In today's episode, we're diving into the world of LinkedIn, where reports suggest the platform is dipping its toes into gaming with puzzle-based experiences like "Queens" and "Inference." But is LinkedIn playing games or getting serious about engagement? We'll discuss.
But first, let's talk funding. Milan's Talentware just secured €800,000 for its AI-driven SaaS platform, while NOVA, a freelancer hub, snagged $1.75M in seed funding. Talent management software is hot, folks, and NOVA's growth from a private Instagram page to a powerhouse in the freelance world is impressive.
Now, onto the self-serve saga. Big retailers like Dollar General, Target, and Walmart are rethinking self-checkout due to theft concerns and customer experience woes. Dollar General's pulling out self-checkouts in some stores, while Target's implementing "express self-checkout" with item limits. Who would've thought petty crime would lead to job creation?

[00:00:59] And Joel Cheesman are here to punch the recruiting industry right where hers.
[00:01:04] Complete with breaking news, brush opinion and loads of snot.
[00:01:08] Bottle up, boys and girls.
[00:01:09] It's on for The Chad and Cheese Podcasts.
[00:01:12] Oh yeah, because what happens in the red light district stays in the red light district.
[00:01:29] Hey kids you're listening to The Chad and Cheese Podcasts.
[00:01:32] I'm your co-host Joel Van Gogh Cheesman.
[00:01:36] This is Chad.
[00:01:37] Who gave me that fucking Yeager bomb so much?
[00:01:40] And on this week's show, LinkedIn plays games.
[00:01:43] Self checkout is fading and who do you rather?
[00:01:47] Let's do this.
[00:01:52] Okay listener, how can you help your employees become more productive?
[00:01:57] I have answers.
[00:01:58] How about automating manual and repetitive tasks, giving meaning to data,
[00:02:04] then allowing that data to actually drive decisions.
[00:02:07] And how about matching people to your jobs quicker?
[00:02:11] Well wait, The Chad and Cheese has a new LLM.
[00:02:15] No, Cheesman, I'm talking about text kernel.
[00:02:19] Okay that makes more sense.
[00:02:21] What I'm hearing is the groundbreaking concept of wait for it.
[00:02:26] Yeah simplicity.
[00:02:28] Seriously though, seriously.
[00:02:30] Text kernel cuts through the complexities like a tortilla chip through some hot nacho cheese.
[00:02:37] Really nacho references already.
[00:02:39] Anyways, text kernel brings efficiency and productivity to your operations.
[00:02:44] Text kernel seamlessly unifies your tools and data to drive efficiencies and success.
[00:02:51] Text kernel is creating new opportunities for your recruitment journey.
[00:02:56] Kind of like adding guac to my barbacoa burrito.
[00:03:00] Oh my god.
[00:03:01] How about extracting meaningful insights from data?
[00:03:04] I mean that's something swiftly matching people with jobs,
[00:03:08] automating repetitive tasks.
[00:03:10] Who knew such advanced concepts were even possible in the land of human resources?
[00:03:18] We did Chad.
[00:03:20] We did.
[00:03:20] Dude wrap it up.
[00:03:22] I'm a little hungry.
[00:03:23] Imagine that.
[00:03:24] Okay listener, get ready to use today's tech to drive efficiencies and productivity.
[00:03:29] Visit text kernel.com.
[00:03:32] That's t-e-x-t-k-e-r-n-e-l.com.
[00:03:39] Nachos.
[00:03:44] Yeah, I texted my wife that I had done a Yeager bomb and she said,
[00:03:47] what is it your 21st birthday?
[00:03:52] Yeah, when they came to the table, thanks Bill Borman.
[00:03:55] Thanks Bill Borman.
[00:03:57] It came to the table two handfuls of Yeager bombs.
[00:04:01] I'm like, what is this shit?
[00:04:03] What is going on here?
[00:04:04] I was just a welcome to Europe from Mr. Borman.
[00:04:08] I don't even remember what's in a Yeager bomb outside of Yeager.
[00:04:12] Is it cool?
[00:04:13] Is it Red Bull?
[00:04:14] Like what?
[00:04:14] I think it is.
[00:04:15] Okay, Red Bull and yeah, awesome.
[00:04:20] Homeboy is not human.
[00:04:23] He's like the Winston Churchill.
[00:04:25] Have you ever seen the Winston Churchill daily diet?
