[00:00:00] This is True Crime Psychology and Personality, where we discuss the pathology behind some

[00:00:12] of the most horrific crimes and those who committed them from a scientifically informed

[00:00:17] perspective.

[00:00:18] I'm Dr. Todd Grande.

[00:00:21] I have a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision and I'm a licensed professional

[00:00:26] counselor of mental health.

[00:00:27] Dr. Todd Grande, that's my YouTube channel.

[00:00:31] Today's question is, can I analyze the case of Sean Combs?

[00:00:35] First, I'll look at the background of this case, move to the timeline of the controversies

[00:00:40] then offer my analysis.

[00:00:42] Sean Combs was born on November 4, 1969 in New York City.

[00:00:47] He was raised in Mount Vernon, New York.

[00:00:49] In 1987, Sean graduated from a Catholic high school.

[00:00:53] He attended Howard University, but dropped out after his second year.

[00:00:58] In 1990, Sean started working for Uptown Records in New York City and eventually became a talent

[00:01:04] director.

[00:01:05] In 1993, his employment was terminated.

[00:01:09] Sean started his own record label and ended up working with many well-known rappers

[00:01:14] and singers.

[00:01:16] In 1997, Sean recorded his own single as a rapper using the name Huff Daddy.

[00:01:22] This same year, he released his first album, which was very well received.

[00:01:26] Over the next few years, Sean went on to have a successful career.

[00:01:30] He produced several studio albums, was featured in movies and on TV shows.

[00:01:35] He started his own clothing line and went on several tours.

[00:01:40] He changed his stage name twice, going from Huff Daddy to P. Diddy and then from

[00:01:45] P. Diddy to Diddy.

[00:01:49] Now moving to the timeline of the controversies.

[00:01:52] In addition to his incredible success in the music industry, Sean has repeatedly demonstrated

[00:01:56] a phenomenal ability to attract the attention of law enforcement and to be involved in litigation.

[00:02:04] Here are just a few examples of various civil and criminal matters that Sean has been

[00:02:08] involved in.

[00:02:10] In 1991, Sean promoted a concert in a gymnasium at City College of New York.

[00:02:16] More attendees showed up than were expected and nine people died in a stampede trying to

[00:02:22] get into the gymnasium.

[00:02:25] An investigation revealed that Sean hired inexperienced security guards.

[00:02:30] He settled several lawsuits from family members of those who died.

[00:02:34] In April 1999, Sean was charged with assault after attacking a record executive with a

[00:02:39] champagne bottle.

[00:02:41] He pleaded guilty to harassment in September of that year.

[00:02:45] In December 1999, Sean and his girlfriend at the time, Jennifer Lopez, were at a club in

[00:02:51] Times Square in Midtown Manhattan.

[00:02:53] When a shooting occurred, Sean was arrested after the police found two firearms in his

[00:02:58] vehicle.

[00:02:59] He faced four weapons charges and one bribery charge but was found not guilty on all charges

[00:03:05] at his trial.

[00:03:07] In 2001, Sean was arrested in Florida for driving with a suspended license.

[00:03:12] In 2005, he was sued after allegedly attacking a television host.

[00:03:16] The case resolved in Sean's favor.

[00:03:19] In 2007, Sean was sued after allegedly punching a man outside a nightclub in Hollywood, California.

[00:03:26] The lawsuit was settled.

[00:03:28] In 2015, Sean became involved in a scuffle with his son's football coach.

[00:03:33] Allegedly, Sean was the aggressor but the district attorney did not file charges.

[00:03:39] In 2017, Sean was sued by his former personal chef.

[00:03:43] She claimed that he conducted harassment of a sexual nature.

[00:03:47] The lawsuit was settled.

[00:03:50] On November 16, 2023, a former partner of Sean's named Cassie Ventura filed a lawsuit

[00:03:56] accusing him of committing an assault of a sexual nature and other offenses.

[00:04:01] The lawsuit was settled the next day.

[00:04:04] A few days later, on November 23, a second woman filed a lawsuit against Sean making a

[00:04:10] similar claim.

