वयाच्या 23 व्या नौदलात अधिकारी बनण्याची स्वप्नं घेऊन मुंबईत आलेला मोतीलाल अपघातानेच हिन्दी चित्रपट सृष्टीत आला. बोलके डोळे, भुवयांची तणावलेली धनुष्ये, भव्य कपाळ आणि संपन्न घरात जन्मल्या वावरल्या मुळे त्याचात असलेला दिलखुलासपणा ही त्याची खासियत.
स्वभावता कलंदर असलेला, संस्थानिक आणि श्रीमंत माणसात वावरणारा मात्र निर्मळ अंतकरणात सदैव माणुसकीचा झरा असलेला असा मोतीलाल पडद्यावर आणि पडद्या बाहेर सारखाच वावरायचा. त्याच्या पडद्या वरच्या कित्येक लकबी नंतर देव आनंद ने व दिलीप कुमार ने उचलल्या. दिलीप कुमार तर त्याला गुरुच मानायचा. सच है, शादी, आरमान, परदेसि, लालटेन आणि देवदास सारख्या अनेक चित्रपटातून त्याने मुख्य नट आणि सहायक नट म्हणून प्रसिद्धी मिळवली. 1934 ते 1965 अशी 31 वर्ष त्याने आपली छाप हिन्दी चित्रपट सृष्टी वर टिकवली.

At the age of 23, Motilal arrived in Mumbai city with dreams to be a naval officer but, accidentally became an actor in Hindi film industry.
Sparkling eyes, curved eyebrows, large forehead and the ease in his bold and daring attitude due to his birth and up bringing in a rich family was perfect combination to be an actor. Born rich but a kind soul, he used be same on and off screen. Many of his on screen styles were then picked by Dev Anand and Dilip Kumar. Especially Dilip Kumar used to consider him Guru. Motilal’s roles of main actor or assistant in movies like Sach hai, Shaadi, Arman, Pardesi, Laalten and Devdas brought lots of success to him. 31 years (1934 to 1965) he could successfully retain his image of a hero.