[00:04:29] It's like scotch and cigars all day.
[00:04:31] And he lived to 90.
[00:04:32] That's Bill Borman.
[00:04:33] Yeah, except Borman doesn't do cigars.
[00:04:37] He just doubles up on the scotch.
[00:04:39] Yeah, and the no sleep thing.
[00:04:41] I think Churchill got some sleep while he was busy finding the Nazis.
[00:04:46] But I mean, Borman is only like 30 years old.
[00:04:49] So.
[00:04:53] It's taken a toll.
[00:04:54] It's taken a toll.
[00:04:56] Yeah, he's not quite 90 yet.
[00:04:58] He only only looks at love that guy.
[00:05:01] Love that guy.
[00:05:02] Yeah, it's so nice.
[00:05:04] Leven Van Evenhausen and Rika Copenson too bad either.
[00:05:08] My god, we had a blast yesterday.
[00:05:10] Well, the great show.
[00:05:11] So yeah, we failed to mention that we're recording from Amsterdam.
[00:05:14] We are at the E Recruitment Congress.
[00:05:16] Amsterdam.
[00:05:18] Which is usually in Belgium, but they put it in Amsterdam this year.
[00:05:23] What a great conference.
[00:05:25] What a hidden gem that most of people in states have no idea or in Europe.
[00:05:30] The music about?
[00:05:31] Yeah, it's this multi-billion dollar company,
[00:05:35] Bain Capital.
[00:05:36] They're growing this Congress.
[00:05:38] It could be an up and coming thing that becomes mainstream for everybody.
[00:05:44] All a rec fest and unleashed, but great conference.
[00:05:47] And I love how they utilize us.
[00:05:50] Yeah, they put us in the balcony.
[00:05:52] I'll hold up it guys.
[00:05:55] And so many conferences, you get a presentation.
[00:05:58] And they like, does anyone have a question in the audience?
[00:06:01] And it's this awkward sort of moment where who's going to ask the question?
[00:06:05] What's it going to be?
[00:06:06] You got to run the microphone to the person that raises their hands.
[00:06:09] It's just awkward.
[00:06:10] Yeah, so with this setup, the presentation goes.
[00:06:14] They know they're going to get Q&A.
[00:06:15] They sit down on the couch.
[00:06:17] We hit them with a little banter, little questions.
[00:06:21] And I think it runs much more smoothly.
[00:06:24] I think more conferences should have journalists, podcasters, bloggers,
[00:06:27] whatever they're there to ask questions right after their session.
[00:06:31] I think it's great.
[00:06:32] Yeah, agreed, agreed.
[00:06:34] Yeah, and I am ready, just about ready,
[00:06:37] to wrap up this world win tour.
[00:06:39] Julien, I went to Vegas and that's when we left the house.
[00:06:43] Then we spent a couple of days in Houston doing visa stuff for Portugal.
[00:06:48] And then we came straight here from Houston.
[00:06:50] So it's been a whirlwind trip.
[00:06:53] It's been a blast.
[00:06:54] The Europeans are amazing.
[00:06:56] They always make it fun and they always want to show you around.
[00:07:00] Hope I get to see everybody.
[00:07:01] If I don't, I'm sorry.
[00:07:03] I'll see you next time.
[00:07:04] It's so laid back and chill here.
[00:07:06] I love it.
[00:07:07] So you're here for a few more days.
[00:07:08] You leave one Saturday?
[00:07:10] Yeah, even Saturday afternoon.
[00:07:12] Yep.
[00:07:12] So I'm headed out.
[00:07:13] I've never been to Germany.
[00:07:15] So I'm just going to take a few days.
[00:07:16] Gonna go to Dusseldorf.
[00:07:18] Where Bill Bournemann is going to be.
[00:07:20] I'm going to try to avoid him as much as possible.
[00:07:23] He's got a little valk thing there.
[00:07:25] Apparently I'm trying to try to...
[00:07:26] I'm doubling down on my penicillin
[00:07:28] so I don't catch the valk while I'm in Dusseldorf.
[00:07:30] Good call.
[00:07:31] And then I'm headed to...
[00:07:32] We call it Cologne.
[00:07:34] But apparently it's Cologne or Cologne.
[00:07:38] Anyway, I'll be there for a couple of days flying out of there
[00:07:40] coming back Saturday and then we get a good month or so off of travel.
