[00:00:00] आज में साथ हैं एक ऐसे Music Composer, Singer
[00:00:04] whose music we all have loved, enjoyed specially on OTT platforms
[00:00:10] ऐसा कह सकते हैं कि OTT दुन्या के Music scape को वो रूल करते हैं
[00:00:16] Let's see who is with us on this Podcast
[00:00:20] Hey Anand, Hi, Welcome on 9XM Soundcast
[00:00:24] Thank you, Thank you, Hi
[00:00:25] I am so glad that we have you
[00:00:28] We totally missed meeting you during the launch, the release of Showtime
[00:00:34] And I think you have come a long way because we all have enjoyed
[00:00:40] Anand Bhaskar Collective specially on YouTube
[00:00:44] Long before this entire indie music revolution started
[00:00:50] I must say that right from Mirzapur to the 1, 2, 3 CDs
[00:00:55] You have come a long way
[00:00:57] So it's absolutely our pleasure to have you on the Podcast
[00:01:01] Thank you, thank you for recognizing my work
[00:01:04] It's refreshing that people actually are aware of what I have done
[00:01:08] Before actually calling me on Podcasts
[00:01:11] One thing I can say is
[00:01:13] Not one word but there are two words to describe Anand Bhaskar's music
[00:01:20] If you had to
[00:01:21] Colorful surprises
[00:01:24] It's always varied
[00:01:26] Your soundscape, be it in your independent releases
[00:01:31] Way before the release of Showtime
[00:01:33] It's always varied
[00:01:34] It's always varied
[00:01:37] So for me
[00:01:38] I think I am the one who has to be in the
[00:01:55] The right path
[00:01:57] I think I am the one who has to be in the
[00:02:01] Right path
[00:02:03] So for me
[00:02:05] I think I am the one who is getting surprised by these compositions and these beats
[00:02:11] Because
[00:02:15] For me
[00:02:16] I write a vocal melody
[00:02:18] That's my first goal
[00:02:21] First of all I make the tune
[00:02:23] And then the genre in which the tune should go
[00:02:27] It reflects the composition of that tune
[00:02:30] So for me
[00:02:31] When I was working on Nezapur Season 1
[00:02:34] The first brief I got was to write a Sufi song
[00:02:38] And I had never done Sufi in that space ever
[00:02:42] I am somebody who grew up listening to a lot of rock and Indian classical music
[00:02:47] So when I got that reference
[00:02:50] I think it was some Coke Studios song reference I remember
[00:02:53] And the first reaction was I was so scared
[00:02:56] How will I kind of create this
[00:02:58] Because I don't have those influences on me
[00:03:00] So I did a lot of listening
[00:03:02] I listened to a lot of songs in that space
[00:03:05] And then I ended up writing something which the directors and producers liked
[00:03:10] And that song is called Varu
[00:03:12] Which was on Season 1
[00:03:15] Yes beautifully sung by Rumi
[00:03:17] We have had him on the podcast
[00:03:19] Rumi even he sang on Showtime as well
[00:03:22] He is a very dear friend of mine
[00:03:24] I know
[00:03:25] Best vocalist I have worked with
[00:03:27] So when Varu was there
[00:03:29] Then they were like
[00:03:30] Can you make a Hoshpuri song
[00:03:32] So you were like power dot
[00:03:34] I am like they are just throwing me a curve ball
[00:03:38] Like one after the other
[00:03:39] And then they made that and they liked it
[00:03:42] And it's a really funny song
[00:03:44] And then they said
[00:03:46] Can you write a Punjabi wedding song
[00:03:48] And then I wrote it
[00:03:49] So then I went with this
[00:03:51] With that project I realised that
[00:03:53] Okay maybe I can do this
[00:03:55] And then I think the variety really comes from the place
[00:03:58] And the directors that I work with
[00:04:00] Because fortunately the directors
[00:04:03] With me, who I have worked with
[00:04:07] They are also musically inclined
[00:04:09] They are so aware of what they want
[00:04:12] And clear from the get go
[00:04:14] That this space is needed
[00:04:16] Now the directors that I work with
[00:04:18] They are like
[00:04:19] I am like I work with them so much that
[00:04:21] If I voice mail them on WhatsApp
[00:04:23] If I send them the hum
[00:04:25] They immediately know
[00:04:27] What instrumentation will come here
