[00:00:03] Hey everyone, this is Voice with Warikoo, with my, or Ankur Warikoo.
[00:00:08] In this English podcast series, I cover a lot of things in this English podcast series.
[00:00:11] Career, relationships, personal finance, success, failure, and frankly, something else that comes to this time.
[00:00:19] Every week on Thursday, a new episode on your favorite podcast platform.
[00:00:24] Voice with Warikoo.
[00:00:28] So the other day, I was reading about this founder called Brian Armstrong.
[00:00:34] Brian Armstrong is a startup, Coinbase.
[00:00:39] Coinbase is one of the US's largest brokerage companies.
[00:00:43] So just in India, it's a real thing.
[00:00:45] In the US, Coinbase is a coinbase.
[00:00:47] And he explains how he built Coinbase on nights and weekends while working in his day job at Airbnb.
[00:00:55] So he basically describes that he was a full-time job at Airbnb.
[00:00:58] And he would often work at Airbnb till say about 7 p.m. or so.
[00:01:02] Then he'd come home, eat dinner, and then he would start working from 8 p.m. to midnight.
[00:01:07] Then you would do the same thing 3-4 days a week.
[00:01:10] And he would also do it on weekends.
[00:01:13] But weekends, he would then work for 7-8 hours.
[00:01:17] And I personally believe that that is a very smart way to think about your passion.
[00:01:24] Many people say, quit your job to follow your passion.
[00:01:27] I feel that this approach either comes from a point of privilege,
[00:01:31] that you have so much money or so much financial stability that you can quit your job to follow your passion.
[00:01:36] Or more often, it comes from absolute foolishness.
[00:01:39] And here is why I think it is foolish.
[00:01:42] When you quit your job, and especially when you're not yet financially stable,
[00:01:48] it means that the pressure of earning money will fall on your passion from day one.
[00:01:56] From day one.
[00:01:57] Because you don't pay bills.
[00:01:59] You don't pay your life.
[00:02:00] So from day one itself, you will have to force your passion to start thinking about money.
[00:02:06] And that will convert your passion into your profession.
[00:02:11] Before you even got a chance to build that passion out.
[00:02:15] So let's say your passion is teaching.
[00:02:17] Your passion is singing.
[00:02:18] Your passion is dancing.
[00:02:19] There is no way that you're going to make money from that from day one.
[00:02:23] But because you don't have a money source now,
[00:02:25] because you've quit your job to follow your passion,
[00:02:28] you will be forced to now think of teaching, dancing, singing as a profession,
[00:02:35] as something you have to earn money from.
[00:02:38] You've basically killed your passion.
[00:02:41] So here is my three-step process in how you convert your passion into a profession.
[00:02:48] First, stay in your job.
[00:02:50] Stay in your job as long as it doesn't physically or emotionally harm you.
[00:02:54] So the job is not toxic.
[00:02:56] It pays the bills.
[00:02:58] Stay in that.
[00:03:00] Number two, work nights, weekends, holidays on your passion.
[00:03:05] Do everything that you need to do without putting the pressure of making money from it.
[00:03:10] Learn from your mistakes.
[00:03:12] Fail.
[00:03:13] Improvise.
[00:03:14] And continue doing it.
[00:03:15] Your job is paying the bills.
[00:03:17] Your passion is simply getting discovered.
[00:03:19] Step number three.
[00:03:21] When your passion income predictably becomes higher than your professional income,
[00:03:26] you can now consider quitting your job.
[00:03:29] That is how I would play it.
[00:03:31] At least three months where your passion income has been higher than your professional income.
[00:03:37] If you hit that, I think you are on a way to consider quitting your job.
[00:03:42] And it will not be a foolish decision if you do decide to do so.
[00:03:47] Remember, don't kill your passion the day you decide to raise it.
[00:03:53] Please give it time to nurture.
[00:03:57] Give it time to develop.
[00:03:59] Give it time to hone it.
[00:04:01] And the way to do that is to have financial stability.
[00:04:05] And for most of us, that will come by staying in a job.
[00:04:11] All the best.