[00:07:44] So we're covering time.
[00:07:46] It is weird how we...
[00:07:48] I mean Americans can try to...
[00:07:49] America,
[00:07:50] Fie all the...
[00:07:52] And maybe it's not just us.
[00:07:53] Maybe it's the rest of the English-speaking world.
[00:07:55] But yeah, the way that you spill Cologne
[00:07:58] is K-O-L.
[00:08:00] Oh, how's it new, Malt?
[00:08:01] K-O-L-N, right?
[00:08:03] So Cologne.
[00:08:04] And but we call it Cologne.
[00:08:05] So I've found...
[00:08:06] Yeah, it's probably like Cologne.
[00:08:08] Cologne.
[00:08:09] Okay, well this is an abbreviated show.
[00:08:12] We're both pretty hungover
[00:08:14] which if you're watching on YouTube
[00:08:15] you can figure that out.
[00:08:17] If not, it's definitely in Chad's voice.
[00:08:19] I think my voice might be a little better this morning.
[00:08:23] We'll get back to the birthdays
[00:08:24] but we cannot fail to mention that.
[00:08:27] If you like free stuff go to chachys.com
[00:08:29] click the free link.
[00:08:31] We're getting new t-shirts printed up
[00:08:33] so those will be going...
[00:08:35] Now shortly we got
[00:08:37] bourbon selection from Texcarnel.
[00:08:39] Free beer from Aspen Tech Labs.
[00:08:41] And if it's your birthday...
[00:08:43] If it's your birthday month you might just win.
[00:08:46] Rum.
[00:08:47] Rum from...
[00:08:48] Rum.
[00:08:49] And if I can find the sound bite that everybody loves
[00:08:52] we can maybe at least give people some of that.
[00:08:56] There you go.
[00:08:57] Did you feel the tension in the air
[00:09:00] right now?
[00:09:01] I know I can.
[00:09:02] I can feel all the way down in my pocket.
[00:09:03] I could feel a little kebou
[00:09:05] in my plums last night.
[00:09:07] If you haven't enjoyed some kebou kids
[00:09:10] that's right.
[00:09:11] The...
[00:09:12] Mario Sensation
[00:09:15] yeah, kebou.
[00:09:16] Alright that's...
[00:09:17] If you're in our socials
[00:09:18] you've probably seen the kebou.
[00:09:20] That's enough of that this morning.
[00:09:22] Yeah that's enough of that.
[00:09:23] I want to thank
[00:09:26] you know
[00:09:27] here Jan who is here we got to see him
[00:09:29] and then also
[00:09:31] got to see
[00:09:32] Head Hard from Texcarnel.
[00:09:33] T-shirt that you're wearing
[00:09:34] if you're watching on YouTube.
[00:09:36] I didn't see her hard.
[00:09:37] I didn't get my her eye time.
[00:09:39] I'm very upset about that.
[00:09:41] So yeah, I got the Texcarnel right.
[00:09:42] He's ducking in trying to duck you.
[00:09:44] He's a busy guy.
[00:09:45] I get it.
[00:09:46] I get it.
[00:09:47] He's a busy guy just like the news
[00:09:50] from this video.
[00:09:52] Topics!
[00:09:55] Alright little LinkedIn goodness.
[00:09:58] Reports say LinkedIn is venturing
[00:10:00] into gaming with puzzle-based experiences
[00:10:03] like
[00:10:04] queens and
[00:10:06] inference.
[00:10:07] Why do this you ask?
[00:10:08] Well they're apparently aiming to
[00:10:10] increase user engagement
[00:10:12] and deepen connections
[00:10:13] expanding beyond its traditional
[00:10:15] professional focus chat.
[00:10:17] Is LinkedIn just playing games here?
[00:10:20] Or are they really serious this time?
[00:10:22] Ah.
[00:10:24] It's so bad.
[00:10:26] Yeah, I get the whole sticky part but
[00:10:28] this to me doesn't make any sense and
[00:10:30] this is not going to
[00:10:31] how's it going to deepen connections?
[00:10:33] I mean I can see that you maybe play
[00:10:35] world with like a kidding.
[00:10:36] Like a kidding.
[00:10:36] The hours dialogue model.
[00:10:38] I mean I just it doesn't make any sense.
