Building A Mouthpiece For Young Professionals Globally

The first episode of the Thrifty Titans. podcast features Marcella Risye, the founder of The Growth Room (thegrowthroom.co), a truly unique open-source platform that appreciates and celebrates growth journeys, regardless of designations and brand names.

We discuss what led Marcella to launch an online platform to celebrate the growth journeys of entry and mid-career professionals, the dire need for recognition across age groups, income and experience levels, and how employers celebrating small wins at work can go a long way in fostering a more inclusive and progressive work culture for one and all.

00:01:40

Saikat Pyne: the growth room dot com. Welcome to the podcast, Marcela.

00:01:45

Marcella Risye: Well, that's a great intro. Thank you for having me.

00:01:49

Marcella Risye: This is really exciting.

00:01:50

Saikat Pyne: So what led you to launch the growth

00:01:52

Marcella Risye: room? I think during my time in Aspire, I fortunately

00:01:57

Marcella Risye: had a lot of like interactions with founders, and I

00:02:00

Marcella Risye: managed to interview them for articles or Webinars. And I

00:02:04

Marcella Risye: think personally it's fulfilling to see that the content that

00:02:07

Marcella Risye: we help them create gets a lot of positive feedback.

00:02:10

Marcella Risye: I think you can relate to this. But then I

00:02:12

Marcella Risye: start wondering, you know, like, Who's gonna interview my team?

00:02:16

Marcella Risye: Like

00:02:17

Marcella Risye: even mine and my colleagues turn to be interviewed because

00:02:21

Marcella Risye: I think we are not founders. But we also work

00:02:25

Marcella Risye: like 9 to 6 or sometimes arguably more, and I

00:02:29

Marcella Risye: think we create some sort of impact to the company,

00:02:31

Marcella Risye: whether it's big or not. But we do influence on

00:02:35

Marcella Risye: the performance of the company, and I think Entry and

00:02:38

Marcella Risye: Mid-level employees deserve some recognition, too. So, yeah, that is

00:02:41

Marcella Risye: something that I've been thinking for some time

00:02:44

Marcella Risye: until I finally got a chance to be interviewed by

00:02:47

Marcella Risye: a media company based in Australia. And that was was

00:02:50

Marcella Risye: my like first time on a legit interview, sharing things

00:02:55

Marcella Risye: that are more off my professional side.

00:02:58

Marcella Risye: It feels great that someone's acknowledging my profile. But I

00:03:02

Marcella Risye: think what even convinced me to pursue the growth room

00:03:07

Marcella Risye: is because I believe that the content that I post

00:03:09

Marcella Risye: on LinkedIn indirectly influences my personal branding. And I don't

00:03:13

Marcella Risye: want to share that with people. I want people to

00:03:15

Marcella Risye: feel that way, and I if I can help them

00:03:18

Marcella Risye: build their personal branding, then why not?

00:03:22

Saikat Pyne: That is such a lovely point there. So tell me

00:03:25

Saikat Pyne: about your first media interview. How did that go about?

00:03:29

Marcella Risye: OK, I managed to get this out of my interviewer,

00:03:32

Marcella Risye: and he he admitted that he he misunderstood my profile.

00:03:39

Marcella Risye: He thought that I was like some CMO in a fire.

00:03:43

Saikat Pyne: So it was. It was meant to be an interview

00:03:46

Saikat Pyne: with the CMO of Aspire, and it turned out to

00:03:48

Saikat Pyne: be Marcela.

00:03:50

Marcella Risye: Well, it doesn't have to be CMO, but he thought

00:03:52

Marcella Risye: I was someone who's more senior in a company but no,

00:03:56

Marcella Risye: like Aspire is my first job. But then I'm so

00:03:58

Marcella Risye: grateful that he decided to still post my article, and

00:04:03

Marcella Risye: now we're really we're in a good relationship. In fact,

00:04:06

Marcella Risye: he's actually the first person who inspires me to build

00:04:09

Marcella Risye: the growth room. We had a chat after the whole

00:04:12

Marcella Risye: interview for his media company. We had a chat to

00:04:14

Marcella Risye: get to know him

00:04:15

Marcella Risye: each other. And I told him that, you know, what

00:04:18

Marcella Risye: you're doing now is something that I actually want to

00:04:20

Marcella Risye: do as well. But maybe not so much on the

00:04:22

Marcella Risye: sea levels. I want to appreciate my friends. And he

00:04:25

Marcella Risye: told me that I should just start doing it. Start

00:04:28

Marcella Risye: with my own circle and eventually I did. And so

00:04:31

Marcella Risye: that is why he got the first interview spot on

00:04:35

Marcella Risye: my blog.

