00:18:24] I could be completely wrong.
[00:18:26] I think you might be wrong about that, Matt.
[00:18:28] But either way, I think that this album is an absolute banger.
[00:18:35] And like I was just about to say that I feel like
[00:18:38] we've talked about a lot more new than older albums so far on this.
[00:18:43] So I'm glad to see something from like that 60s, 70s scene,
[00:18:47] like represent it.
[00:18:49] What is, are you looking it up right now?
[00:18:51] What's on After the Gold Rush?
[00:18:52] Tell me why After the Gold Rush,
[00:18:55] I mean, there's some good songs though.
[00:19:09] Tell me why is one of my favorite Neil Young songs.
[00:19:11] I love, I really liked this album quite a bit.
[00:19:15] But again, I don't know if it would be on my top 100 albums list.
[00:19:19] Neil Young is not on my top 100.
[00:19:21] Cool guy.
[00:19:22] I think the guy is cool.
[00:19:23] The music, not so much.
[00:19:25] All right.
[00:19:27] Let's see.
[00:19:28] Eminem, Marshall Mathers LP.
[00:19:30] Not my favorite Eminem record,
[00:19:32] but I know it's the most important Eminem record.
[00:19:36] And I know it's a lot of other people's favorite Eminem release.
[00:19:39] I mean, this album was huge.
[00:19:45] Like number 80, I guess I'm okay with this.
[00:19:49] This is Stan, real slim, shady.
[00:19:52] This is what, is this like the 90s?
[00:19:54] What I Say I Am is on here too.
[00:19:56] And then on the deeper cuts you get songs like Kill You,
[00:19:59] which was like pretty well liked under the influence.
[00:20:04] Amityville, which is probably one of my favorite Eminem deep tracks.
[00:20:07] Like there's not really a skippable song on this album as far as I'm concerned.
[00:20:13] I think this and the Slim Shady LP,
[00:20:15] the first two releases of his are pretty major record label releases of his,
[00:20:21] are pretty perfect in the grand scheme of that era of music.
[00:20:27] Wouldn't be on my top 100, I'll tell you that.
[00:20:29] This would be on my top 100.
[00:20:31] Wow. Okay.
[00:20:32] Although maybe I would put Slim Shady LP higher, but whatever.
[00:20:35] So Lana Del Rey, Norman fucking Rockwell,
[00:20:39] really have not gotten into Lana Del Rey as much as I should have.
[00:20:44] If you want to Matt.
[00:20:45] So I'm going to pass this to you.
[00:20:46] If you want to get into Lana Del Rey,
[00:20:48] you should listen to the album Born To Die.
[00:20:50] That album is awesome.
[00:20:52] And this is the album where she does the sublime cover of Due In Time.
[00:20:58] That's all I know.
[00:20:59] I've heard that cover.
[00:21:00] I mean, it's a pretty good cover that's on this,
[00:21:03] but I just think that Born To Die is a superior album.
[00:21:07] If I was going to,
[00:21:08] I would probably put Born To Die on my lower end of my top 100,
[00:21:13] but not this album.
[00:21:15] But okay.
[00:21:16] Okay.
[00:21:17] Right, right.
[00:21:18] Artist's wrong album.
[00:21:19] All right.
[00:21:20] Let's see.
[00:21:21] Here we go with Elton John.
[00:21:22] Goodbye,
[00:21:23] Yellow Brick Road.
[00:21:24] Okay.
[00:21:25] This would absolutely make it on my top 100.
[00:21:27] I definitely think this is Elton John's best record.
[00:21:29] There's no way you can't represent a list like this without something from
[00:21:33] Elton John.
[00:21:34] And this is definitely the one it should be.
[00:21:36] Yeah.
[00:21:37] I mean,
[00:21:38] this is Candle In The Wind,
[00:21:39] Benny and the Jets,
[00:21:40] Saturday Nights Are Right For Fighting,
[00:21:41] Goodbye,
[00:21:42] Yellow Brick Road,
[00:21:43] the title track of course.
[00:21:44] Yeah,
[00:21:45] this should be on a top 100.
[00:21:46] I agree with this one.
[00:21:47] Yeah,
[00:21:48] there's no problem with this.
[00:21:49] And actually I have no problem with the next one that I see here,
[00:21:51] Madonna Like A Prayer.
[00:21:52] Not,
[00:21:53] I mean,
[00:21:54] I think we've talked about this before.
[00:21:56] True Blue is technically the album from Madonna with the most number one
[00:22:00] hits.
[00:22:01] But I mean,
[00:22:02] just for the song Like A Prayer alone,
[00:22:05] which is just such a juggernaut of a song,
[00:22:07] but the rest of this record is really good.
[00:22:10] This is a really good Madonna album.
[00:22:12] Yeah.
[00:22:13] I love the lyric on it,
[00:22:14] Dear Jesty and Oh Father,
[00:22:15] which I love both of those songs.
[00:22:17] Of course,
[00:22:18] the title track.
[00:22:19] I would probably go with Like A Virgin or True Blue over this one if I,
[00:22:23] I'd have to really go.
[00:22:25] I would represent Madonna somewhere on my 100,
[00:22:28] but it would probably be earlier work,
[00:22:31] Madonna,
[00:22:32] but I'm okay with this.
[00:22:33] Yeah.
[00:22:34] I think if I,
[00:22:35] I think my list would probably have to have Madonna in this actually might
[00:22:37] be the one I went with.
[00:22:38] Bad Bunny.
[00:22:40] I don't even know how to pronounce this because I,
[00:22:42] I don't know this album at all.
[00:22:45] I'd be okay with just skipping right past this one,
[00:22:47] Matt.
[00:22:48] All right,
[00:22:49] let's just be safe and move on.
[00:22:51] Missy Elliott,
[00:22:52] Super Duper Fly.
[00:22:53] Missy has been on my list of like,
[00:22:56] I have loved every single I've ever heard from Missy Elliott and I've never
[00:23:00] dug deeper into her catalog.
[00:23:02] And I was thinking about that fairly recently that I want to listen to more
[00:23:07] Missy Elliott specifically starting with Super Duper Fly.
[00:23:09] Cause obviously that's got the rain on it,
[00:23:12] which is just such a,
[00:23:13] such a cool song.
[00:23:15] And like you said,
[00:23:17] this is a best list,
[00:23:18] but if we're again,
[00:23:19] if we're going to bring up the concept of influential kind of brought Timbaland
[00:23:23] to the entire music scene with this album and that the influence that this
[00:23:29] album had on bringing Timbaland into hip hop alone earns it a place on any
[00:23:35] type of greatest albums list,
[00:23:37] even without listening to it,
[00:23:39] just knowing that piece of history.
[00:23:41] But as good as the rain is,
[00:23:43] I have a feeling that the rest of the record is probably just as interesting
[00:23:48] and different and unique.
[00:23:50] I would check it out.
[00:23:51] Missy Elliott is my cousin Alicia's favorite artist of all time,
[00:23:55] I do believe.
[00:23:56] And I don't know that it would make my top 100.
[00:23:59] I do like some of her singles,
[00:24:01] but cool.
[00:24:02] I'm fine with it being on here.
[00:24:04] All right,
[00:24:05] 74.
[00:24:06] This is another one that I think is a little too low.
[00:24:08] And I think you agree with me,
[00:24:10] given that you had like 20 shirts for this band.
[00:24:13] Yep.
[00:24:14] Nine inch nails,
[00:24:15] the downward spiral.
[00:24:16] Yeah,
[00:24:17] this should be way higher.
[00:24:18] This was a,
[00:24:19] this is a masterpiece of an album.
[00:24:21] It's a crazy album.
[00:24:22] And I think it's one of the best.
[00:24:24] So yeah,
[00:24:25] 74 is low,
[00:24:26] but I'm glad it's on here.
[00:24:28] It should be on here.
[00:24:29] Steely Dan Aja,
[00:24:33] I think is how that's pronounced.
[00:24:34] Or it might even just be Asia.
[00:24:36] But I'm not sure.
[00:24:38] I just started getting in to Steely Dan and they're really good.
[00:24:46] And a lot of the songs that I like are off of this,
[00:24:48] like just on random listening on Spotify.
[00:24:52] Sorry,
[00:24:53] Apple music.
[00:24:54] I know this is your list,
[00:24:55] but I,
[00:24:56] I'm slowly converting into being a Steely Dan fan.
[00:25:00] I know that they're kind of like a band's band,
[00:25:02] especially in that like classic rock fandom.
[00:25:05] So I right now,
[00:25:08] me personally,
[00:25:09] I wouldn't put this on my top 100 list,
[00:25:11] but I understand why it's on this list because musicians love this band and love this record.
[00:25:16] This is only a seven song album.
[00:25:18] And I don't think I might know it to hear it,
[00:25:21] the songs,
[00:25:22] but what are the songs on it?
[00:25:24] I black cow,
[00:25:25] Aja or Asia,
[00:25:27] however you pronounce it.
[00:25:28] Deacon blues peg home at last.
[00:25:31] I got the news and Josie.
[00:25:33] You definitely know peg.
[00:25:36] Okay.
[00:25:38] The data,
[00:25:39] it's like an instrumental piece,
[00:25:41] but you know,
[00:25:42] peg,
[00:25:43] I promise you there's no way you've been to a party.
[00:25:46] There's no way you've been to a barbecue with a bunch of people your parents age and haven't heard peg playing out the speakers.
[00:25:56] All right.
[00:25:57] All right.
[00:25:58] SZA SOS.
[00:25:59] Love this album.
[00:26:00] I was gonna say you're the bigger SZA guy than me.
[00:26:03] This album is incredible.
[00:26:05] Matt,
[00:26:06] you should give this album another try.
[00:26:07] I like it front to back.
