[00:00:00] [SPEAKER_00]: And then finally he said Craig, okay we're gonna raise your salary to well above six figures.
[00:00:04] [SPEAKER_00]: And I said, well dreams are overrated.
[00:00:07] [SPEAKER_00]: He looked me directly in the eyes and said, I don't care how much they try to compensate you, your dream is not for sale.
[00:00:13] [SPEAKER_00]: So my advice for people nowadays is, you can't fake out your nerves.

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_02]: In this episode we covered a range of topics covering his journey, how he got into coaching,
[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_02]: what were the moments he felt that it is all worth it to also talking about some of the big misconception people have.
[00:03:23] [SPEAKER_02]: How you can be a better salesperson and also we did a live experiment where he had to choose between
[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_02]: whether you focus on content or you focus on delivery.
[00:03:34] [SPEAKER_02]: This episode of about 30 minutes has the potential to really change your perspective towards speaking and storytelling.
[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_02]: So let's get started, let's welcome Craig.
[00:03:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much Craig, how are you doing?
[00:04:02] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm doing great. Coach, how are you?
[00:04:04] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm doing awesome and I wanted to start by asking you the question which might have been asked to you several times
[00:04:13] [SPEAKER_02]: but I still want to know, we've already had your introduction and we talk about all the great things
[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_02]: but I want to know how did it all start? Where does this Craig Valentine, the Craig Valentine,
[00:04:26] [SPEAKER_02]: what was the journey before that?
[00:04:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Well you might know that when I was 10 years old I had a lisp that was so bad that a man referred to me as Daffy Duck.
[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_00]: And so for years and years I was quiet, I didn't say anything.
[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_00]: And then maybe four or five years after that when I was about 14 or 15 I started forcing myself to work on my speech
[00:04:49] [SPEAKER_00]: and my diction and so forth.
[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_00]: And I always admired people who could speak well and could present well.
[00:04:56] [SPEAKER_00]: And then eventually when I was about 27, 28 I joined Toastmasters International.
[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_00]: And I joined in March of 1998.
[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I got what's called a competent Toastmaster in March of 1999 and I won the world championship in August of 1999
[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_00]: in my very first try.
[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_00]: And Heritages people come up to me all the time, they say well you don't even know what it feels like to lose a contest.
[00:05:22] [SPEAKER_00]: And I have to tell them I do because believe it or not, and this hopefully will give people some hope,
[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I lost the humor speech contest at the club level.
[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: That's the lowest level you can lose.
[00:05:37] [SPEAKER_00]: And I'll never forget a like a seasoned Toastmaster named Alan Mish came up to me afterwards and he said,
[00:05:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Craig you can win the world championship of public speaking.
[00:05:47] [SPEAKER_00]: And Heritages I was like what are you talking about?
[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I just lost the humor speech contest at the lowest level, the club level.
[00:05:52] [SPEAKER_00]: What are you talking about?
[00:05:53] [SPEAKER_00]: He said I don't care.
[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_00]: He said the only thing wrong with your humorous speech was that it wasn't funny.
[00:06:03] [SPEAKER_00]: But Alan Mish is the one who's responsible for talking me into going back and giving it one more shot in the international speech contest.
[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what I did.
[00:06:12] [SPEAKER_00]: And it worked out.
[00:06:13] [SPEAKER_00]: And I won the world championship and I've been speaking professionally.
[00:06:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, I wouldn't say professionally.
[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I've been speaking for the last five years.
[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I've been speaking ever since.
[00:06:23] [SPEAKER_00]: That's how it started.
[00:06:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
[00:06:26] [SPEAKER_02]: And yes, I've heard this story from you many times and every time when you share is like hope for so many of us around the world that yes we can do that.
[00:06:35] [SPEAKER_00]: And you know what the great part about it?
[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Heritages after I won the world championship, I ran into that father who called me Mr. H.
[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I call him Mr. H. He called me Daffy Duck.
[00:06:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I ran into him two months after I won the world championship.
[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_00]: And he didn't even remember calling me Daffy Duck.
[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[00:06:52] [SPEAKER_00]: And so I had some fun with him and I said, you know what?
[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_00]: You don't even remember that?
[00:06:56] [SPEAKER_00]: That's despicable.
[00:06:57] [SPEAKER_00]: And he started laughing.
[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I started laughing.
[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Amazing.
[00:07:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I lost him a couple of years ago, but you know, I appreciated him because he was the one who made me face reality so that I can reform it.
[00:07:10] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's what I try to do with people that I coach get them to face reality of where they are as a presenter so that they can take themselves to the next level.
[00:07:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
[00:07:19] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_02]: We all need some time those disguised angels in our life who can help us go into the path that we are meant to be awesome.
[00:07:28] [SPEAKER_02]: So, so you won the world championship and then few years down the path you also became the full-time professional speaker and trainer and coach.
[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_02]: When was that moment of transformation?
[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_02]: I said yes.
