[00:00:00] Hey everybody, it's Chris. If you're a sports fan like me or you're just a fan of a great story
[00:00:05] you gotta check out Pressbox Access, a sports history podcast hosted by Todd Jones.
[00:00:11] Todd sits down with fellow sports writers who experienced first-hand some of the biggest sports moments of the past 50 years
[00:00:17] and they share some of the stories behind the stories, some of which they've only told to each other.
[00:00:23] What I personally love are the wild stories that you might not hear so much about on Sports Center over the years.
[00:00:28] Like when Indiana-based sports journalist Bob Kravitz recounts the time Bobby Knight showed up make it to an office meeting with him
[00:00:34] and then banned him from the Hoosiers locker room for the next three years because Bob wrote a story he didn't like.
[00:00:39] Or when Alexander Wolf tells a story about going out on the town in Chicago with Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra in the middle of a Bull's Playoff series.
[00:00:46] Or, when Dan Wetzel talks about what it was like to be in the media room, when Temple Basketball coach John Cheney stormed into UMass coach John Calapari's press conference after a game and threatened to kill him.
[00:00:57] These wild and fun stories paired with stories about real sports greatness, you know, like the 1970 Steelers being the greatest NFL dynasty ever.
[00:01:06] Or the legendary rivalry between Larry Bird, Magic Johnson. And even the impact of protests for social justice issues in sports make press box access a show you should check out.
[00:01:16] Press box access is part of the Evergreen Podcast family and it's available all the places you get your pods and you can also find press box access on YouTube. Go check it out!

[00:02:28] Chris, we are going to do something exciting every Friday on the feed for the month of March.
[00:02:34] We are doing a singles from 1994 March Madness dress.
[00:02:41] So how this is going to work is that each Monday there will be a survey monkey link dropped in our Facebook page and on our Instagram.
[00:02:51] And you'll have until that Thursday afternoon to get your votes in.
[00:02:57] I'll tally all the votes on Thursday and then on Fridays, Chris and I will record a quick update on where the current standings are on this March Madness bracket.
[00:03:08] So the way that this worked we're doing a 32 song draft I pulled up 46 songs that were hit singles released in the year 1994.
[00:03:20] But set it to Chris Chris narrate it down to the 32 and I tried my best to put them in specific category brackets.
[00:03:28] We had a little bit more rock music than certain other categories so we got a little bit messy and a few of them but that's fine.
[00:03:34] We'll still survive this just understand that they're not perfect here.
[00:03:38] So the first quadrant we're going with is 1994 rock music.
[00:03:44] Okay. All right. So our first match up by the way, the matchups were just a random number generator when I figured out these brackets.
[00:03:50] Okay. So our first matchup to heavy hitters Chris we've got nine inch nails closer versus green day basket.
[00:03:58] Oh my god. That that could have been the finals.
[00:04:02] Yeah. Oh boy.
[00:04:05] Who do I think is going to win? Is that the question?
[00:04:08] I think it might go to green day but I think it's going to be a close fight. I think this is going to be a tight.
[00:04:13] Anybody's game here. Yeah, I think our audience is going to vote for green day.
[00:04:19] But okay.
[00:04:21] Geez. I wouldn't even I'd be so hard for me. I would probably lean closer but yeah, I think our audience is going to vote for green day.
[00:04:29] Our next match up in that category is offspring self esteem versus Nirvana's about a girl unplugged performance.
[00:04:37] Oh, that's another one Mike. If it was any other Nirvana song.
[00:04:42] Yeah.
[00:04:43] I could see Nirvana just easily taking this but I could maybe see our audience leaning offspring on this.
[00:04:51] I hope I'm wrong. I hope I think I kind of won about a girl to win this one.
[00:04:55] Me too.
[00:04:56] But I wouldn't be mad. I mean, I really do like the song self esteem by the offspring. It's a good song.
[00:05:01] But I think about a girl, especially that unplugged version of about a girl is just perfect.
[00:05:08] It's not as good as the puddle of mud cover of it obviously.
[00:05:14] All right. So here's here's a match up where I know what I think will win and it doesn't necessarily match what I think should win.
[00:05:24] We got Soundgarden black hole son versus the cranberry zombie.
[00:05:29] Black hole son's going to win.
[00:05:31] I know, but it shouldn't.
[00:05:33] Yeah.
[00:05:34] I just know.
[00:05:35] I just know.
[00:05:36] And here's another one where I kind of know what's going to win. But I think that people should not going to tell anyone how to vote.
[00:05:42] But really, really listen to both of these songs and give it give the other one a fight and chance here is weaser buddy Holly versus Stone Temple pilots interstate love song.
[00:05:51] That's actually a really hard one.
[00:05:53] Yeah.
[00:05:55] I think that our audience is going to lean weaser, but interstate love song is such a good song.