[00:26:08] It is one of the newer albums on this list and I think it deserves to be there.
[00:26:13] It would be in my top 100.
[00:26:15] It might be in like the 60 to 70 range on mine too.
[00:26:18] I think they got,
[00:26:19] I think they got the placement and the album right.
[00:26:21] I love this.
[00:26:22] I love that it's on here.
[00:26:24] All right.
[00:26:25] Sounds good.
[00:26:26] Moving on to Kraftwerk Trans Europe Express.
[00:26:31] Kraftwerk is another one of those groups that I keep hearing that I should listen to.
[00:26:35] I just never got into it because I'm not that much of a techno kind of guy,
[00:26:41] but I mean the name Kraft,
[00:26:44] when I hear the name Kraftwerk,
[00:26:45] I immediately think extremely influential band to like a very specific subgenre of music that I don't listen to.
[00:26:53] So I guess representation wise,
[00:26:55] sure.
[00:26:56] Early hip hop used Kraftwerk a lot.
[00:26:59] Kraftwerk samples a lot.
[00:27:01] I think that was like a commonly used thing.
[00:27:03] But yeah,
[00:27:04] I don't know this album at all and anytime I've listened to just straight up Kraftwerk,
[00:27:07] I'm like,
[00:27:08] this is something I would never listen to so it would not be on my top 100.
[00:27:13] All right.
[00:27:15] Let's see what's at 70 rounding this out.
[00:27:18] NWA straight out of Compton.
[00:27:20] I mean,
[00:27:21] yeah,
[00:27:22] it's on this list.
[00:27:23] It's such a good record.
[00:27:26] Something I mean,
[00:27:27] it's honestly one of those albums where it's the combination of these people is pretty much greater than any of their individual solo releases for the most part.
[00:27:38] I mean,
[00:27:39] the chronic from Dr. Dre is also pretty high up there,
[00:27:41] but in general,
[00:27:44] most of these guys were never able to be as good as they were during this album at that time.
[00:27:50] And I love this album.
[00:27:51] So let's go with it.
[00:27:52] Yeah,
[00:27:53] I mean,
[00:27:54] it should be on here.
[00:27:55] I agree.
[00:27:56] All right.
[00:27:57] Let's see what brings us into number 69 Metallica Master of the Puppets.
[00:28:03] I love this album.
[00:28:05] Whether you're a Metallica fan or not,
[00:28:08] this is like the Metallica album.
[00:28:10] I think I think I even heard Krista make say that at one point when you were asking him about Metallica and he said like this is this has the songs he would want to deconstruct on that show.
[00:28:21] Because you start I mean just the one two punch of battery right into Master of the Puppets Sanitarium.
[00:28:28] Do you call it Master of the Puppets?
[00:28:30] Sorry,
[00:28:31] Master of Puppets.
[00:28:32] And then like Sanitarium Welcome Home is such a great song.
[00:28:36] Damage Incorporated is such a good song.
[00:28:38] I mean,
[00:28:39] this was as much as I'm like lukewarm towards thrash metal.
[00:28:45] This album was unavoidable when I was a kid.
[00:28:49] This was the Metallica album to own.
[00:28:52] Yeah,
[00:28:53] I'm fine with it being on here.
[00:28:54] I'm not a Metallica fan,
[00:28:56] but I respect them.
[00:28:57] They wouldn't be on my top 100,
[00:28:59] but I this probably should be here.
[00:29:02] This would be on my top 100 actually.
[00:29:04] But and so with this The Strokes Is This It?
[00:29:08] The debut album from The Strokes featuring Last Night and Someday.
[00:29:12] I'm sure a lot of people would probably rather see Room on Fire here,
[00:29:17] but I love this record.
[00:29:19] Yeah,
[00:29:20] I mean,
[00:29:21] I just think sure,
[00:29:22] sure.
[00:29:23] I mean this has Last Night on it.
[00:29:24] I think that's probably it's one of the best Strokes songs and this was the one that kind of started it all.
[00:29:31] So yeah,
[00:29:32] 68 I'm fine with it.
[00:29:34] Probably if it made my top 100.
[00:29:37] I let me let me back up.
[00:29:39] It wouldn't make my top 100,
[00:29:40] but I understand,
[00:29:41] but I understand why it does so we can move on.
[00:29:44] All right.
[00:29:45] I mentioned this earlier Portishead Dummy.
[00:29:47] This album is also fantastic.
[00:29:49] I don't know.
[00:29:51] Oh my God.
[00:29:52] See,
[00:29:53] I really got into this just a couple years ago like that lo-fi type of like chilled out type music.
[00:30:02] So like this this feels to I'm trying to think of even like a band to compare it to.
[00:30:08] I guess a massive attack,
[00:30:09] which you also didn't know,
[00:30:10] but this is like just like so actually do you know the song six underground by the sneaker pimps?
[00:30:16] No,
[00:30:17] like take me down six underground.
[00:30:23] So it's basically a female fronted very like lo-fi hip hop beats with like a soft voice kind of like singing cryptic lyrics over top of it.
[00:30:35] It rules like this album.
[00:30:37] Absolutely rules should be on this list would definitely be on my list like two thumbs up.
[00:30:42] I'm glad to see it represented here.
[00:30:44] All right,
[00:30:45] you should check it out.
[00:30:46] I will check it out getting into some sad boy music at 66 with the Smiths.
[00:30:51] The Queen is dead,
[00:30:52] which I think does have my favorite Smith song on it.
[00:30:55] How soon is now?
[00:30:56] It does not it doesn't know it doesn't well then whatever fuck this album.
[00:30:59] Yeah,
[00:31:00] I was I was good.
[00:31:02] That's what I said.
[00:31:03] If it's if it's the Smiths and it's not how soon is now or maybe this charming man.
[00:31:08] If it's not one of those two songs,
[00:31:10] I'm not interested.
[00:31:11] The those are the two songs I want to hear.
[00:31:14] I wouldn't put this on the list.
[00:31:16] All right,
[00:31:17] I can see the preview in the corner and this would be not this would be on my list.
[00:31:22] It would be higher on my list.
[00:31:23] It would be my top 20.
[00:31:25] That's De La Soul three feet high and rising another one of the albums like I said earlier with doggy style that I would put on the list of great.
[00:31:32] It's like 10 greatest albums in the history of hip-hop.
[00:31:36] Wow,
[00:31:37] this album would be on there.
[00:31:39] Obviously most people know me myself and I from it magic number on this is really really great.
[00:31:46] It's one of the few rap albums with a bunch of skits on it that I don't hate.
[00:31:52] I actually think the skits are funny and keep the album moving a little bit buddy is on this featuring tribe called quest and De La Soul.
[00:32:01] Just like that whole native tongues movement of hip-hop is like so my shit.
[00:32:08] So yeah,
[00:32:09] this is a big thumbs up for me.
[00:32:11] I'm not really familiar with it enough to put it on my top 100 but I'll take your word for it Matt.
[00:32:16] I appreciate that.
[00:32:18] I appreciate that.
[00:32:19] All right,
[00:32:20] Erica Badoo body ism never got into Erica Badoo.
[00:32:26] I know we brought her and the neo soul movement up in a recent episode that we recorded.
[00:32:32] So I know that this is a pretty big album for a lot of people just not a world of music that I necessarily ventured into.
[00:32:41] Yeah,
[00:32:42] I when Erica Badoo is on I'm always like oh this is good but not enough for me to like really dive into Erica Badoo,
[00:32:49] but I'm sure this deserves to be here.
[00:32:52] It wouldn't be on mine,
[00:32:53] but I the people that put this list together.
[00:32:56] I'm sure they know what they're talking about with Erica Badoo.
[00:33:00] All right,
[00:33:01] let's see what is up next.
[00:33:03] We've got at 63 Jimi Hendrix experience.
[00:33:07] Are you experienced?
[00:33:09] I mean,
[00:33:10] this is the big debut album from Jimi Hendrix 90% of the Jimi Hendrix songs,
[00:33:15] you know are on this lady fire.
[00:33:20] Yeah,
[00:33:21] it's a great it's a great album whether you're doing a best list or an influential list that deserves to be on both.
[00:33:27] Now if it's just my personal albums,
[00:33:30] I want to listen to it wouldn't be on my list.
[00:33:33] But if I'm actually making a list of what I think are significant good great records that everyone should hear this would be on like my 100 albums.
[00:33:42] You should listen to list.
[00:33:43] Sure,
[00:33:44] it wouldn't be on my list,
[00:33:45] but I understand why it's on this list.
[00:33:49] So I think we might be split on this one Tupac all eyes on me.
[00:33:53] Not that I dis I just never got into Tupac.
[00:33:56] I tried I've I've listened to a lot of Tupac records in the Battle of Tupac versus Biggie.
[00:34:02] I'm firmly team Biggie on that one.
[00:34:05] I do think that if you're going to put a Tupac album on any list all eyes on me is the one dude.
[00:34:12] This is the album with California love on it,
[00:34:14] which I think is one of the greatest rap songs ever.
[00:34:17] How do you want it's on here?
[00:34:18] I ain't mad at you ambitions as a ride at two of America's most wanted with stoop dog.
[00:34:24] It's this is a really this would be hovering down at the bottom,
[00:34:29] but I would I I like that it's in their Apple music best 100 albums.
[00:34:35] I think it should be probably and I and I'm not saying I mean even on my again.
[00:34:40] My favorite 100 albums absolutely not but if I was doing a list like this absolutely
[00:34:45] and I think 62 is a good spot for it.
[00:34:48] Oh, here we go.
[00:34:49] My favorite shot a shot a love to I was going to try to prove to you that I could say it.
[00:34:54] A love deluxe obviously I used to think her name was said so I've listened to a ton of shot a Chris tell us why this should
[00:35:03] or shouldn't be on this list.