[00:10:40] Not to mention you're talking about
[00:10:41] professional network
[00:10:43] which on the professional side of the house
[00:10:45] you want to stay with productivity
[00:10:47] and productivity in games
[00:10:49] don't kind of go together.
[00:10:50] So instead of doing my jobs on you know
[00:10:52] my job are my project.
[00:10:54] I'm on LinkedIn
[00:10:56] playing a crossword puzzle or some stupid
[00:10:58] shit who knows what kind of
[00:11:00] fucked up games LinkedIn is going to play.
[00:11:03] But I just can't say it enough.
[00:11:06] LinkedIn needs to revitalize the platform itself.
[00:11:10] It needs to stop adding stupid shit on it.
[00:11:13] They've had what the videos and the
[00:11:15] Instagram and the podcast and all
[00:11:17] these things that just kind of like
[00:11:18] were thrown there
[00:11:20] and they really they haven't gotten any traction.
[00:11:23] Right. I mean you could say
[00:11:24] they've been utter failures while
[00:11:27] the infrastructure that is linked in
[00:11:29] is decades old.
[00:11:31] So I don't understand why they're spending
[00:11:34] so much time with these stupid little
[00:11:36] projects when they have a big issue
[00:11:38] when the Titanic
[00:11:40] is sinking
[00:11:42] you don't rearrange the jet chairs okay?
[00:11:45] I like that.
[00:11:45] I like that.
[00:11:46] 60% of the time it works
[00:11:49] every time.
[00:11:50] So when I first read this headline I thought
[00:11:52] oh they're introducing some sort of like
[00:11:55] trade-ify,
[00:11:56] pymetrics,
[00:11:58] visual assessment gaming thing.
[00:12:00] No no this is like
[00:12:02] chess or checkers on LinkedIn
[00:12:06] which is
[00:12:07] I just don't get it
[00:12:09] maybe it's a 20% extra time thing
[00:12:12] but they would be much more served if they did
[00:12:15] if they were creating some sort of
[00:12:16] visual assessment that people could take
[00:12:18] as part of their LinkedIn experience.
[00:12:21] So that was kind of a bummer.
[00:12:23] Look I agree with you they need to focus on the
[00:12:26] blocking and tackling
[00:12:28] their job search sucks we've talked about
[00:12:30] that pretty extensively
[00:12:32] stability of the platform.
[00:12:34] All that stuff can be improved
[00:12:36] for sure why they're wasting time
[00:12:38] and resources on games is kind of ridiculous.
[00:12:41] I mean just open up an app store
[00:12:42] and have people develop games
[00:12:44] like Facebook if you're going to do that.
[00:12:46] Which actually would be kind of interesting
[00:12:47] if LinkedIn opened up
[00:12:49] an app store.
[00:12:50] And you mentioned the video like
[00:12:53] I actually think they may they may have bailed on video too quickly
[00:12:56] oh yeah just for our video experience
[00:12:59] the shorts that we put out are very popular.
[00:13:03] I mean they had shorts
[00:13:04] maybe they could have put it within the feed
[00:13:06] as opposed to like just up at top.
[00:13:09] I mean there's there are ways to increase engagement
[00:13:12] that video brings
[00:13:13] that they just scrapped and I think
[00:13:15] that would be a much better idea to bring back stories
[00:13:17] just do it better
[00:13:19] and learn from what TikTok and Reels has done
[00:13:22] to get more engagement but yeah I'm
[00:13:25] I don't get the games.
[00:13:26] I think that's it's just really stupid
[00:13:28] it was kind of seen in the wild
[00:13:29] maybe it's a big experiment
[00:13:31] that got loose it shouldn't have
[00:13:32] but if LinkedIn becomes this games platform
[00:13:35] like it could be a jump the shark moment
[00:13:38] I don't know.
[00:13:39] Well I think what you're seeing is
[00:13:41] it's an advertising play
[00:13:42] and they need people to stay
[00:13:43] on the platform longer to click on more shit
[00:13:46] they at least see more shit
[00:13:47] right so you get the impressions
[00:13:48] that are playing through.
[00:13:50] They're trying it feels like
[00:13:52] they're trying their damnedest
[00:13:54] to be an advertising platform
[00:13:56] right with a bunch of professionals on it.
[00:13:59] Fix the videos.
[00:14:00] Yeah.
[00:14:00] Fix the shorts.
[00:14:01] Yeah.