[00:04:29] And what it will sound like as a finished product
[00:04:32] So I think variety really comes from them
[00:04:34] I am a guy who just knows how to write
[00:04:37] The vocal melody and then build the music out of it
[00:04:40] So I think it's the credit goes to them
[00:04:43] For my IT
[00:04:44] Lovely
[00:04:45] You know Anand ji
[00:04:46] Today after so many years
[00:04:48] Of OTT
[00:04:50] Which is now a very normal platform in our life
[00:04:54] It has become a mainstream
[00:04:56] Which can be said that the platform has become OTT
[00:04:59] But when in the beginning
[00:05:01] You know when
[00:05:02] You know music
[00:05:04] In the world of OTT
[00:05:06] Was like a big
[00:05:08] You know jarring idea
[00:05:10] Where it was hardcore content
[00:05:12] Script
[00:05:13] And you know
[00:05:15] In Bollywood music is a very important element
[00:05:18] Nobody expected music to be
[00:05:21] Such an important
[00:05:23] You know element
[00:05:25] In most of our Indian
[00:05:27] You know web series
[00:05:28] So
[00:05:29] That whole graph
[00:05:31] Which you saw
[00:05:33] You know and you were a part of that
[00:05:35] So something above that
[00:05:37] You know how music has
[00:05:39] Completely ruled this OTT
[00:05:41] See we are Indians
[00:05:43] We have a song in our culture
[00:05:46] Means our social fabric
[00:05:48] Is so important
[00:05:50] That we can't really ignore it
[00:05:52] Absolutely
[00:05:53] Even if we want to
[00:05:54] Right
[00:05:55] And in that also I think there are demarcations
[00:05:57] Like for example
[00:05:58] When we are talking about films
[00:06:01] Songs are very very important
[00:06:03] Which is why the songs are given that much
[00:06:05] Impetus and
[00:06:07] So much promotion will be there
[00:06:09] And then there's the score
[00:06:11] But I still think the score is a lot more important than songs
[00:06:14] Because
[00:06:15] If you are watching a movie
[00:06:16] And you are watching the songs
[00:06:17] And you are muting
[00:06:18] Then people will still watch the movie
[00:06:20] But if you have muted the background score
[00:06:23] The story will not come alive at points that it needs to be
[00:06:27] Lovely
[00:06:28] You know
[00:06:29] So I think what happened with OTT
[00:06:31] Was that
[00:06:33] Because Bollywood
[00:06:35] As a film industry
[00:06:37] Along with the fact that
[00:06:39] They want
[00:06:40] They are writing artistic stories
[00:06:41] It's also business
[00:06:43] And when it's business
[00:06:45] There are a lot of decisions that are
[00:06:47] Driven by profits
[00:06:49] Right
[00:06:50] So
[00:06:51] If somebody is doing a good job
[00:06:53] You know
[00:06:54] There are these top composers like
[00:06:56] Amit Siviyan, Prithal, Vaiman sir
[00:06:58] People will go to them because they have proved themselves
[00:07:00] It's sort of hard for new workers
[00:07:02] To come and
[00:07:04] Get projects
[00:07:05] Like for example
[00:07:06] How we got
[00:07:08] You know
[00:07:09] Sort of exploded
[00:07:10] Was because of them
[00:07:12] It's very hard for people to do that now
[00:07:14] Because every film has 5 composers
[00:07:16] It's like a big career song
[00:07:18] Like I say that a lot of times
[00:07:20] You know
[00:07:21] Instead of one composer
[00:07:22] Kind of giving the projects
[00:07:24] Like musical identity
[00:07:25] However
[00:07:26] With OTT
[00:07:27] What happened was that
[00:07:28] It democratized the process
[00:07:30] No
[00:07:31] Like you said
[00:07:32] And
[00:07:33] Because it was a new space
[00:07:35] Newer producers were
[00:07:37] Willing to try
[00:07:38] Newer styles of stories
[00:07:40] Newer styles of filmmaking
[00:07:41] And newer composers
[00:07:42] And newer musicians
[00:07:43] A lot of independent musicians
[00:07:45] Kind of
[00:07:46] Got their foot in the door
[00:07:47] And I was one
[00:07:48] You know
[00:07:49] So
[00:07:50] The growth
[00:07:51] Then
[00:07:52] Initially also
[00:07:53] There was not a lot of focus on
[00:07:55] Making the music
[00:07:56] Sort of
[00:07:57] An important promotion point
[00:08:00] For
[00:08:01] The show