[00:35:05] I kind of only know shot a singles and not entire albums,
[00:35:09] but I do know that no ordinary love is on this album.
[00:35:13] And even though it wouldn't be on my top 100 because I don't know the whole album that song alone.
[00:35:19] I wouldn't argue with someone saying like yo if you like no ordinary or you like no ordinary love this album should be on there.
[00:35:26] So I got no problems with it shot a is incredible.
[00:35:30] All right hit number 60 here with the Velvet Underground and Nico Chris.
[00:35:36] What is your vibe on on this band?
[00:35:40] I Velvet Underground is one of those groups where like I got really into Lou Reed's solo stuff,
[00:35:46] but I never actually dug too much deeper into Velvet Underground except for like a handful of songs blind spot for me major blind spot.
[00:35:54] Of course everyone knows this banana on the cover of the album very iconic image to Andy Warhol image.
[00:36:03] But yeah, I just I don't know it.
[00:36:06] It's so obviously it wouldn't be on mine, but I think it would be on most music historians list.
[00:36:11] So absolutely from historical stance.
[00:36:13] This is clearly a very important record Arctic Monkeys am this is another group.
[00:36:18] I feel like I always get embarrassed when we do lists like this because I realized how many blind spots I have because I was too busy memorizing Five Iron Frenzies entire discography to get into the Arctic Monkeys.
[00:36:31] But I mean every song I've ever heard by the Arctic Monkeys.
[00:36:34] I thought oh, this is a really good song.
[00:36:37] So what's your thoughts Chris?
[00:36:38] We're getting close to the 50 point here where we're halfway up the list.
[00:36:43] This feels high.
[00:36:44] I don't know this album.
[00:36:45] I do like some Arctic Monkeys songs, but I don't know this whole album.
[00:36:49] Obviously it wouldn't be on mine.
[00:36:51] Yeah, it does feel high in all the history of music.
[00:36:54] You're telling me this Arctic Monkeys album that I've never heard is in the top 60 at number 59.
[00:37:01] Yeah, I think that's kind of bullshit so we can move on.
[00:37:05] Here's a juggernaut of an album Oasis.
[00:37:07] What's the story Morning Glory?
[00:37:09] This would be on my 100 best albums list.
[00:37:12] This would probably even be on my 100 personal favorite albums list.
[00:37:16] Talk about just like the singles that wouldn't quit on this record.
[00:37:21] You've got probably the three biggest songs they've ever put out on this album with Wonderwall, Champagne, Supernova and Don't Look Back in Anger.
[00:37:30] But then you've got these other deep cut tracks like Roll With It and Hello and like every song on this.
[00:37:39] This was like Oasis and I'm not even that big of an Oasis fan.
[00:37:42] I just think that when they got in the studio to record this album, they could not miss.
[00:37:49] And I don't think they've ever been able to capture that energy again.
[00:37:52] Easily one of the biggest albums of the 90s.
[00:37:55] Certainly should be on this list in my opinion.
[00:37:57] I would agree it should be on the list, but it wouldn't be on if it was my best.
[00:38:01] It wouldn't be on the list.
[00:38:03] I respect it and kind of like the songs more than I ever have now.
[00:38:07] I didn't like it at the time.
[00:38:08] Wouldn't be on my list.
[00:38:09] I feel like I'm such a negative Nancy about their list so far, but it's fine.
[00:38:14] It's fine.
[00:38:15] It should be there obviously.
[00:38:16] All right, let's see D'Angelo Voodoo.
[00:38:19] This is similar to Erykah Badu and just like I missed out on this entire like neo soul movement that was happening.
[00:38:27] I obviously remember the music video where D'Angelo is just full ass naked spinning around.
[00:38:34] I don't know if that's from the Voodoo album or not, but that's basically where my knowledge of D'Angelo begins.
[00:38:39] Yeah, this had the song Untitled, How Does It Feel on it.
[00:38:43] If I was going to go with a D'Angelo album, which a D'Angelo album would not be on my top 100,
[00:38:48] but if there had to be one, it would be the Brown Sugar album.
[00:38:51] So I don't know this album well enough to put it in mine.
[00:38:55] So we can keep it going.
[00:38:57] All right.
[00:38:58] 56, Disintegrate.
[00:39:01] Oh my God.
[00:39:02] Disintegrate.
[00:39:03] No.
[00:39:04] Disintegration.
[00:39:05] Disintegration.
[00:39:06] I listen, whatever.
[00:39:07] The Cure.
[00:39:08] This album's great.
[00:39:10] Arguably in the conversation for best Cure album.
[00:39:15] They've got a couple good ones in this same time period.
[00:39:19] But like this is a good album.
[00:39:21] This has Love Song on it.
[00:39:22] This has Pictures of You on it.
[00:39:24] But if I just can't believe it wouldn't be Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.
[00:39:28] Well, that's what I was going to say.
[00:39:29] I think that there's like four Cure albums that all came out one after another where
[00:39:36] I think any of them would be valid.
[00:39:39] I think that this one just has the most stacked track list as far as hits go.
[00:39:45] I think there's like four songs on this album that were big hits.
[00:39:49] Yeah, I don't know, man.
[00:39:51] I don't know.
[00:39:52] I mean, I'm cool.
[00:39:54] The Cure had to be on this list.
[00:39:56] I guess I'd have to dive deeper to decide which Cure album.
[00:39:59] I don't think it would be this one for me.
[00:40:01] Yeah, because I'm looking here.
[00:40:02] Lullaby, Fascination Street, Love Song and Pictures of You.
[00:40:05] Those are all pretty massive singles.
[00:40:10] But I do agree with you.
[00:40:12] You have albums like the Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me album is phenomenal and you get just
[00:40:17] like heaven off of that one.
[00:40:19] As long as the Cure is represented, I'm happy.
[00:40:22] Yeah, I'm okay with that.
[00:40:24] Alright, 55 Anti from Rihanna.
[00:40:28] Rihanna I've been starting to get into.
[00:40:31] I've talked about before, there was this period right after college where I just was not paying
[00:40:36] attention to anything happening on the radio at all.
[00:40:39] And that was like Rihanna at her peak.
[00:40:42] But Chris, I think you're more of a fan.
[00:40:44] Tell me, is this the album or the wrong one?
[00:40:46] I love this album.
[00:40:47] I love this album.
[00:40:48] I'm glad this...
[00:40:49] If I had to put a Rihanna album...
[00:40:51] Actually, this album would be in my top 100 as a favorite somewhere.
[00:40:55] And this album has work on it.
[00:40:57] I love work.
[00:40:59] Kiss It Better is on this album.
[00:41:00] James Joy.
[00:41:02] This album's awesome.
[00:41:03] If you haven't listened to Rihanna's Anti album, go check it out.
[00:41:06] It is great.
[00:41:07] It's a great summer listen too.
[00:41:08] You might enjoy it right now.
[00:41:10] Alright, I'll make it a point to check that one out.
[00:41:12] Jonathan Coltrane.
[00:41:13] Jonathan Coltrane.
[00:41:14] Oh my God.
[00:41:17] Him and I get along.
[00:41:18] We're very prim and proper together.
[00:41:20] John Coltrane, A Love Supreme.
[00:41:22] Obviously, I don't know this record.
[00:41:24] I don't know a ton of John Coltrane stuff.
[00:41:26] But when you think of jazz musician,
[00:41:30] John Coltrane is usually one of the big heavy hitters.
[00:41:34] So I'm just going to go ahead and trust Apple Music that if I want to start
[00:41:37] getting into John Coltrane, this is probably the record I should start with.
[00:41:40] Matt, you might not believe this, but this one's before my time.
[00:41:43] What?
[00:41:44] No.
[00:41:45] All right.
[00:41:46] Let's see what's next here.
[00:41:48] Rolling Stones, Exile on Main Street.
[00:41:51] So one of my old podcasts before my time,
[00:41:54] we did a track by track breakdown of this record.
[00:41:56] It's widely considered the best Rolling Stones record.
[00:41:59] I don't know if I fully agree with that.
[00:42:02] I personally really, really like Goat Head Soup from the Rolling Stones.
[00:42:05] But this is a great album,
[00:42:08] even especially for me who did not like the Stones.
[00:42:12] This was the album that kind of made me start to go like, all right,
[00:42:15] let me dig deeper into their catalog.
[00:42:18] This has got everything from a song that feels like early influence for heavy
[00:42:23] metal to some very bluesy songs to some of more of what you're used to the
[00:42:28] Stones sounding like.
[00:42:29] The irony is that I don't think that any of the songs on this album are big
[00:42:34] hits to the modern listening audience.
[00:42:38] I remember looking at the track list being like,
[00:42:40] I don't think I know any of these songs.
[00:42:43] And I think that that's what kind of made it even more exciting and different
[00:42:46] to dive in.
[00:42:47] So not on my personal 100 favorite albums,
[00:42:51] but if I was being asked to do a list like this,
[00:42:55] I would probably say yeah.
[00:42:56] And about 53 is about the right spot for it too.
[00:42:59] I'm not a Stones guy.
[00:43:01] They wouldn't be on my top 100.
[00:43:03] There might be four or five Beatles albums on my top 100,
[00:43:05] but not a Stones guy.
[00:43:06] I was going to say,
[00:43:07] I'm very interested in the fact that there have been no Beatles so far.
[00:43:10] Guns N' Roses,
[00:43:12] Appetite for Destruction.
[00:43:13] At 52.
[00:43:14] At 52 listeners.
[00:43:15] We're trying to keep you updated on where we're at.
[00:43:18] Sorry, sorry.
[00:43:19] At number 52,
[00:43:20] I mean this album is a juggernaut for sure.
[00:43:25] It's easily the best Guns N' Roses release you get.
[00:43:29] Welcome to the Jungle,
[00:43:30] Sweet Child of Mine and Paradise City on here.
