Choosing the right Educational System of Syllabus for your child can be confusing to many parents. Often people just go with what is available or familiar rather than looking for what will suit them and their child in the future, leading to unnecessary complications later.
In this podcast I have given you the basic information that you need to know when deciding on which one is right for your child and also for you as a parent. Yes, parents whose jobs involve relocating often and taking your family with you, will need to choose the Board that is widely available and will not disrupt the flow of education of your child.
[00:00:00] Hello and welcome to another episode of Career Talks with Anita Clifford. Today we are going
[00:00:07] to speak about the K-12 educational system around the world. Now K-12 or K-12 it's a term which
[00:00:17] is used to refer to the combination of primary and secondary education so K means kindergarten,
[00:00:24] while 12 means class 12 which are usually the first and the last grades of this school education in
[00:00:32] many countries. Now these are the years which play a very important role in shaping the future of
[00:00:38] every student so educational boards and or educational boards are organizations that provide various
[00:00:46] educational programs. Sometimes a single board may offer more than one program for the same level of
[00:00:53] education so from a pool of several educational boards I have listed down a few well-known and highly
[00:01:02] reputed K-12 boards and they can be basically divided into the Indian Boats and the International Boats.
[00:01:11] So these boats offer different curricula for different levels, they vary from each other in teaching
[00:01:18] methods, area of focus and grading systems. Every education system is unique and it has its own
[00:01:24] approach to teaching so although there are various bases on which these educational boards differ from
[00:01:31] each other the following are the main factors which distinguish one board from the other that is
[00:01:37] the syllabus and the subjects offered, the teaching methods and approach and the assessment and
[00:01:44] grading. Now first let us we will discuss about the Indian K-12 educational boards so in India there
[00:01:53] are several educational boards which offer K-12 education programs, so the most common one is CBSC,
[00:02:03] the Central Board of Secondary Education and it's a renowned education board in India which was
[00:02:09] established in 1962 and comes under the government of India. It gives affiliation to both public
[00:02:17] and private schools and it offers curriculum and conducts the annual examination of classes 10-12.
[00:02:24] So CBSC is also followed in countries like Malaysia, Japan, UAE, Singapore, Russia, Bahrain,
[00:02:32] Kuwait, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Humaan, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, so like this there are many
[00:02:40] countries in which you get to have schools that are offering the CBSC curriculum. Now CBSC is known
[00:02:48] for its major focus on math and science and it is said to be more suitable program for students who
[00:02:54] aspire to study engineering or medicine for their higher education. Also you may consider choosing CBSC
[00:03:04] if the parent plans has a job that they have to keep changing very often, for example those who are
[00:03:13] working in the banking field or in the defense who get transferred very often and after move from
[00:03:18] state to state or even if you have to travel out of the country you may opt to put your child in a school that
[00:03:26] follows this curriculum so that there is that continuity of education and they do not find much
[00:03:35] of a difference in the style of which they are learning. Now the next one is the CISC or the
[00:03:42] Council for the Indian School Certification Exam and it is a national private board which offers
[00:03:48] curricula and conduct examinations for class 10 and the class 10 is called the Indian Certificate of
[00:03:55] Secondary Education or the ICSC and also for class 12 called the Indian School Certificate or ISC.
[00:04:04] So this curriculum is also followed in countries like UAE, Singapore, Indonesia and a few other
[00:04:11] countries as well. We have the state boards now every state in India has its educational board
[00:04:19] both for grade 10 as well as 12 so these boards vary in their approach of to education however
[00:04:27] the subjects are nearly the same as the main regional languages. The state boards of Maharashtra
[00:04:36] West Bengal, Ota Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh they enjoy a comparatively higher reputation as
[00:04:43] compared to the other state boards. Now let's move on to the International K-12 Educational Boats.
[00:04:53] Now on the international level there are several educational boards which have
[00:04:57] garnered a high reputation and recognition. We will just touch upon two of them so
[00:05:04] the Cambridge Assessment International Education or Cambridge International. So Cambridge Assessment
[00:05:11] International is one of the most highly reputed educational boards in the world. So schools in more
[00:05:18] than 160 countries have subscribed to the courses and examinations offered by Cambridge International.
[00:05:27] So Cambridge International offers three major qualifications and also conducts its exams so they are the
[00:05:36] IGCSE, the O levels and the A levels. IGSE stands for the International General Certificate of
[00:05:47] Secondary Education. So this is a certification which is equivalent to the SSC or the 10
[00:05:53] standard certification in India and it is considered to be one of the most rigorous curricula
[00:05:59] in the world and enjoys an unmatched reputation. It is also the most widely subscribed curricula for
[00:06:06] those in the age of 14 to 19 years and is considered as the International variant of the British GCSE
[00:06:14] curriculum. The O levels on the other hand is a curriculum which is also provided by the Cambridge
[00:06:20] International and is considered equivalent to the IGCSE but there are fewer coursework options
[00:06:26] in O levels. In other words it is a version of IGSE which with slight variation in syllabus
[00:06:35] and teaching methods. Another difference between the two curriculum is that while IGSE is more inclined
[00:06:41] towards global subjects, O level curriculum is more inclined towards specific local needs like
[00:06:48] minority languages and reading and writing skills. Now O level is not subscribed as widely
[00:06:55] as IGCSE, as many schools subscribing to O level now have switched to IGSE curriculum.
[00:07:03] Then we will move on to the Cambridge International AS and A levels.
[00:07:09] Now this qualification is provided by Cambridge International for students of the age
[00:07:14] between 16 to 19 years. This curricula are unique and they are based on encouraging and
[00:07:20] imbibing in depth subject knowledge, independent thinking and is constructed around reasoning
[00:07:26] and decision making skills. A 55 subjects are offered under this curriculum which can be altered
[00:07:33] in any combination by the school. The AS level is for class 11 while the A level is for class 12
[00:07:40] and 13 and sometimes students can even complete it in just one year which is a class 12.
[00:07:45] Then we move on to the IB or the International Bacularate. The International Bacularate
[00:07:51] Organization commonly known as IB is another highly reputed educational board which offers a number
[00:07:59] of well-devised and carefully structured educational curricula for various levels.
[00:08:06] It is based in Switzerland when was founded in 1968. So all over the world this curriculum
[00:08:14] is hailed as the best and the most holistic in its approach. The IB program trains students
[00:08:21] and educate them in a global context unlike the other programs. So the program offered by the IB
[00:08:29] PYP that is primary year program then MYP which is middle-years program and the IB DPOD
[00:08:39] IB Diploma program. So these are the different syllabus that you can get either in the Indian
[00:08:47] K12 or the International Quatorve and depending on which suits your needs you can choose to go
[00:08:55] with that for your child.