[00:08:02] Or a film
[00:08:03] On OTT
[00:08:04] But say
[00:08:06] Scam ka title track
[00:08:07] By Hanchini
[00:08:08] Bikhiin
[00:08:09] By
[00:08:10] In the title track
[00:08:11] By Jon Stewart
[00:08:12] And
[00:08:13] You know
[00:08:14] Like
[00:08:15] That's when people sat
[00:08:16] And noticed
[00:08:17] That
[00:08:18] Over is also
[00:08:19] Kind of important
[00:08:20] People are listening
[00:08:21] To the score
[00:08:22] And that's when
[00:08:23] Initially
[00:08:24] It says
[00:08:25] That every time a project
[00:08:26] Would come out
[00:08:27] People would only
[00:08:28] Release the songs
[00:08:29] And the score
[00:08:30] Would never get released
[00:08:31] Like how internationally
[00:08:32] Will you see
[00:08:33] In a national film project
[00:08:34] So you have these
[00:08:35] Newer musicians
[00:08:36] Which are a part
[00:08:37] Of the score
[00:08:38] Of the film
[00:08:39] Now because
[00:08:40] OTT
[00:08:41] People like me
[00:08:42] Are able to
[00:08:43] Sort of release
[00:08:44] Even a score
[00:08:45] Piece without
[00:08:46] Any other word
[00:08:47] Like when I was
[00:08:48] Looking at the show
[00:08:49] About the mask
[00:08:50] Eventually
[00:08:51] It became
[00:08:52] A 17 track album
[00:08:54] Jis mein jo
[00:08:55] Poetrys
[00:08:56] Amne uski thi
[00:08:57] Amare jo
[00:08:58] Jis mein jo
[00:08:59] Poetrys
[00:09:00] We sent them
[00:09:01] To music pieces
[00:09:02] We released
[00:09:03] Pieces of
[00:09:04] Music
[00:09:05] That were important
[00:09:06] Themes for each character
[00:09:07] And even the songs
[00:09:08] Which were in the
[00:09:09] Poetrys
[00:09:10] Similarly for
[00:09:11] Showtime as well
[00:09:12] We did the same
[00:09:13] So I think
[00:09:14] The evolution of
[00:09:15] How music
[00:09:16] And not just songs
[00:09:17] But also the score
[00:09:18] You know
[00:09:19] And I hate
[00:09:20] Using the term
[00:09:21] Background music
[00:09:22] Because it's not
[00:09:23] Background music
[00:09:24] It's music
[00:09:25] Ideally the score
[00:09:26] Composers should
[00:09:27] Get the music credit
[00:09:28] And the song
[00:09:29] Composers should
[00:09:30] Get composer of songs
[00:09:31] We had a
[00:09:32] Salim Khan cinema
[00:09:33] On the spot
[00:09:34] Thus twice
[00:09:35] And we had
[00:09:36] We had a
[00:09:37] Very long
[00:09:38] Discussion on this
[00:09:39] And he said
[00:09:40] The same thing
[00:09:41] That you know
[00:09:42] How the score
[00:09:43] People who are
[00:09:44] Composing the score
[00:09:45] They should be
[00:09:46] Given equal
[00:09:47] It's a much harder job
[00:09:48] And it takes
[00:09:49] Way more time
[00:09:50] Than writing a song
[00:09:51] I can write a song
[00:09:52] In under 2 hours
[00:09:53] Give it to a music
[00:09:54] Producer
[00:09:55] Or producer myself
[00:09:56] And within
[00:09:57] A few hours
[00:09:58] I can write a song
[00:09:59] In under 2 hours
[00:10:00] And give it to a music
[00:10:01] Producer
[00:10:02] Or producer myself
[00:10:03] And within
[00:10:04] A few hours
[00:10:05] And within
[00:10:06] A week
[00:10:07] We'll have
[00:10:08] The finished product
[00:10:09] Right
[00:10:10] But to write a score
[00:10:11] For a movie
[00:10:12] It will take me
[00:10:13] At least 6 weeks
[00:10:14] To finish
[00:10:15] It from top to bottom
[00:10:16] Or in that
[00:10:17] If there is
[00:10:18] Edit change
[00:10:19] Then
[00:10:20] There is so much
[00:10:21] Difference
[00:10:22] By cutting back
[00:10:23] The music
[00:10:24] To make sure
[00:10:25] That it flows properly
[00:10:26] But in a score
[00:10:27] Score takes
[00:10:28] Way more time
[00:10:29] Than the song
[00:10:30] And doesn't even get
[00:10:31] A tenth of the credit
[00:10:32] Than the song
[00:10:33] That's like
[00:10:34] Really unfortunate
[00:10:35] But
[00:10:36] I am sure
[00:10:37] You know
[00:10:38] This will
[00:10:39] Change
[00:10:40] We'll talk about
[00:10:41] Showtime
[00:10:42] Before that
[00:10:43] Let's talk about
[00:10:44] You know
[00:10:45] Mirzapur
[00:10:46] You know
[00:10:47] Just
[00:10:48] It has evolved
[00:10:49] It has its own
[00:10:50] Identity
[00:10:51] Of its own
