Leading Lady of Casting Reveals Bollywood's Secrets

[00:00:02] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of people were misusing the power that they have,

[00:00:05] [SPEAKER_00]: you know in terms of sexual favors and all sorts of things

[00:00:08] [SPEAKER_00]: that, meh chance dungi dunga whatever,

[00:00:10] [SPEAKER_00]: that used to be a reality.

[00:00:12] [SPEAKER_02]: What kind of money do casting directors pay?

[00:00:14] [SPEAKER_00]: 12 and 22, 23 lakhs for a project.

[00:00:18] [SPEAKER_00]: One Netflix's contract will come to you

[00:00:20] [SPEAKER_00]: or Amazon's contract or Hotstar's contract will come to you.

[00:00:23] [SPEAKER_00]: That's your fees as a casting director for your services.

[00:00:26] [SPEAKER_00]: Now everyone else that's casted in the film or the show

[00:00:30] [SPEAKER_00]: is paid by the production house.

[00:00:32] [SPEAKER_00]: So firstly we got that project in a lockdown,

[00:00:34] [SPEAKER_00]: we were trying to recreate a very big hit show

[00:00:36] [SPEAKER_00]: from the Spanish Netflix which was elite

[00:00:39] [SPEAKER_00]: into an Indian show and find nine fresh faces.

[00:00:44] [SPEAKER_00]: All of them had to be innately Indian,

[00:00:47] [SPEAKER_00]: raw, sexy and cool at the same time.

[00:01:15] [SPEAKER_02]: in the casting directing space

[00:01:17] [SPEAKER_02]: where you help talent come into life

[00:01:20] [SPEAKER_02]: and bring them into existence.

[00:01:22] [SPEAKER_02]: And in India, I mean it's known as the capital

[00:01:25] [SPEAKER_02]: of acting so many people from abroad join in.

[00:01:28] [SPEAKER_02]: We have so many Indians coming in

[00:01:30] [SPEAKER_02]: and you're like at the forefront of getting people,

[00:01:33] [SPEAKER_02]: you know, join the workforce.

[00:01:34] [SPEAKER_02]: I mean it's like a big responsibility to have

[00:01:37] [SPEAKER_02]: but before we get into it,

[00:01:38] [SPEAKER_02]: tell me how did your journey into the media industry

[00:01:42] [SPEAKER_02]: and casting space even start?

[00:01:45] [SPEAKER_00]: So firstly thank you so much for having me

[00:01:46] [SPEAKER_00]: and for those very kind words.

[00:01:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I always think of myself as myself,

[00:01:52] [SPEAKER_00]: like work, I'm a work in progress human being.

[00:01:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So it's nice to hear that.

[00:01:58] [SPEAKER_00]: So basically I grew up in a school in Bandra.

[00:02:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm born and brought up in Mumbai.

[00:02:04] [SPEAKER_00]: I think a part of my mom's family actually is,

[00:02:07] [SPEAKER_00]: has some influences of the industry.

[00:02:09] [SPEAKER_00]: So I have sort of grown up in a home

[00:02:11] [SPEAKER_00]: where the movies were always a big part

[00:02:13] [SPEAKER_00]: of you know conversations and the household

[00:02:16] [SPEAKER_00]: and me, my mom, my sister, all three are massive

[00:02:18] [SPEAKER_00]: like movie buffs so we love going to the movies.

[00:02:21] [SPEAKER_02]: And how was your mom's family linked with movies?

[00:02:24] [SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of my people from my mom's family

[00:02:26] [SPEAKER_00]: are also working in the industry,

[00:02:28] [SPEAKER_00]: are you know either as directors or production houses.

[00:02:31] [SPEAKER_00]: So I have kind of had and growing up in a household

[00:02:35] [SPEAKER_00]: where films were very you know fondly spoken about.

[00:02:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Everyone was always giving, nobody was interested

[00:02:41] [SPEAKER_00]: but everyone was giving their reviews

[00:02:42] [SPEAKER_00]: on every movie that they watched

[00:02:44] [SPEAKER_00]: and lots of discussions on like

[00:02:46] [SPEAKER_00]: you know what was missing in a film

[00:02:48] [SPEAKER_00]: and who they liked, who they didn't.

[00:02:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So we had a lot of that like you know

[00:02:51] [SPEAKER_00]: movie watching culture in the house in general.

[00:02:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So I think it was quite, it was a very normal

[00:02:57] [SPEAKER_00]: sort of tumbling into this industry for me

[00:03:00] [SPEAKER_00]: because it just came very naturally

[00:03:03] [SPEAKER_00]: for both me and my sister.

[00:03:04] [SPEAKER_00]: My sister also works in the industry.

[00:03:06] [SPEAKER_00]: She works as a celebrity stylist.

[00:03:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Her name is Tanya Gavri.

[00:03:09] [SPEAKER_00]: So we both just kind of stumbled into the same industry

[00:03:13] [SPEAKER_00]: and obviously because she works as a stylist

[00:03:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and I work as a cast director

[00:03:16] [SPEAKER_00]: we've not crossed paths in the work life.

[00:03:19] [SPEAKER_00]: No not yet.

[00:03:20] [SPEAKER_00]: No not yet actually.

