Bhagirath – Who brought Ganga to earth

King Sagar had sixty thousand one sons. Sagar’s sixty thousand sons dug the entire earth and created an ocean looking for the horse of their father’s Ashwamedh yagya. These sixty thousand sons of Sagar were burnt to ashes by Kapil muni. Sagar’s remaining son Asamanjas had a son Anshuman, who became heir to the throne. In the line of Asamanjas was born Bhagirath. Bhagirath performed severe penance to Brahmadev and Mahadev seeking their help in bringing the divine river Ganga to earth. He eventually succeeded in bringing Ganga to earth and used the divine water to perform last rites of his ancestors who died due to curse of Kapil muni.