[00:10:52] Like you know
[00:10:53] Whenever we talk
[00:10:54] About Mirzapur
[00:10:55] So
[00:10:56] You know
[00:10:57] Its songs
[00:10:58] How did you
[00:10:59] You already told us
[00:11:00] That it was like
[00:11:01] A big surprise
[00:11:02] For you also
[00:11:03] That it was like
[00:11:04] A challenge
[00:11:05] For you as a musician
[00:11:06] So when it comes to songs
[00:11:07] Like for season 1
[00:11:08] You know
[00:11:09] I was
[00:11:10] I would like
[00:11:11] I mean
[00:11:12] Its gonna look
[00:11:13] It's reflect badly
[00:11:14] But I wasn't prepared
[00:11:15] For the kind of
[00:11:16] Briefs I would get
[00:11:17] What did you get
[00:11:18] I kind of like
[00:11:19] Went in line
[00:11:20] But after season 1
[00:11:21] I realized that
[00:11:22] Okay
[00:11:23] You know
[00:11:24] There are certain sensibilities
[00:11:25] And I worked with Mihir
[00:11:26] For the first time
[00:11:27] In Mirzapur
[00:11:28] Who was my director
[00:11:29] For Mawsut
[00:11:30] As a visual time
[00:11:31] And Mihir is somebody
[00:11:32] Who is
[00:11:33] So involved in music
[00:11:34] He is
[00:11:35] Its almost
[00:11:36] Like now we are telepathic
[00:11:37] Like
[00:11:38] I know what he is thinking
[00:11:39] He knows what I am thinking
[00:11:40] You know
[00:11:41] So working with him
[00:11:42] Has been
[00:11:43] One of the greatest learning experiences
[00:11:44] Of my life
[00:11:45] So after season 1
[00:11:46] When we start
[00:11:47] Aside from season 2
[00:11:48] I kind of already knew that
[00:11:49] Okay this is the world
[00:11:50] I am gonna stick to
[00:11:51] How do I bring my uniqueness to it
[00:11:52] So season 2 me ye hua ki
[00:11:53] Mihir
[00:11:55] Mihir ne kaha ki
[00:11:56] Now this time we have more songs
[00:11:58] We have 7 songs now
[00:11:59] And instead of the 3
[00:12:00] In the first season
[00:12:01] We have more songs
[00:12:02] And I was like
[00:12:03] Okay first season
[00:12:04] Achha ye hi hua tha ki
[00:12:05] First season's songs
[00:12:06] Hadn't released officially
[00:12:07] At that point in time
[00:12:08] And Varun somehow
[00:12:09] Went viral
[00:12:10] Yeah
[00:12:11] So I was like
[00:12:12] I was like
[00:12:13] I was like
[00:12:14] I was like
[00:12:15] I was like
[00:12:16] I was like
[00:12:17] I was like
[00:12:18] I was like
[00:12:19] I was like
[00:12:20] I was like
[00:12:21] I was like
[00:12:22] I was like
[00:12:23] Yeah
[00:12:24] So
[00:12:25] And everybody at Excel
[00:12:26] Also like
[00:12:27] What I did
[00:12:28] So now the pressure was double
[00:12:29] How do I top this
[00:12:31] You know
[00:12:32] My first impression on somebody
[00:12:33] Is good
[00:12:34] You know
[00:12:35] Somebody that Excel
[00:12:36] In fact
[00:12:37] Is good
[00:12:38] Abhi
[00:12:39] How do I
[00:12:40] Make a better impression
[00:12:41] So that was
[00:12:42] I think
[00:12:43] The kind of
[00:12:44] Pressure pointed me
[00:12:45] And when I sat with Mihir
[00:12:47] Then we started discussing these
[00:12:49] Different situations
[00:12:50] And there were more curves
[00:12:52] I had to write a song called
[00:12:54] Titar Vitar
[00:12:55] Which is
[00:12:56] Which is an item song
[00:12:57] And up until that time
[00:12:59] I hadn't
[00:13:00] Really given a thought about
[00:13:02] How item songs would be composed
[00:13:04] And
[00:13:05] And
[00:13:06] So
[00:13:07] When I was composing
[00:13:08] Then I realized
[00:13:09] Oh my god
[00:13:10] This is so hard
[00:13:11] So difficult
[00:13:12] Because when you write an item song
[00:13:14] The biggest risk is
[00:13:16] You will end up
[00:13:17] Sounding like another item song
[00:13:18] Yeah
[00:13:19] Because there is only so much
[00:13:20] You can do really
[00:13:21] Yeah
[00:13:22] So I was so
[00:13:24] It was so difficult for me and I
[00:13:26] Started listening to all the famous item songs
[00:13:28] All of them
[00:13:29] From
[00:13:30] Faray Call
[00:13:31] To
[00:13:32] Deepak mahan
[00:13:33] All of these
[00:13:34] And I am like
[00:13:35] You know there is this one
[00:13:36] Sort of
[00:13:37] Structure they follow
[00:13:38] Where there is a verse