[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_02]: I think I got it.
[00:07:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I should now be speaking full-time.
[00:07:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, well.
[00:07:46] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, that was pretty interesting because you know the story.
[00:07:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I was working for an internet company and I wanted to leave because it was my goal to be a professional speaker and my boss, the vice president said to me, you can't leave.
[00:07:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what he talked about.
[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_00]: He said we're going to raise your salary and he kept raising my salary up and up and up.
[00:08:10] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think what happens with a lot of people, Heritage is they let the good life get in the way of the best one.
[00:08:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I had a good life.
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I had a good job.
[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: They were ready to pay me a lot of money.
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Keep in mind.
[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_00]: This is like the year 2000.
[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_00]: 1990, like 2000.
[00:08:23] [SPEAKER_00]: And we let that good get in the way of the best.
[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_00]: And my wife told me don't let the good get in the way of the best.
[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Your dream is not for sale.
[00:08:29] [SPEAKER_00]: So I went back in there the next day.
[00:08:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I looked at the vice president in his eyes and I told him I said, my wife said my dream is not for sale.
[00:08:38] [SPEAKER_00]: But the bottom line is I left.
[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I left and here's some more hope.
[00:08:43] [SPEAKER_00]: That very year I spoke over a hundred and I think it was 160 times in 44 states and five countries.
[00:08:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Amazing.
[00:08:55] [SPEAKER_00]: In one of my mouth ever since.
[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
[00:08:58] [SPEAKER_02]: So let's talk about you became a full time speaker and trainer and coach.
[00:09:03] [SPEAKER_02]: And as many people as I talked to who are at that level, they always have that one moment which we like this is all worth it.
[00:09:11] [SPEAKER_02]: This is what I have been preparing and I've been doing this.
[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_02]: What was that moment for you when like, yes, this is what I was supposed to do.
[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_00]: So I'm in Cleveland, Ohio.
[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm giving the commencement ceremony to the University of Phoenix.
[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay, University of Phoenix is a little bit different because like the average graduate is like mid 30s.
[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_00]: Right there.
[00:09:33] [SPEAKER_00]: These are people who took a different route.
[00:09:36] [SPEAKER_00]: And so there are probably 4000 people in this.
[00:09:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Orchestra hall.
[00:09:41] [SPEAKER_00]: And before I got up to speak as the people were coming in the graduates were coming in, you could hear their children yelling out things like that's my mama, well that's my daddy.
[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_00]: And it just touched me in such a way that heritage for the first time I'll be honest for the first time.
[00:09:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't think about myself at all when I took the stage.
[00:10:03] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was just poured everything out into them.
[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_00]: And I got up there and it was the greatest engagement I've ever had.
[00:10:11] [SPEAKER_00]: And then when I went and I sat down, I knew something was special about it because when everybody came up to get their degrees, almost all of them walk to the side and just came up and shook my hand.
[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[00:10:25] [SPEAKER_00]: And then just came back and walked in that was like, this is what it's all about.
[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_00]: We took pictures afterwards and with the kids came up to me.
[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_00]: So it was just one of those transformational moments where I realized this is what speaking is really about.
[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not about me.
[00:10:38] [SPEAKER_00]: It's all about them.
[00:10:40] [SPEAKER_00]: And it's even about their future and their kids as well.
[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_02]: So that that was one of those amazing and that's what you always teach it's always what's in it for them, not for me because audience comes first.
[00:10:53] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
[00:10:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because if you really think about it even way back in 1999 when I was going through the contest, every time I would win a contest, they would give me a trophy and they would give me Pats on the back and at a boy great job.
[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_00]: But I remember there was always one guy who would come up to me and he would say, good job.
[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Are you going to win the next one?
[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Hmm.
[00:11:14] [SPEAKER_00]: And I would always say to him, look man, can I just enjoy this one?
[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_00]: He's like, yeah, but are you going to win the next one?
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm going to win the next one.
[00:11:20] [SPEAKER_00]: And I even said to him back in 1999, my statement was, I don't know.
[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I just want to touch lives.
[00:11:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I just want to touch live.
[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Here's the interesting thing, Haritosh.
[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_00]: Every time I reached out my hand to touch a life, somebody put a trophy in it.
[00:11:37] [SPEAKER_00]: But here's what I tell people.
[00:11:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I never reached for the trophy.
[00:11:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I always reached for the life.
[00:11:44] [SPEAKER_00]: So the advice that I try to give people when they're in this business is just asking them a question, which is what are you reaching for?
[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Because if you really reach out there to touch lives, I think you'll be rewarded beyond what you ever imagined.
[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_00]: So that's what it's about.
[00:11:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Awesome.
[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much.
[00:12:01] [SPEAKER_02]: Now let's change gears.
[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_02]: We talked a lot about your journey, your story, but let's talk about what you're expert at.
[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_02]: You are the expert speaker.
[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_02]: You are the expert trainer.