[00:43:33] Also like other fan favorites like Out to Get Me is on here.
[00:43:36] Rocket Queen is a pretty beloved song from Guns N' Roses.
[00:43:40] And also like just the fact that they kind of walked this line of not quite
[00:43:48] hair metal and like that's how they were able to survive grunge more than
[00:43:53] like a band like Poison did.
[00:43:56] I mean they put out Use Your Illusion at the peak of grunge and then
[00:44:00] kind of self-destruct it.
[00:44:01] But I definitely think that this album should be on here.
[00:44:06] This album is really good.
[00:44:08] It's really well organized.
[00:44:10] It's an insane debut record from a band and maybe would be on my personal
[00:44:18] favorite 100 albums list maybe but definitely like I said if I was asked
[00:44:23] to do a list of best albums this should be on here.
[00:44:26] 52 feels a little high.
[00:44:28] I would maybe put it in like the 60 70 range but still like this album's way
[00:44:34] too massive and important to not be there.
[00:44:36] Yeah those three big hits alone it wouldn't be on if I was making my
[00:44:41] favorite list but yeah it should it should be somewhere on a best list.
[00:44:45] Yeah I agree.
[00:44:46] All right so here's the top of the bottom half here.
[00:44:49] Prince Sign of the Times an album that I think we just talked about on this
[00:44:54] week's episode.
[00:44:55] We did.
[00:44:56] We did a list of one hit thunder and I think you made it very clear not not
[00:45:00] your favorite Prince.
[00:45:01] I that song the song sign of the time this album has my favorite Prince
[00:45:05] song.
[00:45:06] I can never take the place of your man is on here.
[00:45:08] So let me ask you a question.
[00:45:10] Spoiler alert.
[00:45:11] Is this the only Prince appearance on this list?
[00:45:14] No it is not.
[00:45:15] Okay then I am okay with this placement.
[00:45:18] If there's only one Prince album on the list I feel like there's a very
[00:45:22] clear stronger album.
[00:45:24] I mean if I was your girlfriend is on this album I could never take the
[00:45:29] place of your man is on this album.
[00:45:31] Otherwise the album as a whole would not be on my top 100.
[00:45:35] I love Prince but yeah.
[00:45:37] But it's an important it's definitely an important album.
[00:45:40] All right number 50 Hounds of Love Kate Bush.
[00:45:44] Hell yeah.
[00:45:45] Let me ask you let me ask you a question.
[00:45:47] I love this album.
[00:45:48] Do you think this album makes this list if not for the last season of
[00:45:53] Stranger Things.
[00:45:55] She did get a big resurgence but this album has been beloved man for a long
[00:46:00] time.
[00:46:01] It might not be at 50 maybe it would have been at like 100 or something.
[00:46:04] Yeah but this album is incredible if you haven't dug further than running
[00:46:10] up that hill this the title track Hounds of Love so awesome cloud buster
[00:46:16] yeah cloud busting is on this album it's so so good.
[00:46:20] It's such an experience of a listen just greed into like how she made this
[00:46:26] album and stuff it's so so good amazing front cover of I mean everything about
[00:46:32] this.
[00:46:33] She's so cool.
[00:46:34] I love Kate Bush now I agree Kate Bush higher on my list.
[00:46:39] This would be in my top like 40.
[00:46:42] Yeah I dove into Kate Bush more after Stranger Things as embarrassing as that
[00:46:46] is to admit.
[00:46:47] And I mean this album is great and so is this one 49 the Joshua Tree by you
[00:46:55] too.
[00:46:56] If you choose only going to have one album on this list it should absolutely
[00:47:00] a thousand percent be the Joshua Tree.
[00:47:02] The first three tracks alone is like one of the most impressive runs of going
[00:47:07] from where the streets have no name with or without you and I know these are
[00:47:13] not the exact order that it is.
[00:47:15] And still haven't found what I'm looking for like those are three of the
[00:47:19] finest songs that you too has ever crafted in a row.
[00:47:23] Yeah and then I always tell people check out bullet the blue sky it might not
[00:47:28] be one of the YouTube songs that you're most familiar with but if you want to
[00:47:32] know how you too was one of the few like bands of the 80s to survive the grunge
[00:47:37] movement of the 90s there is so much of an early grunge sound influence on
[00:47:43] bullet the blue sky with like a lot of quiet loud quiet there like very heavy
[00:47:50] bass and drum driven with the guitars more subdued.
[00:47:53] This is this is absolutely one of my favorite albums of all time would be on
[00:47:57] my personal top 100 would be on my top 100 just you know influential and best
[00:48:02] song albums list as well.
[00:48:04] I'll buy that I would probably go both it would probably be on my top 100 of
[00:48:08] both as well.
[00:48:10] Oh boy Chris you know I've sung the praises of this one for years.
[00:48:14] I say it is the number one greatest rap album of all time and it looks like
[00:48:19] Apple Music is somewhat backing me here at number 58 the Beastie Boys Paul's
[00:48:23] Boutique 48 Paul's Boutique I would I would keep it here I'll keep it in like
[00:48:29] the 40s basically this album for what it did for sampling the combination of
[00:48:36] the Beastie Boys with the Dust Brothers it was a combination that only happened
[00:48:40] once after this the Beastie Boys started to self-produce themselves but this
[00:48:45] record is just insane it is one of the most interesting sonic listens I've ever
[00:48:51] had.
[00:48:52] I know I've sung the praises of this I think Matt Milligan has sung the praises
[00:48:56] of this on our show there's been quite a few people who have agreed that this
[00:49:00] album really is one that you don't want to miss out on and I think it's because
[00:49:05] the vibe at the time was that it was a failure right like this was no license
[00:49:09] to ill it didn't have like a big single on it so it kind of flopped and then
[00:49:14] years later kind of got the reevaluation that it's a masterpiece but I've enjoyed
[00:49:19] it from the second I bought it I bought it as a completionist thinking that it
[00:49:24] was going to be a bad record and by like the third track I was like this might be
[00:49:28] the best thing the Beastie Boys have ever made.
[00:49:30] I gotta dive into this one more because I have heard you really hyped this one up
[00:49:34] for a long time so I mean I've said before like the sampling I mean this is kind
[00:49:39] of bismal we talked about recently like Bismarcky getting hurt real bad by the
[00:49:44] sampling controversy and like that's really unfair because the Beastie Boys
[00:49:48] did a lot more damage right before that out that song came out I mean this
[00:49:53] literally ends a track ends with them sampling the shower scene from Psycho and
[00:49:58] the girl dying from Jaws on top of each other as the end of a track and I don't
[00:50:03] think they paid a single penny to anybody for it so yeah it's why you have to
[00:50:09] pay to sample things now Drake take care you are way more the Drake guy that I
[00:50:14] am at 47 I mean at 47 this I've like thought about like what the best Drake
[00:50:21] album is before I think this is probably it this album has headlines on it over
[00:50:25] my dead body Marvin's room doing it wrong hell yeah fucking right is on here
[00:50:30] make me proud is on here Lord knows is on here which is funny because it's a
[00:50:34] song with Rick Ross and Rick Ross famously hates Drake now and talk shit
[00:50:39] on him all the time you know whatever you think of Drake as a person I think
[00:50:44] people's attitudes have really changed about him but it's a great like you know
[00:50:50] the pop elements are what makes it so great you know and I think it's just
[00:50:54] like a lot of catchy good songs and yeah I think take care if I had to put it
[00:50:59] if I had to put a Drake album my top 100 this would be the one all right at 46
[00:51:05] Bob Marley and the whalers with Exodus now I think excluding Bob Marley's
[00:51:11] greatest hits this was probably the best-selling reggae album in history
[00:51:17] you've got four massive singles on this one the the title track Exodus which is
[00:51:24] probably the least famous of the three you've got jamming on air you've got
[00:51:28] three little birds on here and you've got one love on here which are all just
[00:51:33] like when you think of Bob Marley those are three of the first songs that come
[00:51:38] to your mind I remember buying the Bob Marley legend album and being like I
[00:51:44] want to get all of his albums and then I realized that pretty much every song I
[00:51:48] buy him was on Exodus so not I mean again for my part if I was making a list
[00:51:54] of just Matt Kelly's favorite hundred albums Bob Marley wouldn't make it in
[00:51:59] like four punchline records would but as far as important influential albums this
[00:52:05] yeah this should be on here I think 46 is kind of high I would put this in like
[00:52:09] 70 or 80 range but it's a big album this wouldn't be on my list but it should be
[00:52:14] on the list it's one of those well I think this one's gonna be on your list
[00:52:19] oh yeah well here's the thing at number 45 we got Bjork with homogenic this is
[00:52:25] Bjork's only appearance on the list spoiler alert and this is my third
[00:52:30] favorite Bjork album so I would have had Vesper teen at number one I would have
[00:52:35] had post at number two and I would have had this and number three and all three
[00:52:41] of those albums would have been in my top 100 this album has hunter it has
[00:52:46] yoga it has unravel bachelorette all is full of love this is a great album of if
[00:52:53] you go buy her greatest hits DVD of all her music videos there's some incredible
[00:52:59] music videos from this album and in general it's great it's moody it's uh
[00:53:07] it's emotional as hell and I love it don't get me wrong I absolutely love this
[00:53:13] album I love that it's on here I love that it's this high and I just think that
[00:53:18] if I was making my top 100 this is probably where I'd put homogenic this
[00:53:23] seems like the right place in the top 100 but then I would have two more beer
[00:53:27] I'm two more higher there would be higher yeah so so they got this right but
[00:53:31] what they didn't get right is not putting more Bjork albums on this list
[00:53:36] that's that's how strongly I feel about Bjork all right well at 44 we've got
[00:53:41] inner visions by Stevie Wonder I'm going to ask you for another spoiler is this
[00:53:45] the only Stevie appearance on here it is not okay good I mean inner visions is
[00:53:50] really good but I again if this was on here and songs in the key of you was not
[00:53:55] that would be her songs in the key of life was not that would be a huge fumble
[00:54:00] I mean inner visions is the second best Stevie Wonder record so this is this is