[00:04:11] She indicated that he attacked her in 1991 and shared a recording of the incident with

[00:04:17] music industry workers.

[00:04:19] The same day, Sean was hit with yet another similar lawsuit from a third woman.

[00:04:24] She claimed that Sean and another man attacked her over 30 years earlier.

[00:04:29] On December 6, 2023, Sean would once again find himself accused of assault of a sexual

[00:04:35] nature.

[00:04:36] A woman said that he offended against her in 2003 when she was 17 years old.

[00:04:42] On February 26, 2024, a music producer named Rodney Jones filed a lawsuit claiming that

[00:04:47] Sean subjected him to misconduct of a sexual nature.

[00:04:53] Sean released a statement in response to many of the lawsuits which were filed against

[00:04:57] him.

[00:04:58] He said, quote,

[00:04:59] Enough is enough.

[00:05:01] For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character,

[00:05:07] destroy my reputation and my legacy.

[00:05:11] Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday.

[00:05:16] Let me be absolutely clear, I did not do any of the awful things being alleged.

[00:05:21] I will fight for my name, my family, and for the truth, unquote.

[00:05:26] It appears though the federal government was not on board with Sean's enough is enough

[00:05:30] sentiment.

[00:05:32] On March 25, 2024, federal agents raided properties connected to Sean Combs in Los Angeles and

[00:05:39] in Miami.

[00:05:40] Sean was confronted in an airport in Florida the same day and his phones were seized.

[00:05:45] However, officers allowed him to leave for a planned trip to the Caribbean.

[00:05:51] The government indicated that the raid was connected to allegations involving firearms,

[00:05:56] illegal narcotics, and offenses related to sex.

[00:06:00] Sean's attorney accused the government of using military level force to execute the

[00:06:04] search warrants and stated that Sean was innocent.

[00:06:08] Now moving to my analysis, here are my thoughts on a few areas that stood out to be in this

[00:06:13] case.

[00:06:14] Item number one, Sean Combs is facing several lawsuits which would be financially devastating

[00:06:20] to many people but may not matter a lot to him.

[00:06:24] His net worth is over $1 billion.

[00:06:28] During its peak, his record label generated $130 million in revenue a year.

[00:06:35] His own albums and singles bring in $100 million a year in royalties and his clothing business

[00:06:41] earns him over $500 million a year.

[00:06:45] This of course doesn't include his many other business ventures.

[00:06:49] All the accusations against Sean have come at a financial cost to him.

[00:06:54] For example, Macy's pulled all the products from Sean's clothing line and Hulu canceled

[00:06:59] a reality series that was planned but he still has a lot of resources.

[00:07:05] Sean's probably not concerned too much about the civil litigation as much as by the potential

[00:07:10] criminal proceedings.

[00:07:12] Item number two, it appears as though the behavior alleged in some of the lawsuits

[00:07:16] against Sean may serve as the foundation for criminal charges.

[00:07:20] I don't know if Sean is guilty of any wrongdoing or not but it doesn't look too good for him.

[00:07:25] He is facing many accusers who are telling similar stories.

[00:07:30] Furthermore, a few of them indicated that there are audio and video recordings of some

[00:07:34] of the alleged offenses.

[00:07:37] This is a bold statement to make if they are unable to produce anything which leads

[00:07:41] me to believe they are telling the truth.

[00:07:44] It's also possible that the government will uncover alleged conspirators and get them to

[00:07:48] testify against Sean.

[00:07:51] For example, on the same day of the raids an associate of Sean's named Brendan Paul

[00:07:56] was arrested on drug charges.

[00:07:58] One lawsuit indicated that Brendan was a drug mule for Sean.

[00:08:04] I would not be surprised if the authorities offered Brendan a deal to flip on Sean.

[00:08:09] Item number three, to get an idea of what could be going on with Sean's personality, let's

[00:08:14] take a look at the claims made against him in the lawsuit filed by Cassie Ventura.

[00:08:19] This is the one that was settled one day after being filed.