[00:03:21] [SPEAKER_00]: How?

[00:03:22] [SPEAKER_00]: It just not happened because my sister does a lot more

[00:03:24] [SPEAKER_00]: like personal styling for celebrities than I.

[00:03:27] [SPEAKER_00]: So she works with a lot of people that I've cast.

[00:03:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Like I've casted or I've worked in movies

[00:03:33] [SPEAKER_00]: that they've been a part of so indirectly

[00:03:35] [SPEAKER_00]: but not quite directly.

[00:03:37] [SPEAKER_02]: Got it, so that is how you picked up this

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_02]: bagal volume.

[00:03:40] [SPEAKER_00]: No so then it was college obviously.

[00:03:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I was clueless like any other 15, 16 year old.

[00:03:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't quite know what I wanted to do

[00:03:47] [SPEAKER_00]: but I knew I wanted to work at the movies.

[00:03:49] [SPEAKER_00]: That was clear.

[00:03:50] [SPEAKER_00]: So I went ahead and I joined working as an assistant

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: director.

[00:03:54] [SPEAKER_00]: I was only like maybe 17 or 18 so I started off very early

[00:03:58] [SPEAKER_00]: and I think we'll speak about that later

[00:04:00] [SPEAKER_00]: but how that kind of gave me an edge later on

[00:04:03] [SPEAKER_00]: and I'm very proud that I made that decision

[00:04:05] [SPEAKER_00]: early on in life.

[00:04:07] [SPEAKER_00]: I went ahead and I assisted on a film called

[00:04:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Wake Up Sid which we all have watched.

[00:04:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah of course.

[00:04:12] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was kind of, maybe you would call it kismet

[00:04:15] [SPEAKER_00]: but I was kind of put onto casting

[00:04:17] [SPEAKER_00]: as my very first job in life.

[00:04:19] [SPEAKER_02]: You didn't choose it, it chose you?

[00:04:21] [SPEAKER_00]: It chose me yeah.

[00:04:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Because no but you don't get to choose anything

[00:04:24] [SPEAKER_00]: when you're an assistant director in a movie

[00:04:28] [SPEAKER_00]: which is a dharma production and is a banner.

[00:04:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I didn't get to choose, I was just put on

[00:04:35] [SPEAKER_00]: I was put onto the film as an assistant director

[00:04:38] [SPEAKER_00]: and as a DA really which is a director's assistant

[00:04:40] [SPEAKER_00]: and then you kind of are the right hand.

[00:04:43] [SPEAKER_00]: To the director.

[00:04:44] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah and you're gonna help them through different.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Roles.

[00:04:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah roles exactly but I was designated to casting

[00:04:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and at the time Nandini Srikant who's still

[00:04:53] [SPEAKER_00]: a very very renowned casting director

[00:04:57] [SPEAKER_00]: was casting the film and I worked under her for a year

[00:05:00] [SPEAKER_00]: and then I kind of just, so it was literally

[00:05:03] [SPEAKER_00]: like it chose me like you said.

[00:05:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I was just put onto casting

[00:05:06] [SPEAKER_00]: and then today I'm still casting.

[00:05:08] [SPEAKER_02]: And you loved it so much that you decided

[00:05:10] [SPEAKER_02]: that this will be your lighter work?

[00:05:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean it's kind of, I think when you're that young

[00:05:13] [SPEAKER_00]: you know it's like things just kind of happen

[00:05:16] [SPEAKER_00]: and then it's not like you make some big decision

[00:05:18] [SPEAKER_00]: that I'm gonna do this for the rest of my life.

[00:05:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Like I didn't have one of those eureka moments

[00:05:23] [SPEAKER_00]: but I just started to do it, I realized

[00:05:26] [SPEAKER_00]: and I mean a lot of casting directors will agree

[00:05:29] [SPEAKER_00]: that our casting is highly, it's a people's,

[00:05:34] [SPEAKER_00]: you have to be a people's person right?

[00:05:36] [SPEAKER_00]: Because our main job is dealing with people

[00:05:39] [SPEAKER_00]: and actors so you have to have a certain knack

[00:05:42] [SPEAKER_00]: for dealing with people and so that was one thing

[00:05:46] [SPEAKER_00]: that I knew inherently was part of my personality

[00:05:49] [SPEAKER_00]: and the second thing was that I enjoyed

[00:05:51] [SPEAKER_00]: you know doing auditions and you know curating

[00:05:54] [SPEAKER_00]: which ones were better and like directing them

[00:05:56] [SPEAKER_00]: and like all of that was really fun for me.

[00:05:59] [SPEAKER_00]: It didn't come with any baggage

[00:06:00] [SPEAKER_00]: that this is my moment of deciding

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_00]: that I have to do this.

[00:06:02] [SPEAKER_00]: But you didn't ever think of becoming an actress?

[00:06:05] [SPEAKER_00]: So I did do some plays as an actor obviously

[00:06:08] [SPEAKER_00]: but to be honest I was very early on

[00:06:11] [SPEAKER_00]: because it was mainly my sister and my mom.

[00:06:14] [SPEAKER_00]: The three of us were living together,

[00:06:15] [SPEAKER_00]: my parents had been separated when I was much younger.