[00:13:39] And then the pre-chorus kind of tips
[00:13:41] And then it leads to a very like
[00:13:43] Sort of
[00:13:44] Big chorus
[00:13:45] You know
[00:13:46] And
[00:13:47] And the chorus needs a catch phrase
[00:13:49] And all
[00:13:50] Me and I
[00:13:51] We were just
[00:13:52] Discussing the situation
[00:13:53] Of Tittar Vittar
[00:13:54] And usme kya tha ki
[00:13:56] A huge fight
[00:13:57] A gang fight
[00:13:58] That happens in the bar
[00:14:00] And I told Gini
[00:14:01] Me and I thought
[00:14:02] Aisa wajata hai
[00:14:03] Ki sab no Tittar Vittar wajata hai
[00:14:05] You know
[00:14:06] And then she was like
[00:14:07] Oh we could use that
[00:14:08] And then she kind of
[00:14:09] Built the lyrics based on that
[00:14:10] And you know
[00:14:11] We
[00:14:12] Like came up with
[00:14:13] Something like that
[00:14:14] Like my team and I
[00:14:15] We were
[00:14:16] Quite happy with the result
[00:14:17] You know
[00:14:18] Like okay
[00:14:19] We thought to it
[00:14:20] You can
[00:14:21] Kind of
[00:14:22] Do this
[00:14:23] Then there was another song
[00:14:24] In Mirza for season 2
[00:14:25] Which was
[00:14:26] Jo Beena character
[00:14:28] Halsika Pundal ka character
[00:14:29] Ondhaka baby shower hai
[00:14:30] Jo Be My Baby Shower
[00:14:32] Hota hai
[00:14:33] Wahan pe local songs
[00:14:34] Jo hota hai
[00:14:35] Ondhaka hoon ko sogar
[00:14:36] So
[00:14:37] Phir me
[00:14:38] Me ne Gini
[00:14:39] Ne bahut research ki
[00:14:40] Wo lyrics
[00:14:41] Ke research na chali gini
[00:14:42] Me musical stats ki
[00:14:43] Research chala gaya
[00:14:44] And she would also
[00:14:45] Keep sending me
[00:14:46] Acha listen to this
[00:14:47] Sogar
[00:14:48] Aise garken
[00:14:49] And we wrote a song
[00:14:50] Called Lallan Va
[00:14:51] And
[00:14:52] When I wrote it
[00:14:53] For the
[00:14:54] Episode
[00:14:55] Me heer came up with
[00:14:56] The idea
[00:14:57] You know what if we
[00:14:58] Put a
[00:14:59] Give it a hip hop twist
[00:15:00] And I am like
[00:15:01] That's interesting
[00:15:02] Let me see what we can do
[00:15:03] So we just
[00:15:04] I just started
[00:15:05] Tickering around on my
[00:15:06] Like software
[00:15:07] Which is logic
[00:15:08] And I started tickering around
[00:15:09] And
[00:15:10] We came up with the
[00:15:11] Group
[00:15:12] Which was very hip hop
[00:15:13] With the bass line
[00:15:14] But the vocal delivery
[00:15:15] Was very
[00:15:16] Lustic
[00:15:17] And then we
[00:15:18] We were like
[00:15:19] Oh this sounds good
[00:15:20] So he was like
[00:15:21] Okay let's keep this version
[00:15:22] On the album
[00:15:23] And the folk version
[00:15:24] In the episode
[00:15:25] And I am like
[00:15:26] Okay that makes sense
[00:15:27] So that's how we came
[00:15:28] So a lot of these songs
[00:15:29] Were like very collaborative
[00:15:30] Between the director
[00:15:31] The lyricist
[00:15:32] And me
[00:15:33] And of course
[00:15:34] The musicians
[00:15:35] Like all of them
[00:15:36] I knew
[00:15:37] Like the songs wouldn't be
[00:15:38] Where they are
[00:15:39] Or what they would be
[00:15:40] If it wasn't for the musicians
[00:15:41] You know
[00:15:42] So yeah it was
[00:15:46] I feel like
[00:15:47] The reason I enjoyed it also
[00:15:49] Is because I was getting to learn
[00:15:51] So much more about
[00:15:52] How to write commercial music
[00:15:55] Which when you are
[00:15:57] Restricted the indie space
[00:15:59] For too long
[00:16:00] And when you are used
[00:16:01] To writing for yourself
[00:16:02] You don't realize that
[00:16:05] That
[00:16:06] Writing commercial music
[00:16:07] Is an art
[00:16:08] And
[00:16:09] It is very challenging
[00:16:10] Very challenging
[00:16:11] Sometimes I think
[00:16:12] That
[00:16:13] This
[00:16:14] Amit
[00:16:15] Pritendha
[00:16:16] Kaise
[00:16:17] Kaise means
[00:16:18] Every film
[00:16:19] Every song
[00:16:20] Is
[00:16:21] A song
[00:16:22] Even if
[00:16:23] You know
[00:16:24] Some of the
[00:16:26] Like some of the songs
[00:16:27] May not register
[00:16:30] With us
[00:16:31] Like say applications
[00:16:32] But the audience
[00:16:33] Just loves them
