This week, the boys discuss the recent layoffs at Checkr and the launch of connected TV (CTV) and live event ads on LinkedIn. They speculate on Checkr's future and the potential for LinkedIn to tap into the B2B market with video advertising. They also highlight the importance of targeting decision-makers and the challenges of streaming partnerships. In this conversation, Joel and Chad discuss various topics including the potential for LinkedIn to automate job ads on streaming services, the diverging paths of Job.com and Job&Talent, the acquisition of Searchlight by Multiverse, and the partnership between Waymo and UberEats for automated food delivery. They also play a game of 'Who'd You Rather' between Summer and Cariloop. Automation, recruitment, and the future of work ... throw in a fat man in a red suit and you've got Christmas.
[00:00:00] Hide your kids, lock the doors!
[00:00:02] You're listening to HR's most dangerous podcast.
[00:00:05] Chad Soosh and Joel Cheeseman are here to punch the recruiting industry right where it hurts.
[00:00:11] Complete with breaking news, brash opinion and loads of snark.
[00:00:15] Buckle up boys and girls, it's time for the Chad & Cheese Podcasts!
[00:00:19] Ohhhh, yeah.
[00:00:28] Just two gangsters of love speaking on the pompadism of work.
[00:00:33] Hi kids, you're listening to the Chad & Cheese Podcast.
[00:00:36] I'm your co-host Joel Maurice Cheeseman.
[00:00:39] This is Chad 1864 Soosh.
[00:00:42] And on this episode, checking out of Checker, LinkedIn embraces the big screen
[00:00:48] and who'd you rather? Let's do this.
[00:00:52] Chad Okay, okay. Before we get into this, I've got to, I have a question.
[00:00:58] So here in Indiana, I've been trying to mull through this over the last couple of days.
[00:01:02] Here in Indiana, we've had what's called the brain drain, which when people get educated here
[00:01:07] and then they leave. So let's say, you know, we have tons of engineers that are in Purdue.
[00:01:11] Chad Sure. Rose Holman, Purdue.
[00:01:12] Chad Right, they go to Purdue, they get educated, they eject, right?
[00:01:16] They get the fuck out of Indiana, okay?
[00:01:18] And they do for a number of reasons, but the competition for companies to attract great talent
[00:01:24] to a state, economic developments, right?
[00:01:27] And working with state government and working with federal government, I know that is a thing
[00:01:30] they talk about all the time. So set this up.
[00:01:33] This week, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled that a near total abortion ban from 1864
[00:01:42] was enforceable. How do companies doing business in the state of Arizona who are trying their
[00:01:49] damnedest to get the great talent into their companies, into Arizona, into Phoenix, into
[00:01:56] Tempe, into Arizona? How do they deal with this? Because this is going to be a real recruiting
[00:02:02] issue for companies trying to compete for great talent. How do they do it?
[00:02:08] Chad Well, first off, talking about college. College is recruiting students. A lot of students
[00:02:14] have news reports coming out that students don't want to go to schools where abortion
[00:02:19] is quite frankly illegal, not even a gray area. It's just straight up Civil War era laws.
[00:02:25] Chad Think of all the fun that you have in college, right?
[00:02:29] Chad All the dumb fun, all the bad decisions that you make in college and also trying
[00:02:35] to make the plan B pill illegal.
[00:02:39] Chad I don't get it, man.
[00:02:41] Chad Yeah, very confusing. I mean, I think the GOP has to be wondering, be careful what you wish for.
[00:02:47] They've been wishing for a Supreme Court to sort of strike down row for 30, 40, 50 years
[00:02:54] and they've gotten it and they may lose a whole lot of elections because of it.
[00:03:00] Trump is kind of moonwalking this issue, throwing it to the states. People are going to vote on this.
[00:03:06] People are going to vote on this issue like they have in certain states and it's going to be a loser for the GOP.
[00:03:13] But the GOP has made this marriage with the conservative right who support them in terms of canvassing houses
[00:03:23] and voting and money. And so they've made this deal with the devil and now they have to dance with the devil
[00:03:29] and November should be very interesting. The question is does it stay with the states?
[00:03:34] If it does, I think more states than not are going to vote down the laws that are there now.
[00:03:39] Does it go to the federal level which I don't think it will.
[00:03:43] I'm sure a lot of companies wish that it would because it becomes a real game of whack-a-mole
[00:03:48] to say what states are we going to do business in and hire in.
[00:03:52] We've had companies say, hey, we'll ship you to whatever state you want for this healthcare.
[00:03:59] That's a pain in the ass. Companies don't want to do that.
[00:04:02] That's just because they're there already, right?
[00:04:05] They won't put new locations in those states.
[00:04:08] And again, I don't want to get away from...
[00:04:10] This is they're taking the right away from women and that's their decision, a woman's decision.
[00:04:16] And I mean, I don't want to get away from that.
[00:04:18] But as this podcast focuses on business, right?
[00:04:22] The impact for these states, again, they're shooting themselves in the foot.
[00:04:27] I mean, it is... Again, I've been saying for years, we are trying to go back to 1930, right?
[00:04:34] I was wrong. We're trying to go back to the 18 fucking 60s.
[00:04:37] It's quite a dichotomy that you have states that are quote-unquote business friendly.
[00:04:42] Arizona, Texas, Florida, low taxes, low regulation.
[00:04:47] But then you flip the script and say, oh, by the way, abortions illegal in our state.
[00:04:53] Companies have to put their money, their dollars to work and get politicians that are going to make a more friendly environment for recruiting and retaining talent. Period.
[00:05:02] You can't lure me to Texas with low regulations and taxes.
[00:05:06] And then in the back door, tell me like, oh, by the way, women are screwed in this state.
[00:05:11] Yeah, and take your rights away.
[00:05:13] Not that Indiana is any better, okay?