[00:06:19] [SPEAKER_00]: I think the responsibility of sort of

[00:06:22] [SPEAKER_00]: to take on responsibility to be financially independent

[00:06:24] [SPEAKER_00]: came very early in life so I knew that acting

[00:06:27] [SPEAKER_00]: is something that is a, it's the long haul.

[00:06:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Like you have to be very passionate about acting

[00:06:34] [SPEAKER_00]: and then give it your, you don't know

[00:06:36] [SPEAKER_00]: when you're going to, I mean this is something

[00:06:37] [SPEAKER_00]: that all actors, we say this to actors also

[00:06:40] [SPEAKER_00]: that you don't know when the opportunity will come.

[00:06:42] [SPEAKER_00]: You just have to put your head down and keep working.

[00:06:44] [SPEAKER_00]: So I don't think at that time I was ready

[00:06:46] [SPEAKER_00]: to give that kind of commitment.

[00:06:48] [SPEAKER_00]: Like I wanted to get my, get started with my life.

[00:06:51] [SPEAKER_00]: So I was interested in the arts obviously

[00:06:54] [SPEAKER_00]: but I quickly chose the field.

[00:06:55] [SPEAKER_00]: I was like okay I think I can do this on my own

[00:06:58] [SPEAKER_00]: so I assisted for a year.

[00:07:00] [SPEAKER_00]: I quit college so I'm a dropout.

[00:07:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Really?

[00:07:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah I didn't complete my education.

[00:07:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Which year did you drop out?

[00:07:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I did my first year BA and then I dropped out.

[00:07:07] [SPEAKER_02]: What?

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.

[00:07:08] [SPEAKER_02]: Why?

[00:07:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Mom was not too happy about that as you would know.

[00:07:12] [SPEAKER_00]: Just because I was working simultaneously

[00:07:15] [SPEAKER_00]: on the set of Wake Up Sid and I couldn't have done that

[00:07:20] [SPEAKER_00]: if I continued because they're not gonna make exceptions

[00:07:22] [SPEAKER_00]: for you to go to college.

[00:07:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Especially when you're a director.

[00:07:25] [SPEAKER_00]: So I had to make a choice and I made the choice

[00:07:27] [SPEAKER_00]: and then I went, so I quit my studies.

[00:07:30] [SPEAKER_00]: So my mom is actually a graduate and I'm not.

[00:07:35] [SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god and then you don't regret the decision at all?

[00:07:38] [SPEAKER_00]: No not at all no.

[00:07:40] [SPEAKER_00]: But I mean of course I'm not saying

[00:07:41] [SPEAKER_00]: that I would trade mark that and tell everyone to do it.

[00:07:44] [SPEAKER_00]: No actually if I look back I think that it was a matter

[00:07:47] [SPEAKER_00]: of just two years I would have completed and got a degree.

[00:07:49] [SPEAKER_00]: So it's not a regret but I think that

[00:07:54] [SPEAKER_00]: it would have been nice to finish my education for sure

[00:07:57] [SPEAKER_00]: and have a degree because I think that it does matter

[00:08:01] [SPEAKER_00]: to have one because eventually for whatever reasons

[00:08:04] [SPEAKER_00]: if I decide to do something else at another point

[00:08:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I think having the degree does matter a bit.

[00:08:09] [SPEAKER_00]: Now I'm obviously not looking to do anything else.

[00:08:12] [SPEAKER_00]: I haven't thought about that but you never know in life.

[00:08:16] [SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like if it's a matter of a year or two

[00:08:18] [SPEAKER_00]: I would always endorse completing your education.

[00:08:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Did that have a big effect on my career?

[00:08:24] [SPEAKER_00]: No, no.

[00:08:25] [SPEAKER_02]: Of course I mean we have so many creators and artists

[00:08:28] [SPEAKER_02]: who are dropouts and are still doing so well.

[00:08:31] [SPEAKER_02]: But tell me like.

[00:08:32] [SPEAKER_00]: I think life teaches you.

[00:08:33] [SPEAKER_00]: I think experiences teach you.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah they teach you more than this.

[00:08:35] [SPEAKER_00]: So it's not always bookish knowledge.

[00:08:37] [SPEAKER_00]: In fact I think even like school life was amazing

[00:08:41] [SPEAKER_00]: but I feel like life taught me more than school taught me.

[00:08:45] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah of course.

[00:08:46] [SPEAKER_02]: That's there for any entrepreneur for that matter

[00:08:49] [SPEAKER_02]: and you're like one of them starting your own company.

[00:08:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah and then I just kind of went for it.

[00:08:53] [SPEAKER_00]: I went to New York, I did a diploma,

[00:08:56] [SPEAKER_00]: short degree at Lee Strasburg

[00:08:57] [SPEAKER_00]: which is also a film school in New York.

[00:09:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Did a combination. What did you study?

[00:09:02] [SPEAKER_00]: So I did a combination of actually it is obviously

[00:09:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean it is important to know what it's like

[00:09:07] [SPEAKER_00]: to be in front of the camera, to be behind the camera.

[00:09:10] [SPEAKER_00]: So I took a combination of like film and acting.