[00:54:06] great this is a great placement 44 is a great spot for it it's a great album
[00:54:10] yeah this is the album with higher ground this is one when he had a streak
[00:54:14] of winning best album at the Grammys like three albums in a row this was one
[00:54:18] of them yeah there should be multiple Stevie Wonder albums on this list so no
[00:54:23] arguments for me talking heads remain in the light this is the album that of
[00:54:28] us oh my god I just blanked on the name of the song once in a lifetime I was
[00:54:32] like I was gonna say the this is not my beautiful house yeah this this record
[00:54:37] is real I mean the talking heads in general I mean you could you could have
[00:54:42] like five of their albums on this list for all I care they have so many good
[00:54:45] records but I think this is the one that really blew them up this is the one that
[00:54:50] probably influenced the most people because it gave them the most mainstream
[00:54:54] attention and I mean just for once in a lifetime alone like absolutely yeah I'm
[00:55:01] fine with it because of once in a lifetime alone I'll openly admit I know a
[00:55:06] lot of songs by talking heads I don't know whole albums by by them so I'm
[00:55:12] gonna trust that the good people at Apple music knew what they were talking
[00:55:16] about with exploring all the talking heads albums and picking this one as
[00:55:20] number 43 on their list all right well you're gonna have to tell me if they
[00:55:25] made the right call on Janet Jackson control this should absolutely be on
[00:55:29] this list now it's probably my second favorite Janet Jackson album behind the
[00:55:35] velvet rope but control is amazing spoiler alert again this is the only
[00:55:40] Janet album on this list oh yeah so they I mean that's that's shocking yeah
[00:55:47] literally yeah velvet rope I would put velvet rope on this over control yeah
[00:55:52] but control one Janet let me tell you all the hits on control because I love
[00:55:56] telling people that Janet had more hits than Michael which is true this album
[00:56:01] alone the song control nasty what have you done for me lately the pleasure
[00:56:06] principle when I think of you let's wait a while are all on this album there's
[00:56:11] six hits alone on this album mainstream I mean those are all big hits for sure
[00:56:16] I just as a cohesive album this should be the velvet rope the velvet the velvet
[00:56:21] rope is I would argue one of the like 40 greatest albums of all time I would I
[00:56:26] would agree as this list is is supposed to be so this is interesting to me 41
[00:56:33] quest at 41 outcast how do you pronounce even the name of the mini aqua mini is
[00:56:41] this the only outcast because this is my least favorite outcast this is the only
[00:56:45] outcast on I think that this is a huge mistake yeah thank Onia or at at land at
[00:56:52] Lali and both should be on this instead and actually I'm incorrect this is not
[00:56:57] my least favorite the southern Cadillac playlist music is my least favorite
[00:57:02] outcast album but of the three big outcast albums this is the one I always
[00:57:06] rank the lowest of those speaker box and love below would I mean not to be an
[00:57:11] obvious person but I think that should be the one on here yeah I mean look
[00:57:16] there's a I I love outcast being like right in this spot I just do not think
[00:57:22] this is the app that they should be represented with on this yeah I don't
[00:57:26] know this album all right Aretha Franklin I never loved a man the way I love you
[00:57:34] Aretha Franklin is obviously one of those people where you I know the songs
[00:57:37] more than I know the albums but this list would always feel incomplete without
[00:57:42] some type of representation of Aretha so I'm gonna trust Apple music and saying
[00:57:46] that this is the the album yeah it's number 40 with this Aretha Franklin
[00:57:52] album this is the album that has respect on it so yeah if you're gonna have an
[00:57:56] Aretha album on your list it better be the one that has a respect on it I don't
[00:58:00] know the whole album either so I'm gonna trust Apple music on this one
[00:58:03] wouldn't be on my top 100 all right so now we're in the top 40 with that one so
[00:58:08] at 39 Illmatic Nas now I know you're a stillmatic guy as am I you're a still
[00:58:14] mad if you and I are stillmatic and God's God's son people I think but
[00:58:18] Illmatic is an undeniable beast of a debut record yeah just 10 amazing tracks
[00:58:27] so absolutely that's why we get high cuz you never know when you're gonna go
[00:58:33] yeah it's great and Nas I put him up there as one of the all-time greatest
[00:58:37] rappers he's got one of the best voices for it one of the best flows ever
[00:58:43] Nas is awesome yeah yeah this I'm no no notes here this is an album that I just
[00:58:49] started to dive into in the last year or two and I absolutely love it Carole King
[00:58:53] tapestry this is another one where it's like hit after hit after hit after hit
[00:58:59] on this record dude at number 38 I think this should be higher I actually this
[00:59:03] should be top 20 to me I should be easy to be top 10 to be honest yeah this album
[00:59:07] has I feel the earth move it has so far away man I love so far away it's too late
[00:59:14] love that you've got a friend where you lead aka the Gilmore Girls a natural
[00:59:21] woman is on here the end on top of that the album cover is her sitting by a
[00:59:26] window with her cat you cannot win me over more than that I love Carole King I
[00:59:31] think this is a top 10 album I think Apple Music dropped the ball by putting
[00:59:36] this low how are you gonna put this this low Chris I think you should do a solo
[00:59:41] album one day and just recreate this photo I love it with your cat I love it
[00:59:47] that should be your new Facebook profile picture is you recreating the tapestry
[00:59:52] cover all right at 37 the magic number we've got enter the Wu-Tang 36 chambers
[00:59:58] for the Wu-Tang Clan why did they not put it at 36 that's outrageous yeah obvious
[01:00:04] mistake there but again I've mentioned this hypothetical 10 greatest rap albums
[01:00:10] list in my mind this is another one that's definitely on that list for me and
[01:00:15] it's it's another one where like I've always liked the Wu-Tang Clan I've
[01:00:19] always liked most of the guys in the band solo music this is kind of like
[01:00:25] when you hear a band's demo and then you hear the record there's something about
[01:00:32] how raw and imperfect this album is in comparison to everything else when they
[01:00:38] had way more of like a know-how that just makes this album irresistible the
[01:00:43] fact that they're rapping is just like a little off the beat at times and that
[01:00:47] like you know that Riz is still just or just is just starting to like get into
[01:00:53] the weeds of how to make these beats so they're kind of a little sloppy and like
[01:00:57] it's mixed just a little incorrectly that makes it so good and they've never
[01:01:02] been able to capture that again no matter how many great records they put out this
[01:01:07] is this is top 10 this should be in the time I think 37 is pretty low but I think
[01:01:12] pretty low is a little too low and like you said it should just be moved up one
[01:01:17] more spot anyway just to put it at 36 but yeah yeah this should absolutely be
[01:01:21] on this list it would be in my top 100 but it would be low in my top 100 because
[01:01:26] I don't really listen to it on a regular basis but I always enjoy it when it's on
[01:01:31] so it should be on this list I was in this album way too much for Beyonce
[01:01:36] Beyonce self-titled Beyonce remind me what's on this one so at number 36 we
[01:01:42] got Beyonce's self-titled this has drunk in love on it it has a partition on it
[01:01:47] okay it's good wouldn't be in my top 100 okay fair enough all right let's see
[01:01:53] what's at 35 here London calling by the clash obviously if you're gonna have
[01:01:57] something from the clash on here this should be there I'm realizing that this
[01:02:01] is kind of the first punk anything that's shown up on the list really yeah
[01:02:06] which is I mean if this is the only punk album that shows up on the entire list I
[01:02:11] don't know how I feel about that but I mean this is a this is a great record
[01:02:16] and this is a record that has a lot of tracks it's like 21 or 22 tracks I want
[01:02:21] to say and it keeps your attention throughout the whole thing it feels it
[01:02:26] feels the way that punk music is supposed to make you feel right like it's urgent
[01:02:30] it feels like they have a lot to say and they're gonna say all of it as quickly
[01:02:34] as they can and it's just got that like it's it's a very it's definitely the
[01:02:40] best release from the clash it's iconic cover iconic everything really so I'm
[01:02:48] okay with this like right here at 35 I wouldn't put it higher than this I like
[01:02:52] the spirit of this album I feel like Apple music would feel ridiculous if
[01:02:56] they didn't put it on here it wouldn't be in my top 100 because it was just I
[01:03:00] don't know before my time and just not my thing but I do like punk music so you
[01:03:06] know they you know what they were an influence indirectly on me for sure but
[01:03:10] I don't know just not too interested in this album all right 34 we've got it
[01:03:16] takes a nation of millions to hold us back by public enemy absolutely this is
[01:03:21] the public enemy album that you should pick I think it might not have it might
[01:03:27] not have the biggest hits from public enemy it definitely has songs that you
[01:03:31] know but it's not you're not gonna find like fight the power or 911 is a joke on
[01:03:35] here but I think as a cohesive album this is the best album that public enemy
[01:03:40] ever put out bring the noises on here so yeah that's that's awesome I wouldn't
[01:03:46] be in my top 100 but I respect the fact that it's on this list and it's as high
[01:03:50] as it is yeah that's a really high placement is yeah well no I know for a
[01:03:54] fact it's not the highest rap album on this list but anyway 33 Radiohead kid a
[01:04:01] best radiohead album see and I was gonna say I disagree I I think today is right
[01:04:07] where I start to lose interest in Radiohead I'm way more of a the bends and
[01:04:12] okay computer guy over today but I Radiohead should be on here this wouldn't
[01:04:18] have been my album pick but I know that there are people who think that this
[01:04:21] should be the number one record of all time so song the national anthem that's
[01:04:25] like national anthems really good it is really good everything in its right
[01:04:29] place is on this album this album it's awesome it's a good album it's just
[01:04:33] it's it's not it's not what I want it would be my top 100 it'd be like 60
