[00:01:18] welcome to my first 2024 Cannes Dispatch reporting from the 77th edition of the prestigious festival here in France. Now these dispatches will look different every time some are going to be short like this one. There are going to be some conversations and interviews and reviews of the movies

[00:01:39] that are rolling out during the week that I'm here and after. It's a huge festival. Francis Ford Coppola is here with his megalopolis. Furiosa is bound to set the red carpet ablaze. Everyone is talking

[00:01:55] about Alia Bassi's film about the young Trump and his mentor Roy Cohn in the 80s. The film is starring Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump. I'm looking

[00:02:12] forward to hearing the reactions to that one. I'm also looking forward to seeing Ingmar Bergman and Lee Ulman's grandson Halfton Ulman Tundall's film Armand and of course Jorgos Lantimos, Kindness and so much more. Cannes opened yesterday, a rainy day but no shortage of glamour on the red

[00:02:35] carpet as well as French national treasure Messi the dog known from Anatomy of the Fall which won here last year. Are you looking for a podcast where you can learn about the juiciest historical events in people but it really feels like you're just gossiping with your girlfriends over

[00:03:14] to your podcast because history is just gossip. Follow us at Right Answers Mostly for more. Jury President Greta Gerwig walked the red carpet as well as fellow jury members like Lily Gladstone, director Hirokazu Korieda or Marseille to name a few. Now they got some difficult questions during

[00:03:36] their press conference of course there's so much politics and issues in the world and they are circling around the festival as well. They were asked for their perspective on the French Me Too movement on the war in Gaza and how they felt about a movie about Trump

[00:03:54] coming to the festival this year, an election year. The day before Counts Artistic Director Thierry Fermot had sort of set the stage in terms of his thoughts on politics and the festival. He said,

[00:04:08] quote, we are trying to have a festival without these polemics. In can the politics should be on the screen? End quote. We'll see how that goes. Greta Gerwig said yesterday, quote, the very act

[00:04:23] of watching cinema and engaging with it seriously is part of the discussion of what's difficult. End quote. Later yesterday evening, Meryl Streep was awarded an honorary poem during the opening ceremony and was given a very emotional speech by Juliette Benoche. It's been 35

[00:04:44] years since Streep visited Cannes so it's about time. Later today I'm going to be attending the Streep masterclass which I mean that should be the masterclass of masterclasses right? As well as a new documentary about Faye Dunaway where she is supposed to attend so I am

[00:05:04] looking forward to telling you more about that and more about other things in the coming days for these short little dispatches. Thank you so much for joining me please subscribe to Pop Culture Confidential wherever you get your podcasts and subscribe to me on social media
