India’s hunger for coal is alarming

India has made several international commitments to shift to cleaner sources of energy. Yet, it continues to burn coal in ever increasing volumes and open up more mines. The domestic coal requirement is expected to rise to 1,018.2 million tons by 2031-32 from 678 million tons in 2021-2022 – an increase of 40%. India justifies this by pointing out that other fossil fuels are expensive and it needs cheaper power to fuel its growth. Meanwhile, emissions continue to rise.