[00:16:34] Like they have cracked
[00:16:35] That
[00:16:36] There is something about
[00:16:37] The way they write
[00:16:39] The songs
[00:16:40] That audience
[00:16:41] Holds them
[00:16:42] You know
[00:16:43] You said that
[00:16:44] Commercial space
[00:16:45] Where
[00:16:46] Everything is done
[00:16:47] Everything is done
[00:16:48] And yet you have to
[00:16:49] Again
[00:16:51] You know
[00:16:52] Thousands of stories
[00:16:53] Are being
[00:16:54] Thousands of
[00:16:55] Crime thrillers
[00:16:56] Ya
[00:16:58] So the space
[00:16:59] Becomes more challenging
[00:17:00] Very challenging
[00:17:01] Absolutely
[00:17:02] So
[00:17:03] We are talking about
[00:17:04] Mirza Pud ki baat chal rahi hai
[00:17:05] So
[00:17:06] About folk music
[00:17:07] That we have talked about
[00:17:08] You know
[00:17:09] How
[00:17:10] What sort of
[00:17:11] Influences
[00:17:12] Have
[00:17:13] You know
[00:17:14] Happened in your life
[00:17:15] As a musician
[00:17:16] You know
[00:17:17] Agar folk
[00:17:18] Be
[00:17:19] Agar kabhi be
[00:17:20] Aapko
[00:17:21] Ya phir
[00:17:22] When you are doing
[00:17:23] A lot of your
[00:17:24] Independent music
[00:17:25] A lot of rock
[00:17:26] Is what
[00:17:27] We listen to
[00:17:28] So something about
[00:17:29] The influences
[00:17:30] In your life
[00:17:31] So
[00:17:32] When
[00:17:33] I was a child
[00:17:34] I was single
[00:17:35] And there was
[00:17:36] Being taught to me
[00:17:37] So my mother
[00:17:38] Is a huge fan
[00:17:39] Of classical
[00:17:40] Folk music
[00:17:41] From films
[00:17:42] That go as
[00:17:43] Like
[00:17:44] You know
[00:17:45] As back as
[00:17:46] 1950s
[00:17:47] I would say
[00:17:48] Ya
[00:17:49] So
[00:17:50] I grew up on
[00:17:51] A lot of that music
[00:17:52] And my father
[00:17:53] Grandmother
[00:17:54] Were a huge fan of
[00:17:55] Malayalam film songs
[00:17:56] And back then
[00:17:57] They were very classically
[00:17:58] You know
[00:17:59] Sort of
[00:18:00] They were based on
[00:18:01] A lot of
[00:18:02] Karanikla scheme
[00:18:03] So I grew up
[00:18:04] Listening to that
[00:18:05] A lot of it
[00:18:06] And then school
[00:18:07] Mai aisa hua ki
[00:18:08] Then people
[00:18:09] Somebody introduced me
[00:18:10] To Michael Jackson
[00:18:11] And then somebody
[00:18:12] Introduced me
[00:18:13] To Michael Numske Rock
[00:18:14] And you know
[00:18:15] All these artists
[00:18:16] And
[00:18:17] So I got into this
[00:18:18] Pop, electronic space
[00:18:19] While listening to them
[00:18:20] I think it was
[00:18:21] Around the 10th or 11th
[00:18:22] Standard when
[00:18:23] One of my friends gave me
[00:18:24] The first
[00:18:25] Gave me
[00:18:26] A Metallica album
[00:18:27] Or Blackout
[00:18:28] And
[00:18:29] When I heard that song
[00:18:30] I don't know if I was
[00:18:31] I was
[00:18:32] Why I was pissed off
[00:18:33] But I was just
[00:18:34] Still pissed off
[00:18:35] Because
[00:18:36] I was
[00:18:37] Why I was pissed off
[00:18:38] But I was just
[00:18:39] Still pissed off
[00:18:40] In music
[00:18:41] And I was a devil
[00:18:42] Without a cause
[00:18:43] Really
[00:18:44] Bas gusta tha
[00:18:45] Amjh
[00:18:46] And I was like
[00:18:47] Pahani kis thing pe
[00:18:48] Gusta hai
[00:18:49] But gusta hai
[00:18:50] And I thought
[00:18:51] That Metallica
[00:18:52] Would be
[00:18:53] In my cassette player
[00:18:54] And
[00:18:55] I remember my dad
[00:18:56] Had got near to
[00:18:57] Win one
[00:18:58] Because he knew
[00:18:59] How much I
[00:19:00] I would listen
[00:19:01] To hours
[00:19:02] And I was in music
[00:19:03] And the first time
[00:19:04] I heard
[00:19:05] So I
[00:19:06] It was
[00:19:07] Not the first song
[00:19:08] On the A side
[00:19:09] Of the album
[00:19:10] It was the second song
[00:19:11] Jaha pe
[00:19:12] Album rukhe bhi jit
[00:19:13] I played it
[00:19:14] It was a song
[00:19:15] Called Sad But True
[00:19:16] Which is a
[00:19:17] Really heavy
[00:19:18] Groovy song
[00:19:19] And I suddenly
[00:19:20] Like
[00:19:21] Wow
[00:19:22] What is this music
[00:19:23] I want to hear
[00:19:24] A part of it
[00:19:25] And that's how
[00:19:26] I got into metal