[00:06:02] It's a really good song.
[00:06:04] Oh, it's a really, really good song.
[00:06:07] So again, as we move to the second quadrant, I must repeat that we had a little bit more rock songs so they had to kind of find their way into other songs.
[00:06:16] So they were going to tentatively call this rap and other options.
[00:06:21] Okay.
[00:06:22] So the first match up is the Beastie boys sabotage versus Wu Tang clan cream.
[00:06:30] I kind of hope sabotage wins here just cream isn't my favorite Wu Tang song now sabotage is like a classic.
[00:06:40] Yes. Okay, so here's oh man, I didn't even realize this happened until till right now.
[00:06:45] This is cousin versus cousin.
[00:06:47] Oh wow.
[00:06:48] Snoop doggy dog gin and juice versus Warren G and Nate dogs regulate in my heart of hearts it should be regularly.
[00:06:56] Yeah, that is regulates the better song.
[00:06:59] Now here's where it gets a little weird.
[00:07:03] Dittorious B.I.G's juicy is up against that beloved rap song Oasis liver.
[00:07:10] Just please, please vote juicy here.
[00:07:15] I mean the songs okay but juicy such juicy is one of the best rap songs ever.
[00:07:20] Exactly.
[00:07:21] And then the next one this one at least is more rapish than Oasis and I actually kind of want the alternative song to win this one.
[00:07:30] Coolio fantastic voyage versus Beck loser.
[00:07:35] Yeah, I mean I obviously like Beck loser way better.
[00:07:39] I think maybe Beck loser has really has stood the test of time a little better.
[00:07:44] Yeah, I agree. I agree.
[00:07:46] Now the next category that we're entering into for the third quadrant is I'm calling songs from albums released in 1993.
[00:07:57] So the way that we did this was based on when the single was released.
[00:08:01] So a lot of the songs from 1994 single wise were from albums from the previous year.
[00:08:06] So quadrant number one, we've got Varukasal Seither versus counting Kroes Mr. Jones.
[00:08:12] Oh please Mr. Jones you gotta go Mr. Jones everybody.
[00:08:16] Here's one that I think could have been of finals round matchup that were getting very early on.
[00:08:24] But Lisa Loeb stay I miss you versus Mazze star fade into you.
[00:08:30] Oh, that's a really hard one.
[00:08:34] That's anyone's game right there.
[00:08:36] I might lean.
[00:08:37] I know that we've sung a lot of praise on Mazze star but I think I'm leaning Lisa Loeb on this one.
[00:08:42] Oh, that song that it turned the radio on.
[00:08:45] I turn the radio up in this woman was singing my song like yeah.
[00:08:49] That's all I can sing that song from the first line to the last line like nonstop.
[00:08:55] It's so good.
[00:08:56] I could see our listeners leaning Lisa Loeb.
[00:08:59] I think so too.
[00:09:01] All right next matchup we got the crash test dummies versus show Kroes all I want to do.
[00:09:09] Well, I hope it goes to crash test dummies.
[00:09:13] I said it before I'll say it again.
[00:09:16] That's my girlfriend Marquit's birthday song where when you bring the cake out do you know about this?
[00:09:21] Have I talked to this before?
[00:09:23] No, this was even before we were dating.
[00:09:25] This is something that happened but then we had a birthday party for a birthday cake out and everyone sings Marquit Marquit.
[00:09:34] Which is so much better than happy birthday.
[00:09:38] That's it.
[00:09:39] I'm setting my calendar next year.
[00:09:41] I'm coming to Marquit's party just to be a part of that.
[00:09:44] And then the final matchup.
[00:09:46] Here's another one where I definitely I think our listeners will do us right on this one.
[00:09:51] Tom Petty in the heartbreakers Mary Jane's last dance against collective souls shine.
[00:09:58] Oh, I'm leaning towards Tom Petty on this one.
[00:10:02] I love that song.
[00:10:04] Yeah.
[00:10:05] But it doesn't have that.
[00:10:07] It's a new up in the end of town and a good old mama never was around.
[00:10:12] Yeah, also scary video, just a scary video.
[00:10:15] Yeah, probably lean Tom Petty on that one but I will say that Tom Petty song doesn't have.
[00:10:19] No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
[00:10:22] Yeah?
[00:10:23] Yeah.
[00:10:24] All right, then the last category again we had an overflux of rock music here.
[00:10:29] I'm calling pop plus a rocks off.
[00:10:34] in the final quadrant of pop versus a lot of rock song.
[00:10:39] Hopefully this goes the way Chris wants it to.
[00:10:42] It's the battle of one of his favorites
[00:10:43] versus one of his least favorites.
[00:10:45] We have live I alone up against Janet Jackson's
[00:10:50] anytime any place.
[00:10:51] Oh, I'm so scared.
[00:10:53] I'm so scared.
