[00:01:04] Hey everyone, welcome to another Dispatch from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. It's 5.45 a.m., busy day ahead but I really wanted to give you a short report on what happened yesterday. Wednesday was all about some of the most legendary and most important actors in cinema history,
[00:01:35] Meryl Streep and Faye Dannaway. Meryl was last at Cannes 35 years ago and on Tuesday she received the honorary palme d'or and then sat down for about an hour's chat in something they called Rendezvous with Meryl Streep.
[00:01:53] She told us that she was a little hungover from the previous night's excitement but that didn't stop her from telling us a packed house at the theater about her career, challenges that women faced and still face in cinema and much more.
[00:02:11] She talked about how she wrote the last speech in Kramer vs. Kramer. The author of the novel was just not that interested in why her character, the mother, left. He had been much more interested in the father's story so everyone took a stab at writing that
[00:02:29] speech including Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep's one. She also wrote her speech for her character Chaminos the Deer Hunter. When the moderator asked why she's so memorable even in the movies where she has much shorter
[00:02:43] screen time like in Kramer vs. Kramer where she's really only in the end and the beginning and in Deer Hunter her answer was jokingly there was only one woman per movie back then. She also talked about the shampoo scene in Out of Africa where Robert Redford was supposed
[00:03:03] to shampoo her hair but wasn't really feeling it. Her hairdresser stepped in and said look Robert you have to sort of massage it a bit more sensually. This turned out to be in Meryl Streep's word like a sex scene and one of her favorite scenes
[00:03:21] she went on to say quote we've seen so many scenes of people fucking but we don't see that loving touch that care end quote. Are you looking for a podcast where you can learn about the juiciest historical events
[00:03:35] in people but it really feels like you're just gossiping with your girlfriends over a glass of wine or two? Well that's why we created Right Answers Mostly for what you didn't learn in history class but you really wanted to. I'm your host Claire Donald and I'm Tess Belomo.
[00:03:47] Join us every Monday as we dive into the most iconic people and events and get ready to laugh along the way. We cover it all from Titanic to Kris Jenner, Studio 54, Marie Antoinette, even Colton Crime such as Charles Manson and Jones Town every Monday wherever you listen to
[00:04:01] your podcast because history is just gossip. Follow us at Right Answers Mostly for more. Like Chinatown, Bonnie and Clyde, Network and of course the now cult classic Mommy Dearest where she plays Joan Crawford a role she both regrets and would not take back.
[00:04:49] Dennerway talks openly about her bipolar diagnosis and her bouts of depression. She was often called difficult in the industry and the film is really a cautionary tale of how Hollywood has treated and often marginalized strong women. Faye will premiere on HBO later in the year.
[00:05:10] Thanks so much for joining me. Stay tuned for more of these brief little can reports. Subscribe to Pop Culture Confidential wherever you get your podcasts and follow me on Twitter and Instagram at Christina Birrell. See you next time.

[00:05:49] Like the one time this dude was caught in a bathroom with his friend and he was slapping them because that was the only way that he could actually legitimately help them. A mall cop comes in with a taser. Oh yeah, the rest is history.
[00:06:02] It's going to be fun. There is, I don't know, I got like 20 seconds left. So I don't have much more time to tell you another story. But just join me on The R.R. Show. It's from Evergreen Podcasts produced in partnership with Westler Media.