[00:08:23] Here is a summary of the allegations.

[00:08:26] In late 2005 or early 2006, 19-year-old Cassie Ventura met 37-year-old Sean Combs.

[00:08:34] In February 2006, Cassie signed a 10-album deal with Sean's record label.

[00:08:40] Early in their business relationship, Cassie heard rumors that Sean was interested in her

[00:08:44] romantically, but she was disgusted by him.

[00:08:48] At her 21st birthday, Cassie received an unwanted kiss from Sean.

[00:08:54] In 2007 they had sex for the first time when they were in Miami.

[00:08:59] After this, Sean rented Cassie an apartment in Manhattan and one in Los Angeles.

[00:09:04] He showered her with gifts including a motor vehicle and took care of many of her expenses.

[00:09:11] Sean appeared to be gaining control of her life.

[00:09:14] As they continued having sex, many of their encounters involved substance use.

[00:09:20] Over the course of a few years, Sean allegedly committed several offenses against Cassie.

[00:09:26] A few examples.

[00:09:27] He forced her to keep a gun in her purse, beat her in a Cadillac Escalade, kicked her in the

[00:09:33] face, arranged to have male sex workers engage in activity with Cassie as he watched, blew

[00:09:40] up a car owned by someone Cassie had dated as in used some type of explosive device to

[00:09:47] destroy a vehicle and in 2018 allegedly committed an assault of a sexual nature against

[00:09:53] Cassie.

[00:09:55] This is when Cassie left Sean.

[00:09:57] In the description of the allegations, Cassie indicated how powerful Sean was.

[00:10:02] He was aggressive, surrounded by enforcers and impossible to challenge.

[00:10:08] Cassie was stunned by how easily Sean was able to recruit other people to lie for him.

[00:10:13] If these allegations are true, it supports the theory that Sean is self-centered,

[00:10:18] reckless, impulsive, irresponsible, grandiose, hedonistic, manipulative and has a sense of

[00:10:24] entitlement.

[00:10:25] One could argue that Sean has these characteristics simply based on his criminal history, even

[00:10:30] if the allegations are not true.

[00:10:33] Item number four.

[00:10:34] What do I think happened in this case?

[00:10:36] This is just a theory, my opinion.

[00:10:39] To his credit, Sean Combs was able to build a billion dollar music empire.

[00:10:44] The more money he obtained and the more contacts with industry professionals he formed, the more

[00:10:49] powerful he became.

[00:10:51] Sean would impress his acquaintances with ostentatious displays of wealth and make it clear that

[00:10:56] he had seemingly unlimited financial resources.

[00:11:01] People wanted to be around him because of his success and fame.

[00:11:06] He attracted an entourage and hired employees who were extremely loyal to him.

[00:11:12] Taking this seemingly unassailable position, Sean mistreated people in various ways.

[00:11:17] In my opinion, most of his accusers are probably telling the truth and I wouldn't be surprised

[00:11:23] if criminal charges were on the way.

[00:11:26] The federal government typically does not raid properties of innocent people although

[00:11:30] one never knows.

[00:11:32] Throughout Sean's history, he has been the target of many allegations which were

[00:11:36] ultimately not proven.

[00:11:38] For example, attacking people, possessing weapons and having any discernible talent.

[00:11:44] Maybe all these allegations against him were fabricated and will represent yet another astonishing

[00:11:49] victory for Sean or maybe his golden age will be coming to an end.

[00:11:55] Now moving to my final thoughts.

[00:11:57] The case of Sean Combs can be summarized in this way.

[00:11:59] A rapper denoted as Puff Daddy, P Diddy and Diddy dominated the music domain with

[00:12:06] dazzling and dedicated distinction.

[00:12:09] His demeanor often displaying disorderly and dubious deeds dictated a deeply damaged

[00:12:14] dignity despite having devoted defenders.

[00:12:19] During a brief duration, dire accusations drenched his dynasty which led to a debate

[00:12:24] about what Diddy did or what Diddy didn't do.