[00:09:14] [SPEAKER_00]: So I had some acting classes

[00:09:15] [SPEAKER_00]: and then I also took a class called audition protocol

[00:09:18] [SPEAKER_00]: which was really interesting actually.

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay what was it?

[00:09:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Which basically teaches you

[00:09:21] [SPEAKER_00]: the dos and don'ts of auditioning culture.

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Wow.

[00:09:23] [SPEAKER_00]: So we tried to inculcate a lot of that

[00:09:25] [SPEAKER_00]: in our studio as well.

[00:09:26] [SPEAKER_02]: Like can you tell a little bit of that?

[00:09:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Like how to prep for a scene,

[00:09:30] [SPEAKER_00]: to never step over and tell your co-actors

[00:09:32] [SPEAKER_00]: how to say their lines.

[00:09:34] [SPEAKER_00]: A lot of protocol stuff like you know

[00:09:38] [SPEAKER_00]: just like not coming too over prepared with lines

[00:09:42] [SPEAKER_00]: because then it's difficult for a director to

[00:09:45] [SPEAKER_00]: get it naturally. Break out of that.

[00:09:47] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah so a lot of like small anecdotes

[00:09:50] [SPEAKER_00]: that are important for us to know when we audition

[00:09:52] [SPEAKER_00]: when you're a part of the auditioning culture even

[00:09:54] [SPEAKER_00]: which is like come on time.

[00:09:57] [SPEAKER_00]: You know perhaps come a few minutes earlier

[00:09:59] [SPEAKER_00]: than your audition time.

[00:10:01] [SPEAKER_00]: Often in the casting studio we do rolling lunches.

[00:10:04] [SPEAKER_00]: Rolling lunches is like we don't break for

[00:10:06] [SPEAKER_00]: we don't take an hour off for lunch.

[00:10:08] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh you hide out the food?

[00:10:09] [SPEAKER_00]: It's like a few people will be eating

[00:10:10] [SPEAKER_00]: and few people will be working

[00:10:12] [SPEAKER_00]: and then when they're done eating

[00:10:13] [SPEAKER_00]: there'll be fewer which means that

[00:10:15] [SPEAKER_00]: when somebody runs in a bit too late

[00:10:17] [SPEAKER_00]: for an audition it ruins our lunch.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah correct correct.

[00:10:20] [SPEAKER_00]: Because that's how it's planned.

[00:10:23] [SPEAKER_00]: So when everyone's running late

[00:10:24] [SPEAKER_00]: then the team is not eaten until 4 p.m.

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_01]: Oh.

[00:10:27] [SPEAKER_00]: You know so things like that.

[00:10:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Like I think that like a little bit of like

[00:10:31] [SPEAKER_00]: etiquette.

[00:10:32] [SPEAKER_00]: It's literally like we have etiquette in life

[00:10:33] [SPEAKER_00]: and hence we should have etiquette even

[00:10:35] [SPEAKER_00]: in the auditioning world.

[00:10:37] [SPEAKER_00]: And I think that people have adapted to it

[00:10:39] [SPEAKER_00]: really well now.

[00:10:41] [SPEAKER_00]: Like even like you can't just come in without

[00:10:43] [SPEAKER_00]: the if you've given you a hair and makeup

[00:10:46] [SPEAKER_00]: and look reference of what you should

[00:10:48] [SPEAKER_00]: look like then you can't come in something

[00:10:50] [SPEAKER_00]: completely opposite to that.

[00:10:52] [SPEAKER_00]: Like basic following of rules yeah.

[00:10:55] [SPEAKER_00]: Which I think in India is like

[00:10:56] [SPEAKER_00]: it has been a slow process for us to

[00:10:59] [SPEAKER_00]: let people know

[00:11:00] [SPEAKER_00]: that you can't show up.

[00:11:03] [SPEAKER_00]: There's a there's a method to the madness.

[00:11:05] [SPEAKER_00]: Correct correct.

[00:11:06] [SPEAKER_00]: So we have to follow that.

[00:11:07] [SPEAKER_00]: But I think in India what happens is

[00:11:09] [SPEAKER_00]: that people are so fascinated by the

[00:11:11] [SPEAKER_00]: glamour aspect of the job becoming

[00:11:16] [SPEAKER_00]: an actor or a star.

[00:11:17] [SPEAKER_00]: So to say that sometimes you

[00:11:19] [SPEAKER_00]: you just say anyone comes to try you know.

[00:11:23] [SPEAKER_00]: Without taking the responsibility to

[00:11:26] [SPEAKER_00]: give some time to the craft if you

[00:11:28] [SPEAKER_00]: genuinely want to be an actor to learn

[00:11:30] [SPEAKER_00]: the craft of course we'll get into the

[00:11:32] [SPEAKER_00]: deep dive of that maybe a little later.

[00:11:35] [SPEAKER_00]: But yeah that's how casting happened

[00:11:36] [SPEAKER_00]: and then I just started off small

[00:11:38] [SPEAKER_00]: with advertising and like approaching

[00:11:40] [SPEAKER_00]: advertising offices and like begging

[00:11:43] [SPEAKER_00]: for work just like anyone else would.