[00:05:16] We're only a fourth into 2024.
[00:05:19] We've got two hundred and some days left till the election. It'll be fun.
[00:05:23] I can't wait to be on the beach.
[00:05:26] Shout out!
[00:05:27] That's true. This is messing with your vibe, man.
[00:05:30] He's killing my Euro vibe, man.
[00:05:32] Chad's had some Euro energy going on and this is not good for any of that.
[00:05:36] So yeah, let's give him some shout-outs.
[00:05:40] All right. Number one, Adam Chambers, one of our favorite guests, one of our favorite firing squads.
[00:05:46] We didn't have video at the time, but my man was in a basement somewhere at his mom's house.
[00:05:52] Maybe I don't know. He had pillows over his head trying to sound as good as possible on the which we gave him.
[00:05:59] I think we both gave him a rousing applause.
[00:06:02] That was a company called Appley Chat, which he pivoted into nurse recruiting.
[00:06:07] He's not the first one to see dollars in healthcare and he made that move.
[00:06:12] We've kind of lived through him. He's from Ireland, Belfast.
[00:06:18] He goes to Mexico. He does salsa dancing with beautiful women in South America.
[00:06:24] He's in Spain.
[00:06:25] Yeah, he's all over the place.
[00:06:27] He finally got married. I don't know if we're plotting that or maybe it's a sad note of his single dumb is gone,
[00:06:35] but he obviously met a lot of lucky woman and couldn't be happier for this kid.
[00:06:41] Adam Chambers, man. Good for you. Enjoy life and keep doing what you're doing, man.
[00:06:47] We got to say from those wedding pictures, he's definitely punching up because he did incredibly well.
[00:06:53] So hopefully she probably has a bad-eyed sight. Good luck kids. Good luck kids.
[00:06:58] That's not nice.
[00:07:00] Oh, Adam knows that.
[00:07:02] I know Adam.
[00:07:04] My shout out goes to Shitty Combs departments.
[00:07:07] The following came from an HR leader this week directly connected to us.
[00:07:14] quote, smart recruiters has not announced that change to its customers yet about Rebecca Carr becoming the interim CEO.
[00:07:23] Also, the blue board disappearing act was nuts.
[00:07:28] They never contacted us about them dissolving the company end quote.
[00:07:33] So this is a customer in a leadership position.
[00:07:37] So to all of those vendors out there and Combs departments out there,
[00:07:41] make sure your customer engagement game is tight.
[00:07:45] Okay? Your customers need to know what the fuck's going on.
[00:07:48] Yeah, don't be stupid.
[00:07:49] You are so dumb. You are really dumb.
[00:07:52] All right. My last shout out.
[00:07:55] Seth Godin is a marketing guru, if you will, that I've been following for 20 some years.
[00:08:01] If you ever read Purple Cow, it's a great book to kind of starting out in marketing.
[00:08:06] But anyway, he has launched a few things over the years.
[00:08:09] He actually launched a job site not too long ago and then shut it down eventually if that tells you something about how hard running a job board is and how bad of a business that it is in most cases.
[00:08:21] But he just launched a site called Good Bids.
[00:08:24] There's not really a good marketplace for giving to charity, silent auction kind of thing.
[00:08:30] So he's building kind of a marketplace. They have some really cool bidding items.
[00:08:36] One is have your name in the next John Grisham novel.
[00:08:40] You'll be a character like Chazzo, a character in a novel.
[00:08:44] Oh, that's cool.
[00:08:45] Fight Club movie poster signed. A lot of sports memorabilia.
[00:08:49] And all of that goes to charities that you select the money to go to.
[00:08:54] So Good Bids.org, if you want to check it out, sign up, bid on some cool things.
[00:08:59] I highly recommend that.
[00:09:00] But Seth Godin, good job.
[00:09:02] Shout out to you for creating Good Bids.org.
[00:09:06] Very nice.
[00:09:07] Very nice.
[00:09:08] Very nice.
[00:09:09] Well, they might not be bidding for free stuff, but at ChadCheese.com slash free.
[00:09:13] You get the free stuff.
[00:09:14] Look at that t-shirt Joel Cheeseman's wearing right now.
[00:09:17] Look at it.
[00:09:18] If you're if you're on YouTube, you can see that that is sexy.
[00:09:21] That's some guns in roses.
[00:09:23] Sex appeal right there.
[00:09:25] Brought to you by Aeronap.
[00:09:27] That's right kids.
[00:09:28] Aeronap the referral platform plus free craft beer from our friends at Aspen Tech Labs.
[00:09:35] You could perspective when free beer delivered to your door.

[00:09:58] I can feel it all the way down in my plums.
[00:10:01] That's right Chad.
[00:10:02] A few listeners are celebrating another trip around the sun.
[00:10:05] No wonder if they were in the the trail of totality this past week with the eclipse.
[00:10:09] But but they were celebrating other trip around the sun.

[00:11:47] I know you're excited.

[00:11:49] My wife is super excited too.
[00:11:51] She's like, have you done your will?
[00:11:53] Have you updated the will yet?

[00:12:03] I didn't know who it was.
[00:12:04] Excellent.
[00:12:05] There was no note.
[00:12:06] Just a mysterious cigar bottle.
[00:12:08] I had a note.
[00:12:09] Oh, you had a note.
[00:12:10] You probably threw the note away because you saw the stag.
[00:12:13] Barrel strength bourbon.
[00:12:14] You saw a cigar.
[00:12:15] You saw the Glen Karen glass.
[00:12:17] Did you get did you get a bottle of fire?
[00:12:19] Fireball?
[00:12:20] I didn't get the stag.
[00:12:21] I got a west.
[00:12:23] Many fireball.
[00:12:24] I didn't get a many fireball.
