[00:00:09] Hello, this is your Daily Dose of News from Onmanorama. I'm your host Kannan and these are the major news stories of Sunday, June 29, 2025. A tragic stampede near the Sri Gudita temple in Odisha's Puri district has left 3 people dead, including 2 women, and injured around 50 others.
[00:00:32] The incident happened around 4 am on Sunday during the Ram Yatra festivities as large crowds gathered to witness the rituals. The chaos began when two trucks carrying ritual materials entered the packed area near the temple. Six of the injured remained in critical condition. Eyewitnesses have alleged a lack of police presence and poor emergency response.
[00:00:57] Odisha Chief Minister Mohen Charan Majhi apologized on behalf of the government, calling the incident unpardonable and promising a probe into the security lapses. Israel has ordered fresh evacuations in northern Gaza ahead of intensified military operations against Hamas. The move comes as US President Donald Trump urged both sides to make the deal and end the war.
[00:01:27] Heavy bombardments were reported in Jabalia and Gaza City, with at least 11 people killed, including 5 in a strike on a tent camp near Khan Yunus. Meanwhile, a renewed ceasefire push by Egypt, Qatar and US is underway, though key differences remain between Hamas and Israel.
[00:01:51] The US Senate has narrowly advanced President Donald Trump's tax cut and spending bill in a tight 5149 vote. The bill, which Trump calls the Great Big Beautiful Plan, boosts military and border funding, raises the debt ceiling and extends tax cuts. Democrats slammed the bill for favouring the wealthy and demanded it be read aloud before the debate, while some Republicans opposed cuts to Medicaid and raising debt.
[00:02:22] Critics, including Elon Musk, warned it could harm jobs and the economy. If passed by the Senate, the bill heads back to the House for a final approval before becoming law. 162 students were rescued from a flooded private residential school in Jharkhand's East Singbhoom after heavy rain submerged the campus on Saturday night.
[00:02:47] Trapped overnight on the rooftop, the students were safely evacuated by police and villagers using boats early on Sunday. The school has been shut and officials have issued alerts for rising water levels in nearby rivers. An orange alert is now in place across several districts in the state with more rain expected.
[00:03:11] Chief Minister Hemant Surin has urged all agencies to remain on high alert and assist residents as needed. India has strongly rejected Pakistan's claims, blaming it for a deadly suicide attack in North Virasidistan that killed 13 security personnel. A vehicle packed with explosives hit a convoy in Mir Ali, with civilians also wounded in the blast.
[00:03:39] The Usud Al-Harb group, linked to Hafiz Gul Bahadur, claimed responsibility for the attack. India called Pakistan's accusations contemptible as tensions rise over one of the deadliest recent attacks in the region. That brings us to the end of this episode.