[00:19:27] And then
[00:19:28] In fact
[00:19:29] Interestingly enough
[00:19:30] I got into heavy
[00:19:31] Music first
[00:19:32] And then
[00:19:33] I started exploring
[00:19:34] More and more rock
[00:19:35] I started
[00:19:36] Writing
[00:19:37] Alice in a Chain
[00:19:38] And
[00:19:39] Lots of
[00:19:40] Lots of
[00:19:41] Creed
[00:19:42] Alter Pitch
[00:19:43] All of this
[00:19:44] You know
[00:19:45] I just got into the whole
[00:19:46] Alternate rock scene
[00:19:47] In addition to
[00:19:48] A lot of metal
[00:19:49] Like
[00:19:50] Metallica
[00:19:51] You know
[00:19:52] Black Sabbath
[00:19:53] Lamb of God
[00:19:54] All of this
[00:19:55] These
[00:19:56] So even now
[00:19:57] Everyday
[00:19:58] I listen to at least
[00:19:59] An hour of rock music
[00:20:00] It's just something that
[00:20:01] That's my staple
[00:20:02] In fact
[00:20:03] I was in a meeting
[00:20:04] Like one of these days
[00:20:05] A few weeks ago
[00:20:08] You know
[00:20:09] They said that
[00:20:10] Whatever music you've made us
[00:20:11] Listen to
[00:20:12] Eventually bring it back
[00:20:13] To some part of rock influence
[00:20:15] Which is very evident
[00:20:16] In your music
[00:20:17] You know
[00:20:18] And
[00:20:19] And because I also
[00:20:20] Trained in dramatic
[00:20:21] Vocals for like
[00:20:23] Nearly 20 years
[00:20:24] So there was like
[00:20:27] A fun mixture of
[00:20:30] You know
[00:20:31] Vocal melody
[00:20:32] With
[00:20:33] A sort of rock
[00:20:34] You know
[00:20:35] Sensibilities
[00:20:36] And I think somewhere
[00:20:37] Between
[00:20:38] In between
[00:20:39] I was a little saturated
[00:20:40] With rock music
[00:20:41] And I was like
[00:20:42] Okay let me listen to
[00:20:43] Something else
[00:20:44] And I used to
[00:20:45] At that point
[00:20:46] Up until that point in time
[00:20:47] I used to hate electronic music
[00:20:48] I was not a big fan
[00:20:49] Of medium or trance
[00:20:50] Or whatever
[00:20:51] But because I was so
[00:20:52] Saturated with the music
[00:20:53] I was listening to
[00:20:54] I started getting into
[00:20:55] Media
[00:20:56] And for some reason
[00:20:57] I was liking it
[00:20:58] Because it was so new
[00:20:59] And fresh for me
[00:21:00] So then I started
[00:21:01] Discovering these artists
[00:21:02] Like Infected Mushroom
[00:21:03] Castings
[00:21:05] You know
[00:21:06] Arm and Land
[00:21:07] And then I slowly
[00:21:08] Went into heavier forms
[00:21:09] Of music
[00:21:11] With Skrillex
[00:21:12] With you know
[00:21:13] All these
[00:21:15] Sort of now people
[00:21:16] Who are now popular
[00:21:17] Totally
[00:21:18] And I think all of that
[00:21:20] Really influenced me
[00:21:22] Into who I am today
[00:21:23] And I listen to
[00:21:24] Lot of old school hip hop as well
[00:21:26] And a few newer artists as well
[00:21:28] And there's a lot of
[00:21:29] Indian hip hop that I like
[00:21:30] You know
[00:21:31] There's Divine
[00:21:32] Delphi
[00:21:33] You know
[00:21:34] And I've been listening to
[00:21:35] A few of
[00:21:36] These new songs
[00:21:37] That Bacha has been putting out
[00:21:39] There's a song called Dark
[00:21:40] Yes
[00:21:41] Which is really catchy
[00:21:43] This vocalist
[00:21:45] Also a friend of mine
[00:21:46] Sharbhi
[00:21:47] She's a
[00:21:48] Same vocalist
[00:21:49] She is
[00:21:50] And the moment her part comes on
[00:21:52] You suddenly get
[00:21:53] This goosebump
[00:21:54] You feel
[00:21:55] Really good
[00:21:57] I just discovered
[00:21:58] Not just
[00:21:59] But like
[00:22:00] Few weeks ago
[00:22:01] When Sharbhi posted it
[00:22:02] On Instagram
[00:22:03] I just got like
[00:22:04] What is this chorus
[00:22:05] Let me just go listen to the song
[00:22:06] And it's pretty good
[00:22:07] It's good to see like
[00:22:09] You know
[00:22:10] Newer and fresher
[00:22:11] Kind of
[00:22:13] Sort of musical instruments
[00:22:14] Coming from 100
[00:22:16] Absolutely
[00:22:17] Hip hop ki aapne baat ki
[00:22:19] Obviously
[00:22:20] We have to talk about Bombay
[00:22:23] Showtime
[00:22:24] And
[00:22:25] Lovely
[00:22:26] Oh my god
[00:22:27] That just