[00:12:26] Is there a story there?
[00:12:27] I got a fireball and I bet the fireball is supposed to keep me warm while we are in Omar's ice castle
[00:12:33] at the minus five bar with Diane and Jane from great people and Omar from John Pixel.

[00:13:38] Love it.
[00:13:39] Dude, Vegas we got a we're getting too old for this shit man.
[00:13:42] We got to pace ourselves a little bit pace ourselves, pace ourselves for yourself
[00:13:47] Mr. I'm ready for this.
[00:13:49] All right.
[00:13:50] Here we go.
[00:13:51] Before we get to the news.
[00:13:52] Yeah, we got some big layoff news.
[00:13:55] Checker.
[00:13:56] Checker has laid off 382 employees due to a slowdown and hiring per the company.
[00:14:04] The layoffs affecting 32% of its workforce aim to improve efficiency.
[00:14:10] There's that word again.
[00:14:11] Amid economic challenges.
[00:14:13] In case you missed it checker services include criminal record checks and identity
[00:14:18] identification with clients like Uber and Netflix.
[00:14:22] The startup not quite a startup anymore but they're valued at $5 billion.
[00:14:26] That was back in 2022.
[00:14:28] They've raised $6709 million in funding.
[00:14:33] Chad, what can only be I guess called a train wreck of sorts?
[00:14:40] What are your thoughts on the news out of checker?
[00:14:43] It seems like they're not going to be the one buying Fama.
[00:14:46] We keep talking about all these background check companies that should be talking to
[00:14:50] Ben Mona's about the buying Fama and really evolving.
[00:14:54] It doesn't look like that's happening here.
[00:14:57] Are we looking at do you think we're looking at just prepping for acquisition and or just
[00:15:03] go IPO?
[00:15:04] Oh, I don't think IPO is anywhere in the future.
[00:15:07] So we've recently talked about the three big companies in this space historically have
[00:15:13] been higher right.
[00:15:15] They were acquired by private equity taken off the public market.
[00:15:18] Off the board.
[00:15:19] Yeah, their valuation from the from the sale was $1.65 billion.
[00:15:24] And then you had Sterling and first advantage merge I guess like it was technically an
[00:15:30] acquisition of first advantage over Sterling that valued the companies at $2.2 billion.
[00:15:37] So basically 2022 investors were wise enough to think that checker was twice as valuable
[00:15:43] as a bigger.
[00:15:45] Yeah, like $5 billion.
[00:15:48] So clearly they weren't going to grow into that valuation so they have to cut costs
[00:15:56] and these which cut costs is I don't know a third of your head count off the books.
[00:16:03] Frankly, now that they've cut they need to grow if they're going to have any hope of getting
[00:16:08] into that valuation.
[00:16:09] So that means I think it's a perfect time to go by Fama like take some of this money
[00:16:14] that you're saving from employees and there are a ton of mom and pop background check companies
[00:16:19] with 2550 100 clients like start buying those companies up start consolidating because
[00:16:26] higher right Sterling all those guys have about 12 to 18 months to figure out
[00:16:32] what the fuck they're doing with private equity and the acquisitions.
[00:16:35] You have a window now and hopefully some money in the bank to go consolidate consolidate
[00:16:41] consolidate and hopefully make the dollars that you're saving worthwhile because that
[00:16:46] valuation is redix makes life hard we've talked about companies raising too much money.
[00:16:52] This is a case where checker raised too much money and now we're seeing the negative
[00:16:57] impacts of that unfortunately for the employees.
[00:17:00] Good luck guys.
[00:17:03] Topics.
[00:17:05] All right.
[00:17:07] LinkedIn has launched connected TV or what the kids call CTV chat ads and live event ads
[00:17:14] aiming to help marketers tap into the growing video consumption trend.
[00:17:19] CTV ads allow marketers to display video campaigns campaigns on home TV sets expanding
[00:17:26] reach beyond the app live event ads promote upcoming LinkedIn events in stream enhancing
[00:17:32] event awareness.
[00:17:33] These initiatives come as LinkedIn seeks to offer more video focused marketing options.
[00:17:39] Chad is LinkedIn listening to our show because we've been recommending and get it
[00:17:44] get more into videos.
[00:17:45] What are your thoughts on the news out of LinkedIn?
[00:17:47] Have we just become best friends?
[00:17:49] So there are two aspects I want to take a look at here and is first and foremost
[00:17:53] platform itself and being able to target on the platform versus streaming right so we'll
[00:17:57] take a look at LinkedIn first.
[00:17:59] So on LinkedIn's post about this move they mentioned quote reach engage decision makers
[00:18:05] to help our customers capture buyers attention and quote now I mentioned last week that
[00:18:11] I thought LinkedIn and their latest moves were going to pivot toward marketing and
[00:18:16] they are knowing that those dollars available in those budgets are much larger but
[00:18:22] they would be in combination with the smaller recruitment advertising budget set.
[00:18:26] I mean they're still going to they're going to have those products available.
[00:18:29] Last week I thought you know they were going to go toward the B2C with the whole avocado
[00:18:35] thing that they've done before but they didn't.
[00:18:38] They're focusing on B2B and once again the quote reach engaged decision makers
[00:18:45] right so why is this smart?
[00:18:47] The transition goes through the roof when companies are selling higher revenue business
[00:18:51] products which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions of dollars per year
[00:18:56] versus the B2C market with avocados Tommy John underwear and meal kits right blue
[00:19:02] apron blue apron meal kits.
[00:19:04] The focus and revenue opportunity is much larger then I want to talk about the other
[00:19:10] aspect of this is the streaming partnerships so let's just take a look at Paramount Plus
[00:19:16] Roku, Samsung and then also Universal Premium Streaming.