[00:11:45] [SPEAKER_02]: But you didn't want to work in

[00:11:47] [SPEAKER_02]: Hollywood for a while.

[00:11:48] [SPEAKER_00]: No because it no I've never had that.

[00:11:51] [SPEAKER_00]: They have this option there's an

[00:11:52] [SPEAKER_00]: optional training program that you can

[00:11:53] [SPEAKER_00]: opt for after you study abroad.

[00:11:56] [SPEAKER_00]: Firstly it's a tedious process you

[00:11:57] [SPEAKER_00]: have to do a lot of other odd jobs

[00:12:00] [SPEAKER_00]: while also you know I think I was

[00:12:02] [SPEAKER_00]: quite clear that I want to work in India

[00:12:03] [SPEAKER_00]: and I think it was the best decision.

[00:12:05] [SPEAKER_00]: I would say this to all students

[00:12:07] [SPEAKER_00]: that are you know that are studying

[00:12:08] [SPEAKER_00]: internationally I think India is a

[00:12:10] [SPEAKER_00]: great place to be.

[00:12:11] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah it's a hot spot so of course

[00:12:13] [SPEAKER_00]: and it's like we're seeing such

[00:12:15] [SPEAKER_00]: insane growth in the country and

[00:12:17] [SPEAKER_00]: the economy that we definitely want

[00:12:18] [SPEAKER_00]: to be a part of like the growing story.

[00:12:21] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah 100 percent.

[00:12:22] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah there was no two questions about that.

[00:12:24] [SPEAKER_02]: Garish when you came back how

[00:12:26] [SPEAKER_02]: did you start hunting for jobs?

[00:12:28] [SPEAKER_00]: So I did do some theatre which was

[00:12:30] [SPEAKER_00]: amazing with AK Various I did a bunch

[00:12:32] [SPEAKER_00]: of plays super creative process still

[00:12:35] [SPEAKER_00]: so closely working with you know

[00:12:37] [SPEAKER_00]: Akash Kurana I did three seasons I've

[00:12:38] [SPEAKER_00]: done three seasons of Mismatched.

[00:12:41] [SPEAKER_00]: So really full circle because I

[00:12:43] [SPEAKER_00]: started off with like a show that

[00:12:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I did a play that Adhar Kurana was

[00:12:47] [SPEAKER_00]: directing and Akash was running this

[00:12:49] [SPEAKER_00]: theatre company and then I sort of

[00:12:51] [SPEAKER_00]: quickly realized that okay I want to

[00:12:53] [SPEAKER_00]: be independent so I did some

[00:13:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Nandini thankfully Nandini was like

[00:13:12] [SPEAKER_00]: a big name so there was some merit

[00:13:14] [SPEAKER_00]: because of that and then I just said

[00:13:17] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah I just went in.

[00:13:18] [SPEAKER_02]: Like give me an example of how it

[00:13:19] [SPEAKER_02]: happened the first client that you

[00:13:21] [SPEAKER_02]: got on your own.

[00:13:22] [SPEAKER_00]: So I did a lot I did a bunch of ads

[00:13:25] [SPEAKER_00]: with asylum films and off-road

[00:13:28] [SPEAKER_00]: films which was like my first few

[00:13:31] [SPEAKER_00]: production houses that I worked with

[00:13:32] [SPEAKER_00]: nothing I think the advertising

[00:13:34] [SPEAKER_00]: industry is very cutthroat so if

[00:13:36] [SPEAKER_00]: there's a young person with the

[00:13:39] [SPEAKER_00]: right energy who will do it the

[00:13:41] [SPEAKER_00]: job for cheaper they really don't mind.

[00:13:44] Yeah.

[00:13:46] [SPEAKER_00]: So that's how it just happened

[00:13:48] [SPEAKER_00]: yeah you write to a bunch of people

[00:13:50] [SPEAKER_00]: and one person agrees.

[00:13:51] [SPEAKER_00]: One person agrees you get your first

[00:13:53] [SPEAKER_00]: break.

[00:13:54] [SPEAKER_00]: So who agreed?

[00:13:55] [SPEAKER_00]: I did one of the it was actually

[00:13:57] [SPEAKER_00]: quite a cool ad.

[00:13:58] [SPEAKER_00]: I did one of those back in the day

[00:13:59] [SPEAKER_00]: fast track ads for Bharatsika.

[00:14:01] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that was a really cool

[00:14:03] [SPEAKER_00]: ad it had Paloma, Mona Appa in it

[00:14:05] [SPEAKER_00]: and it was a very cool ad it was

[00:14:08] [SPEAKER_00]: it was a very cool looking ad and

[00:14:10] [SPEAKER_00]: Bharatsika I directed it was

[00:14:12] [SPEAKER_00]: really aesthetically ahead of its

[00:14:14] [SPEAKER_00]: time very cool looking ad and then

[00:14:17] [SPEAKER_00]: that then that became my like.

[00:14:19] [SPEAKER_02]: So they gave you the casting

[00:14:20] [SPEAKER_02]: project to get people?