[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_02]: So I want to know what do you think is the biggest misconception when it comes to public speaking and storytelling and all the related, one misconception that you've seen over the years, but still continues for a few decades.
[00:12:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I think it's like I thought when I first got into speaking that was all about memorizing words.
[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[00:12:36] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was so nervous because I was like, if I miss a word, then I'm going to be done.
[00:12:42] [SPEAKER_00]: There's what about do and I realized that it's not about memorizing your speech.
[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_00]: It's about internalizing it.
[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_00]: It's about understanding it idea for idea rather than word for word.
[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_00]: So what I like to get people to do is find a way to tell your story.
[00:12:56] [SPEAKER_00]: If you tell your story, then you're going to remember the point and they're going to remember the point.
[00:13:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Give me a quick example. You know this, but two days after I won the world championship, I'm walking in the Chicago airport.
[00:13:07] [SPEAKER_00]: My wife is on one side of me and I'm carrying this gigantic crystal trophy.
[00:13:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Just walking through the Chicago airport, Chicago Midway Airport, not O'Hare, but Midway Airport.
[00:13:20] [SPEAKER_00]: And people are looking at me like, well, who is that?
[00:13:24] [SPEAKER_00]: And Heritage, you already know, I thought I heard a lady say, is that Denzel Washington?
[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_00]: But this is when I realized my life would never be the same.
[00:13:33] [SPEAKER_00]: This petite lady in a pink dress runs up to me in the middle of the airport and just starts reading the,
[00:13:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm looking at the trophy right now. She starts reading the bottom of my trophy.
[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_00]: And she says, hmm, 1999 world champion of public speaking. Wow. Stay some things.
[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to have a little airport. I'm speechless.
[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_00]: But that's when I realized no matter where I go in life,
[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_00]: people are going to say what you mind saying some things.
[00:14:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So I came to the fundamental understanding about my life and really about any speaker's life, any presenter's life.
[00:14:09] [SPEAKER_00]: I can no longer get ready to speak. I have to stay ready to speak.
[00:14:13] [SPEAKER_00]: My motto is don't get ready. Stay ready.
[00:14:15] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you have a collection of your own stories and you have a collection of what I call foundational phrases,
[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_00]: you are always ready to speak.
[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what questions you're going to ask me, Heritage, but I'm ready.
[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Right? Because I got a story for pretty much probably any question you asked.
[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_00]: You even talked about coaching. When you brought up coaching, it brought up a story for me.
[00:14:38] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, here I am. I just won the world championship of public speaking in 1999.
[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I get a call from a guy who says, Craig, my name is Wade Randolph.
[00:14:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I'd like you to coach me on my speech.
[00:14:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I said, Wade, I'm just a speaker. I'm not a speech coach. I wouldn't even know where to start.
[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_00]: He said, I'll pay you. I said, that's a good place to start.
[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_00]: So I start coaching Wade. I have no idea what I'm doing.
[00:15:01] [SPEAKER_00]: But for some reason, Wade keeps coming back.
[00:15:04] [SPEAKER_00]: And the more he comes back, I keep finding out more ways to help him.
[00:15:07] [SPEAKER_00]: And then all of a sudden the word spread. Hey, Craig Valentine is a coach.
[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_00]: So I got more clients. I started finding out more ways to help them.
[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_00]: But it wasn't until I had a conversation with my good friend Darren LaCroix,
[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_00]: who was the 2001 world champion of public speaking.
[00:15:20] [SPEAKER_00]: He said, Craig, once you realize that you are actually also a speech coach,
[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_00]: things are going to open up for you.
[00:15:26] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's exactly what happened.
[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_00]: So my advice for people nowadays is jump into what you fall into.
[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[00:15:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Because there was a reason you fell.
[00:15:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Jump into what?
[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_00]: So when I actually jumped into speech coaching with my full body and mind and spirit,
[00:15:43] [SPEAKER_00]: man, I was able to touch more lives.
[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: So jump into what you fall into.
[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: And tell your story.
[00:15:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing, amazing.
[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_02]: And you know, you would have heard this from hundreds of your fellow students,
[00:15:56] [SPEAKER_02]: but you live in our heads.
[00:15:58] [SPEAKER_02]: So every time I'm speaking to somebody, he said, yeah, I need to get ready.
[00:16:03] [SPEAKER_02]: I need to have a lot of content and say, you know what?
[00:16:06] [SPEAKER_02]: My coach Craig says, don't get ready.
[00:16:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Stay ready.
[00:16:09] [SPEAKER_02]: Say yes and then figure it out.
[00:16:11] [SPEAKER_02]: And now I've got a new one as well.
[00:16:12] [SPEAKER_02]: So thank you so much.
[00:16:14] [SPEAKER_02]: This is such an honor to have you.
[00:16:16] [SPEAKER_02]: And my major, this podcast is called Confidence Storytelling Podcast.
[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And you brought up the importance of storytelling.