[00:14:01] Fix the shorts.
[00:14:02] You could do some things
[00:14:04] you could do some really amazing things
[00:14:06] with videos
[00:14:07] with I mean there are connectivity
[00:14:09] opportunities within LinkedIn
[00:14:11] there always happen right.
[00:14:12] That's where ads are going
[00:14:14] that's everyone's creating tick talk ads
[00:14:16] reals yeah like do die
[00:14:18] I don't get it.
[00:14:19] The LinkedIn lives I mean people do them
[00:14:21] but they a lot of them don't get
[00:14:23] they don't really get the traction
[00:14:26] but still they're using it
[00:14:28] I think they could amp that up
[00:14:29] they could use more of that
[00:14:30] they could they could actually do
[00:14:31] like Riverside does
[00:14:33] we go into Riverside after
[00:14:35] we're done
[00:14:36] we click Magic Clips
[00:14:38] and it creates like 20 different
[00:14:40] snippet videos of our
[00:14:43] of our podcast
[00:14:44] it's easy or an opus clip
[00:14:46] or something like that
[00:14:47] they could do something like that
[00:14:48] you would have a you know
[00:14:49] you're linked in live
[00:14:51] and you can turn shorts into
[00:14:52] I mean there's just
[00:14:53] it could be a content generating
[00:14:55] machine but they're doing
[00:14:57] stupid shit like playing chess
[00:15:00] but again
[00:15:01] if they were doing something
[00:15:03] I mean I don't want to talk
[00:15:04] about the popping
[00:15:05] the balloon of
[00:15:06] pie metrics which I think is
[00:15:08] the stupidest fucking games
[00:15:10] we've ever seen
[00:15:10] and they say this measures your
[00:15:12] risk tolerance
[00:15:12] no it doesn't
[00:15:13] you're fucking stupid
[00:15:14] right
[00:15:15] we even heard
[00:15:16] Hilke Schoeman who
[00:15:18] spoke this week
[00:15:19] who wrote the book called
[00:15:22] Algorithm
[00:15:22] she was on the show a few months
[00:15:24] back
[00:15:25] even talking about how stupid
[00:15:26] that shit is
[00:15:27] if there was something
[00:15:28] that could be used
[00:15:31] chess
[00:15:31] you know
[00:15:32] I mean there are all
[00:15:33] these different things
[00:15:33] rankings and what not
[00:15:36] that would help
[00:15:38] understand
[00:15:39] you know maybe mental fitness
[00:15:40] or something of that
[00:15:41] nature that might make sense
[00:15:42] but I still think it's
[00:15:43] outside of the
[00:15:44] tam
[00:15:45] of linked in
[00:15:46] fixed video
[00:15:47] and by the way
[00:15:48] Microsoft owns team
[00:15:49] switches a video platform
[00:15:50] like it can be that hard
[00:15:51] to integrate
[00:15:52] some video shit
[00:15:53] partner
[00:15:54] I don't get it
[00:15:55] I don't get it
[00:15:55] let's take a quick break
[00:15:57] okay
[00:15:57] I need a new
[00:15:58] honey and other glass of water
[00:15:59] and we'll talk
[00:16:00] a little
[00:16:00] who'd you rather
[00:16:05] human resources
[00:16:06] is supposed to be about humans
[00:16:08] I mean it's right there in the name
[00:16:10] but when your hiring team
[00:16:11] is more like an assembly line
[00:16:13] glued to their computers
[00:16:14] manually posting heaps of jobs
[00:16:17] everywhere they can think of
[00:16:18] that human part feels nowhere to be found
[00:16:21] this is a new era
[00:16:22] pandawikew takes the mind numbing copy pasting
[00:16:25] and nerve-wracking guesswork out
[00:16:27] of the job posting process
[00:16:28] when you plan a hiring campaign
[00:16:30] with pandawikew
[00:16:31] you tell us who you need
[00:16:32] then before you ever spend a cent
[00:16:34] we predict what it will cost to find them
[00:16:36] pandawikew chooses the ideal recruiting sites
[00:16:39] from thousands of options
[00:16:40] targeting the ones your next great hire frequently visits
[00:16:43] then fires off your ads
[00:16:44] at precisely calculated times
[00:16:46] surfacing the most relevant applicants
[00:16:48] for you to pick from
[00:16:49] now you're free to get to know the best talent
[00:16:52] build great teams
[00:16:53] and take care of your humans
[00:16:55] pandawikew will do the rest
[00:16:56] so you can get back to doing
[00:16:57] what the computers can't
[00:16:59] for more information on pandawikew
[00:17:01] go to pandologic.com
[00:17:04] that's pandologic.com
[00:17:07] all right Chad
[00:17:10] it's time to play a little game
[00:17:12] that we like to call