[01:04:38] alright here's an album that would also be on my metaphorical 100 rap albums at
[01:04:43] 32 ready to die by notorious BIG this is another no skip record actually that's a
[01:04:49] lie there's one track I always skip on this record which is the track just
[01:04:53] called fuck me that's just a minute of notorious BIG having sex I've never felt
[01:05:01] good listening to that be it in the car on headphones alone it's just very
[01:05:07] uncomfortable but you get big papa you get juicy yeah you get give me then you
[01:05:12] give me the loot which is my favorite biggie track suicidal thoughts which is
[01:05:17] such an incredible closing track this this is a truly beast of a day this might
[01:05:24] be my favorite rap debut album I would put this over Elmatic I think this man
[01:05:32] juicy I think is maybe the best rap song ever if it's top three or five for me
[01:05:38] I'd have to like write it out I love big papa I love give me the loot the rest of
[01:05:43] the album I could give or take it might crack my top 100 but it's not a
[01:05:48] guarantee it should be it should be on the list though this would be guaranteed
[01:05:52] to my top 100 favorite albums for sure as with 31 jagged little pill Alanis
[01:05:56] Morissette this is another one that I think is a no skip record beyond the fact
[01:06:00] that you've got the juggernaut hits that came off of this with you ought to know
[01:06:04] hand in my pocket head over head over feet you learn and ironic you also had
[01:06:10] like and all I really want which is probably my favorite Alanis Morissette
[01:06:14] song forgiven which is an amazing deep cut on this not the doctor Mary Jane
[01:06:20] there's just a ton of amazing songs on this album you beyond just the singles
[01:06:25] that you know you'd have to be if you're making a list you'd have been an idiot
[01:06:28] not to put this album on it you I don't know your album what your list would be
[01:06:35] null and void if you didn't put it on there but that being said I wouldn't put
[01:06:39] it on mine but it's still really really good album this would be on my any list
[01:06:44] that you gave me Wow I would do it Billy Eilish when we fall asleep where do we
[01:06:49] go I really like this record I like for most people they're gonna know the song
[01:06:54] bad guy off of this Barry a friend really I really like you should see me in a crown
[01:06:59] this was just such an interesting strange pop record to come out at that time
[01:07:06] and I really like it and terrifying cover I mean it's really good I really
[01:07:11] like that final track I love you the real yeah I'll song I it's grown on me
[01:07:17] more and more I didn't really care about it first I like it now I think 30 is high
[01:07:23] and I know 30 is really high for any recently released record yeah but I guess
[01:07:27] you're just taking into consideration like you're going I hope they're going
[01:07:31] purely on the songs and they're like Billy Eilish should absolutely be on this
[01:07:36] list I don't think she'd be on my top 100 yet but I feel like I actually
[01:07:41] haven't listened to our newest album yet but I at some point she's gonna make
[01:07:45] an album because she's so good and so creative that she's gonna release now
[01:07:49] where I'm like oh yeah this is definitely on my top 100 I don't know if this is
[01:07:53] the one that is but I think she's gonna top this record in her career there's no
[01:07:59] way she doesn't all right at 29 the tribe called quest low end theory
[01:08:04] absolutely my personal favorite tribe called crest quest record you've got
[01:08:10] obviously a scenario that brought them and the leaders of the new school
[01:08:14] together you also get bugging out on here and check the rhyme and then just a
[01:08:20] ton of other great great songs honestly so I really like this record this is
[01:08:27] this is again I've mentioned a couple times now in my bizarre here's the 10
[01:08:31] best rap albums of all time list I mean I lean very heavy to the 90s this would
[01:08:35] be on there as well it's a feel-good album to put on it's fun to listen to
[01:08:40] wouldn't be in my top 100 but I respect that it's here all right let's see at
[01:08:45] 28 we've got dark side of the moon pink Floyd I've never been a huge pink Floyd
[01:08:50] guy but obviously this is the one to go with yeah sure the wall sure we don't
[01:08:54] say much more about this one it should be on there same with Led Zeppelin to I
[01:08:58] think he's just the right call absolutely if you're into classic rock
[01:09:03] Kanye at 26 with my dark twisted fan my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
[01:09:09] I mean I don't like giving props to Kanye for the most part if you're gonna
[01:09:14] put him on this list it should be this or college dropout 26 feels real damn
[01:09:20] high to me and let me clarify if I was doing favorite albums and I had to put a
[01:09:25] Kanye one on I'd put graduation purse well what breaks my heart about Kanye is
[01:09:30] that he's one of those people I can't I can't separate the art from the artist I
[01:09:36] don't know why I can't do it with him he let me down so bad and but if I
[01:09:42] thought late registration was one of the greatest albums ever made I really I
[01:09:47] mean late registry I think late registration and graduation are better
[01:09:51] than college dropout but I think that college dropouts the more important I
[01:09:56] think registration is one college dropout is to graduation is three and
[01:10:01] probably this one beautiful dark twisted fantasy is for I know these albums
[01:10:05] inside and out I was obsessed with these albums and yeah this feels too high for
[01:10:14] this album I think but if I if I was able to separate the art from the artist and
[01:10:20] just go on albums then honestly late registration be a top 10 for me all
[01:10:24] right that's good to know Miles Davis kind of blue I just recently dug into
[01:10:30] this album because it's one that shows up on every list of greatest albums of
[01:10:34] all time when they're trying to cover everything I know this is before your
[01:10:38] time but yeah like Jack when it comes to jazz records this is the the album this
[01:10:46] is the jazz album that everyone says to start with because it is it's just it's
[01:10:50] a great great release that's all we really need to say about that at 25 I
[01:10:54] think at 24 the rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the spiders from Mars from
[01:11:00] David Bowie probably my favorite Bowie it's pretty high up there with most
[01:11:05] people I would say not a big Bowie guy but I know Starman is on this album I
[01:11:10] don't know entire Bowie albums obviously he wouldn't be on my top 100
[01:11:15] just because I'm not a Bowie guy like I'm not a Rolling Stones guy I like Bowie
[01:11:19] more than like the Rolling Stones I will say that I think he's interesting the
[01:11:23] songs don't really do a lot for me but you know maybe I haven't dove in enough
[01:11:31] to David Bowie I always feel like he's one of those people like maybe I just
[01:11:34] haven't heard the right songs because he's definitely doing cool stuff and
[01:11:38] pushing boundaries I like that but yeah yeah I guess sure sure it should be on
[01:11:43] here there you go 23 Daft Punk discovery this is a great I mean this is the Daft
[01:11:50] Punk record if you're gonna put a Daft Punk record on there you got harder
[01:11:54] better faster stronger you've got aerodynamic one more time you've got my
[01:12:00] personal favorite by them which is the digital love song is just fucking
[01:12:05] unbelievable I love on this album I love high life yeah it's there's not a really
[01:12:12] good there's not a skipping track on this at all so absolutely I don't know if I
[01:12:16] would have put it 25 23 on my personal list but this definitely needs a place
[01:12:20] on a 100 list 23 is very high for this album but it would be in my top 100 yeah
[01:12:26] okay now we're I think we're about to hit where it's like just based on should
[01:12:31] this be this high or not born to run Bruce Springsteen this is the Bruce
[01:12:36] Springsteen record as far as I'm concerned it doesn't have the hits that
[01:12:40] born in the USA has but I mean you get Thunder Road which is argue like in the
[01:12:45] argument for one of the best songs ever written you've got the title track born
[01:12:49] to run you've got 10th Avenue freeze out on here I think my no my hometown is
[01:12:54] on born in the USA but this is a great great great great great record I just
[01:12:59] can't believe it's not born in the USA I can I honestly can because I think that
[01:13:04] born in the USA is like the it's one of the situations where it's like the
[01:13:10] audience's choice versus the critics choice and this is the more critically
[01:13:14] acclaimed of the two all right which leads us to our first Beatles appearance
[01:13:21] here at 21 with revolver which is one of my fate not by number one for sure but
[01:13:27] one of my favorite Beatles releases rivals number one for me I mean Elmore
[01:13:32] Rigby I'm only sleeping yellow submarine good day sunshine I don't yeah it's one
[01:13:38] of my favorites tomorrow never ends tomorrow never ends with that insane
[01:13:43] Ringo Starr drum beat that just continues throughout the whole song and the it's a great
[01:13:48] record this is a top three Beatles album for yes I agree with them then we get at
[01:13:54] 20 pet sounds I mean what what can we say that hasn't already been said in this
[01:13:59] is low for pet sounds this should be in the top 10 this should be arguably top 5
[01:14:04] honestly but I mean it's got we've said before one of the greatest songs ever
[01:14:09] written with God only knows back up though I say it's low because it's always
[01:14:15] in the top five on these sort of list to be honest I mean it has two of the
[01:14:21] greatest songs ever written wouldn't it be nice and God only knows and it's an
[01:14:25] amazing accomplishment but you know as a whole album listening to it it would
[01:14:30] probably it'd be in my personal top 50 I'm just surprised that they put it only
[01:14:35] at 20 it's it's very shocking that it's only a 20 on a list like this for sure
[01:14:40] 19 for Dr. Dre and the chronic I mean another beast of a record I think
[01:14:47] that this is correct I think that this being above NWA and Snoop Dogg is the right
[01:14:52] call this is definitely the best of those three albums that he was involved
[01:14:57] with yeah I mean this is another one where it's like minus the sketches
[01:15:02] throughout it it's a pretty flawless record yeah okay it wouldn't be in my
[01:15:08] top 100 but it's such an iconic album 19 feels high to me but that's fine
[01:15:15] this one feels high to me at 18 we've got Taylor Swift's 1989 Taylor's