[00:16:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, and you know what else?
[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_00]: The reason why I might live in people's heads is not because there's
[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_00]: something special about me.
[00:16:32] [SPEAKER_00]: It's because I realized that good speakers speak to be remembered.
[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Great speakers speak to be repeated.
[00:16:40] [SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_00]: And the way you get repeated is with those foundational phrases such as
[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_00]: don't get ready, stay ready.
[00:16:46] [SPEAKER_00]: The foundational phrases such as your dream is not for sale.
[00:16:49] [SPEAKER_00]: The foundational phrases such as which Marshall Goldsmith later wrote a
[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_00]: book about what got you here won't get you there.
[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_00]: You know, these are things that people are going to remember.
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_00]: They're going to repeat.
[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_00]: And when they get to a certain fork in the road, they might take
[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_00]: a different direction because of something that is repeating
[00:17:05] [SPEAKER_00]: in their head.
[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_00]: So that's an important part.
[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Story point foundational phrase.
[00:17:10] [SPEAKER_00]: You can do that.
[00:17:11] [SPEAKER_00]: You'll be beyond what most speakers ever do.
[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
[00:17:14] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's what we have been following.
[00:17:16] [SPEAKER_02]: Following you once we learned and became certified word class
[00:17:19] [SPEAKER_02]: speaking coach, we learn from you.
[00:17:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And that's what we teach our students as well.
[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_02]: So my next question to you is about habits like we all know
[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_02]: that first we build our habits, then our habits builders.
[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_02]: So somebody who's trying to become a coach, a trainer and
[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_02]: presenter, what are some of the habits that you want to say
[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_02]: that they must have these habits to become what they
[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_02]: want to become?
[00:17:45] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's different for each but for a speaker, you have
[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_00]: to have the habit of looking at life as a story.
[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_00]: So what I would do is it's much easier now because we have
[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_00]: phones, right?
[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_00]: We have these phones.
[00:17:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I have an app that's called reflect Lee, reflect L Y.
[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_00]: And anytime I get an idea or a thought, I capture it,
[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_00]: right?
[00:18:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Because I think it was what's the guy's name?
[00:18:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Ken Blanchard.
[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_00]: It was one of those guys who said that an idea when it
[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_00]: comes into your mind, you have 37 seconds before it leaves.
[00:18:19] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you don't capture it within 37 seconds, it's gone.
[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_00]: And so I make sure that I capture my genius.
[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_00]: That's a habit.
[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_00]: You got to capture your genius.
[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Now 98% of what you capture might be garbage, but that
[00:18:33] [SPEAKER_00]: 2% is gold.
[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_00]: And so that has to be a habit.
[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Another habit is and I'm going to do this.
[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to have a 30 day 30 story challenge.
[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_00]: And here's how it's going to go.
[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_00]: You're going to have to tell a new story every day for 30 days.
[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_00]: But here's the catch.
[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_00]: The story you tell has to have happened to you within the last
[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_00]: 48 hours.
[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's the way you can get because that's how I think
[00:18:59] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm constantly collecting my stories.
[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you do that, then that's something you can do as a
[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_00]: presenter as a coach.
[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_00]: The real habit is about forcing yourself to listen more.
[00:19:13] [SPEAKER_00]: When I'm coaching people, not on the podcast here because
[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_00]: this is different, but when I'm coaching somebody, I like to
[00:19:20] [SPEAKER_00]: follow the 80 20 rule where I'm spending 80% of the time
[00:19:24] [SPEAKER_00]: listening and 20% of the time asking and guiding.
[00:19:27] [SPEAKER_00]: And if you can do that, then I think you could be a very
[00:19:30] [SPEAKER_00]: successful coach because you're bringing the best out of
[00:19:32] [SPEAKER_00]: them.
[00:19:33] [SPEAKER_00]: And that's what we do as a habit for coaching.
[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Awesome.
[00:19:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much and totally agree to all of these.
[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_02]: In fact, I also follow.
[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_02]: I have so many apps and I say to everyone, doesn't matter
[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_02]: whether you are an app person, I have a copy that I keep.
[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_02]: I call it story banks every time something is happening.
[00:19:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I'm noting it down somewhere that I don't want to miss that
[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_02]: part, the reflection.
[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_02]: And I didn't know that study of 37 seconds, but it is very
[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_02]: important.
[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_02]: So I'm sending it myself towards app or putting it some
[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_02]: app, but I don't want to miss that because yes, once
[00:20:07] [SPEAKER_02]: that is gone, that is gone.
[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_02]: You'll probably remember it after a couple of years,
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_02]: couple decades.
[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what you will remember.
[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_00]: We think it's coming back.
[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_00]: We think all of that thought will come back.
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_00]: No, it's gone.
[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_00]: It's now in the ether and now somebody else is getting
[00:20:20] [SPEAKER_00]: rich and famous and touching lives off of your idea.
[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_00]: You just never captured it.
