[00:00:09] Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. I'm your host, Swati Ajed, and these are the major news stories of Thursday, January 23, 2025. US President Donald Trump has re-designated Yemen's Houthi movement, formerly known as Ansarallah, as a foreign terrorist organization, the White House announced. This decision will enforce strict economic penalties on the Iran-aligned group.

[00:00:34] It comes in response to their attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and assaults on the US warships safeguarding the critical maritime checkpoint. The Houthis, who control a significant portion of Yemen, have launched over 100 attacks on ships in the Red Sea since November 2023. They claim these actions are in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. A new wildfire erupted north of Los Angeles on Wednesday, quickly spreading across more than 9,400 acres.

[00:01:04] Fueled by strong winds and dry brush, the fire prompted mandatory evacuation orders for over 31,000 people. Named the Hughes Fire, the blaze is located about 80 kilometers north of Los Angeles. It sent massive flames and thick plumes of smoke over the hilly terrain, adding pressure to firefighters who had just managed to bring two major fires in the metropolitan area, largely under control. Southern California has gone without significant rain for nine months, contributing to hazardous conditions.

[00:01:33] But some rains was forecast from Saturday through Monday, possibly giving firefighters much needed relief. Consumer Affairs Minister Prashal Joshi announced on Thursday that the Consumer Protection Authority has taken action against cap aggregators. Notices have been issued to Ola and Uber for allegedly charging different prices for identical rights. The price difference is said to be based on the user's mobile operating system, Android or iOS.

[00:01:59] Last month, Joshi had emphasized zero tolerance for consumer exploitation and asked CCPA to conduct a thorough inquiry into these allegations. He had described this practice as the prima facie unfair trade practice and a blatant disregard for consumers' right to transparency. A Hyderabad man allegedly killed his wife and tried to cover up the crime in a gruesome manner. Guru Murthy, a former soldier working as a security guard with a defense research and development organization,

[00:02:29] reportedly chopped up the body and boiled the parts in a pressure cooker. He allegedly confessed to the police, but his shocking story has yet to be corroborated. Having been taken into custody, the husband alleged that after boiling the body parts, he disposed of them in a leak. The deceased had been reported missing nearly a week ago and a complaint with the police was lodged by her parents. Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman engaged in a public feud over the Stargate AI project backed by President Donald Trump.

[00:02:58] Trump recently praised a joint venture investing up to $500 billion through a new partnership with OpenAI, Oracle and SoftBank. The Stargate entity is already working on building data centers and power generation for AI development. However, Musk, a close Trump advisor, questioned the value of the investment. He claimed that SoftBank has less than $10 billion secured, which he says he knows from reliable sources.

[00:03:24] Altman fired back saying Musk was wrong and invited him to visit the construction site in Texas. That brings us to the end of this episode.
