Excise case: Delhi Court extends judicial custody of Arvind Kejriwal till May 7 | Top News of Apr 23, 2024

[00:00:33] Expanding the scope of its hearing in the Patanjali-Ayrvath case, the Supreme Court took a stern view

[00:00:38] of misleading advertisements by fast-moving consumer goods firms and asked the centre

[00:00:43] to inform it about the steps they have taken to curb the practice which takes the public

[00:00:47] for a ride and adversely affects their health.

[00:00:53] Amit Dharo over his redistribution of wealth remarks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi again

[00:00:57] charged that the Congress was hatching a deep controversy to snatch people's wealth and

[00:01:02] distribute it among select people.

[00:01:07] Israel bombarded northern Gaza overnight in some of the heaviest shelling in weeks causing

[00:01:12] panic amongst residents and flattening neighbourhoods in an area from which the Israeli army

[00:01:16] had previously withdrawn its troops.

[00:01:21] Kerala Police on Tuesday filed a charge sheet in the Kalamishiri Blast case naming Dominic

[00:01:25] Martin as the loan accused.

[00:01:32] A Delhi court on Tuesday extended the judicial custody of Chief Minister Advin Kejriwal and

[00:01:37] BRS leader Kavita in a money laundering case related to the alleged excess policy

[00:01:41] scam till May 7th.

[00:01:43] Earlier, Kejriwal was administered a low dose of insulin after his blood sugar

[00:01:47] level spiked, said officials of Teher Jail.

[00:01:50] The Delhi Chief Minister was arrested on March 21st by the enforcement directorate in connection

[00:01:55] with the money laundering case linked to the Delhi government's now-scrapped excess policy.

[00:02:00] He is lodged in Teher Jail since April 1st.

[00:02:02] Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court has listed for hearing on May 15th Kejriwal's petition

[00:02:07] challenging the summonses issued to him by the ED.

[00:02:13] Expanding the scope of its hearing in the Padangalei-Airwait case, the Supreme

[00:02:17] Court on Tuesday took a stern view of misleading advertisements by fast-moving consumer goods

[00:02:21] firms and asked three union ministries to inform it about the steps they have taken to

[00:02:25] curb the practice which takes public for a ride and adversely affects their health.

[00:02:30] The court passed the order after Yoga Guru Ramdev and his aide Bal Krishna of Padangalei

[00:02:35] -Airwait Ltd told a bench of justices Himakuli and Hassanuddin Amanullah that they have

[00:02:40] issued unqualified public apology in as many as 67 newspapers over misleading advertisements

[00:02:46] and are willing to issue additional advertisements expressing their contrition.

[00:02:50] The bench said the public apology published in newspapers were not on record and asked those

[00:02:54] to be filed within two days.

[00:02:57] It posted the matter for April 30th for further consideration.

[00:03:00] While hearing the Padangalei case, the apex court said the implementation of the relevant

[00:03:04] provisions of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Objectionable Advertisements Act, the

[00:03:08] Drugs and Cosmetics Act, and the Consumer Protection Act and the related rules

[00:03:12] also needed a closer examination.

[00:03:14] It said the issue was not limited to Padangalei but extended to all fast-moving consumer goods

[00:03:18] firms which have been issuing misleading advertisements and taking the public for a ride, in particular

[00:03:23] affecting the health of babies, school-going children and senior citizens who have been

[00:03:28] consuming products on the basis of this adverse representation.

[00:03:31] The court asked the union ministries of Consumer Affairs, Information and Broadcasting

[00:03:35] and Information Technology to explain what action they have taken to prevent the

[00:03:39] misuse of consumer laws.

[00:03:41] On April 16th, the apex court had warned Ramdev and Balkrishna against any attempt to degrade

[00:03:46] alopeathy and permitted them to tender a public apology and show contrition within a week

[00:03:50] in the contempt proceedings in the misleading advertisements case against Padangalei

[00:03:54] Ayurved Limited.

[00:03:55] The apex court is hearing a plea filed in 2022 by the IMA alleging a smear campaign

[00:04:00] against the COVID vaccination drive and modern systems of medicine.

[00:04:04] Ramdev and Balkrishna had earlier rendered an unconditional and unqualified apology

[00:04:08] before the top court over advertisements issued by the firm making tall claims about the medicinal

[00:04:13] efficacy of its products.

[00:04:18] Amit Dharu over his redistribution of wealth remarks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi again

[00:04:22] charged that the Congress was hatching a deep conspiracy to snatch people's wealth and

[00:04:26] distribute it among select people.

[00:04:28] He also claimed that Congress tried to extend reservation based on religion and

[00:04:32] give it to Muslims.