[00:20:24] [SPEAKER_00]: So I want to make sure that I capture everything.
[00:20:27] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
[00:20:28] [SPEAKER_02]: And what you're talking about, I've read a book.
[00:20:31] [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know whether you've read the book called The
[00:20:33] [SPEAKER_02]: Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert.
[00:20:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Who says that every idea has its own life and they come
[00:20:40] [SPEAKER_02]: to you when they want to happen to you.
[00:20:42] [SPEAKER_02]: But if you don't take action, it's going to go to
[00:20:44] [SPEAKER_02]: somewhere else.
[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_02]: And the point is if you don't take action at that
[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_02]: time, it's going to become someone else's idea.
[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_02]: It gave you opportunity.
[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_02]: You missed it and it's gone.
[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_00]: That's exactly what I believe.
[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[00:20:56] [SPEAKER_02]: Awesome.
[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_02]: So now let's talk about a little controversial, not
[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_02]: just a little bit.
[00:21:04] [SPEAKER_02]: There is a lot of people who solely focus on the
[00:21:07] [SPEAKER_02]: contract or script writing and there is also a
[00:21:10] [SPEAKER_02]: school who only focuses on the delivery.
[00:21:13] [SPEAKER_02]: So if you have to choose between delivery and
[00:21:16] [SPEAKER_02]: content, which side will you go into?
[00:21:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that's a great question.
[00:21:21] [SPEAKER_00]: That's like somebody asked me one time, do you
[00:21:23] [SPEAKER_00]: enjoy developing your speech more or delivering
[00:21:27] [SPEAKER_00]: your speech more?
[00:21:28] [SPEAKER_00]: And to be honest, I don't think I have an
[00:21:32] [SPEAKER_00]: answer yet because while I'm developing it, I
[00:21:36] [SPEAKER_00]: speak my way into speaking.
[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_00]: So while I'm developing it, I'm also delivering
[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_00]: it but there's just nobody there yet.
[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_00]: It's not like I sit there and write down, I've
[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_00]: never written down a speech in my life.
[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Never written down a speech in my life.
[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I speak my way into speaking.
[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_00]: And so it's a little different for me.
[00:21:53] [SPEAKER_00]: Like give me a topic.
[00:21:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Give me a topic right now, any type of
[00:21:56] [SPEAKER_00]: topic.
[00:21:58] [SPEAKER_02]: Anxiety.
[00:21:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about it.
[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[00:22:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Anxiety.
[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So I remember being really anxious one time to sing
[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_00]: at my best friend's wedding.
[00:22:08] [SPEAKER_00]: He said, I want you to sing at my wedding.
[00:22:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I said, okay, what do you think the first problem
[00:22:12] [SPEAKER_00]: is when he asked me to sing at his wedding?
[00:22:14] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you have any idea?
[00:22:15] [SPEAKER_00]: What do you think the first problem is?
[00:22:17] [SPEAKER_01]: I can't sing.
[00:22:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm a speaker but I can't sing, right?
[00:22:22] [SPEAKER_00]: But when we were kids, I could sing but then
[00:22:24] [SPEAKER_00]: my voice changed and I couldn't really sing
[00:22:25] [SPEAKER_00]: very well.
[00:22:26] [SPEAKER_00]: The second problem is I wasn't assertive
[00:22:29] [SPEAKER_00]: enough to say no.
[00:22:31] [SPEAKER_00]: So I had this anxiety like the day was coming.
[00:22:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Keep in mind, this is supposed to be his only wedding.
[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Right?
[00:22:37] [SPEAKER_00]: So I get to the church and all the groomsmen
[00:22:41] [SPEAKER_00]: and the groom and me were in the back and
[00:22:45] [SPEAKER_00]: they're looking at me like, hey, Craig, are you
[00:22:46] [SPEAKER_00]: nervous?
[00:22:47] [SPEAKER_00]: And heritage, I tried to fake out my nerves.
[00:22:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I said, me?
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Come on.
[00:22:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Don't you know I played college basketball in
[00:22:53] [SPEAKER_00]: front of 18,000 people.
[00:22:54] [SPEAKER_00]: You think I'm nervous to speak in front of 200?
[00:22:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Come on.
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm the kid, man.
[00:22:57] [SPEAKER_00]: I can do this.
[00:22:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was trying to fake out like I wasn't
[00:23:01] [SPEAKER_00]: nervous.
[00:23:02] [SPEAKER_00]: The music started playing.
[00:23:05] [SPEAKER_00]: The microphone is in front of me.
[00:23:07] [SPEAKER_00]: And heritage, it was the first time in my
[00:23:08] [SPEAKER_00]: life my breath left me.
[00:23:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know where my breath went or when
[00:23:14] [SPEAKER_00]: it was coming back but it was gone.
[00:23:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Now let me ask you something, heritage.
[00:23:17] [SPEAKER_00]: If you can't breathe, can you sing?