[00:14:21] [SPEAKER_00]: They gave me the casting project to

[00:14:23] [SPEAKER_00]: get the people together from in the

[00:14:24] [SPEAKER_00]: ad and once you have that on your

[00:14:26] [SPEAKER_00]: resume then yeah when you start

[00:14:28] [SPEAKER_00]: showing that work to represent the

[00:14:30] [SPEAKER_00]: kind but I think the bigger

[00:14:31] [SPEAKER_00]: challenge was switching from the

[00:14:34] [SPEAKER_00]: bigger challenge is always in the

[00:14:36] [SPEAKER_00]: industry switching from advertising

[00:14:37] [SPEAKER_00]: to film because film of course now

[00:14:40] [SPEAKER_00]: OTT is a much more newer phenomena

[00:14:42] [SPEAKER_00]: that wasn't there earlier.

[00:14:44] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that switch was the one

[00:14:47] [SPEAKER_00]: that was challenging but that it

[00:14:49] [SPEAKER_00]: takes time to make that switch.

[00:14:50] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah but before we get into that

[00:14:52] [SPEAKER_02]: tell me how did you find people to

[00:14:54] [SPEAKER_02]: cast for that fast track ad?

[00:14:56] [SPEAKER_00]: So I was good with getting

[00:14:57] [SPEAKER_00]: people's numbers there was no

[00:14:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Instagram.

[00:14:59] [SPEAKER_02]: Then how would you do it?

[00:15:00] [SPEAKER_00]: Just through and through people

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_00]: like I would see.

[00:15:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Give me some story.

[00:15:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Like let's say Facebook at the

[00:15:05] [SPEAKER_00]: time we used a lot more

[00:15:06] [SPEAKER_00]: Facebook you would see like you

[00:15:08] [SPEAKER_00]: would go onto an actor's profile

[00:15:09] [SPEAKER_00]: that you don't know and then you

[00:15:11] [SPEAKER_00]: would see who the common friends

[00:15:13] [SPEAKER_00]: are and then you tap into the

[00:15:15] [SPEAKER_00]: common friend and then message

[00:15:16] [SPEAKER_00]: the common friend to somehow get

[00:15:17] [SPEAKER_00]: the actors number.

[00:15:18] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh God.

[00:15:19] [SPEAKER_00]: This was the process of course

[00:15:21] [SPEAKER_00]: things have changed leaps and

[00:15:23] [SPEAKER_00]: bounds since I first started I

[00:15:25] [SPEAKER_00]: was like 21 or 22 now I'm 33 so

[00:15:28] [SPEAKER_00]: it was a long time ago but yeah

[00:15:30] [SPEAKER_00]: like through and through friends

[00:15:32] [SPEAKER_00]: was a way that we connected

[00:15:34] [SPEAKER_00]: with actors so you knew that

[00:15:36] [SPEAKER_00]: somebody knew somebody who knew

[00:15:38] [SPEAKER_00]: an actor so you would get in

[00:15:40] [SPEAKER_00]: touch with them.

[00:15:41] [SPEAKER_02]: And was convincing the actors

[00:15:42] [SPEAKER_02]: a difficult part or you would

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_02]: get them easier?

[00:15:44] [SPEAKER_00]: No I mean if the scripts were

[00:15:45] [SPEAKER_00]: nice then the actors are like

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: happy to test.

[00:15:48] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that time was a little

[00:15:51] [SPEAKER_00]: bit different because again in

[00:15:52] [SPEAKER_00]: advertising you're not going

[00:15:53] [SPEAKER_00]: with the bigger bigger names

[00:16:13] [SPEAKER_00]: Dharma Productions she's a

[00:16:15] [SPEAKER_00]: legit girl and if she's getting

[00:16:17] [SPEAKER_00]: a project to us then so it is

[00:16:19] [SPEAKER_00]: a lot of like also like like

[00:16:21] [SPEAKER_00]: I said it is a lot of

[00:16:22] [SPEAKER_00]: relationship building and how

[00:16:24] [SPEAKER_00]: much people trust you a little

[00:16:26] [SPEAKER_00]: bit of like your circuit.

[00:16:29] [SPEAKER_00]: You know if they know that

[00:16:31] [SPEAKER_00]: you're if you come with some

[00:16:33] [SPEAKER_00]: legitimate sort of background

[00:16:35] [SPEAKER_00]: and it's easier for them to

[00:16:36] [SPEAKER_00]: trust you.

[00:16:37] [SPEAKER_00]: So I think that kind of

[00:16:38] [SPEAKER_00]: worked for me which is that

[00:16:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I was anyway a Bombay kid

[00:16:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm born and brought up here

[00:16:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I did have some connects in

[00:16:44] [SPEAKER_00]: the industry so I just used

[00:16:45] [SPEAKER_00]: that to my advantage to like

[00:16:47] [SPEAKER_00]: get in touch with actors and

[00:16:48] [SPEAKER_00]: like convince them to do

[00:16:50] [SPEAKER_02]: but do you think if you

[00:16:52] [SPEAKER_02]: didn't have any connects in

[00:16:54] [SPEAKER_02]: the house regarding the movie

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_02]: industry.

[00:16:56] [SPEAKER_00]: I think that the connect in

[00:16:57] [SPEAKER_00]: the house was not something

[00:16:58] [SPEAKER_00]: that's really facilitated my

[00:17:00] [SPEAKER_00]: casting career.