[00:22:28] Sets in the tone
[00:22:29] Of
[00:22:30] That character
[00:22:31] Mumbai
[00:22:32] Mayanagari
[00:22:34] Bollywood
[00:22:35] Industry
[00:22:36] And all of that
[00:22:38] Series is about
[00:22:40] So let's talk about Showtime
[00:22:44] How crazy was it
[00:22:46] Again
[00:22:47] This was my third time
[00:22:48] Working in Meher
[00:22:49] And
[00:22:50] I remember
[00:22:52] After we finished
[00:22:53] Ma's room
[00:22:54] Meher was like
[00:22:55] Now I am working
[00:22:56] I am going to start working
[00:22:57] In something else
[00:22:58] After a break
[00:22:59] And that's going to be
[00:23:00] Fully commercial
[00:23:01] And I was like
[00:23:02] Ya man
[00:23:03] I need something
[00:23:04] Very commercial
[00:23:05] Because
[00:23:06] Ma's room was so
[00:23:07] Word music
[00:23:08] And Punjabi folk
[00:23:10] And the club was so
[00:23:11] Rustic
[00:23:12] You know
[00:23:13] And I wanted to do
[00:23:14] Something very commercial
[00:23:16] Something that
[00:23:17] Spoke to
[00:23:18] Consumers of
[00:23:19] Commercial music
[00:23:20] In cinema
[00:23:21] Right
[00:23:22] So I have been telling
[00:23:23] Meher ki
[00:23:24] Kuch karte
[00:23:25] And I have
[00:23:26] A lot of the times
[00:23:27] If I write
[00:23:28] A good song
[00:23:29] Send it to me
[00:23:30] Just give this a lesson
[00:23:31] That's it
[00:23:32] What comes out of it
[00:23:33] You know
[00:23:34] So
[00:23:35] Ma kuch no kuch aise karte
[00:23:36] Usko aapishah bishta rata
[00:23:37] So when we started
[00:23:40] Working on this album
[00:23:42] I think the first song
[00:23:43] We
[00:23:44] Did was
[00:23:45] A song called
[00:23:46] Har
[00:23:47] Because we
[00:23:48] Came in a situation
[00:23:49] And everything
[00:23:50] I was like
[00:23:51] Okay cool
[00:23:52] Let me see what
[00:23:53] I can do
[00:23:54] Like an album
[00:23:55] Then I sent him
[00:23:56] This is locked
[00:23:57] Let's just start
[00:23:58] Writing this
[00:23:59] And then
[00:24:00] And because
[00:24:01] Him and Gini
[00:24:02] Also have a great relationship
[00:24:03] Even before
[00:24:04] He called me
[00:24:05] Called Gini
[00:24:06] Listen I am doing
[00:24:07] This project on Showtime
[00:24:08] And you are
[00:24:09] Writing all the lyrics
[00:24:10] And then he called me
[00:24:11] And said listen
[00:24:12] Let's start
[00:24:13] I always
[00:24:14] Open my mind
[00:24:15] And I was like that
[00:24:16] And Gini is generally
[00:24:17] My natural choice
[00:24:18] For lyrics
[00:24:19] She wrote lyrics
[00:24:20] To me when I was nobody
[00:24:21] And I had no money
[00:24:22] To pay her
[00:24:23] You know
[00:24:24] I just called her
[00:24:25] And we were like
[00:24:26] I am just
[00:24:27] Working on a song back right now
[00:24:28] But I don't
[00:24:29] Know how to write
[00:24:30] Commercial lyrics
[00:24:31] I can write lyrics
[00:24:32] For my band
[00:24:33] But I can't
[00:24:34] Write commercial lyrics
[00:24:35] And she was like
[00:24:36] Yeah let's do it
[00:24:37] We should soak
[00:24:38] Some go about it
[00:24:39] And
[00:24:40] So she
[00:24:41] Always going to be
[00:24:42] My first choice
[00:24:43] She was there
[00:24:44] When
[00:24:45] I really needed
[00:24:46] Somebody
[00:24:47] You know
[00:24:48] And then
[00:24:49] She was like
[00:24:50] I am just
[00:24:51] Going to write
[00:24:52] Commercial lyrics
[00:24:53] And she was like
[00:24:54] I will give
[00:24:55] Somebody
[00:24:56] You know
[00:24:57] Kind of
[00:24:58] Give shape to my music
[00:24:59] Sure
[00:25:00] So
[00:25:01] Then with
[00:25:02] Bombay
[00:25:03] What happened was
[00:25:04] It wasn't even in
[00:25:05] The album consideration
[00:25:06] It was kind of
[00:25:07] The composition
[00:25:08] Written for another project
[00:25:09] That project
[00:25:10] It happened
[00:25:11] So when
[00:25:12] When I finished
[00:25:13] Writing it
[00:25:14] I just sent it
[00:25:15] To my ear
[00:25:16] You know
[00:25:17] Me, them
[00:25:18] What do you think
[00:25:19] Of this
[00:25:20] You feel like
[00:25:21] This is interesting
[00:25:22] You know
[00:25:23] जो भी हैं, तो वे जब अपने लेंगार था पर जब जब रहे हैं.