00:04:37

Saikat Pyne: That is such a lovely story. So somebody mistook you

00:04:42

Saikat Pyne: for AC N A. And that's how you landed your

00:04:45

Saikat Pyne: first media profiling opportunity and you

00:04:49

Marcella Risye: tell me this happened to you.

00:04:52

Saikat Pyne: I I have done this so many times,

00:04:55

Saikat Pyne: not not with media interviews, but as APR person. For

00:05:01

Saikat Pyne: for multiple brands, you often have to come off as

00:05:05

Saikat Pyne: authoritative right. You have to come off as a face

00:05:08

Saikat Pyne: for the brand, the confident face for the brand, the

00:05:11

Saikat Pyne: person who knows what they are talking about. And often

00:05:14

Saikat Pyne: you're the young person in the room. You're not the

00:05:16

Saikat Pyne: person who's probably the most influential you're not. You're not

00:05:20

Saikat Pyne: AC x o. You're not AC X o at 20 something, right?

00:05:23

Saikat Pyne: So

00:05:24

Saikat Pyne: what often happens is you put on a face you

00:05:28

Saikat Pyne: put on your game face and you appear in these

00:05:31

Saikat Pyne: interviews often as a spokesperson for your company. Often you,

00:05:35

Saikat Pyne: you know, appear in these media round tables with some very,

00:05:38

Saikat Pyne: very senior people who know their shit. And you just

00:05:41

Saikat Pyne: have a chat and you try to not mess up.

00:05:45

Saikat Pyne: And I think most of us who are in marketing,

00:05:49

Saikat Pyne: who are in PR get into these discussions not necessarily

00:05:55

Saikat Pyne: hoping to build their own personal brands, but just

00:05:59

Saikat Pyne: with just the expectation of let me showcase my brand

00:06:04

Saikat Pyne: in the best possible light. And that has always been

00:06:08

Saikat Pyne: the case with me. And like you said, you you

00:06:11

Saikat Pyne: as you approached this gentleman, I think, uh, Mr How

00:06:15

Saikat Pyne: right from the

00:06:17

Marcella Risye: group,

00:06:17

Saikat Pyne: right? Yeah. Mr How. And and that is And that

00:06:22

Saikat Pyne: is how you landed your first interview. So,

00:06:25

Saikat Pyne: uh, your your first media opportunity. As as a professional.

00:06:30

Saikat Pyne: Do you think that there is a gap in terms

00:06:36

Saikat Pyne: of the industry recognising

00:06:39

Saikat Pyne: the the the amount of effort and the amount of

00:06:44

Saikat Pyne: work that goes on, Why? Why do you think that is?

00:06:47

Saikat Pyne: Because I'm sure there there was a huge gap that

00:06:50

Saikat Pyne: you realised was there, which led you to launch the

00:06:53

Saikat Pyne: growth role, which is like a a free for everybody, right?

00:06:58

Saikat Pyne: It says they're on the website. You know, your core

00:07:00

Saikat Pyne: values to have equal respect for all talent, right? So

00:07:03

Saikat Pyne: why do you think it's so important to share and

00:07:05

Saikat Pyne: celebrate these

00:07:06

Marcella Risye: stories?

00:07:07

Marcella Risye: Um, I think the respect for all talent value is

00:07:12

Marcella Risye: closer to my personal value. Um, I do believe that

00:07:15

Marcella Risye: everyone's hard work deserves some sort of recognition, although it's

00:07:18

Marcella Risye: only natural for you know, someone who are more experienced, um,

00:07:22

Marcella Risye: to receive even more spotlight because they've achieved so much

00:07:26

Marcella Risye: in life and they have just naturally, more connections. Um,

00:07:30

Marcella Risye: but when I say recognition, it doesn't mean that you

00:07:33

Marcella Risye: have to

00:07:34

Marcella Risye: to buy them coffee or treat them a meal to celebrate.