[00:17:16] who'd your rather if you haven't
[00:17:18] heard us play this from before
[00:17:20] we talk about two startups
[00:17:22] that have gotten funding and Chad and I
[00:17:24] decide who'd your rather
[00:17:26] I'm happy
[00:17:28] all right let's play here we go
[00:17:29] and then
[00:17:30] corner number one we got melons
[00:17:33] talentware
[00:17:34] founded by bane alumni they've secured 800,000 euros
[00:17:38] for their a i driven SaaS platform
[00:17:40] which aids companies and talent
[00:17:42] management development and retention
[00:17:44] through personalized skills-based approaches
[00:17:48] funding aims to enhance team
[00:17:49] and foster growth that is talentware
[00:17:54] next up we have nova
[00:17:56] a freelancer hub they've secured 1.75 million
[00:17:59] and seed funding the startup aims
[00:18:01] to empower creative freelancers and bring gaps
[00:18:04] in talent management the app facilitates
[00:18:06] connections
[00:18:07] job postings and career growth so that
[00:18:10] gives us talentware
[00:18:12] and nova chat who'd you
[00:18:13] about oh this is a hard one i'm
[00:18:16] going to let you go first i'm
[00:18:17] i'm not gonna think either one of these
[00:18:19] guys right at at 2 a.m i'm not sure
[00:18:21] which one i walk home with so i'm
[00:18:23] gonna first i'm still thinking
[00:18:26] in my clouded brain yager brain this
[00:18:28] morning on this okay okay well uh i'm
[00:18:30] going to stay consistent with with talent
[00:18:33] these these sort of secondary
[00:18:36] players that look at bigger companies
[00:18:39] that have a lot more money a lot more brand
[00:18:40] awareness a lot more resources you know
[00:18:43] the lattices the deals yeah uh the glutes
[00:18:47] the list goes on and on bob uh
[00:18:50] look talent management software
[00:18:52] is a very competitive space and you can
[00:18:54] say like well they they've proven the
[00:18:56] model it's an in-demand product but i
[00:18:58] just think when you bring a squirt
[00:19:00] gun to a gun fight uh it's not going to
[00:19:03] end very well for you uh my prediction
[00:19:05] is within 24 months these guys are
[00:19:07] probably fold up or sell to a bigger
[00:19:10] fish nova i originally thought well this
[00:19:13] is kind of like camino uh which is has
[00:19:16] a head start maybe you know so i'm
[00:19:19] never quite understood why commune
[00:19:21] commune hasn't taken off more than it
[00:19:23] has they had a great start uh helping
[00:19:25] with uh some directors video
[00:19:29] production but this thing is really
[00:19:31] interesting in the organic nature of it
[00:19:34] so in less than a year they've uh started
[00:19:37] as a private instagram page sharing
[00:19:39] job postings for freelancers they've
[00:19:42] grown over 19,000 followers and they
[00:19:44] filled over 8,000 jobs uh and say that
[00:19:47] they've helped book nearly ten
[00:19:50] million dollars in work they've got
[00:19:53] investors from Spotify Tesla and
[00:19:56] Burberry it feels kind of like Craigslist
[00:19:58] where they just kind of threw up something
[00:20:00] and the community embraced it
[00:20:03] and they've run with it so for me like uh
[00:20:07] what i think the better business might be
[00:20:09] the talent management i think it's way too
[00:20:11] competitive for what uh what uh talent
[00:20:13] where he's doing so for me uh nova is a
[00:20:17] supernova my friend and that is what
[00:20:20] i'd rather bad bad okay so i thought
[00:20:24] nova was interesting especially
[00:20:28] spinning out of instagram an instagram
[00:20:31] account i mean that that's just you
[00:20:34] you don't hear that much right well this
[00:20:36] worked on instagram it's a great way
[00:20:38] to at least start to see if an idea gains
[00:20:41] traction and they and they found traction
[00:20:43] right they they did found fine traction
[00:20:45] down the talent where you're excited how
[00:20:46] you're you're right not too much and they're
[00:20:48] they're in Milan right so they're in
[00:20:49] Italy um which means more than likely
[00:20:52] they are going to try to uh take this to
[00:20:55] Europe as a whole. Italy's not a great market
[00:20:58] to try to to start in yep um they there's
[00:21:01] not a lot of cash in Italy compared to
[00:21:04] trying to start in in Germany or France
[00:21:07] or the UK right um but then again you have all