[00:23:19] [SPEAKER_00]: Not at all.
[00:23:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Not at all.
[00:23:21] [SPEAKER_00]: And I know you think well, I pulled it
[00:23:23] [SPEAKER_00]: together and it was great.
[00:23:24] [SPEAKER_00]: No, I was the worst wedding singer in the
[00:23:26] [SPEAKER_00]: history of weddings.
[00:23:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Again, keep in mind this is supposed to be
[00:23:31] [SPEAKER_00]: his only marriage, right?
[00:23:33] [SPEAKER_00]: So I bring that up because if you fast forward
[00:23:36] [SPEAKER_00]: a couple years, I have that same anxiety
[00:23:40] [SPEAKER_00]: but I had learned a new understanding.
[00:23:42] [SPEAKER_00]: You can't fake out your nerves.
[00:23:44] [SPEAKER_00]: You've got to accept them.
[00:23:46] [SPEAKER_00]: You've got to employ them and make them
[00:23:48] [SPEAKER_00]: work for you.
[00:23:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So when we go to the 1999 world champion
[00:23:53] [SPEAKER_00]: of public speaking, world championship of
[00:23:54] [SPEAKER_00]: public speaking in Chicago, Illinois, there's
[00:23:56] [SPEAKER_00]: 2,000 people out there.
[00:23:57] [SPEAKER_00]: There's big jumbotrons on each side of the
[00:23:59] [SPEAKER_00]: stage so if there's anything in your nose
[00:24:01] [SPEAKER_00]: it's going to be blown up like a thousand
[00:24:04] [SPEAKER_00]: times.
[00:24:05] [SPEAKER_00]: And I'm the ninth speaker out of nine
[00:24:07] [SPEAKER_00]: speakers at the world championship.
[00:24:08] [SPEAKER_00]: You think I'm nervous?
[00:24:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
[00:24:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Did I try to fake out my nerves?
[00:24:13] [SPEAKER_00]: No.
[00:24:14] [SPEAKER_00]: In fact, I said, you know what,
[00:24:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm nervous.
[00:24:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Thank you, Nervs for being here.
[00:24:18] [SPEAKER_00]: I know you're here to serve me.
[00:24:20] [SPEAKER_00]: I went up on stage and I gave that
[00:24:21] [SPEAKER_00]: speech better than I ever gave it in
[00:24:23] [SPEAKER_00]: practice when I wasn't nervous.
[00:24:25] [SPEAKER_00]: So one of my suggestions to people who
[00:24:27] [SPEAKER_00]: have anxiety is especially when it comes
[00:24:30] [SPEAKER_00]: to being nervous to speak, don't fake
[00:24:32] [SPEAKER_00]: out your nerves, accept them.
[00:24:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Accept your nerves and put them to work
[00:24:36] [SPEAKER_00]: for you.
[00:24:37] [SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
[00:24:38] [SPEAKER_00]: So now did I write anything down right
[00:24:40] [SPEAKER_00]: there?
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_00]: No.
[00:24:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I spoke my way into speaking and
[00:24:44] [SPEAKER_00]: that's the way you do it.
[00:24:46] [SPEAKER_00]: So to answer, go back and answer your
[00:24:47] [SPEAKER_00]: question, I think I would rather deliver
[00:24:50] [SPEAKER_00]: it because that's the moment where
[00:24:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm touching the life.
[00:24:53] [SPEAKER_02]: I must say that that was one of the best
[00:24:55] [SPEAKER_02]: table topics I have ever encountered.
[00:24:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I remember once I went to a club
[00:25:01] [SPEAKER_02]: and I said, okay, your topic is 1952.
[00:25:05] [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, okay, my father was born
[00:25:07] [SPEAKER_02]: in 1950.
[00:25:08] [SPEAKER_02]: So at that time, my father was two
[00:25:10] [SPEAKER_02]: years old and that's it.
[00:25:13] [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't have any second sentence to
[00:25:14] [SPEAKER_02]: say.
[00:25:15] [SPEAKER_02]: So that was like...
[00:25:17] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's a hard one.
[00:25:18] [SPEAKER_00]: That's a tough one.
[00:25:19] [SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know anything about that
[00:25:21] [SPEAKER_00]: year, it's like you got to relate it
[00:25:22] [SPEAKER_00]: to another year.
[00:25:24] [SPEAKER_00]: 1952, that was three years before the
[00:25:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Montgomery bus boycott and then
[00:25:28] [SPEAKER_00]: you can go into that story.
[00:25:30] [SPEAKER_00]: But you speak our way into speaking.
[00:25:32] [SPEAKER_02]: Absolutely.
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Amazing.
[00:25:34] [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you so much, Craig.
[00:25:36] [SPEAKER_02]: My last question to you is a lot
[00:25:39] [SPEAKER_02]: of speaking also involves selling
[00:25:42] [SPEAKER_02]: where you need to either sell your
[00:25:44] [SPEAKER_02]: ideas or you're trying to sell the
[00:25:46] [SPEAKER_02]: product or services.