00:07:36

Marcella Risye: But it could be like the little things. It's you

00:07:38

Marcella Risye: know how it's easy for you to spot when someone

00:07:40

Marcella Risye: makes a mistake. But why can't it be easy for

00:07:43

Marcella Risye: you to spot when someone's doing a job well done? Um,

00:07:46

Marcella Risye: although maybe you can argue that, you know, everyone's supposed

00:07:49

Marcella Risye: to do a great job on what they're being paid for,

00:07:52

Marcella Risye: but I think it's I think it's only natural for

00:07:56

Marcella Risye: someone to be, you know, to feel like they they did, um,

00:08:00

Marcella Risye: a good job. And

00:08:02

Marcella Risye: with that in mind, I think it's makes it somehow

00:08:05

Marcella Risye: easier for you to accept critics as well, because critics

00:08:08

Marcella Risye: comes in positive and a negative comments. And if if

00:08:12

Marcella Risye: both of them I feel like, um, influences your growth

00:08:15

Marcella Risye: for you to do better. And so I think it's

00:08:18

Marcella Risye: just as important, Um, I think recognition is just as

00:08:20

Marcella Risye: important as, um giving, um, critics or advices. So yeah,

00:08:26

Saikat Pyne: absolutely, absolutely. And like I said, I read this quote somewhere.

00:08:31

Saikat Pyne: That said, We are not thinking beings who feel we

00:08:35

Saikat Pyne: are feeling beings who think

00:08:37

Saikat Pyne: so. If you make

00:08:38

Marcella Risye: people let that sink for a while, right,

00:08:43

Saikat Pyne: it's so true, right? You make somebody feel good, you

00:08:46

Saikat Pyne: make them feel invested in the company that they work for.

00:08:49

Saikat Pyne: You make them feel invested in the job that they do,

00:08:52

Saikat Pyne: and that's how they would want to do better at

00:08:54

Saikat Pyne: their job, right that's how they want to invest in

00:08:57

Saikat Pyne: themselves and invest the time in the company. So there's

00:09:01

Saikat Pyne: no reason for anybody to be insecure about, you know,

00:09:07

Saikat Pyne: having the small guy get a bit of attention. The

00:09:10

Saikat Pyne: small guy get a bit of recognition. The small guy

00:09:12

Saikat Pyne: have a seat at the table and not have to

00:09:15

Saikat Pyne: constantly feel like they have to earn their place,

00:09:18

Saikat Pyne: you know. And in a media article, if they like writing,

00:09:21

Saikat Pyne: they have to earn their place in terms of, you know,

00:09:23

Saikat Pyne: a podcast appearance. Let's say they have to earn their

00:09:25

Saikat Pyne: place in terms of a press conference or a media

00:09:28

Saikat Pyne: event that they can attend because they are experts on

00:09:32

Saikat Pyne: the subject. They just don't have the designation. That's the

00:09:35

Saikat Pyne: only thing that's keeping them away from that appearance. It's

00:09:40

Saikat Pyne: plain unfair. It's just

00:09:41

Marcella Risye: unfair. It actually might appear a bit cliche if we

00:09:44

Marcella Risye: discuss about this, because

00:09:46

Marcella Risye: I think maybe I don't know if there are listeners thinking,

00:09:49

Marcella Risye: you know, of course, we recognise good work, but it's

00:09:53

Marcella Risye: actually easy to slip your mind when you're doing the

00:09:56

Marcella Risye: work on from Monday to Friday 9 to 6. You

00:09:59

Marcella Risye: just want to get things done. You have no time

00:10:01

Marcella Risye: to recognise the small things. And I think that is

00:10:03

Marcella Risye: why it's just as important to practise, you know, recognise

00:10:07

Marcella Risye: your cliques job Well done. As much as you know,

00:10:10

Marcella Risye: if you want to help someone improve them for the better, Um,

00:10:13

Marcella Risye: for something that they did, um, wrongly, for example, right?