[00:17:01] [SPEAKER_00]: It's just been there.

[00:17:02] [SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that is only it's

[00:17:04] [SPEAKER_00]: it's only that it's been up

[00:17:06] [SPEAKER_00]: that the passion for films came

[00:17:08] [SPEAKER_00]: from there but I didn't

[00:17:13] [SPEAKER_00]: get to where I am to.

[00:17:22] [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, tell me how did that

[00:17:23] [SPEAKER_02]: come into existence?

[00:17:24] [SPEAKER_00]: So wake up sit was produced

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_00]: by Dharma.

[00:17:26] [SPEAKER_00]: My very first tint was them.

[00:17:28] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[00:17:29] [SPEAKER_00]: And then the story about how

[00:17:30] [SPEAKER_00]: I got brothers which was my

[00:17:31] [SPEAKER_00]: first big film for them is

[00:17:33] [SPEAKER_00]: actually quite a funny one.

[00:17:34] [SPEAKER_00]: So I'll tell you that story.

[00:17:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I was very young.

[00:17:38] [SPEAKER_00]: I was like 22 or something.

[00:17:40] [SPEAKER_00]: I had never casted like a

[00:17:41] [SPEAKER_00]: big film independently.

[00:17:42] [SPEAKER_00]: I'd only worked under Nandini

[00:17:44] [SPEAKER_00]: and then the first AD Santosh

[00:17:46] [SPEAKER_00]: is a very close friend of mine

[00:17:48] [SPEAKER_00]: because he was also an AD on

[00:17:49] [SPEAKER_00]: wake up sit and he called me

[00:17:50] [SPEAKER_00]: and he was like, you know,

[00:17:52] [SPEAKER_00]: brother was this big film.

[00:17:53] [SPEAKER_00]: It had like Akshay Kumar

[00:17:54] [SPEAKER_00]: and Siddharth Malhotra

[00:17:56] [SPEAKER_00]: and eventually we got

[00:17:57] [SPEAKER_00]: Jacqueline on board.

[00:17:59] [SPEAKER_00]: And Jackie Shroff and all these

[00:18:00] [SPEAKER_00]: big names and they were like

[00:18:02] [SPEAKER_00]: you know they're looking for

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_00]: a casting director.

[00:18:03] [SPEAKER_00]: Do you want to come in and

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_00]: take a meeting?

[00:18:05] [SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, are you mad?

[00:18:07] [SPEAKER_00]: Not at all.

[00:18:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I'm not

[00:18:09] [SPEAKER_00]: experienced enough to do

[00:18:11] [SPEAKER_00]: this film. I'm like still

[00:18:12] [SPEAKER_00]: doing advertising.

[00:18:13] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm not like really

[00:18:15] [SPEAKER_00]: jumped into and I don't have

[00:18:17] [SPEAKER_00]: a team or an office

[00:18:18] [SPEAKER_00]: or any of those basic things

[00:18:21] [SPEAKER_00]: and I had planned this

[00:18:22] [SPEAKER_00]: amazing trip to go to Rome

[00:18:25] [SPEAKER_00]: with my now husband

[00:18:26] [SPEAKER_00]: and then boyfriend

[00:18:27] [SPEAKER_00]: and I was like, I'm going

[00:18:28] [SPEAKER_00]: to Rome.

[00:18:29] [SPEAKER_00]: I booked my tickets,

[00:18:30] [SPEAKER_00]: Florence, Florence, super fun

[00:18:32] [SPEAKER_00]: plan I made and then Santosh

[00:18:34] [SPEAKER_00]: this friend of mine was

[00:18:34] [SPEAKER_00]: like, listen, I think you

[00:18:35] [SPEAKER_00]: should, you know, just

[00:18:37] [SPEAKER_00]: we're meeting casting

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_00]: directors right now.

[00:18:38] [SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you just come in

[00:18:39] [SPEAKER_00]: and take the meeting

[00:18:40] [SPEAKER_00]: and I was like, I mean sure

[00:18:43] [SPEAKER_00]: why not if you'll give me

[00:18:45] [SPEAKER_00]: the opportunity to take a

[00:18:47] [SPEAKER_00]: meeting with like a

[00:18:48] [SPEAKER_00]: established director.

[00:18:49] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll try and come and at

[00:18:50] [SPEAKER_00]: least put a face to a name

[00:18:51] [SPEAKER_00]: and you know, at least

[00:18:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I'll feel like a casting

[00:18:54] [SPEAKER_00]: director. So he was like,

[00:18:55] [SPEAKER_00]: okay, we'll set up a

[00:18:56] [SPEAKER_00]: meeting and stuff and

[00:18:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Karan Malhotra is this

[00:19:00] [SPEAKER_00]: excellent director who's

[00:19:01] [SPEAKER_00]: kind of been around in

[00:19:02] [SPEAKER_00]: the industry for really

[00:19:03] [SPEAKER_00]: long. Like he's super

[00:19:05] [SPEAKER_00]: senior in the scene and

[00:19:06] [SPEAKER_00]: I was still like very,

[00:19:08] [SPEAKER_00]: very young and fresh.

