[00:00:00] Hello and welcome to another edition of Buy Hold Sells this week in Wall Street History. I'm your host, Todd Schoenberger. Today we look back at October 1929, deep into the archives of Wall Street history,

[00:00:21] few stories stand out as starkly as that of Albert Wiggin, the former head of Chase Bank, who faced disgrace during the Great Depression. His actions, although not illegal at the time, shocked the nation and forever tarnished his reputation. It was the darkest days of the Great Depression.

[00:00:39] The stock market had crashed, taking the livelihoods of countless Americans with it. But amid the chaos and suffering, one man was seemingly untouched by the devastation. Albert Wiggin, the respected president of Chase Bank, had quietly been short selling the very stock of his own bank.

[00:00:57] Short selling is a practice where an investor bets against a stock, profiting from its decline. While not illegal, it was considered unethical for a bank's leader to do so, especially when so many Americans were suffering from the financial crisis.

[00:01:11] Wiggin's trading activities had gone unnoticed until it was revealed that he had profited an astonishing 4 million dollars from the decline of Chase Bank stock, while the bank's shareholders and the American people were reeling from the market crash. The revelations sparked outrage and public outcry.

[00:01:30] The American people demanded accountability and reform. The incident, among others, led to increased regulatory scrutiny and contributed to the creation of the Securities and Exchange Commission to oversee Wall Street activities. In the end, Albert Wiggin was forced to resign from his position as president

[00:01:48] of Chase Bank and his reputation was forever tarnished. History serves as a cautionary tale, a reminder that not all actions that are technically legal are morally acceptable, especially in times of financial crisis. Albert Wiggin's actions during the Great Depression remain a dark chapter in the

[00:02:06] history of Wall Street, a stark reminder that integrity and responsibility are essential virtues for those entrusted with the nation's financial well-being. Thank you for listening to this edition of This Week in Wall Street History.

[00:02:36] The world's best known investor and Wall Street expert Warren Buffett once said, Wall Street is the only place that people ride to in a Rolls Royce to get advice from those who take the subway. Mr. Buffett's quote is remarkably accurate, but how many people would rather receive

[00:02:50] advice from him than someone simply guessing? Welcome to Buy, Hold, Sell, your single source for Wall Street knowledge and profitable guidance.
