Hadi Matar, the man who attacked novelist Salman Rushdie on stage in New York in 2022, was found guilty of attempted murder and assault.

[00:00:32] Matar rushed to the stage at the Chattacqua institution as Rushdie was about to speak, stabbing him multiple times in the head, neck and torso. Rushdie lost vision in his right eye and suffered severe injuries, requiring surgery and months of recovery. Matar was also found guilty of assaulting Henry Rees, a co-founder of the City of Asylum, which is a non-profit organization.

[00:01:00] Matar faces up to 25 years in prison and will be sentenced on April 23. The founder of KIIT, Achyuta Samanta, along with other top officials appeared before a government committee to address the alleged suicide of a Nepalese student and the mistreatment of other students from the country.

[00:01:23] The incident, which involved the suicide of a 20-year-old engineering student and the assault and eviction of Nepalese students, led to protests and calls for a judicial inquiry from opposition members in the Odisha Assembly. Two Israeli hostages were released in Rafah, southern Gaza, and have crossed into Israeli territory, the military announced.

[00:01:51] They were accompanied by Israeli Defense Forces IDF and security agency personnel during their return. They are among the last live captives eligible for release under the first phase of a fragile truce that is also expected to see Palestinian prisoners released.

[00:02:11] U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin must work together to end the war, marking a shift from his previous criticisms of Zelensky. Trump suggested that Ukraine should sign a deal granting the U.S. preferential access to its mineral resources in exchange for financial aid.

[00:02:35] He also claimed that Ukraine lacked bargaining power in negotiations, unlike Russia. The Allahabad High Court's functioning was disrupted as lawyers protested over shortage of judges and the proposed Advocates Amendment Bill.

[00:02:53] The High Court Bar Association, HCBA, called for a work boycott, highlighting the court's current strength of only 55 judges, far below the sanctioned 160, leading to an increasing backlog of cases.