[00:04:34] Modi said it was difficult to follow one's faith under the Congress and that even

[00:04:37] listening to Hanuman Chalisa becomes a crime under that party's rule.

[00:04:41] His specific reference to the Lord came on a day when large parts of the country are

[00:04:44] celebrating the Hanuman Jainty.

[00:04:47] Modi had said, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had given a speech in which he had

[00:04:51] said that Muslims have the first right to the resources of the country.

[00:04:55] Congress already clarified that Modi had misinterpreted the former Prime Minister's

[00:04:59] words.

[00:05:00] In a speech given at the 52nd meeting of the National Development Council, Manmohan

[00:05:04] Singh spoke about collective priorities.

[00:05:06] He said sectors like agriculture, irrigation, water resources, health and

[00:05:10] education should be developed along with programs for the upliftment of scheduled

[00:05:14] cars and tribes, other backward classes, minorities and women and children.

[00:05:19] He said innovative plans would have to be devised to ensure that minorities,

[00:05:23] particularly the Muslim community are empowered to share equitably in the

[00:05:26] fruits of development.

[00:05:28] However, Modi claimed he has exposed the Congress's World Bank politics.

[00:05:32] At a rally in Rajasthan on Sunday, Modi had said that if the Congress came

[00:05:35] to power, it would redistribute the wealth of people to infiltrate us and

[00:05:40] those who have more children.

[00:05:41] An excited former PM Manmohan Singh's remark that the minority community had

[00:05:45] the first claim on the country's resources.

[00:05:50] Israel bombarded northern Gaza overnight in some of the heaviest

[00:05:53] shelling in weeks causing panic amongst residents and flattening

[00:05:56] neighbourhoods in an area from which the Israeli army had previously

[00:06:00] withdrawn troops, residents said on Tuesday.

[00:06:02] Army tanks made a new incursion on the northern edge of the

[00:06:05] Gaza Strip, though they did not penetrate far into the city, residents

[00:06:08] and Hamas media said.

[00:06:10] Gunfire reached some schools where displaced residents were sheltering.

[00:06:14] This month Israel also drew down most of its forces in southern Gaza,

[00:06:18] but efforts to reach a ceasefire have failed and Israeli bombardment

[00:06:21] enraged on territory where its troops have withdrawn are making it

[00:06:24] difficult for displaced Gazans to return to abandoned homes.

[00:06:28] Israel also struck Khan Unis in the south on Tuesday,

[00:06:31] a day after tanks raided eastern parts of that city.

[00:06:34] Israel says it is seeking to eradicate Hamas, which controls the enclave,

[00:06:38] following an attack by the militant group on October 7th,

[00:06:41] killing 1,200 and taking 253 hostages by Israeli Tallys.

[00:06:46] Across the Gaza Strip, Israel's military strikes killed 32 Palestinians

[00:06:50] and wounded 59 others in the past 24 hours, Palestinian health authorities said.

[00:06:55] They say more than 34,000 people have been confirmed killed in the

[00:06:57] seven-month war with thousands more bodies as yet unrecovered.

[00:07:04] The police team proving the Kalamishiri blast in which eight people were killed

[00:07:08] has submitted the charge sheet to the trial court.

[00:07:11] The charge sheet has named Dominic Martin, a native of Tamilum in Ernakulam, as the

[00:07:14] lone accused. The charge sheet states that Martin committed the crime to mark

[00:07:18] his protest against the Yehovah's Witnesses set with which he was associated once.

[00:07:23] The charge sheet, which has 3,578 pages,

[00:07:26] was submitted to the Ernakulam Principal Sessions Court by the

[00:07:28] Kochi City Deputy Police Commissioner, who is the investigation officer in the case.

[00:07:33] Martin has been slapped with sections under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and the

[00:07:37] Explosive Substances Act. He has been charged with murder and attempt to murder.

[00:07:41] There are 294 witnesses in the case, as many as 137 material evidence and 236

[00:07:47] documents have been submitted to the court. The police have found that

[00:07:51] Martin wanted to bring Yehovah's Witnesses to the attention of the government

[00:07:54] and the public and get it banned. The blast, which sent shockwaves across the country,

[00:07:58] took place on October 29, 2023 at a convention center during a prayer meeting of the Christian

[00:08:04] sect. Two people were killed on the spot and the others succumbed to burn injuries while

[00:08:08] undergoing treatment. Over 50 individuals were injured in the blast.

[00:08:12] A few hours after the incident, Martin surrendered before the police in Trishun

[00:08:15] and confessed to the crime. Martin committed the crime using an improvised explosive device