[00:19:22] So Paramount Plus I watch Halo, Mayor of Kingston, Kingstown, Tulsa King, Ray Donovan
[00:19:29] they're all shows that I've enjoyed but that seems like a huge separation from the B2B buyers
[00:19:34] on LinkedIn.
[00:19:35] How are they targeting decision makers with streaming?
[00:19:38] The short answer is they aren't so LinkedIn knows who the CEEOs are in the business
[00:19:45] leaders are in their platform but when they start to stream out that's going to be an issue.
[00:19:51] So they try to make these things one right we're going B2B and this is how we're getting
[00:19:57] larger distribution.
[00:19:59] One the value proposition on the LinkedIn side of the house value proposition should
[00:20:04] be much higher because you know you're going to be targeting leaders and people who
[00:20:09] actually make decisions versus the streaming aspect.
[00:20:13] I think it's interesting.
[00:20:15] I think it's definitely a way forward.
[00:20:18] This was, I mean the only LinkedIn news I've been excited about in the very long time.
[00:20:23] Yeah my comment we'll start with...
[00:20:25] They wouldn't just become best friends.
[00:20:31] This is, there's a big if if they can pull this off and you and I both know that
[00:20:39] LinkedIn don't have a great history of pulling things off effectively.
[00:20:43] They don't.
[00:20:44] But there's a lot to be excited about this.
[00:20:47] Retargeting is something that most people, especially on the employment side, don't take
[00:20:52] advantage of.
[00:20:53] People don't understand that you can put like some code on your your ATS and then
[00:20:57] serve ads on Instagram about working at your company.
[00:21:01] Like I know agencies do it but a lot of people just don't understand it.
[00:21:04] So the thought of having placing an ad on LinkedIn and having you know retargeting
[00:21:10] code on your ATS or your side of your company site and then having based on that
[00:21:16] if they can connect.
[00:21:17] I'm on LinkedIn or I go to the website and then I'm connected through my streaming
[00:21:23] service that I'm watching a show and I've been to this site and now I can see
[00:21:27] an ad from that company.
[00:21:29] So think about a job for a second.
[00:21:31] Say I'm really looking.
[00:21:32] Somebody comes to LinkedIn.
[00:21:33] They're looking for sales jobs and the company is posting a sales position and now when
[00:21:39] they post the job it says hey would you like this ad to show up on Tulsa King or
[00:21:44] whatever or properties and and you're targeting this maybe it's his age range
[00:21:49] and this is who watches that show.
[00:21:51] It's I mean the targeting could be really really really interesting.
[00:21:54] Most companies don't have the wherewithal to just say yeah let's put
[00:21:59] a video spot.
[00:22:00] Let's put a commercial on an ad.
[00:22:02] Now what becomes really interesting to me is we've all seen these movies that
[00:22:07] are made on AI where you just say like show me a dog walking through a corn
[00:22:12] field blah blah blah and it literally produces a dog on a on a you know
[00:22:17] walking through a cornfield.
[00:22:18] I don't know how I came up with a dog in the cornfield but anyway
[00:22:21] I'll imagine it saying okay we'll create an ad based on the job
[00:22:28] posting you just put up we have your company logo because that's on your
[00:22:32] profile page.
[00:22:33] We have kind of what you do where you're located etc and take all that data
[00:22:38] and create sort of a template ad or maybe like here are three ads that
[00:22:42] you can show touting the job position that's open at your company and then
[00:22:47] redirect people from that ad to go to LinkedIn and apply to the job.
[00:22:51] That becomes really interesting.
[00:22:54] If you can give a company the power to automate commercials that are
[00:22:59] that look great that are AI produced and automated LinkedIn can make a
[00:23:04] shit ton of money doing like rinsing repeating ads for jobs on these
[00:23:10] stations that people watch and that goes into their open AI
[00:23:14] relationship that goes into their Microsoft stuff.
[00:23:17] Think about targeting though from those ads you could have a
[00:23:20] multiple of ads one could be you know that this person is a black
[00:23:26] female and the target person in the ad is actually a black female right so
[00:23:30] you can see yourself in that ad even more right.
[00:23:34] So you could target those out even better.
[00:23:37] I can't see LinkedIn.
[00:23:39] You can't see them pull this off.
[00:23:43] I think that's a bridge too far for me right.
[00:23:46] I'm just trying to get down to the basics here and I'm having
[00:23:48] problems with them actually getting the basics done.
[00:23:51] But yeah I think it's probably a little bit much.
[00:23:54] That is a future that employers would embrace because everybody
[00:23:58] would love to see their ad on a show that people watch.
[00:24:02] They'd love to see like oh and then see who watched it and how many
[00:24:05] times it was seen and have people actually apply maybe a quick way
[00:24:09] to point LinkedIn, I don't know point your camera and upload.
[00:24:12] I don't know how that would work but easy apply through your
[00:24:14] phone while you're watching TV anyway.
[00:24:16] It's very exciting if they can pull it off and it looks like
[00:24:19] at least from your point of view it's not going to happen in that
[00:24:22] case well it'll just be a big bummer of a news story.
[00:24:30] Sorry to squash those dreams.
[00:24:32] Do it LinkedIn come on baby come on come on make the Kool-Aid
[00:24:36] is getting a little stale and it's starting to taste good again.
[00:24:39] Don't do the easy stuff.
[00:24:41] Okay get over to that guy.
[00:24:43] Alright maybe our next story let's talk tale of two companies.
[00:24:49] First off job and talent Spanish based company whose 2023 revenue
[00:24:55] came in at $450 million with the US becoming the company's
[00:25:00] largest and fastest growing market as well as it's most profitable
[00:25:04] and now for something completely different job.com who's been
[00:25:10] very quietly and whose most newsworthy achievement in 2024 so far
[00:25:15] as a CEO with a 7% 7 not 77% approval rating on Glassdoor
[00:25:23] and you thought Trump and Biden were crushing the favorabilities
[00:25:27] scores with a company rating now much better of 19% approval
[00:25:32] featuring talk of major payroll issues Chad your thoughts
[00:25:38] on these two diverging companies.
