[00:00:07] Functional and Still Feel Emotionally Empty. Think about that for a moment. You wake up, you get ready for work, you attend meetings, you solve problems, you finish your task and you come home tired and then the weekend arrives.

[00:00:27] You sleep a little longer, you catch up on the pending work, you manage household tasks, you prepare for Monday and then Monday again arrives. Your life works, your career may be doing well, your family may be doing well and your finances may be stable.

[00:00:52] If something feels missing and you do not feel deeply unhappy, you simply have very little to look forward to. This is what I call a Joy Deficiency. I am Coach Sonal Chauhan and this podcast is for professionals who want success without losing their sense of joy. Today I want you to pause and notice something very simple.

[00:01:19] When was the last time you look forward to something that had nothing to do with work? Not a promotion, not a vacation you need to plan for months, not completing another task, something very small. Something that makes you smile before it happens.

[00:01:42] It may be painting, may be meeting a close friend, may be listening to music, taking a quiet walk or cooking something you enjoy. It may be sitting with a cup of tea without checking your phone. Think about your answer and notice what comes up. Why does joy disappear?

[00:02:09] Many successful professionals slowly train themselves to value usefulness over enjoyment. Every activity needs a purpose. Exercise must improve fitness, reading must improve knowledge, networking must help your career and hobby must become a side business. Even rest starts feeling like a productivity tool.

[00:02:37] So we stop doing things simply because they make us happy. And this happens often in the mid-career. Your responsibilities grow. Your calendar fills up. Your attention gets divided between work, family, health, money and future plans. Play starts feeling childish and the hobbies start feeling unnecessary.

[00:03:05] Creativity gets pushed to the bottom of the list and slowly life becomes a series of things you need to handle. You are functioning but you are not necessarily feeling fulfilled. Let us try something together. Take a piece of paper and draw a small circle in the center. Inside that circle, write one activity you generally enjoy.

[00:03:34] Do not choose something impressive. Choose something simple. Something you would do even if nobody saw it. Now look at that word and ask yourself. When did I last do this? And if the answer is difficult to remember, that tells you something. Your joy did not disappear.

[00:04:03] You stopped giving it space. Take a slow breath and let that thought sit for a moment. Three parts of everyday's joy which I want you to give you through the simple framework. Think about anticipation, experience and expression. Anticipation means having something small to look forward to.

[00:04:33] It could be your Saturday painting time. Or the coffee with a friend. Or simply an evening walk. Your brain does not need a huge event to experience anticipation. A small pleasant activity can create a positive emotional expectation. And then comes experience. You actually do the activity and you give it your full attention.

[00:05:03] You do not turn it into another task. You just simply experience it. And then comes expression. You allow yourself to create, laugh, talk, paint, write, sing or cook or simply play. You give your inner world somewhere to go. And this is where creativity becomes meaningful.

[00:05:34] Creativity is not just about producing beautiful artwork. It gives you permission to experience something without measuring your performance. And that matters for high performing professionals. You spend much of your day being evaluated. Your work has deadlines.

[00:06:02] Your projects have target. Your performance has metrics. Your creative time can be different. You can simply be present. Your work has met. Your work has done. A small story from my own journey. I want to share. For a long time, painting was something I had pushed aside. Life became very busy. Work had its demands and the responsibilities kept growing.

[00:06:33] And then I returned to painting. I noticed something very interesting. I did not paint only to create a finished artwork. I painted to experience myself differently. My mind became quieter. I became more present and happy.

[00:06:57] And I started noticing colors, shapes, emotions and the small details. And that experience changed how I looked at creativity. I realized that adults do not always need another productivity tool. Sometimes we need a permission to enjoy something again. This is one reason I now bring creative practices into stress recovery work.

[00:07:26] Your joy does not need to be big. You do not need to completely change your lifestyle. What you need is just 10 minutes. 10 minutes of something that feels good. 10 minutes of painting. 10 minutes of music. 10 minutes with someone you love. 10 minutes in your garden. Or 10 minutes writing without goals.

[00:07:54] 10 minutes doing something simply because you enjoy it. And then notice how your mind feels before and after. Do not judge that experience just to observe it. That is the beginning of self-awareness. Your goal is not to create a perfect life. Your goal is to create small moments that make life feel worth experiencing.

[00:08:24] A successful career can give you stability. Money can give you comfort and the recognition can give you confidence. But joy needs attention too. And joy often begins with something very small. Something you can look forward to. Before we finish, think about tomorrow.

[00:08:48] What is the one small thing you can give yourself tomorrow that has no productivity goal? Choose one and put that into your calendar. Protect those 10 minutes and treat it as a part of your life. Not as something you earn after finishing everything else. Your life does not need to look broken for you to make space for more joy.

[00:09:18] Sometimes you simply need to notice what has been missing. If this episode made you reflect on your own emotional well-being, I invite you to explore my Creative Reset Masterclass. Where we go deeper into creative practices that can help you to pause, reconnect with yourself and create more emotional balance.

[00:09:45] You can register for it by clicking the link below in the description box. If you would like to learn from my mentor Siddharth Rajshikhar, you can check out his webinar here. Thank you so much for spending these minutes with me. Before you move to your next task, pause for a moment and ask yourself one simple question. What is something I can look forward to this week?