[00:21:11] the issues of languages and culture and
[00:21:14] and for me again for us learning a lot of
[00:21:17] this over the last you know few years
[00:21:19] here in you Europe and working with a lot of
[00:21:21] European organizations to me with something
[00:21:25] like you said that is so competitive number
[00:21:28] one number two the tam is so big number three
[00:21:32] it's in Europe i mean how much more
[00:21:33] complex can you fucking get yeah um they do
[00:21:36] have cash they do have backers uh they smart
[00:21:39] smart dudes but i think nova has proven
[00:21:42] itself it is a very small tam by the way
[00:21:45] so i but i think they can grow out of that uh
[00:21:48] i think there's there's a there there right and
[00:21:51] when we're talking about commuton i think one of
[00:21:53] the hardest things is you know the guys we
[00:21:56] know the guys over commuton love those guys
[00:21:58] um they know the people in the industry the only
[00:22:01] problem is they don't know they're recruiting
[00:22:02] in the gig industry right yeah um that's where a lot
[00:22:06] of companies fall down just because you know
[00:22:09] the industry that you're going into doesn't
[00:22:12] mean that you can recruit into that industry
[00:22:15] you can gig into that industry you can create
[00:22:17] technology that is sticky linked in in that
[00:22:20] industry right so uh yeah i'm gonna i'm gonna go
[00:22:23] with the little very small although i think
[00:22:26] powerful nova what are you doing all right
[00:22:30] that's true for nova everybody and that
[00:22:33] closes another round of who do you rather
[00:22:36] we're going to take a quick break remember folks
[00:22:38] listen to the ads there is no show without
[00:22:41] sponsors when we get back we'll talk a little
[00:22:43] self-service and it may not be what you're
[00:22:45] thinking of are you struggling to attract
[00:22:50] the talent you need today do you lack
[00:22:52] visibility into where your recruitment ad
[00:22:54] dollars are really going there's a better
[00:22:56] way acquire ROI is a programmatic job

[00:23:40] all right chat is this the end of self serve check out big
[00:23:44] retailers like dollar general target and Walmart
[00:23:48] are scaling back on self checkout due to theft
[00:23:50] concerns and customer experience issues dollar
[00:23:54] general is removing self checkouts from some
[00:23:57] stores and limiting purchases and others
[00:23:59] target implements express self checkout with
[00:24:03] a limited number of items and Walmart is
[00:24:05] toying with Walmart plus members only
[00:24:09] getting self checkout is this the end and it's
[00:24:12] full service back in Chad your thoughts
[00:24:14] yeah well first and foremost we're in Amsterdam right now
[00:24:17] so there's no such thing as self service you've
[00:24:19] got full service at the red light district all
[00:24:22] you gotta do is go window shopping and there's
[00:24:24] full service right there yes um yeah this to me
[00:24:28] and I hate to take a dark turn here but this is
[00:24:31] what happens when uh the poverty line starts
[00:24:34] moving up hmm people start stealing shit
[00:24:36] people aren't doing this we're not seeing the rise in
[00:24:39] crime and stealing shit because um they they want
[00:24:43] the high quality target uh you know uh genes
[00:24:47] or you know clothes or what have you it's because
[00:24:50] they they need the food I mean it's just it's
[00:24:52] one of those things and they see gaps in security
[00:24:56] so therefore they take it right and they also
[00:24:58] called back to the article in uh around the
[00:25:01] pandemic saying that the pandemic it was great
[00:25:03] through the pandemic because you they didn't have to have
[00:25:06] people and obviously you know you had space and so on and so
[00:25:09] forth but they were doing self checkout way before
[00:25:11] the fucking pandemic right uh so I see I think we're
[00:25:15] we're seeing something happen here um that
[00:25:18] people are trying to they're trying to associate
[00:25:22] with something that it's not I think this is a poverty
[00:25:25] issue I think that wages it haven't climbed fast enough
[00:25:28] right yes wages are getting better but they haven't
[00:25:31] climbed fast enough and they're definitely not
[00:25:34] climbing as fast as the fucking CEO pay that's out there um