[00:25:40] Yeah so I mean they're obviously we could have the leadership
[00:25:44] discussion and probably have a whole fucking podcast around
[00:25:47] that I'm gonna kind of put that to the side and just talk
[00:25:50] about model right it's talk a little bit about the models
[00:25:53] and we actually had Aaron Stewart who is an amazing presenter
[00:25:58] lovely and pitcher that guy if you need somebody to pitch
[00:26:02] for you that guy can pitch but the model when we actually
[00:26:07] he was on he was on stage with us in Austin where I think
[00:26:10] he lives in Texas but he was on stage pitching and I just
[00:26:15] couldn't you loved it to death and I love him but I just
[00:26:18] couldn't get the model I couldn't I couldn't absorb
[00:26:20] what they were gonna try to do because their model at
[00:26:23] job.com was to buy up staffing companies right buy up
[00:26:26] staffing companies and infuse their tech into those
[00:26:30] staffing companies now here's the big problem once
[00:26:33] you start buying staffing companies with a margin of
[00:26:36] 20 plus percent to be able to take that that money down to
[00:26:40] 2% which is what they were talking about is fucking
[00:26:44] ridiculous that's never gonna happen right you have to
[00:26:48] flip it the other way around and you have to become the
[00:26:50] operating system for said staffing companies for for
[00:26:54] the industry so now back to job and talent they have
[00:26:59] done some acquisitions of staffing companies they
[00:27:02] haven't they haven't done as much as job dot or job
[00:27:05] dot com has what they have done is they have created an
[00:27:10] operating system for staffing companies and what does
[00:27:14] that mean very simply there shouldn't be somebody on a
[00:27:18] phone every day talking to somebody about coming in
[00:27:21] for a warehouse fucking position right those
[00:27:24] positions should be on an app that are automatically
[00:27:27] targeting individuals who have those skills right and
[00:27:31] in job and talent it's very simple you go in you answer
[00:27:34] a few questions well first off you can take a look at all
[00:27:37] the jobs that are available in your area right you can
[00:27:39] click the one that you want you can ask a few questions
[00:27:42] you can get the job right then you get the job
[00:27:45] right then okay now this job could be a shift or it
[00:27:49] could be the job itself and that's the beauty about
[00:27:52] this whole market is that if I'm already working at
[00:27:55] Amazon but yet I want to pick up a shift at another
[00:27:58] warehouse or something like that I can go in job and
[00:28:01] talent I can make a little side hustle cash right if
[00:28:04] I'm a nurse and I want to pick up a little bit more
[00:28:07] cash although you know everybody's you know everything
[00:28:10] the schedules are full at the hospital that I work with
[00:28:13] or the clinic that I work with I can look at another
[00:28:16] one that's in the next you know city or country
[00:28:19] or county but not country county close to me and
[00:28:22] I can go in and I can do that this is where this
[00:28:25] is where work is moving from a shift standpoint
[00:28:28] right and the problem is job.com
[00:28:32] they couldn't make that happen because of the
[00:28:37] revenue models 20% to 2% right job and talent
[00:28:41] who's coming from Europe is smashing them
[00:28:45] smashing them and how many companies come to the
[00:28:49] US and smash it not many not very many it
[00:28:53] typically doesn't work out very well Chad 60% of the
[00:28:56] time it works every time by the way if I was going
[00:29:00] to tell you you have the choice of picking job.com
[00:29:04] or job and talent with an ampersand in between
[00:29:07] the two which do you think will be the more successful
[00:29:09] company you would automatically think job.com
[00:29:12] would look tell me if you've heard this story
[00:29:14] before cool name colorful founder pets.com
[00:29:19] like
[00:29:22] jobster those are remember jobster very colorful
[00:29:25] yeah little more abrasive Jason much like Aaron
[00:29:29] yes but a carnival Barker I think you've called both
[00:29:32] of them at some point great sales guys
[00:29:36] big personalities little bit of direction
[00:29:40] challenge with both what are we going to be when
[00:29:43] we grow up if you remember job.com had some credit
[00:29:47] card thing that they gave like it was really confusing
[00:29:51] and they pivoted to people yeah they paid it through
[00:29:54] the credit card right and job and talent what do you do
[00:29:57] you pay through the app yeah yeah credit card versus
[00:30:00] that very apropos comparison there so and then
[00:30:04] to go into the other you know Jason Goldberg
[00:30:07] jobster was lucky enough to not have glass door
[00:30:10] when he was apparently threatening people and I
[00:30:14] was covering this when I was blogging back in the day
[00:30:17] they had a amazing team I can't say that job.com
[00:30:20] has an amazing team because I don't know most of them
[00:30:23] but yeah poorly received CEO people aren't happy
[00:30:28] there were probably issues with paying people
[00:30:31] at jobster what's good like layoffs things like
[00:30:34] that now if you look at job.com's insights
[00:30:38] like headcount is remain pretty steady my guess
[00:30:41] is that's because of the acquisitions they keep adding
[00:30:44] headcount by buying these companies but there's
[00:30:47] clearly trouble in the house and when you have
[00:30:50] trouble in the house like it just spills over
[00:30:53] into everything job and talent regardless of the
[00:30:56] name has somehow figured out the sauce of ease
[00:31:01] of use you know young people understand this
[00:31:04] is the way that I want to work give me my phone
[00:31:07] let me apply let me work get paid through that
[00:31:09] and that just seems to work where people like
