अमेरिकेतील गॉसिपियम हिर्सुटम आणि गॉसिपियम बार्बाडेन्सी या कापसाच्या जातींची जगाला माहिती होईपर्यंत जगात जे सुती कापड वापरले जाई ते भारतातल्या देशी किंवा जरिला कापूस (गॉसिपियम हर्बेशियम) आणि देवकापूस (गॉसिपियम आर्बोरियम) या जातींच्याच सुतापासून बनविले जात असे.
Indian cotton varieties such as Jarila cotton (Gossypium Herbaceum) and Dev Kapus (Gossypium Arboreum) were popular across the world until the rise of American cotton varieties viz. Gossypium Hirsutum and Gossypium Barbadense.