[00:25:37] so we start seeing this kind of like spiral into the
[00:25:41] poverty when the poverty line raises we see these
[00:25:44] things happen so it's unfortunate it really is
[00:25:47] because I think this is a societal problem uh
[00:25:50] and when you're talking about some of these
[00:25:52] locations like San Francisco San Francisco is
[00:25:55] an expensive fucking place to live right I mean
[00:25:59] it just is and don't just think this is happening on the
[00:26:02] coast this is happening everywhere that escalated
[00:26:04] quickly sorry so so I'll try to stay away from the
[00:26:08] the politics of this uh the other side of that argument would be
[00:26:12] that crime punishment has declined anything under a
[00:26:16] thousand dollars you can just walk out of the store and
[00:26:18] not get prosecuted so is it is it the left argument
[00:26:21] or right the fact is it's happening yeah earnings
[00:26:24] call out earnings call is like we're we're
[00:26:27] feeling this pain there's shrinkage people are hungry
[00:26:29] people are hungry doesn't matter doesn't matter but
[00:26:33] it's happening what what ironic to me is yeah
[00:26:37] we're gonna employ more people because of this
[00:26:40] yeah we're going to employ more people uh checking
[00:26:43] people out as a result of whether it's crime poverty
[00:26:47] whatever um and I guess that's a good thing uh
[00:26:51] you know I not to sound the latest I've never stepped into a
[00:26:55] dollar general um but my impression is that they
[00:26:59] are not the best places in the world to shop uh
[00:27:02] they're eliminating self-checkout altogether so that means a lot more
[00:27:05] people employed uh by dollar general for better words
[00:27:09] target and I've shopped it target yeah and
[00:27:12] people bring the cart to self-check out and it is it is like a snake line
[00:27:17] it's ridiculous it's waiting and it's almost you're almost incentivized
[00:27:21] to go to the full service because there's nobody in line so
[00:27:24] I mean target it feels just more like yes whether it's theft I don't think
[00:27:28] there's as much poverty poverty target or or people that are
[00:27:31] desperate it's just assholes who want to check out
[00:27:34] 48 items uh in the self-checkout so good for them for saying like look it's 10
[00:27:39] items which has probably always been 10 items people
[00:27:42] just ignore it the Walmart's a little odd to me I know they want to be uh
[00:27:46] Amazon I know they want these prime members these wallopless
[00:27:49] members and it's kind of a nice little incentive they
[00:27:51] probably have an issue there as well with people
[00:27:53] loading up the cart and then trying to get out so
[00:27:56] ultimately this means more jobs it probably means a better shopping
[00:28:00] experience uh at least for me a target and all the moms the soccer
[00:28:05] moms that are there uh getting there you know
[00:28:07] getting their fragrances in their in their dockers uh
[00:28:11] so um yeah I got nothing else but that and I'm sorry folks
[00:28:16] I usually have a witty way to end the show uh
[00:28:19] I'm hungover and I don't have one I'm sorry Chad you got anything funny
[00:28:22] you got any funny in the show I guess we could just rinse in in some keboo
[00:28:26] that might be okay boobie okay boobie right
[00:28:29] you're welcome world welcome no witty unending
[00:28:34] just this is your opinion just some keboo I gotta say coming out of a lunch
[00:28:41] break straight into keboo was freaking awesome I mean
[00:28:46] in for those who weren't at the con for at the congress
[00:28:51] it was hilarious everybody gets back in after lunch we're all you know
[00:28:55] you get kind of like the the cloudy brain because all your
[00:29:00] all the blood in your head is in your stomach right
[00:29:03] uh so you can't think well they wheel out keboo
[00:29:06] keboo yeah you know and it just like amps the whole crowd up
[00:29:09] and that gets that gets the whole uh the whole
[00:29:12] afternoon that's the tone for the afternoon so I think
[00:29:16] at least leave it if you're listening
[00:29:18] keboo should be a staple should be a staple guy should get in his van from Finland
[00:29:24] and drive all those corg kebards uh huh to wherever
[00:29:29] they're having the e-recruitment congress every year some of the most European