00:10:17

Saikat Pyne: Absolutely. If you've given somebody negative feedback, you should also

00:10:21

Saikat Pyne: share them with positive feedback. You should pamper them just

00:10:24

Saikat Pyne: as much as you'd like to. You know,

00:10:27

Saikat Pyne: set yourself in front of them for doing a bad

00:10:30

Saikat Pyne: job once in a while because everybody messes up, right?

00:10:33

Saikat Pyne: We're all human. We mess up sometimes We do a

00:10:35

Saikat Pyne: great job sometimes. And it's only fair to be acknowledged

00:10:39

Saikat Pyne: for the good things that you do. While you most

00:10:42

Saikat Pyne: definitely will be acknowledged for the bad things you do

00:10:44

Saikat Pyne: and any company, right?

00:10:47

Marcella Risye: Yeah. How

00:10:48

Saikat Pyne: long has it been for you launching the growth role

00:10:51

Saikat Pyne: and and how has the response been so far?

00:10:55

Marcella Risye: Um, still very, very new. It's only been less than

00:10:59

Marcella Risye: two months, I think, Um, and above responses. I mean,

00:11:05

Marcella Risye: most of the responses are great. I think There are

00:11:08

Marcella Risye: two types of responses that I receive first is those

00:11:12

Marcella Risye: that are from the interviewees. I think all of their

00:11:15

Marcella Risye: feedbacks are really great. I mean, the fact that they

00:11:17

Marcella Risye: want to do this with me, who's, you know, this

00:11:20

Marcella Risye: young girl with a side project? Um, but they've agreed

00:11:23

Marcella Risye: to spend some time, and they they're willing to share

00:11:26

Marcella Risye: their stories to the world. I think it's amazing. So

00:11:28

Marcella Risye: they're really supportive about that.

00:11:30

Marcella Risye: Um, but then there are also feedbacks from the consumers

00:11:34

Marcella Risye: who are the readers themselves. I think when I look through, um,

00:11:37

Marcella Risye: the LinkedIn Post that my interviewees posted, um, about the

00:11:41

Marcella Risye: growth room article featuring themselves, I think the feedback are

00:11:44

Marcella Risye: mostly great. And Sam, um, it's it's It's

00:11:48

Marcella Risye: interesting to see the comments that they're giving to the interviewees,

00:11:52

Marcella Risye: because I think some of the interviewees that I interviewed

00:11:55

Marcella Risye: are managers, and some of the comments are really sweet.

00:11:58

Marcella Risye: They said that you know, they are really inspired, even

00:12:00

Marcella Risye: just by the small details, because I think one of

00:12:02

Marcella Risye: the questions in the interviews that I ask in the

00:12:04

Marcella Risye: articles are

00:12:06

Marcella Risye: like, Tell me, like, go through with me on a

00:12:09

Marcella Risye: day in your life, Um, on a weekday, and it's

00:12:11

Marcella Risye: the little details that are that are interesting. Um, because

00:12:15

Marcella Risye: it really shows that, you know, your manager is just human.

00:12:18

Marcella Risye: After all, we make the same coffee, we spend the

00:12:20

Marcella Risye: same amount of time to read books or go for

00:12:23

Marcella Risye: a walk. Um, so that's I think is the most

00:12:26

Marcella Risye: interesting part. Although a lot of people

00:12:28

Marcella Risye: ask, like, why am I creating a blog article? Like,

00:12:32

Marcella Risye: you know, podcast is a thing these days, Um, which

00:12:36

Marcella Risye: is why I think you're doing this, which is great.

00:12:38

Marcella Risye: But I think, yeah, but I think the whole idea

00:12:42

Marcella Risye: that I had in mind is to help people create, um,

00:12:45

Marcella Risye: LinkedIn content.