[00:31:12] snap snag a job snag not snap snag a job
[00:31:15] they were going to try this a few others so
[00:31:18] yeah tell it to companies I mean if you look inside
[00:31:21] management it just seems to be a mess at job.com
[00:31:24] which is unfortunate we both like Aaron a lot
[00:31:26] I don't know what's going on there we haven't heard from them in a long time
[00:31:29] where we used to hear from them all the time about what's going on let me tell you
[00:31:32] about what we're doing they're very very quiet
[00:31:35] and then we have this company come out of Spain and just kick an ass
[00:31:38] and showing a lot of companies how it's done
[00:31:41] I'm wondering how like a job case is looking at
[00:31:44] job and talent success and saying where did we
[00:31:47] where can we catch this lightning how to
[00:31:50] because they have a lot of users and I don't know
[00:31:53] yeah how they're monetizing it but
[00:31:55] yes might want to look at at job and talent
[00:31:58] and how do we change our model into something more
[00:32:01] job and talent might want to look at job case from an acquisition
[00:32:04] standpoint because of the size right they've raised a billion
[00:32:08] three yeah the staffing the staffing
[00:32:11] industry in the U.S. alone is two hundred
[00:32:14] and eighteen billion dollars
[00:32:16] billion dollars so the ability
[00:32:19] for a job and talent to buy into a job
[00:32:22] case that has a humongous fucking community already
[00:32:25] I think that's a very good call
[00:32:27] achievement that could be interesting yeah well thank you
[00:32:30] thank you do you like that one better than steps on buying career builder
[00:32:33] oh yes yeah they did this one makes sense
[00:32:36] this one makes sense yeah
[00:32:38] doesn't anyone notice this I feel like I'm taking crazy pills
[00:32:44] alright Chad I first read this as a Marvel story
[00:32:48] when it said multiverse but no no it's not
[00:32:51] it's not a Marvel story London based multiverse
[00:32:54] which claims to deliver a new kind of
[00:32:57] apprenticeship that combines education work and technology
[00:33:00] has acquired sand friend based search light
[00:33:03] which says it provides a bias free
[00:33:06] AI that filters top applicants by
[00:33:09] relevant work experience hard skills and soft
[00:33:12] skills terms were not disclosed search light had previously raised
[00:33:16] nineteen point five million dollars and employs
[00:33:19] sixteen people while multiverse has raised four hundred and eighteen
[00:33:23] million dollars and employs a little over one thousand folks
[00:33:27] Chad your thoughts on the multiverse search light deal
[00:33:30] yeah I see this much like work days acquisition of
[00:33:33] hired score work day had a fucking clue
[00:33:37] about AI and training large language models which means
[00:33:40] they didn't know how to explain and or defend them
[00:33:44] Athena and the team at higher score lived
[00:33:47] and breathed it so the tech in the acquisition made sense
[00:33:51] in this case multiverse fills a gap with the search light
[00:33:55] acquisition in the same way multiverse gains a platform geared
[00:33:59] toward I O science culture data hiring
[00:34:02] outcomes basic auditing and they've got a ton of integrations
[00:34:05] with different different applicants are acting system
[00:34:08] platforms that are out there I know trying to go out
[00:34:12] and actually hire individuals to build something like this
[00:34:15] for a platform that is going to take a very long time
[00:34:19] and I have a lot of money this is a shortcut for them
[00:34:24] not just from standpoint of a tech from a tech standpoint
[00:34:27] but also from a people standpoint from an expertise
[00:34:31] in house standpoint to me this makes a hell of a lot of
[00:34:35] sense and since last November during multiverse layoffs
[00:34:39] they laid off about 30 people founder you and Blair
[00:34:42] that's right Tony Blair's kid stated that the U.S.
[00:34:46] business didn't meet revenue targets and required too much
[00:34:49] financial investment and that multiverse would have to
[00:34:53] focus on a more tailored approach in specific
[00:34:57] sectors for the U.S. market which is what we talk about
[00:35:00] on every show just about right almost weekly
[00:35:04] targeted sector knock out of the park then expand
[00:35:08] now they're feeding their data into searchlight
[00:35:12] to accelerate that process in scale in those targeted
[00:35:16] sectors meaning they can expand much faster so again
[00:35:20] if you take a more focused approach how do you get to
[00:35:24] expansion faster this is how you do it right you expand
[00:35:27] within that sector first and then you explode out this is
[00:35:30] I think a smart a smart acquisition for them and
[00:35:34] necessary another one so you you stole a lot of my
[00:35:37] thunder on this one particularly the particular Tony Blair
[00:35:41] relationship or relation there I was hoping that you
[00:35:44] would mention that so I could I could drop that one I
[00:35:47] could not that although the searchlight founders are
[00:35:51] twins so you didn't mention that so I will mention that
[00:35:54] they're twin twin twin ladies it was kind of eerie
[00:35:58] looking at that was saying it did a is that an
[00:36:00] AI thing or no no actually there will be a founding
[00:36:03] team of AI that's a billion dollar company one day
[00:36:07] I've heard that on on a podcast somewhere the one
[00:36:10] thing for me is that multiverse has been around
[00:36:13] they've been there they're on your eight been they've
[00:36:15] been around for a while they're not profitable the
[00:36:18] US I don't think is going the way that they had
[00:36:21] hope that it would and they should be killing it
[00:36:23] I mean apprenticeships and and that business should
[00:36:26] be doing very very well so someone said I'm sure
