कुठलेही अंगविक्षेप न करता, आचारट विनोदाचा आश्रय न घेता काही मोजक्याच विनोदी कलाकारांनी प्रेक्षकांना भरपूर हसवल त्यात एक नाव नक्कीच घ्यावं लागेल आणि ते म्हणजे देवेन वर्मा.
कधी नायकाचा मित्र, कधी भाऊ तर कधी घरचा नोकर, भूमिका कोणतीही असो, देवेन आपली छाप सोडून जायचा. प्रेक्षक नक्कीच त्याच्या भूमिकांची दखल घेत आणि लक्षात ठेवत. तो नेहमी म्हणायचा, नट अपयशी ठरला तर अन्य कुठल्याही भूमिका करून परत यशस्वी होऊ शकतो मात्र विनोदी नटाच तस नसत आम्हाला इंडस्ट्रीच सोडावी लागेल. चित्रपट सृष्टीतल्या अनेक कलाकारांना जो दिग्दर्शक आणि निर्माता होण्याचा मोह होतो तो देवेन ला पण झाला. त्याने आठ एक चित्रपटांच दिग्दर्शन केलं पण यश काही हाती लागलं नाही. मात्र 1963 ते 1986 अशी 23 वर्ष एक यशस्वी विनोदी नट म्हणून इंडस्ट्रीत टिकून राहणं नक्कीच सोप नव्हतं.

One among the very few comedy actors who made the audience laugh for years of their career is Deven Varma. He played roles like friend of main actor, some times a brother or some times a servant of the house.
Deven always impressed the audience with his presence. They always remembered him though it used be a small role in entire movie. Deven used to say, if an actor is unsuccessful then he or she can come back and be successful by acting in any role again. But, in case of comedy actor its different, if we are unsuccessful, we might have to leave the industry. Like many other artists in movie industry, Devan was too tempted to be a director and producer. He directed around 8 movies but, it was not a great success. Definitely it was not easy to remain in industry for 23 years (1963 to 1968) as a comedy actor.