00:12:47

Marcella Risye: Um, I think I'm really into LinkedIn these days. I

00:12:50

Marcella Risye: was previously an instagram person, but I think the the

00:12:54

Marcella Risye: number of connections that I made from LinkedIn and the

00:12:57

Marcella Risye: number of great people that I managed to connect with

00:13:00

Marcella Risye: you being one of them is just It's just amazing,

00:13:02

Marcella Risye: like I connected with you from LinkedIn, right? So that's

00:13:05

Marcella Risye: really great. And if I can help others connect on LinkedIn,

00:13:09

Marcella Risye: I should definitely help them. And here I am in

00:13:13

Marcella Risye: the background, creating the content for them. It's Yeah, it's

00:13:16

Marcella Risye: personally quite fulfilling for myself. That's

00:13:18

Saikat Pyne: that's so lovely to hear, because here you are, as

00:13:24

Saikat Pyne: you know, with a project that started with a connection

00:13:29

Saikat Pyne: based on an interview that you gave, and here you

00:13:32

Saikat Pyne: are enabling others to create connections for themselves. Right? That's

00:13:37

Saikat Pyne: what the growth room is about. When you share your story,

00:13:40

Saikat Pyne: you enable others to read about it, share their own story,

00:13:45

Saikat Pyne: and that's how you create connections between people. So if

00:13:49

Saikat Pyne: you know there are 100 100 people that you've interviewed

00:13:52

Saikat Pyne: and they post it to their 100 followers,

00:13:56

Saikat Pyne: imagine the sheer size of the audience and the sheer

00:14:01

Saikat Pyne: the number of people who are now listening and hearing

00:14:06

Saikat Pyne: every word that these people have got to say That

00:14:09

Saikat Pyne: has an incremental effect. Um, on how the person is

00:14:14

Saikat Pyne: perceived the self confidence, their body of work and most

00:14:18

Saikat Pyne: definitely

00:14:20

Saikat Pyne: how they are perceived, uh, at work and and within

00:14:24

Saikat Pyne: their professional circles. Right? So that makes a huge difference.

00:14:28

Saikat Pyne: It's It's a domino effect to write through, because when

00:14:32

Saikat Pyne: I share something about myself on LinkedIn about being featured somewhere.

00:14:37

Saikat Pyne: That's That's not what the you Know is expected from

00:14:40

Saikat Pyne: a mid-level manager.

00:14:42

Saikat Pyne: It's not expected that the Mid-level manager, the entry level,

00:14:46

Saikat Pyne: the fresher at work nobody expects to hear from them.

00:14:52

Saikat Pyne: And the reason behind that is that's how it's always been.

00:14:56

Saikat Pyne: That's how it's been. That's the only reason why. Why

00:15:00

Saikat Pyne: are there no media articles about fresh?

00:15:03

Saikat Pyne: Nobody can answer that. It's just be, Do they not

00:15:07

Saikat Pyne: do interesting work? I'm sure there are a lot of

00:15:09

Saikat Pyne: very young people out there doing some truly bad ass work.

00:15:13

Saikat Pyne: But the only reason that they never get noticed is

00:15:17

Saikat Pyne: because that's how it is. Somebody decided that that that

00:15:22

Saikat Pyne: somebody is important and deserves some amount of attention from

00:15:26

Saikat Pyne: the media, from social media from from ER. And these

00:15:30

Saikat Pyne: are the the couple of people who get all of

00:15:33

Saikat Pyne: the attention right in terms of marketing project

00:15:36

Saikat Pyne: directed towards them elevating their personal brand. So So these

00:15:41

Saikat Pyne: these company funded projects over time actually elevate their personal brand,

00:15:48

Saikat Pyne: so the company is truly investing in them, the C

00:15:53

Saikat Pyne: o right or whoever that can be that that that

00:15:55

Saikat Pyne: might be the founder,

00:15:57

Saikat Pyne: but the person who's doing the job at a mid

00:16:00

Saikat Pyne: management management level at at an entry level is has

00:16:06

Saikat Pyne: as much skin in the game

00:16:08

Saikat Pyne: is putting in just as many hours, if not more

00:16:11

Saikat Pyne: in some cases. So that person deserves to be seen

00:16:17

Saikat Pyne: just as much as anybody who appears as a company spokesperson. Uh,

00:16:22

Saikat Pyne: you know, in front of journalists at media events and

00:16:24

Saikat Pyne: some such right, that person deserves just as much attention

00:16:29

Saikat Pyne: just as much appreciation and just as much investment from

00:16:33

Saikat Pyne: the company into building their personal brands.

