[00:00:09] Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. I am your host, Swati Ajed and these are the major news stories of Friday, Dec 27, 2024.

[00:00:21] The Union cabinet on Friday mourned the demise of ex-Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, describing him as an eminent statesman, a renowned economist and a distinguished leader whose contributions profoundly shaped India's national life.

[00:00:34] As a mark of respect, the government declared seven days of state mourning till January 1st.

[00:00:40] During this period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast across the country and at all Indian missions and high commissions abroad.

[00:00:47] Dr. Singh will be accorded a state funeral and central government officers will observe a half-holiday on Saturday.

[00:00:55] China on Friday defended its plan to build the world's largest dam on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet,

[00:01:00] saying that the project will not affect riparian states and safety issues have been addressed through decades of studies.

[00:01:06] Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning dismissed concerns surrounding the massive project.

[00:01:12] The initiative estimated to cost around $137 billion is being constructed in the ecologically fragile Himalayan region.

[00:01:19] This area lies along a tectonic plate boundary, where earthquakes are a frequent occurrence.

[00:01:26] South Korea's parliament impeached acting president Han Duk-su on Friday, less than two weeks after suspending President Yoon Suk-yeol's powers over his short-lived declaration of martial law, plunging the country deeper into political chaos.

[00:01:41] Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, who assumed the position of acting president, while the cases of Yoon and Han are considered by the Constitutional Court convened the National Security Council,

[00:01:51] spoke with key officials including military leaders and vowed to do everything in his power to stabilize state affairs.

[00:01:58] The unexplained imposition of martial law and the ensuing political upheaval has turned on concerns from allies in the United States and Europe,

[00:02:07] who had seen Yoon as a key partner in efforts to counter China, Russia and North Korea.

[00:02:14] Russia's point man for arms control cautioned Donald Trump's incoming administration on Friday against resuming nuclear testing,

[00:02:21] saying Moscow would keep its own options open amid what he said was Washington's extremely hostile stance.

[00:02:28] The resumption of testing by the world's two biggest nuclear powers would usher in a new and precarious era,

[00:02:34] nearly 80 years since the United States tested the first nuclear bomb in New Mexico in July 1945.

[00:02:40] Russia, the US and China are all undertaking major modernizations of their nuclear arsenals,

[00:02:47] just as the arms control treaties of the Cold War era between the Soviet Union and the United States crumble.

[00:02:54] India were left in the difficult position of 164-45,

[00:02:59] trailing a menacing Australia by 310 runs at Stamps on Day 2 of the fourth test of the Border-Garvizka Trophy in Melbourne on Friday.

[00:03:07] India need another 111 runs to avoid follow-on after Australia posted a first-inning score of 474.

[00:03:16] SSB Jays Fall made a fluent 82-off 108 balls before being run out following a mix-up with Virat Kohli while attempting a quick single.

[00:03:25] From 153-42, Indian batting collapsed and Rishabh Pant and Ravidra Jadeja were at the crease at close of play.

[00:03:32] Meanwhile, Captain Roach Sharma's dismissal form continued as he got out playing a poor shot and KL Rahul got a ripper from Pat Cummins.

[00:03:41] That brings us to the end of this episode.