[00:25:47] [SPEAKER_02]: So how can somebody approach selling
[00:25:51] [SPEAKER_02]: through speaking?
[00:25:54] [SPEAKER_00]: It's very important to understand
[00:25:56] [SPEAKER_00]: the most profitable concept in my
[00:26:00] [SPEAKER_00]: opinion is to never sell a product
[00:26:03] [SPEAKER_00]: or a service or an idea or even
[00:26:05] [SPEAKER_00]: yourself always sell the result.
[00:26:08] [SPEAKER_00]: And I put this video up on
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_00]: TikTok.
[00:26:10] [SPEAKER_00]: It has over 3.3 million views now.
[00:26:13] [SPEAKER_00]: And here's the essence of the video.
[00:26:16] [SPEAKER_00]: Never sell a product always sell the
[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_00]: result.
[00:26:18] [SPEAKER_00]: I always give this story case in point.
[00:26:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Decades ago I went to buy my first car
[00:26:23] [SPEAKER_00]: ever in life.
[00:26:24] [SPEAKER_00]: I went to the dealership.
[00:26:25] [SPEAKER_00]: Salesperson came up to me.
[00:26:26] [SPEAKER_00]: He said, are you looking at that car?
[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_00]: I said, yes sir.
[00:26:28] [SPEAKER_00]: He said great, let me tell you about it.
[00:26:30] [SPEAKER_00]: This car has these types of brakes,
[00:26:32] [SPEAKER_00]: this type of motor, this type of window.
[00:26:34] [SPEAKER_00]: Now, what's he trying to sell me?
[00:26:36] [SPEAKER_00]: The car.
[00:26:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I just said never sell a product
[00:26:39] [SPEAKER_00]: always sell the result.
[00:26:40] [SPEAKER_00]: So I said thank you but no thank
[00:26:41] [SPEAKER_00]: you're not interested.
[00:26:43] [SPEAKER_00]: You know this but I went to a
[00:26:44] [SPEAKER_00]: different dealership same day.
[00:26:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Different salesperson, same car.
[00:26:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Now in all honesty,
[00:26:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I think he might have understood where
[00:26:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I was mentally and emotionally at that
[00:26:55] [SPEAKER_00]: point in my life, you know, young and
[00:26:57] [SPEAKER_00]: single and looking to mingle.
[00:27:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Feel free to use that one.
[00:27:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So he walks up to me says are you
[00:27:03] [SPEAKER_00]: looking at that car?
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I said yes sir.
[00:27:04] [SPEAKER_00]: He said, you're going to look good
[00:27:07] [SPEAKER_00]: in that one.
[00:27:08] [SPEAKER_00]: He said, yeah man you're going to
[00:27:10] [SPEAKER_00]: be flying down the road.
[00:27:11] [SPEAKER_00]: The wind is going to be blowing through
[00:27:12] [SPEAKER_00]: your hair and the girls, let me tell
[00:27:14] [SPEAKER_00]: you the girls will be all over you.
[00:27:15] [SPEAKER_00]: You already know but what do you think
[00:27:17] [SPEAKER_00]: I did?
[00:27:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I said where do I stop?
[00:27:22] [SPEAKER_00]: He made the sale not because he sold
[00:27:24] [SPEAKER_00]: me the car but he sold me the results
[00:27:26] [SPEAKER_00]: and he lied.
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I always tell
[00:27:32] [SPEAKER_00]: you I was lonely in that car.
[00:27:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Just me and my payment.
[00:27:38] [SPEAKER_00]: What I tell people is never sell a
[00:27:39] [SPEAKER_00]: product, never sell a product,
[00:27:40] [SPEAKER_00]: never sell a product or service or
[00:27:42] [SPEAKER_00]: an idea or change, always sell the
[00:27:43] [SPEAKER_00]: result.
[00:27:44] [SPEAKER_00]: So when it comes to sales it needs to
[00:27:46] [SPEAKER_00]: be what's in it for them.
[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Right?
[00:27:50] [SPEAKER_00]: And one way you can do that is you
[00:27:52] [SPEAKER_00]: can do it's what I call a results
[00:27:54] [SPEAKER_00]: generator.
[00:27:55] [SPEAKER_00]: If I was to say okay you need
[00:27:58] [SPEAKER_00]: to imagine yourself.
[00:28:01] [SPEAKER_00]: You need to understand that
[00:28:02] [SPEAKER_00]: imagination is the best nation in
[00:28:03] [SPEAKER_00]: the world.
[00:28:05] [SPEAKER_00]: What I can do is use the phrase
[00:28:07] [SPEAKER_00]: so that you can.
[00:28:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Imagination so that you can.