00:16:37

Saikat Pyne: Because these are the this is this is the larger

00:16:42

Saikat Pyne: target audience, right? How many founders can you have for

00:16:46

Saikat Pyne: a company? One right. Imagine having 1000 employees and every

00:16:52

Saikat Pyne: single employee endorses you. Every single employee is like a

00:16:57

Saikat Pyne: good recommendation. Every single employee is like it is like

00:17:01

Saikat Pyne: a positive if you want, uh, on on Yelp, right?

00:17:05

Saikat Pyne: Imagine what that would mean for a brand. It just

00:17:08

Saikat Pyne: means you have 1000 people who are doing free PR

00:17:12

Saikat Pyne: for you. They are your They are your marketing. They

00:17:16

Saikat Pyne: are the people driving your marketing because there is so

00:17:20

Saikat Pyne: much power in word of mouth, right?

00:17:23

Marcella Risye: Yeah,

00:17:25

Marcella Risye: Yeah, that's true. I think I know one company who

00:17:29

Marcella Risye: is actually aligned to what you suggested, and you know

00:17:32

Marcella Risye: this company. So I think I think LinkedIn um, they

00:17:35

Marcella Risye: have this, like creator programme. Um, recently, it's it's it's

00:17:40

Marcella Risye: beginning to

00:17:40

Marcella Risye: be very big, and I know that they explicitly encourage

00:17:44

Marcella Risye: the employees to be the creators in their own ways.

00:17:47

Marcella Risye: Like you don't have to be a creator for LinkedIn. OK,

00:17:50

Marcella Risye: despite the fact that you know it's their company, it's

00:17:53

Marcella Risye: where they work. But it's, I think

00:17:56

Marcella Risye: the whole foundation to this is basically just to encourage

00:17:59

Marcella Risye: you to be your own creator, um, to build your

00:18:03

Marcella Risye: own personal branding. So I think that that's really great,

00:18:06

Marcella Risye: that they really acknowledge even the entry levels or even

00:18:09

Marcella Risye: the interns. So that's good to see.

00:18:13

Saikat Pyne: That's that's such a lovely company practise.

00:18:15

Marcella Risye: Not everyone you know wants to be the face of

00:18:17

Marcella Risye: the company, so we leave that open. But I think

00:18:20

Marcella Risye: what we are trying to,

00:18:22

Marcella Risye: um, bring across is the fact that, um, if there

00:18:25

Marcella Risye: are employees that deserve it, and you think that you know,

00:18:28

Marcella Risye: she he or she would appreciate the acknowledgement and quite

00:18:32

Marcella Risye: stop yourself from giving that. Yeah,

00:18:34

Saikat Pyne: absolutely. Absolutely. If there is somebody who's willing to endorse

00:18:38

Saikat Pyne: you and if there is somebody who's willing to step

00:18:41

Saikat Pyne: up and be seen as an advocate for the company.

00:18:45

Saikat Pyne: So now tell me, what are your future plans with

00:18:48

Saikat Pyne: this project? What does look like over the next six

00:18:52

Saikat Pyne: months over the next year? Oh,

00:18:54

Marcella Risye: gosh, I think as much as I've been telling myself

00:18:57

Marcella Risye: to keep a chill and not put too much pressure

00:19:00

Marcella Risye: on this project, there are things that I wish to

00:19:04

Marcella Risye: achieve for the growth room. And I think it all

00:19:07

Marcella Risye: boils down to why I started this in first place.

00:19:10

Marcella Risye: No spoilers for now, but I think as long as

00:19:12

Marcella Risye: you know this can help someone build their personal branding.

00:19:16

Marcella Risye: If this can help connect talents from anywhere around the world,

00:19:20

Marcella Risye: I'm definitely up to growing the growth room to be

00:19:25

Marcella Risye: bigger than what it is now. Not that it's big now,

00:19:27

Marcella Risye: but to, you know, create more impact.

00:19:30

Marcella Risye: Yeah, and maybe if I can ask for one thing.

00:19:34

Marcella Risye: If if, like any founders or HR s listening to

00:19:37

Marcella Risye: this and you wish to nominate someone because you know

00:19:43

Marcella Risye: they did a good job, and you feel like they

00:19:44

Marcella Risye: deserve the recognition. I'd be happy to interview them

00:19:48

Marcella Risye: and help them build their personal branding.

00:19:52

Saikat Pyne: That's such a lovely note to end on. If you