[01:15:20] version I love I've never I have not I must admit I haven't listened to the
[01:15:25] Taylor's version release of 1989 but when 1989 came out that's kind of when Taylor
[01:15:31] Swift started to click in my radar because it had songs like Welcome to New
[01:15:37] York and Shake It Off and 22 and Mean and Style and all these other great
[01:15:44] songs Bad Blood was on this too I think so this is our best album this is her
[01:15:50] best album for sure just 18 seems like this is like if this was at like 75 I'd
[01:15:56] be like absolutely 18 feels insanely high to me above the Beach Boys Pet
[01:16:02] Sound and Revolver by the Beatles being pretty lukewarm on Taylor Swift this
[01:16:07] album actually would probably be in my top 200 and yeah this would be the only
[01:16:13] Taylor album in that top 200 I think this is definitely her best album I
[01:16:18] understand why it's here 18 feels high but I wouldn't have been surprised if
[01:16:23] they put it higher to be honest true that's also true here's another one that
[01:16:28] I feel like is insane it's not in the top 10 just based on lists of the past
[01:16:32] at 17 Marvin Gaye's What's Going On love this album I love a great album I would
[01:16:37] it's a great album it'd be in my top a little bit higher it'd be in my top 50
[01:16:40] 17 feels high for me personally but it's classic I don't know the music
[01:16:46] historian in me feels like this is low but yeah I mean this would be in my top
[01:16:49] 100 personal favorites but much lower but I don't know it's it's tough because
[01:16:54] you never know like well what is what is the list specifically trying to say
[01:16:58] Joni Mitchell blue never got into Joni Mitchell the way I need it I feel like
[01:17:03] I need to but I mean I know that this is an album that many people would put as
[01:17:08] the number one album of all time I hear that brought up frequently so 16 feels
[01:17:13] about right for a list like this this is kind of a shocking one to me just for
[01:17:18] being this high at 15 Adele 21 I think you're more the Adele person that am I
[01:17:25] I don't wouldn't be in my top 500 albums I don't like Adele at all that role
[01:17:30] save I'm in the same boat so okay sure I mean this this should I mean I
[01:17:35] understand she's tons of people like her but it's just not my thing at all
[01:17:41] all right number 14 we've got Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan I feel like
[01:17:48] I remember this being I mean I know that this is one of his important ones I feel
[01:17:52] like I remember this being like a rolling stone is on this album yeah which
[01:17:55] is why I yeah yeah I've listened to this it's good I'm not I'm not a Dylan guy
[01:18:03] I respect obviously I respect him but I wouldn't be obviously wouldn't be in my
[01:18:08] top 100 I wouldn't have even known that this was the album that Bob Dylan fans
[01:18:13] would put high I don't know not not on mine but Bob Dylan school yeah I think
[01:18:18] we're like hitting that point where in most lists these are just like a
[01:18:21] rotation of the same tracks which is why Jay-Z blueprint at 13 feels so
[01:18:26] shocking to me it's a good album but like for a list of this kind this must
[01:18:32] be the highest that this has ever been ranked to in a general best albums of
[01:18:37] all time list I just don't understand like is oh H2 the is oh is on this album
[01:18:43] but you're telling me that you you're gonna put this you're gonna put this
[01:18:48] at 13 and not put the black album even on this list yeah the black album I
[01:18:52] think is his best work yeah without competition this is bullshit yeah
[01:18:57] that's a bad call all right I thought that we were only getting one from them
[01:19:02] so I'm excited to see that okay computer from Radiohead it does make an
[01:19:05] appearance on here at number 12 definitely could see this being in the
[01:19:10] conversation for best albums of the 90s at number 12 probably even higher than
[01:19:15] that 12 on best albums of all time I still think it should be in the top 20
[01:19:19] but 12 feels real real fucking high it does feel really high I mean paranoid
[01:19:23] Android is awesome Karma police is awesome but you know this is like my
[01:19:28] third favorite Radiohead album so I don't know 12 feels high 12 feels this
[01:19:33] wouldn't be in my top 100 even though I like a couple songs yeah all right and
[01:19:37] just missing the top 10 rumors from Fleetwood Mac I mean this is a beast of
[01:19:42] a record as well it's practically every single track is a hit yeah and I love I
[01:19:47] dove into this fairly late like maybe like five or six years ago I really dove
[01:19:52] into Fleetwood Mac this is without a doubt their best record and I mean this
[01:19:58] would be in my top 100 if I was doing a list like this specifically where you're
[01:20:03] ranking best albums of all time and not personal favorites yeah this would be in
[01:20:07] the top 20 for sure this feels low for this actually and that's I'm shocked
[01:20:12] that this didn't make the top 10 it must it would be in my top one 100 somewhere
[01:20:16] for sure it would be on my list well surely whatever is at number 10 must be
[01:20:20] like a absolute classic massive record we have lemonade from Beyonce at number
[01:20:28] 10 which is a fine record but again when you go from Fleetwood Mac rumors that's
[01:20:33] like an undeniable masterpiece in every way imaginable putting a lemonade above
[01:20:39] it feels weird it's dumb it's not a good call at all I mean I like lemonade I
[01:20:45] really like the song formation I love that it was like I like the video aspect
[01:20:50] of this album every song had a video I don't love all the songs I'll tell you
[01:20:55] that right now but 10 that's so high for this that's so really really really
[01:21:02] that's way too high for this wouldn't be on my top 100 so number 9 we have
[01:21:09] nevermind from Nirvana I mean I'm an in utero over nevermind person myself but
[01:21:15] I get it this is the iconic record this is the one that should be in there the
[01:21:19] fact that in utero is not anywhere on this 100 list seems strange to me but
[01:21:24] like some British band that I've never heard of is hanging out in the top in
[01:21:29] the in the bottom 80 like is weird but I mean this is there's talk about like
[01:21:36] not a skippable track to be found like nevermind is pretty pretty beastly I'm
[01:21:41] surprised it's this low actually it would be in my top 30 probably of all
[01:21:46] time yeah nevermind rules all right at number 8 Amy Winehouse back back to
[01:21:53] black which the movie of the same name got released with almost no one really
[01:21:58] saying anything about it so I don't I heard it's not very good yeah I don't
[01:22:01] imagine it was but I mean this is a really good album this is amazing this
[01:22:06] is I think 8 is super high for it but it should be on a 100 list it's in my top
[01:22:12] 30 as well I mean I I love this album I love her yeah I got no issues with this
[01:22:19] being at 8 I like that it's at 8 and I like that this is at 7 Kendrick Lamar's
[01:22:25] good kid mad city just an absolute insanely good record probably not the
[01:22:35] right Kendrick album I think people would say to pimp a butterfly yeah but
[01:22:39] but like Kendrick just being represented at all I support I do too but to pimp a
[01:22:44] butterfly is the album man yeah it's this is where we're getting like weird
[01:22:49] calls left and right I think on on these although I don't disagree with this
[01:22:54] number six songs in the key of life we already mentioned it earlier Stevie
[01:22:57] Wonder this is Stevie's best release this is yeah this should a thousand
[01:23:01] percent be in a top 10 of a list of this sort so yeah that would that albums in
[01:23:06] my top 20 for sure I saw him perform it live before absolutely should be there
[01:23:11] nice this feels weird to me number five Frank Ocean blonde never really got
[01:23:18] into Frank Ocean don't even get it from like a culturally significant stance
[01:23:25] really like like sure if you wanted to put Frank Ocean in the top 100 I would
[01:23:30] be like sure but me up five let me let me stop you for a second okay I love
[01:23:37] this album I love the song nights I love solo white Ferrari self-control
[01:23:43] this album is a real journey and it is incredible but his album before this
[01:23:49] channel orange is a better album and one of my all-time favorites channel
[01:23:55] orange I could easily on my personal list I could put channel orange at
[01:24:00] number five on my top 100 definitely in my top 10 easily in my top 10 but
[01:24:06] putting blonde here in my top 100 blonde would probably be like number 90
[01:24:12] and channel orange would probably be number five okay let's see I don't think
[01:24:17] we have any more big surprises from here on out really purple rain Prince in the
[01:24:22] Revolution this was the album I was thinking of when I said was sign of the
[01:24:26] times hopefully that's not the only yeah Prince representation I mean this is
[01:24:31] it's like nine tracks I think and all nine of them are just incredible it's a
[01:24:35] greatest hits album it's let's go crazy darling Nikki when doves cry I would die
[01:24:40] for you purple rain it is a stacked album yeah it's a for me personally it's
[01:24:47] a top 40 album but any list like this yeah it should be in the top 10 number
[01:24:52] four seems like a nice place for it so at number three we have Abbey Road from
[01:24:58] the Beatles which I don't have a problem with I like the album Abbey Road
[01:25:02] I think what my problem is is that we only have two Beatles albums on this
[01:25:07] entire list and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band isn't one of them how
[01:25:11] funny is it that on like a list all the time they always have Sgt. Peppers as
[01:25:15] the number one album of all time and it's not even on this top 100 not even on
[01:25:20] it at all and Abbey Road is here which has come together here comes to sign
[01:25:25] something Golden Slumbers it's a great album there's a lot of great songs on
[01:25:29] this this would also be in my top three favorite Beatles albums but like the
[01:25:34] fact that it's more what's not here than this being here yeah yeah I'm okay with
[01:25:40] it it's fine all right number two Michael Jackson Thriller again it's duh
[01:25:47] of course it's I've actually started to come around to leaning more towards bad
[01:25:54] over thriller as like a better overall album I think that the I think the
[01:26:00] second half of Thriller loses a little bit of steam compared to bad but I don't
[01:26:06] know are you going to check with the track list yeah I'm looking at the track
[01:26:09] listing to see if I should say that's outrageous because that's how every song
[01:26:13] on here is a hit what's the back half of this dude PYT is on the back half of
