Assembly polls: BJP makes big comeback in Haryana, Cong-NC takes J&K | Top News of Oct 8, 2024

[00:00:19] The BJP coasted towards a hat-trick win with its biggest tally in Haryana and the National Conference Congress combined was set to form government in Jammu and Kashmir as voters in both places gave the victors a decisive edge.

[00:00:32] The Israeli military said on Tuesday it killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike on Beirut, a day after the one-year anniversary of the Oct 7 attack was marked by mourning and demonstrations around the globe.

[00:01:18] The BGP coasted towards a hat-trick win with its biggest tally in Haryana and the National Conference Congress combined was set to form government in Jammu and Kashmir as voters in both places gave the victors a decisive edge on Tuesday.

[00:01:33] Bucking exit poll predictions and pollsters in the first elections after the June Luxembourg verdict, the results threw up a mixed back for the BJP sobering lessons for the Congress but clear-cut unambiguous victory for the National Conference

[00:01:45] which led the alliance to power in Jammu and Kashmir.

[00:01:48] If the results in Haryana were a timely boost for the BJP ahead of the elections in Maharashtra later this year, they were a massive downer for the Congress that was hoping to consolidate its gain from the Lok Sabha verdict.

[00:01:58] Interestingly, the numbers in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir almost mirrored each other, both 90-member assemblies.

[00:02:03] The National Conference code began in Jammu and Kashmir, where assembly elections are being held for the first time since 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated and the state bifurcated in Union territories.

[00:02:15] As the party readied for power along with the Congress, his father, National Conference President Farouk Abdullah said categorically, Omar Abdullah will be the Chief Minister.

[00:02:24] Farouk Abdullah also said the verdict was proof that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were against the abrogation of Article 370.

[00:02:31] The Israeli military said Tuesday it had killed a senior Hezbollah commander in a strike on Beirut, a day after the one-year anniversary of the October 7 attack was marked by mourning and demonstrations around the globe.

[00:02:42] The military said the strike killed Suhail Hussaini, who it said was responsible for overseeing logistics, budget and management of the militant group.

[00:02:50] The Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a barrage of rockets into Israel on Monday.

[00:02:55] This attack underscores the militant's resilience despite a devastating Israeli offensive in Gaza.

[00:03:00] According to local medical officials, the offensive has resulted in threats of about 42,000 Palestinians.

[00:03:05] It has also destroyed large areas and displaced about 90% of the population.

[00:03:11] Five Russian climbers who went missing at Mount Dolagiri were found dead at an altitude of over 7,000 metres on Tuesday.

[00:03:18] According to Mingpa Sherpa, vice chairman of Heli Everest, who was involved in the search and rescue operation,

[00:03:24] the five Russian climbers were aiming to submit the world's 7th highest peak on Sunday during Nepal's autumn climbing season.

[00:03:30] All of them were heading towards the summit of the 8,167-mater peak with the help of a single rope when they went missing.

[00:03:37] There was no clarity as yet to how and when the bodies would be brought down from the high altitude area.

[00:04:10] KLA Chief Minister Pindrai Vijayan informed the State Assembly on Tuesday that the central government has not yet provided assistance for those affected by the devastating landslides in Churul Mala and Mundakai,

[00:04:21] in Vanay district which occurred on July 30.

[00:04:24] He emphasised that the state had to sought aid for these individuals.

[00:04:27] Vijayan further mentioned that the government has decided to request the union government to expedite the release of special financial aid as soon as possible.

[00:04:35] In a statement made under Rule 300, the Chief Minister noted that a request has been submitted to the central government for additional assistance to the State Disaster Response Fund.

[00:04:44] The Chief Minister highlighted that the estimated losses across various sectors exceeded Rs 1,200 crore.

[00:04:50] To address this, a memorandum has been prepared in accordance with central guidelines.

[00:04:54] This memorandum has been submitted to request additional assistance based on these estimates.
