For Episode 40, I'm joined by Nadia Dalimonte & Giovanni Lago to discuss the current state of the television landscape as we head into the 2024 Emmy Awards Season. We talk about the shows we've been watching (and need to catch up on), which winners from the Critics Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Awards might carry over to the Emmys, who we feel are the early frontrunners and we also answer your fan-submitted questions! [00:00:00] And the Emmy goes to, and the Emmy goes to, and the Emmy goes to, Breaking Back.

[00:00:07] Modern family,

[00:00:10] The Ground,

[00:00:14] Hello everyone and welcome to the Next Best Series Podcast where we talk about television

[00:00:20] under the Next Best Picture umbrella.

[00:00:23] We are back doing this.

[00:00:24] We do it only for a portion of the year around the Emmy season which is what we are officially

[00:00:30] in now.

[00:00:32] You have a couple of shows that have been around for quite a while, that even have been

[00:00:38] rewarded during this past Oscar season at Golden Globes Acritic's Choice and the Screen

[00:00:43] Actors Guild Awards.

[00:00:44] And then you have shows that are currently airing right now that people are watching.

[00:00:49] And then there are some that are going to be released over the next couple of weeks

[00:00:52] all the way up until that May 31st deadline to compete this year for the Emmy Awards.

[00:00:59] Here to join me to welcome us back to the World of Television this week I have, Nadia Dalamate.

[00:01:05] Hi everyone.

[00:01:08] And Giovanni Lago.

[00:01:09] Hello.

[00:01:10] Alright so what we are going to do for this episode is we are going to get everyone up

[00:01:17] to speed on what we have been watching and what has happened so far at the Critics Choice

[00:01:24] Golden Globe and SAG Awards.

[00:01:27] Now those who listen to the regular MVP Podcast know what happened at those award shows.

[00:01:34] We are not going to just simply say oh the obvious because everybody knows what one.

[00:01:38] We know what one.

[00:01:40] But what I want to know from you guys is I want to know are those winners, whichever ones

[00:01:46] are carrying over because let's face it something like succession for example is over.

[00:01:51] It's not competing for this year's Emmy Awards.

[00:01:53] Are these winners going to translate come Emmy Award time?

[00:01:58] That's the question that's on my mind for this week's episode.

[00:02:02] So what I want to do is first start off with what everyone has been watching this season

[00:02:09] so far and Nadia we can start off with you.

[00:02:13] I know that as we go over the next couple of weeks we are going to be catching up with

[00:02:16] more and more stuff is going to be premiering but for now what have you been watching that

[00:02:21] you've been enjoying?

[00:02:22] Yeah I am definitely playing catch up with television but over the past couple days I have started

[00:02:29] getting back into the swing of things trying to keep up for Emmy season so I watched

[00:02:34] the first three episodes of the Marvel animated series X-Men 97.

[00:02:41] I've been hearing a lot of people say that this is excellent.

[00:02:45] Yeah I mean the reviews were really enticing to me.

[00:02:48] I mean for those who have seen the original X-Men animated series from the 90s this new

[00:02:53] series is essentially a continuation of that narrative and then for those like me who

[00:02:59] haven't seen that original I think X-Men 97 also works really well as a standalone piece.

[00:03:06] I mean I've seen some of the X-Men live action movies but I wouldn't say that I'm especially

[00:03:11] well versed in that universe and the Marvel Universe in general so I was a little hesitant

[00:03:16] to kind of dive into this one but the reviews as I said got me interested and I think it's

[00:03:24] really so far a very welcoming series for newer fans or for those who might not know

[00:03:30] about the characters in as much detail.

[00:03:34] It's pretty engaging and retaining so far and really through the writing you really get

[00:03:39] a strong sense of the thematic layers that X-Men tackles.

[00:03:43] The animation is really great and playful like kind of feels like watching a retro cartoon

[00:03:48] on a Saturday morning.

[00:03:50] The first episode was a little shaky for me but three episodes in I feel like I'm pretty

[00:03:56] much on board and I'm looking forward to the next one and I got to say as well I'm

[00:04:01] a big fan of horror and the third episode has a really fantastic call back to horror movies

[00:04:06] which was really unexpected.

[00:04:08] It's sort of like a love letter to the horror genre which I enjoyed a lot so there's

[00:04:12] quite a bit here that I'm really jelling with so I'm looking forward to seeing where

[00:04:17] that goes.

[00:04:18] Nice nice all around.

[00:04:21] Gio I know that you keep up with television pretty much year round.

[00:04:27] Yes.

[00:04:28] So, I couldn't ask you to list everything because we would be here all night but what

[00:04:32] have been some of the standouts for you?