[00:36:31] let's get some tech in here let's get some people
[00:36:33] who know tech not just Tony Blair's is it his son
[00:36:37] his son kid kid yeah just okay you've got a famous
[00:36:41] guy now we need people who know what they're doing
[00:36:43] so both founders are going to be in executive
[00:36:47] positions with the company which means they'll be
[00:36:50] helping drive the ship which I think is good
[00:36:52] they're not like leaving it sounds like they're
[00:36:54] gonna be in it at least you know for the next
[00:36:56] year so lock them in yeah so lock them in if
[00:36:59] they can bring people that know what they're
[00:37:01] doing bring San Francisco talent and Silicon
[00:37:04] Valley folks into this company that has raised
[00:37:06] a ton of money they were unicorn at one point
[00:37:09] I don't know if they still are but you have a
[00:37:11] lot of money of a high profile founder now
[00:37:13] you have technology you have people that know
[00:37:15] what's doing there you have a white their white
[00:37:17] combinator darling actually some of the new
[00:37:20] stories that I read so yes it'll make sense
[00:37:24] I mean the apprenticeship thing with high tech
[00:37:26] stuff there may be some some growing pains
[00:37:28] there but I think ultimately this is a this
[00:37:31] is this is a much better chance of succeeding
[00:37:34] than work day sucking up a company like
[00:37:37] hired scored I give this a lot better
[00:37:40] chances of success because you don't have a
[00:37:43] work day bureaucracy to deal with multi
[00:37:46] versus still a fairly flexible small company
[00:37:49] in relation to work day totally agree
[00:37:52] totally agree all right let's get to one of
[00:37:55] my favorite games I think it's one of your
[00:37:57] favorite games as well 2 a.m. in the bar
[00:38:00] who'd you rather everybody here we go
[00:38:03] alright here's how we play we talk about
[00:38:05] the company startups that have recently
[00:38:07] gotten funding and Chad and I choose
[00:38:09] who we'd rather let's play first up
[00:38:13] we've got New York City based summer
[00:38:16] workplace student loan solution provider
[00:38:19] they've raised nine million dollars in
[00:38:21] funding led by rebalance capital and
[00:38:24] Semper virus the funds will be used to
[00:38:27] expand the team and enhance the
[00:38:29] technology summer partners with employers
[00:38:32] to provide student loan and education
[00:38:34] assistant benefits that is summer and
[00:38:37] corner number one corner number two we
[00:38:40] have carry loop a Richardson Texas based
[00:38:44] provider of a caregiver support platform
[00:38:47] they've raised 20 million dollars in series
[00:38:49] C funding the company helps families
[00:38:51] manage their care needs by connecting
[00:38:53] them to an employer sponsored solution
[00:38:56] carry loop coaches provide professional
[00:38:59] support while its digital platform
[00:39:01] offers resources and tools to support
[00:39:04] caregiving Chad that is carry loop and
[00:39:06] summer who'd you rather
[00:39:09] I'll start with carry loop so 43 million
[00:39:12] total funding and have been around for
[00:39:14] 12 years they've created a marketplace
[00:39:16] for caregivers with a concierge service
[00:39:19] built in and since most people have no
[00:39:22] clue what fucking services are available
[00:39:24] let alone which ones that would fit
[00:39:27] for them and their needs carry loop
[00:39:30] could be pretty much the technical
[00:39:32] infrastructure and operating system for
[00:39:34] partners and healthcare solutions
[00:39:36] nationwide on the other hand summer the
[00:39:39] only student repayment solution as a
[00:39:41] benefit I want to hear about is how
[00:39:43] companies can take on the burden
[00:39:45] themselves I'm not interested in
[00:39:47] another scheme that puts a new shade
[00:39:49] of lipstick on the fucking corporate
[00:39:51] welfare pig so it's 2 a.m. in the
[00:39:53] morning in the club it's bumping who
[00:39:55] would I'd rather I'd rather carry
[00:39:57] loop what are you doing
[00:39:59] so both of these hit home
[00:40:03] for me I had student debt
[00:40:06] and I have parents that I could
[00:40:09] help give care to so yeah the
[00:40:12] question for me is who partly
[00:40:15] is who's in office because Biden is
[00:40:17] really good about excusing student
[00:40:18] loans and if that trend continues
[00:40:20] we may not have a need for a company
[00:40:22] called summer because no one will
[00:40:24] have student debt no we will have
[00:40:26] student debt but yes I want to hear
[00:40:28] about tax benefits for companies
[00:40:31] that pay off student loans or maybe
[00:40:33] match student loan payments like
[00:40:35] let's get creative around this folks
[00:40:37] like also on the other end of like
[00:40:40] not like reducing the cost of college
[00:40:42] that's a bigger question than like
[00:40:44] I think corporate corporate
[00:40:46] initiatives but let's have something
[00:40:48] that incentivizes a company to like
[00:40:50] help pay off student debt for their
[00:40:52] employees to me that is more exciting
[00:40:54] than let's just hire a company or buy
[00:40:56] a solution that people can then
[00:40:58] access and hopefully help pay down
[00:41:01] stuff now on the care stuff
[00:41:03] baby boomers 77 million people 10,000
[00:41:06] people a day are retiring that means
[00:41:08] sickness that means care that means
[00:41:11] assisted living that means hospice
[00:41:14] like these are real issues for me
[00:41:17] yes so I know they're big issues
[00:41:19] of other people and that also I
[00:41:21] think you could also carry in
[00:41:23] child just childcare come into this
[00:41:25] I don't know but definitely on the
[00:41:27] aging parent thing what I like to
[00:41:29] hire professionals to help me through
[00:41:31] that what I like to hire that have
[00:41:33] that benefit as someone who has