[00:28:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Anything that follows that is going
[00:28:12] [SPEAKER_00]: to be a good result so that you can
[00:28:14] [SPEAKER_00]: find yourself moving toward your goals
[00:28:16] [SPEAKER_00]: and dreams and aspirations even while
[00:28:18] [SPEAKER_00]: you're asleep so that you can feel the
[00:28:20] [SPEAKER_00]: providence and serendipity at your
[00:28:22] [SPEAKER_00]: back pushing you dare I say
[00:28:24] [SPEAKER_00]: effortlessly towards your dreams
[00:28:26] [SPEAKER_00]: so that one day you wake up in it.
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_00]: Right?
[00:28:29] [SPEAKER_00]: So if you can just put what it is
[00:28:31] [SPEAKER_00]: you want them to do and then
[00:28:33] [SPEAKER_00]: you say so that you can whatever
[00:28:35] [SPEAKER_00]: follow that follows that is going
[00:28:37] [SPEAKER_00]: to be a really good result.
[00:28:39] [SPEAKER_00]: So never sell the products always sell
[00:28:40] [SPEAKER_00]: the result and here's the other thing
[00:28:42] [SPEAKER_00]: we want to put the result before
[00:28:45] [SPEAKER_00]: the resource.
[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[00:28:46] [SPEAKER_00]: I always ask my audience I say raise
[00:28:48] [SPEAKER_00]: your hand if you're here from now
[00:28:49] [SPEAKER_00]: you'd like to be three times better
[00:28:51] [SPEAKER_00]: than the presenter you are today
[00:28:52] [SPEAKER_00]: all hands go up.
[00:28:54] [SPEAKER_00]: I say great then for absolutely free
[00:28:56] [SPEAKER_00]: you can go to one of my websites
[00:28:58] [SPEAKER_00]: which is 52speakingtips.com
[00:29:01] [SPEAKER_00]: that's five two speaking tips
[00:29:03] [SPEAKER_00]: dot com every week for a year you're
[00:29:05] [SPEAKER_00]: going to get an audio lesson from me
[00:29:07] [SPEAKER_00]: and by the end of that year you will be
[00:29:08] [SPEAKER_00]: at least three times better than the presenter
[00:29:10] [SPEAKER_00]: you are today.
[00:29:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Now if we were to just stop
[00:29:14] [SPEAKER_00]: that and chop it up a little bit
[00:29:15] [SPEAKER_00]: I would ask my audience okay what was
[00:29:17] [SPEAKER_00]: the result they say three times
[00:29:19] [SPEAKER_00]: better what was the resource
[00:29:21] [SPEAKER_00]: they say the website I said which one
[00:29:23] [SPEAKER_00]: did I mention first somebody always says
[00:29:26] [SPEAKER_00]: free somebody always says free
[00:29:29] [SPEAKER_00]: but somebody also says the result
[00:29:31] [SPEAKER_00]: and that's the key
[00:29:32] [SPEAKER_00]: never sell a product always sell the
[00:29:34] [SPEAKER_00]: result always put the result
[00:29:37] [SPEAKER_00]: before the resource
[00:29:39] [SPEAKER_00]: and if you're in leadership you want to
[00:29:40] [SPEAKER_00]: state the result
[00:29:42] [SPEAKER_00]: before the request
[00:29:44] [SPEAKER_00]: absolutely do that then you're
[00:29:47] [SPEAKER_00]: really cooking with oil or cooking
[00:29:49] [SPEAKER_00]: with grease because most people
[00:29:50] [SPEAKER_00]: do the other way around most people
[00:29:53] [SPEAKER_00]: say something like this raise your hand
[00:29:55] [SPEAKER_00]: if you'd like to receive 52 emails from me
[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_00]: I
[00:30:00] [SPEAKER_00]: learned I already have 15,000
[00:30:03] [SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's going to
[00:30:04] [SPEAKER_00]: work very well but you know raise
[00:30:06] [SPEAKER_00]: your hand if a year from now you'd like to be three times better than
[00:30:08] [SPEAKER_00]: the presenter you are today that that's going to work
[00:30:11] [SPEAKER_02]: amazing thank you so much
[00:30:13] [SPEAKER_02]: Craig and I can definitely bow that it has
[00:30:15] [SPEAKER_02]: certainly I had got
[00:30:16] [SPEAKER_02]: all the 52 speaking tips

[00:30:20] [SPEAKER_02]: one of them is pure gold
[00:30:22] [SPEAKER_02]: and diamond to say I've learned
[00:30:24] [SPEAKER_02]: from each one of them so much so that
[00:30:26] [SPEAKER_02]: that I couldn't afford to become
[00:30:29] [SPEAKER_02]: certified work class speaking coach
[00:30:30] [SPEAKER_02]: in 2022
[00:30:32] [SPEAKER_02]: but I made it as my resolution
[00:30:34] [SPEAKER_02]: for 2023 that I'm going to go
[00:30:36] [SPEAKER_02]: through the program and it was all because
[00:30:38] [SPEAKER_02]: all the 52 each and