[00:04:34] I'm not trying to keep it towards this year instead of like you know the show is that carried

[00:04:39] over than our season but like if I did mention something I would mention the curse which

[00:04:44] I thought started at the end of the last year and finished at the beginning of 2024.

[00:04:50] Brilliant, many series by the Safty brother Benny and Nathan Fielder it's the most perfect

[00:04:57] blending of both their styles so if you think it's like wow this is the rehearsal on steroids

[00:05:02] and then on Cudgem's mixed in.

[00:05:04] It yeah it is and it's excruciating painful to watch and Emma Stone personally to me if

[00:05:10] you thought what she did and bore things was like brilliant what she does in the curse

[00:05:14] is unreal and probably one of the more terrifying like performances I've seen in recent memory.

[00:05:21] Another show that carried over that was really good that I enjoyed was Fargo season 5.

[00:05:25] I as someone you know haven't watched every season of Fargo I watched you know when it started

[00:05:30] and kind of dipped in and out.

[00:05:32] The consensus is by many that this is like the best the show has been since it started.

[00:05:37] John Ham I think also probably is the best thing he's done since Mad Men.

[00:05:41] He is amazing everyone in the show is amazing but just the fact that we're getting like great

[00:05:46] John Ham performances still and he's starting to you know get back in the groove of things

[00:05:49] I'm loving it.

[00:05:51] And terms of stuff now like we're going to talk about show again a bunch I these series

[00:05:56] of podcast because it's phenomenal you know when people are it's coming out and people

[00:06:00] are saying one of the few shows that I think conveys scope and compare it a lot to Game

[00:06:05] of Thrones and those comparisons are very apt.

[00:06:08] I think all around it's a technical marvel from like the production design the costuming

[00:06:13] the visual effects work just seeing an actor like Harunuki Sonata you know getting a platform

[00:06:19] to be a leading man he's great and and Mad is probably already exhausted for me just impersonating

[00:06:25] cars Cosmo Jarvis's voice on the show because you could listen to him talk for hours.

[00:06:31] It's amazing.

[00:06:32] It's one of the best things on TV this year.

[00:06:34] Another thing I watched I came out a couple months ago this year was Lou Wong's ex-pats

[00:06:39] on Amazon Prime.

[00:06:43] Beautiful mini series Nicole Kidman's amazing everyone in that show is really I think

[00:06:47] the writing is exemplary in terms of other shows watching right now Abidel Mentry I keep

[00:06:54] up with personally might be a hot take so far the weakest I would say of the three seasons

[00:07:01] I enjoy it like it's a delightful watch it's breezy I think the quality I don't know if

[00:07:07] it's you know this is one of the first shows to immediately resume post strike and to get

[00:07:11] into a certain time frame for that television slot for the end of year.

[00:07:17] The quality is just a little bit a certain story lines I'm wondering why we're going with

[00:07:21] it especially the whole Janine and Mike government compared to her being a teacher kind

[00:07:26] of keeps her at arms length at times for the rest of the ensemble.

[00:07:29] But other than that it's good it's still quality television I think that's probably more

[00:07:34] so what I've been watching recently there's just a bunch of Tokyo vice I've seen a few

[00:07:40] ups as in the new season from what I've heard it's fantastic improvement upon the first

[00:07:45] which I enjoyed but yeah I think that I watched a bunch if I just kept going on about

[00:07:50] what I've seen it we would be going on for a bit so I'll I'll end it there.

[00:07:55] To all of our listeners of the next best picture podcast we know you love movies we do

[00:09:07] 24 well my list is considerably a lot shorter I probably should have spent a little bit more

[00:09:14] time post Oscars through the month of March watching more shows but it just hasn't worked

[00:09:20] out that way I thought I was going to have the time but I'm starting to get the time

[00:09:24] a little bit more now or maybe it was because I knew that this time was coming and I was

[00:09:30] like okay I need to scramble scramble and catch up on some things but this is what I've

[00:09:36] obviously the bear I love it yep it's amazing season two I thought was just as good as the

[00:09:43] first season maybe even better so that's top of the list beyond that yeah I am so sorry like I

[00:09:55] like trust me I have a lot of catching up to do but I did watch the curse as Gio mentioned

[00:10:00] earlier I'm also in the middle of watching show gun I haven't finished it both technically

[00:10:07] it's also not finished but I'm not caught up yet I'm still a few episodes behind compared to

[00:10:12] everybody else but I'm getting there and beyond that wow this is embarrassing oh you know I did

[00:10:21] watch the final season of the crown yeah I couldn't finish it I don't know if you watched the whole

[00:10:27] season throughout I probably stopped halfway through I got through it and I have to admit

