[00:00:55] Nayib Singh Saini took oath as a Chief Minister of Haryana for the second time. The ceremony was attended by several NDA leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
[00:01:05] 18 more people lost their lives after consuming illicit liquor in Bihar Siwan and southern districts, taking the toll in the huge tragedy to 24.
[00:01:14] The commander of Iran's elite revolutionary guards warned Israel against attacking the Islamic Republic in retaliation for the missile barrage as the Israeli military stepped up its offensive in Lebanon against Tehran-backed Hezbollah.
[00:01:25] Let's get into the details.
[00:01:28] Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday, India made a horrific mistake by thinking it could interfere as aggressively as it allegedly did in Canada's sovereignty.
[00:01:37] Trudeau made the remark two days after Canada kicked out six Indian diplomats linking them to the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada and alleging a broader effort to target Indian dissidents in the country.
[00:01:47] The Canadian leaders' commons were the strongest he has made in a year-long dispute that plunged bilateral relations to a new low.
[00:01:55] In response, India's foreign ministry issued a two-line statement saying Trudeau's deposition confirmed New Delhi Stand that Canada had provided no evidence to support its allegations against Indian diplomats.
[00:02:05] The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone, the foreign ministry's statement said.
[00:02:14] The Indian government denied the allegations of interference and expelled six Canadian diplomats in a tit-for-tat move.
[00:02:21] Dissenting from the majority judgment, Supreme Court Justice J.B. Paradiwala on Thursday held that Section 6A of the Citizenship Act of 1955,
[00:02:29] which grants Indian citizenship to immigrants who enter Assam between January 1, 1966 and March 25, 1971, was arbitrary and constitutionally invalid.
[00:02:40] In a dissenting opinion, Justice Paradiwala said the open-ended nature of Section 6A had become more prone to abuse due to the advent of forged documents.
[00:02:47] Justice Paradiwala said Section 6A promotes further immigration into Assam without any end date of application and immigrants come hoping with forged documents
[00:02:55] to set up the defence of belonging to pre-1966 or the 1966-71 stream upon identification as a foreigner and reference to the tribunal.
[00:03:04] The judge said, while the object that was sought to be achieved with the enactment of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act remained a distant dream,
[00:03:11] its misuse had only continued to increase with the passage of time.
[00:03:15] Section 6A was inserted into the Citizenship Act as a special provision to deal with the citizenship of people covered under the Assam Accord.
[00:03:21] The provision was incorporated in 1985 following the signing of the Assam Accord between the then Rajiv Gandhi government at the Centre and the All-Assam Students Union.
[00:03:30] It says those who came to Assam on or after January 1, 1966 but before March 25, 1971 from specified territories including Bangladesh,
[00:03:39] in accordance with the Citizenship Act amended in 1985 and are residents of the Northeastern state since then,
[00:03:45] must register themselves under Section 18 of the Act for acquiring Indian citizenship.
[00:03:50] As a result, the provision fixes March 25, 1971 as a cut-off date for granting citizenship to migrants,
[00:03:56] particularly the ones from Bangladesh residing in Assam.
[00:04:00] Naib Singh Saini on Thursday took oath as the Chief Minister of Haryana at a ceremony in Panchkula attended by several NDA leaders,
[00:04:07] including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and thousands of people from across the state.
[00:04:11] Haryana Governor Bandarudhattatreya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Saini,
[00:04:15] who became the Chief Minister for the second time at Dasara Ground.
[00:04:19] A total of 13 MLAs also took oath as ministers.
[00:04:23] After the ceremony, Saini said equality, good governance and the poorest welfare would be at the top of his government's agenda.
[00:04:29] Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Saini and his ministerial colleagues and said this team was a wonderful mix of good governance and experience.
[00:04:37] 18 more people lost their lives after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in dry Bihar's Siwan and Saran districts,
[00:04:44] taking the toll in the tragedy to 24, officials said on Thursday.
[00:04:47] Chief Minister Nitish Kumar instructed authorities concerned to take stringent action against those involved in the illegal trade and reminded people of ill effects of consuming spurious liquor.
[00:04:56] The suspected huge tragedy triggered a political blame game with the opposition parties questioning the efficacy of the ban on sale and consumption of liquor imposed by the Nitish Kumar government more than eight years ago.
[00:05:07] According to local police officers, more than 25 people from both districts are battling for their lives in various hospitals in Sivan, Saran and Patna districts.
[00:05:16] The government recently admitted that more than 150 people have died due to consumption of illicit liquor after prohibition was imposed on the state in 2016.
[00:05:25] The commander of Iran's elite revolutionary guards warned Israel on Thursday against attacking the Islamic Republic in retaliation for the missile barrage as the Israeli military stepped up its offensive in Lebanon against Tehran-backed Hezbollah.
[00:05:36] Fears of a wider Middle East conflict have grown as Israel plans to respond to the October 1st missile attack carried out by Iran after Israeli airstrikes on Iranian allied militants.
[00:05:45] The US defense secretary spoke to the Israeli defense minister on Wednesday about Israel's operations in Lebanon and Gaza aiming to avert a regional war.
[00:05:53] Meanwhile, Iran's foreign minister met with the Egyptian president in Cairo, with the latter reiterating Egypt's call to avoid an expansion of the conflict, the Egyptian presidency said.
[00:06:02] However, Israel shows no signs of easing its military campaigns against Hezbollah in Lebanon after assassinating several of its leaders and Hamas in Gaza and it has vowed to punish Iran for its October 1st attack.
[00:06:13] On Thursday, at least 19 Palestinians, including children, were killed after an Israeli strike hit a school in Jabaliyah in the northern Gaza Strip that is sheltering displaced people, a Gaza health ministry official said.
[00:06:24] Dozens were also injured in the strike, said the official, adding there was no water to extinguish the fire.
[00:06:30] Qatar, which has mediated in numerous failed ceasefire talks, said there had been no engagement with any parties for the last three to four weeks on the Gaza war.