[00:41:35] parents to deal with so for me as
[00:41:37] well like I think they both deserve
[00:41:39] some applause but yeah maybe it's
[00:41:41] age bias or like where like I
[00:41:43] paid off my student loan 20 years
[00:41:45] ago so I haven't really had to deal
[00:41:47] with that lately whereas I have an
[00:41:49] 84 year old dad so just recency
[00:41:51] I think I'm also picking carry loop
[00:41:54] at the corner of the bar
[00:41:56] stepping on the sticky floor sticky floor
[00:41:59] alright that is another game
[00:42:03] of who'd you rather we're going to take
[00:42:05] a quick break and come back and talk
[00:42:07] a little automation
[00:42:11] alright Chad Waymo and Uber
[00:42:13] technically Uber eats are teaming up
[00:42:15] to launch automated Uber eats in
[00:42:17] Waymo's Phoenix service area customers
[00:42:20] can opt for a robot delivery
[00:42:22] from select merchants though they'll
[00:42:24] need to meet the vehicle outside
[00:42:26] to collect their order no word yet
[00:42:29] if Chipotle is participating in this
[00:42:32] in this test market but
[00:42:35] we'll let you know when we find out
[00:42:37] Chad what are your thoughts on Waymo's
[00:42:39] marriage with Uber eats I think
[00:42:42] Waymo is definitely not
[00:42:44] the product for this I mean they
[00:42:46] they're also partnering with serve
[00:42:48] robotics which is one of those you know
[00:42:50] the smaller
[00:42:52] robots and go down the sidewalk yeah
[00:42:54] see those in cities I don't see
[00:42:56] those like you know in rural areas
[00:42:58] where they can get beat up by you know
[00:43:00] baseball bats and shit like that but
[00:43:02] there's also Nuro and you are
[00:43:05] oh these are autonomous vehicles that
[00:43:08] are really they're built for this
[00:43:11] the Waymo cars are literally just
[00:43:13] built for humans to be inside so
[00:43:15] they're great for taxis but in this
[00:43:17] case I think the Nuro and the
[00:43:20] little sidewalk robot or probably the
[00:43:23] smart way to go and maybe I don't know
[00:43:25] what we'll see some evolution of this
[00:43:27] but I think this is this is really
[00:43:29] interesting the big question is do you
[00:43:31] care because you currently get stuff
[00:43:33] that's delivered to right to your
[00:43:35] doorstep and all you have to do is go
[00:43:37] out somebody delivers it to you take
[00:43:39] it's lovely but this one you got to
[00:43:41] go out to the you got to put your
[00:43:43] shoes on you got to go out to the
[00:43:45] doorstep and you know this sounds
[00:43:47] fucking lazy but you got to do all those
[00:43:49] things open the door it should be in
[00:43:51] the trunk right so they're pop the trunk
[00:43:53] you get the food out of the trunk you
[00:43:55] close the trunk and then you go back
[00:43:57] in is this something that you you
[00:43:59] think you're going to do or you're
[00:44:01] just going to insure I don't have a
[00:44:03] buffet heat light in the trunk if
[00:44:05] they're keeping my food warm or not
[00:44:07] by the way Chad if it's if there's
[00:44:09] a barbacoa bowl in that trunk I'm
[00:44:11] I'm walking through a snake pit and
[00:44:13] to get my barbacoa bowl
[00:44:15] interestingly all Australia
[00:44:17] just yeah and if there's some if
[00:44:19] there's a blooming onion in there god
[00:44:21] damn it I'm fighting off
[00:44:23] I'm fighting off Vikings
[00:44:25] and Roman soldiers
[00:44:27] but we're going to be in
[00:44:29] Phoenix next week for the
[00:44:31] the paradox analyst meeting
[00:44:33] and and I'm going to try
[00:44:35] this out I'm going to download Waymo
[00:44:37] I'm gonna be like take me to in and out
[00:44:39] so I'm gonna try the taxi service
[00:44:41] out the people have
[00:44:43] tried it that I've talked to really
[00:44:45] love it oh yeah so
[00:44:47] why not deliver food as part
[00:44:49] of all you've already downloaded the app is our
[00:44:51] YouTube viewers can see
[00:44:53] check that out at youtube.com
[00:44:55] slash at Chad cheese anyway
[00:44:57] I'm a fan dude now I feel
[00:44:59] I feel kind of bad
[00:45:01] so now there's an employee that's going to have to go
[00:45:03] take the food out to the car
[00:45:05] whereas today like door dash goes
[00:45:07] into the restaurant and then takes
[00:45:09] so some to pick it up some poor slob
[00:45:11] flipping burgers is going to have to
[00:45:13] go out to the way
[00:45:15] mo and put the food in
[00:45:17] and then say like go and then yes
[00:45:19] I'm gonna have to go get it now the good thing
[00:45:21] is the tips are refunded
[00:45:23] if you choose the way mo so I think as
[00:45:25] a consumer more people than
[00:45:27] not will choose to have to go out
[00:45:29] to the street then
[00:45:31] pay the tip now that's in my
[00:45:33] suburb area if I live in a
[00:45:35] 50 story building I may not want to go down
[00:45:37] and get my food but for the suburbs baby
[00:45:39] bring my barbaco
[00:45:41] bowl get the buffet heating light
[00:45:43] I'm hungry
[00:45:45] wow
[00:45:47] look at you you made it through an entire
[00:45:49] episode of the Chad and Chase podcast
[00:45:51] or maybe you cheated
[00:45:53] and fast forwarded to the end
[00:45:55] either way there's no doubt
[00:45:57] you wish you had that time back
[00:45:59] valuable time you could
[00:46:01] have used to buy a nutritious meal
[00:46:03] and Taco Bell enjoy
[00:46:05] a pour of your favorite whiskey
[00:46:07] or just watch
[00:46:09] big booty Latinas and bug fights
[00:46:11] on tiktok
[00:46:13] no you hung out with these
[00:46:15] two chuggle heads instead
[00:46:17] now go take a shower
[00:46:19] and wash off all the guilt
[00:46:21] but save some soap because
[00:46:23] you'll be back
[00:46:25] like an awful train wreck
[00:46:27] you can't look away
[00:46:29] and like Chad's favorite western
[00:46:31] you can't quit them
[00:46:33] either
[00:46:35] we out