[00:10:34] I really didn't enjoy it that much to be honest with you but hey I got through it it is what it is

[00:10:39] yeah Loki season two I watched that because I did like the first season so I figured why not

[00:10:47] let's go back to this and yeah the one show that I was hoping to start by the time we got here

[00:10:54] but I haven't yet is the three-body problem but I think I need to work my way up to that because I'm

[00:11:00] still traumatized by David and Dan did to Game of Thrones and to my life the fact that I can't

[00:11:08] talk to anybody about that show ever since it ended hurts me still to this day it's okay it's okay

[00:11:15] back no it's never gonna be okay truly you have house in the dragon yes yes I do have house in a dragon

[00:11:22] coming back sometime this summer I believe in June if I remember correctly so I'm looking forward

[00:11:26] to that and there's everything too that have not premiered yet that I'm looking forward to I'm looking

[00:11:31] forward to checking out Ripley with Andrew Scott which is going to be coming to Netflix shop

[00:11:36] by Robert Ellswitt and black and white oh no like no like it's it's gorgeous like the trailer for

[00:11:43] alone I'm in and then you have Andrew Scott you know just continuing off like an amazing performance

[00:11:49] of all of us strangers and and then now he's Ripley I was like yeah okay let's do it I just

[00:11:54] want to see him just chill around in Italy and shot by Robert Ellswitt so I'm very excited for

[00:11:59] this many series but one thing that this season is showing us because of the strikes

[00:12:05] is that a lot of shows that were hoping to return are not going to be able to return for

[00:12:10] this eligibility window and thus we have a lot of unlikely contenders this season a lot of

[00:12:18] heavy hitters are missing out this year so now maybe this is the time for certain shows that

[00:12:23] didn't get their time in the spotlight so much to shine something like the gilded age or the morning

[00:12:31] show or maybe this is the year where hacks now takes I I mean listen the bear is going to be

[00:12:37] hard to to throne but like hacks I think is going to be up there against it possibly for outstanding

[00:12:43] comedy series and then there's a couple of other ones to hear reservation dogs is going to be

[00:12:50] in contention again what we do in the shadows is going to be in contention again so

[00:12:56] there's a lot of elements have played here and that is probably the most exciting part I think is

[00:13:00] that there are shows that usually are kind of sitting off to decide lines because there are

[00:13:05] larger shows that are hogging up the spotlight and now something like say slow horses which is in

[00:13:12] its what fourth season third season descended it's going to do season four is the next one so

[00:13:19] so the third season is the one that's up for the consideration yeah yeah this is the time for

[00:13:24] that show to be properly recognized now by the television academy so I think that's like probably

[00:13:29] the most exciting piece of the season the problem is that a lot of these shows because they weren't

[00:13:35] the big heavy hitters have not been widely seen by even yours truly so now I have to catch up on

[00:13:42] seasons were for material just to be able to speak to somebody shows that are in contention this year

[00:13:49] well Matt if it makes you feel better you will probably end up putting more work than television

[00:13:54] academy voters this year which has me very terrified especially in certain races where I'm like

[00:14:00] are we really going to doff all to this because that's just you know what you know and I think

[00:14:05] they have shown that that's what they will do in the situation this year is going to be really bad

[00:14:10] like last year you know people were like wow okay three shows one last year was convenient where

[00:14:14] all three shows that predominantly dominated in drama comedy and limited series were all fantastic

[00:14:21] like they were all great this year it's not looking great for like some of them and I'm actually

[00:14:26] concerned it's we might get like a Game of Thrones final season type winner and certain

[00:14:31] category especially drama I think that's the big fear for me is drama so the crown you're thinking

[00:14:37] unfortunately yes I think that yeah you know they might default to it I don't think it's going

[00:14:43] to be a sweep in every major category like you know it did for the final Coleman season I just

[00:14:49] think it's a go to de facto beloved show that I know these people watch in the television academy

[00:14:55] I think you know it's possibly gonna win drama series is I think supporting actors is happening

[00:15:02] I think you know we look at Elizabeth DeBecky who's practically I don't know I can't say she

[00:15:07] swept she no no you can't you can't say she swept she won the Golden Globe yeah C.A. and Saga yeah so it's

[00:15:16] most likely that she's winning which you know what out of my complaints out of the final season

[00:15:20] which I did not really like or even here to finish sadly I thought DeBecky was the highlight

[00:15:25] of that whole final arc with the the new chapter of new actors in this series so I want to be

[00:15:31] too upset I'm happy if you know what let's give all the awards so Elizabeth DeBecky but I can see

[00:15:38] them just defaulting to it hey everyone started the rep at this is a preview of our full episode