[00:19:09] [SPEAKER_00]: So I kind of went into this

[00:19:11] [SPEAKER_00]: meeting and you know, I

[00:19:12] [SPEAKER_00]: was very respectful and

[00:19:14] [SPEAKER_00]: I met him and I had

[00:19:15] [SPEAKER_00]: absolutely no, I think

[00:19:17] [SPEAKER_00]: that there may have been

[00:19:19] [SPEAKER_00]: a comfort in the way I

[00:19:21] [SPEAKER_00]: presented myself because

[00:19:23] [SPEAKER_00]: there was absolutely no

[00:19:25] [SPEAKER_00]: fear at all.

[00:19:26] [SPEAKER_00]: No fear because I knew

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_00]: casting directors that

[00:19:36] [SPEAKER_00]: they had been meeting.

[00:19:38] [SPEAKER_00]: So I just went like,

[00:19:39] [SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it was easy for me

[00:19:40] [SPEAKER_00]: to be confident because

[00:19:41] [SPEAKER_00]: I was confident I'm not

[00:19:42] [SPEAKER_00]: getting this film.

[00:19:44] [SPEAKER_00]: So I just went in and

[00:19:45] [SPEAKER_00]: I did a really lovely

[00:19:46] [SPEAKER_00]: meeting with him and I

[00:19:47] [SPEAKER_00]: actually funnily enough

[00:19:49] [SPEAKER_00]: it was based on a film

[00:19:50] [SPEAKER_00]: called Warrior.

[00:19:51] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[00:19:52] [SPEAKER_00]: So I kind of watched

[00:19:54] [SPEAKER_00]: the film just two days

[00:19:55] [SPEAKER_00]: before taking the

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_00]: meeting. I never even

[00:19:56] [SPEAKER_00]: watched the film. It

[00:19:57] [SPEAKER_00]: was adapted from that.

[00:19:58] [SPEAKER_00]: Okay.

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_00]: So I went in and I

[00:19:59] [SPEAKER_00]: did a meeting. I had

[00:20:00] [SPEAKER_00]: lovely time meeting him

[00:20:01] [SPEAKER_00]: and I was, it was a

[00:20:02] [SPEAKER_00]: great chat and I told

[00:20:03] [SPEAKER_00]: him a little bit about

[00:20:04] [SPEAKER_00]: my casting and I guess

[00:20:06] [SPEAKER_00]: that somewhere I might,

[00:20:08] [SPEAKER_00]: I was super comfortable

[00:20:09] [SPEAKER_00]: in the meeting because

[00:20:10] [SPEAKER_00]: I was not nervous

[00:20:11] [SPEAKER_00]: because I was going

[00:20:12] [SPEAKER_00]: to Rome.

[00:20:14] [SPEAKER_00]: So I finished the

[00:20:15] [SPEAKER_00]: meeting and I was like,

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_00]: okay great.

[00:20:16] [SPEAKER_00]: I got this opportunity

[00:20:17] [SPEAKER_00]: to go into dharma and

[00:20:18] [SPEAKER_00]: dharma is kind of

[00:20:19] [SPEAKER_00]: always been a very

[00:20:21] [SPEAKER_00]: home-like feeling for me.

[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_00]: It is that even now

[00:20:22] [SPEAKER_00]: I work so closely

[00:20:23] [SPEAKER_00]: with them love everyone

[00:20:25] [SPEAKER_00]: in the team.

[00:20:45] [SPEAKER_00]: some studio and he

[00:20:47] [SPEAKER_00]: was like, what's up?

[00:20:49] [SPEAKER_00]: How's it going?

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_00]: Or whatever.

[00:20:50] [SPEAKER_00]: I was like nothing.

[00:20:51] [SPEAKER_00]: I'm leaving on the

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_00]: data.

[00:20:52] [SPEAKER_00]: I was giving him my

[00:20:53] [SPEAKER_00]: whole plan of where

[00:20:54] [SPEAKER_00]: all I'm going and

[00:20:55] [SPEAKER_00]: he was like,

[00:20:57] [SPEAKER_00]: I said, yeah,

[00:21:37] [SPEAKER_00]: I was leaving for Rome

[00:21:38] [SPEAKER_00]: in the following week.

[00:21:39] [SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, the Rome trip

[00:21:40] [SPEAKER_00]: has got quickly

[00:21:41] [SPEAKER_00]: cancelled obviously.

[00:21:43] [SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, I didn't

[00:21:44] [SPEAKER_00]: end up going and then

[00:21:45] [SPEAKER_00]: like I was just on

[00:21:46] [SPEAKER_00]: board and then I think

[00:21:47] [SPEAKER_00]: that that was like

[00:21:48] [SPEAKER_00]: my real first big

[00:21:50] [SPEAKER_00]: and it was such a

[00:21:51] [SPEAKER_00]: big film to get because

[00:22:00] [SPEAKER_00]: actors who also know

[00:22:02] [SPEAKER_00]: how to do MMA.

[00:22:03] [SPEAKER_00]: It was super random,

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_00]: but anyway,

[00:22:04] [SPEAKER_00]: How did you find those actors?

[00:22:05] [SPEAKER_00]: We did it.

[00:22:06] [SPEAKER_00]: We just did it.