[01:26:20] this what are you talking about or wait I'm just saying all right so let's look
[01:26:24] at the track list of bed though right so you've got bad the way you make me feel
[01:26:27] speed demon man in the mirror dirty Diana and smooth criminal and leave me alone
[01:26:33] like that's that's a pretty stacked record as well you're talking about the
[01:26:37] back half of Thriller is beat it Billie Jean human nature PYT and then some
[01:26:44] other song the lady in my life but you're telling me that it starts to you
[01:26:48] that the back half of this starts to slow down with for you and it's beat it
[01:26:51] Billie Jean human nature and PYT get the fuck out of here maybe I'm sorry I
[01:26:57] thought I thought baby be mine and the girl is mine was towards the back those
[01:27:01] are in the those are on side yeah those are in the front half so yeah I mean
[01:27:05] there's I'm just saying it's not a flawless record I think the girl is mine
[01:27:09] is just an okay song I think baby be mine is just an okay song and lady in my
[01:27:13] life I don't think anyone really remembers that it's a track okay I'll
[01:27:17] give you that I'll give you that and then number one I mean I I don't know
[01:27:23] how I feel about this so the miseducation of Lauryn Hill from Lauryn Hill I
[01:27:27] think that this is a great album I think this is a definitely in the
[01:27:32] conversation of top 20 or even top 10 number one feels high number one and
[01:27:40] dude this is coming from a guy who X factor is easily one of my favorite
[01:27:46] songs of all time if not my favorite song of all time I've definitely said
[01:27:51] before that X factor is my favorite song of all time it might be and I own a
[01:27:56] t-shirt of this album cover like I love this album and I've seen articles in the
[01:28:02] past talking about how you know this one album of the year at the Grammys and
[01:28:06] people being like oh that was that was wrong they were off on that one and me
[01:28:10] me being defensive of it but I will agree number one does feel high for this
[01:28:18] but I think the thing about it is the album sounds and feels timeless like you
[01:28:24] put it on now and it still feels just like it did back then so yeah man I'm I
[01:28:31] actually think it's pretty cool that they made that number one I like that I
[01:28:35] mean I think it's achieving what they wanted it to do which is like it's gonna
[01:28:38] get people talking got us real quick it certainly got us talking for an hour and
[01:28:43] a half the longest thing I think we'll ever release on the one hit thunder do
[01:28:48] you think there's any snubs Matt did any instant snubs come to your mind I mean
[01:28:52] I said a few of them like I can't believe Sgt. Pepper is not on there I can't
[01:28:56] believe in utero isn't in there actually like I said the fact that like Green Day
[01:29:01] Dookie isn't on there or really any punk albums but London Calling like no Ramones
[01:29:07] like no like rocket to Russia from the Ramones feels like a miss I think for
[01:29:13] the most part the rap albums they got right I don't there's no one where I'm
[01:29:18] like how could this if nothing else how could this artist not be represented in
[01:29:22] some way yeah I think they got all the big ones there I same with the classic
[01:29:27] rock I think they got most of the right classic rock people in the right classic
[01:29:31] rock songs I as we were going every time I thought of one I put it down whether
[01:29:37] it was what there I know some of these are ones that would just be on my 100
[01:29:42] like for example like Boney Bear 22 a million I think that's top five album
[01:29:46] ever for me obviously August and everything after for me you know yeah I
[01:29:51] mean that's one that definitely I mean here's something that's weird to think
[01:29:55] about I know it's not like our number one group for either one of us but like
[01:30:00] no Van Halen on there feels really weird because like usually their self titled
[01:30:05] and 1984 are both pretty high ranking and like greatest albums of all times
[01:30:11] also what about no Pearl Jam no I'm gonna say grunge is very underrepresented
[01:30:18] on this list no Pearl Jam no Stone Temple Pilots like bands that really no
[01:30:24] Smashing Pumpkins like Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness or Siamese Dream
[01:30:28] like surprising I like I knew that Jimmy World Clarity wasn't gonna be on
[01:30:33] there because that's how but still get up like something right home about which
[01:30:36] I think is I mean but hey no Simon and Garfunkel on there that's pretty
[01:30:41] sure I'm like scrolling through like what are some of my favorite albums of
[01:30:45] all time just to kind of see like what I think should be on there that that's
[01:30:50] not like I wanted Ben Folds five whatever and ever amen to be represented
[01:30:55] that's a good call because Ben Folds five whatever and ever amen if I was
[01:30:59] making my personal list I would really fight for that to be in like the top 20
[01:31:05] top 10 yeah this is more obscure so I don't I understand why it isn't there
[01:31:10] but like eels put out an album called electro shock blues which is just like
[01:31:15] a five out of five perfect record Nora Jones come away with me like the most
[01:31:20] winning it's the album in Grammy history has like no appearance on there which
[01:31:25] is like a little strange because I do think that that record still kind of
[01:31:29] flawless yeah there's just it's it's definitely more of what was missed but
[01:31:35] and also you have to be on say albums and to Radiohead albums on here yeah
[01:31:40] you could have picked one for each of those and then maybe slid in some like
[01:31:46] I really think look I know that it I was the right age for it or whatever but I
[01:31:51] think it holds up dookie not being on there seems crazy to me dookie not being
[01:31:55] on there actually does sound crazy I was also going to say again like there
[01:31:59] there isn't like an exact definition of what this list is supposed to be
[01:32:03] ranking but if it was hypothetically talking about influential it feels like
[01:32:08] something from REM should be on that yeah I should have they really should
[01:32:13] have had an album and automatic for the people maybe you know on that that or
[01:32:20] the one after that with losing my religion like I just thought of another
[01:32:24] one that's not on there Peter Gabriel so is not on there that's that's a big
[01:32:29] miss I'm like scrolling through my list whether you love him or hate him I feel
[01:32:33] like it's kind of weird that there's nothing representing like Dave Matthews
[01:32:37] band or Grateful Dead or anything of that like that just like I feel like not
[01:32:43] representing anything from a genre that is arguably the biggest ticket-selling
[01:32:49] acts in the world feels slightly off hey also I will say nothing at all from what
[01:32:57] I will call our world nothing from like they what people call emo pop punk
[01:33:05] whatever you want to call it nothing I thought for sure there was going to be
[01:33:08] I thought maybe they were going to put like my chemical romance on there or
[01:33:12] something yeah I mean black parade should absolutely like in all saying
[01:33:17] that's in mind it's not even it should be in the bottom 20 it should be
[01:33:21] somewhere on there there's no reason Jimmy world bleed American was a huge
[01:33:25] album several hits that album is perfect front to back I would maybe put clarity
[01:33:31] for it but bleed American that was that's a amazing album it's not on there
[01:33:36] so there's a lot of snubs on that list and I think overall I don't know what do
[01:33:43] you give that list out of 10 I'd give it somewhere in like a B minus C plus B
[01:33:48] minus out of 10 oh sorry out of 10 out of 10 I'd give it like a I mean I guess a
[01:33:54] B minus would put it like a six or a seven you know I mean I give it and hey
[01:34:00] Apple music if you're listening I am an Apple music user I'm not a Spotify guy
[01:34:05] I have an Apple music guy so I feel like I can chime in I give that list like a
[01:34:09] five to be honest I thought here's it was pretty here's another one that I
[01:34:15] think like wildly missing on that list if you're just thinking of like lists
[01:34:21] that we've seen in the past of this like a couple ones that jumped out to me as
[01:34:26] I'm like scrolling here color in the shape from the Foo Fighters is one that
[01:34:30] usually is very beloved we said Dookie but also American Idiot could be in the
[01:34:34] contention for a conversation and like if you're going for more of that indie
[01:34:38] stuff like Neutral Milk Hotel in an aeroplane over the sea is always in that
[01:34:43] conversation is like these incredible records it is a very strange list Chris
[01:34:50] the strangest thing about that list is also for me no weird Al Yankovic on it
[01:34:55] which I'm bringing up because here this is our quick slide into plugs Chris I
[01:34:59] didn't even have time to tell you this just a few minutes before we hit record
[01:35:04] on this I got confirmation that the first ever weird algorithm live panel
[01:35:10] will be happening at San Diego Comic Con now so we're gonna have our own San
[01:35:15] Diego Comic Con panel for weird algorithms so stay tuned for more
[01:35:18] information on that I'm sure to bring it up on here too and just one more album
[01:35:22] that just popped to me System of Down Toxicity like I think that's a pretty
[01:35:26] massive if you're trying to just like I'm a big fan of like a holistic list
[01:35:31] that covers everything genre wise the best that it can like you should cover
[01:35:36] some element of that 2000s metal and that's the best album that came out of
[01:35:41] that Matt but anyway maybe you and I should get together the real best 100
[01:35:47] albums we'll have to argue about what goes where but but we'll do that we've
[01:35:52] got plenty of time in the 48 hours we're going to record a bunch of episodes
[01:35:56] why not let's take three hours to fight over what the 100 greatest albums of
[01:36:00] all time is I'm down for that Chris is there anything that you want to quickly
[01:36:04] promote being that we have no clue when the next one of these bonus episodes
[01:36:07] comes out I mean Punchline's got some shows we do including a massive one in
[01:36:11] Pittsburgh yeah Punchline has some shows coming up in June we are doing some
[01:36:16] shows with the spill canvas will be in Minnesota Chicago Detroit and Columbus
[01:36:21] those are all in June 20 something and on all the all the dates are on our site
[01:36:28] punch line punch lion dot com or you can go to punchline music dot com and then
[01:36:33] if you're from Pittsburgh we are playing what should be our biggest show ever in
