Stories of Inspiration - Beyond the Stars - The Journey of Kalpana Chawla

[00:00:00] Hello little ones, welcome to another inspiring episode on the series of Gizmo Grandma and Viscuit J.

[00:00:08] Today we are soaring into the stratosphere to share the story, Beyond the Stars The Journey of Kalpana Chawla, a remarkable woman whose dreams took her beyond the stars.

[00:00:22] That's so cool to know Grandma and very inspiring indeed.

[00:00:26] Yes, J. Kalpana Chawla was the first woman of Indian origin in space.

[00:00:38] Let's dive into her life and find out how she reached the stars.

[00:00:44] Kalpana was born in Cardinal, Haryana, India in 1962.

[00:00:49] From a very young age, Kalpana was fascinated by planes and the war sky.

[00:00:53] She would often go to local flying clubs with her father and watch planes take off in land, dreaming of one day soaring among the clouds herself.

[00:01:04] That sounds amazing! She must have been pretty determined to turn those dreams into reality.

[00:01:12] Absolutely, J. Kalpana's love for flight propelled her academic pursuits.

[00:01:18] She initially attended Tagore Bal Niketan School and later pursued a degree in aeronautical engineering from Punjab Engineering College.

[00:01:28] But her aspirations didn't stop there.

[00:01:31] She wanted to reach further into the aerospace field, which led her to move to the United States.

[00:01:38] That's a big move! That is very far! Going all the way from Cardinal to America? Very far?

[00:01:46] Indeed it was!

[00:01:48] In the US, she pursued further studies at the University of Texas at Arlington, earning a master's degree in aerospace engineering.

[00:01:58] Her thirst for knowledge didn't end there.

[00:02:02] She continued her studies, achieving a second master's and a PhD in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder.

[00:02:11] That led her to her path to NASA and astronaut career.

[00:02:15] It's so inspiring, Grandma! Can you tell me more about this story about Kalpana Jaula?

[00:02:23] Of course, J. With her solid education and burning passion, Kalpana was ready to reach for the stars.

[00:02:30] Quite literally!

[00:02:33] She started working at NASA, AIMS Research Centre, where she was involved in research on powered lift computational fluid dynamics.

[00:02:43] And then she became a famous astronaut, right, Grandma?

[00:02:49] Yes, J. In 1994, Kalpana was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA.

[00:02:56] Isn't it awesome?

[00:02:57] A dream come true!

[00:03:01] After years of rigorous training, she flew on the space shuttle Columbia in 1997 as a mission specialist and primary robotic arm operator.

[00:03:13] Wow! She actually went to space? What was her mission about, Grandma?

[00:03:17] Her first mission, STS-87, was dedicated to studying the outer atmosphere of the Sun and collecting data to understand the outer atmospheric layers of stars.

[00:03:30] The mission was a significant success and Kalpana played a crucial role in its achievements.

[00:03:37] But her story doesn't end there, does it?

[00:03:40] Sadly, it doesn't.

[00:03:44] Kalpana's second space flight on the space shuttle Columbia in 2003 ended in tragedy when the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry into Earth's atmosphere.

[00:03:58] But her legacy lives on.

[00:04:00] Kalpana Chawla is remembered not just for her contributions to space exploration, but also as a symbol of courage and inspiration.

[00:04:09] She really showed that no dream is too distant, no star too far to reach, didn't she?

[00:04:16] She certainly did, Jai.

[00:04:19] Kalpana Chawla's life teaches us that with perseverance and dedication, you can achieve the extraordinary.

[00:04:25] She broke barriers and reached new heights, showing young girls everywhere that the sky is not the limit.

[00:04:34] It's just the beginning.

[00:04:38] Thank you, Grandma, for sharing Kalpana Chawla's amazing journey with us.

[00:04:43] It makes me want to reach for my dreams, no matter how big they are.

[00:04:48] Totally on it, Jai. That's the spirit.

[00:04:51] Before we sign off, let's reflect on what we have learned today from Kalpana Chawla's extraordinary journey.

[00:05:01] From a small town in India to the vast expanses of space, Kalpana's story is one of immense courage, relentless pursuit and boundless curiosity.

[00:05:11] Kalpana wasn't just a brilliant astronaut.

[00:05:13] She was a pioneer who dared to dream big and chase those dreams with all her heart.

[00:05:21] Kalpana Chawla's story is a powerful reminder that the sky is not the limit.

[00:05:25] It's merely a lunch ride for our dreams.

[00:05:29] She lived her life exploring the frontiers of space and in doing so, taught us to keep reaching beyond the horizons.

[00:05:38] And thank you, our dear listeners, for joining us today.

[00:05:41] Remember, like Kalpana Chawla, you too can chart your path among the stars.