[00:10:54] Oh man, anytime any place is my favorite
[00:10:58] Janet Jackson song up against I alone.
[00:11:04] Fear is not the end of this Chris.
[00:11:07] The next match up, if I could wish for a song
[00:11:13] to beat another song,
[00:11:15] I'm putting all of that wish on this one.
[00:11:17] It's Enigma's return to innocence
[00:11:20] against Mariah Carey's all I want for Christmas is you.
[00:11:25] Geez, I, hey have those two songs ever been matched
[00:11:29] up against each other in any sort of decision?
[00:11:32] What so ever?
[00:11:33] They're not a chance, but man that
[00:11:36] hey, oh, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
[00:11:40] Do it for the pure moods guys,
[00:11:41] I don't it doesn't need to move to the round after this,
[00:11:44] but I really want that to take out all I want for Christmas is you.
[00:11:48] Hopefully we'll have the benefit of it being March
[00:11:50] and people not being in a mood
[00:11:52] for the Christmas song to move forward.
[00:11:54] The next round is the pretenders I'll stand by you
[00:12:00] against Ace of Bases the Sign.
[00:12:04] I mean, I hope people go pretenders actually
[00:12:06] because I don't have the sign.
[00:12:08] I was burned out on the sign in the 90s
[00:12:10] and I'm still burnt out on the sign.
[00:12:12] Yeah, I mean, but that that pretender song is great.
[00:12:15] Yeah, that is a great ballad
[00:12:17] and then we got the matchup,
[00:12:20] possibly the matchup of this entire quadruple.
[00:12:22] Whoa.
[00:12:24] And it's the last matchup for this March,
[00:12:26] Man and this bonus episode TLC creep
[00:12:29] against boys to men I'll make love to you.
[00:12:34] Um, ah, it's like not my favorite song from either artist.
[00:12:42] Yeah, I mean, listen,
[00:12:44] I would rather it be Waterfalls than creep,
[00:12:47] but I think Waterfalls was a 1995 later
[00:12:49] in that album cycle release.
[00:12:51] Yeah, so next year's March Madness Waterfalls
[00:12:53] will be in contention for sure,
[00:12:55] but I like creep though that sexy trumpet
[00:12:57] that I like creep.
[00:13:00] I actually like red light special the most by then
[00:13:03] I know you do.
[00:13:04] You fucking love red light special.
[00:13:06] Yeah, you bring it up anytime TLC comes up sexy sound.
[00:13:09] Ah, and I like unpretty by them too.
[00:13:14] I think that's one pretty underrated song.
[00:13:17] That song is great.
[00:13:18] Yeah, really.
[00:13:19] I hope people go boys to man on this one.
[00:13:22] All right, all right.
[00:13:23] Well, we're gonna put up the is gonna be a survey monkey link.
[00:13:26] Click it, make some votes,
[00:13:28] make some things happen in Chris.
[00:13:29] I want to pitch this to you because obviously
[00:13:32] when we record this next episode,
[00:13:35] it's gonna be in the middle of this punchline tour.
[00:13:38] I could bring the zoom to the show on Thursday
[00:13:42] and we could get some color commentary
[00:13:44] from other members of the band.
[00:13:46] Sure.
[00:13:47] It's giving in there two cents.
[00:13:50] Almost, you know, like we're doing an actual sports thing
[00:13:53] where it's like let's bring in some of the experts.
[00:13:54] What do you guys think about this most recent matchup?
[00:13:58] Sure.
[00:13:59] I think that's a great idea.
[00:14:00] And Matt also I would suggest maybe
[00:14:03] maybe some of our listeners don't have Facebook
[00:14:05] or Instagram or whatever.
[00:14:07] Can you put the survey monkey link
[00:14:08] and then show notes as well?
[00:14:10] I could probably make that happen.
[00:14:12] In fact, that is what I'm going to do.
[00:14:14] That's a good call.
[00:14:15] In the show notes will also be the survey monkey link.
[00:14:18] And Chris since I mentioned it
[00:14:20] and this episode's coming out this Friday or Saturday,
[00:14:24] if people wanted to check out punchline
[00:14:26] and they happened to live on the East Coast
[00:14:29] maybe specifically in the New York Pennsylvania,
[00:14:31] New Jersey or Maryland area.
[00:14:34] Where can they go to see those show dates
[00:14:36] and get some tickets?
[00:14:37] Yeah, if you live in New York City, New Jersey,
[00:14:41] Baltimore or around Pittsburgh
[00:14:44] we're playing at the Grammar Sea in New York on Wednesday,
[00:14:47] March, what day is that?
[00:14:49] March 6th, 2024.

[00:14:57] three seven of 2024.

[00:15:21] which is a suburb of Pittsburgh,
[00:15:22] probably less than half an hour from Pittsburgh.
[00:15:26] Nice.
[00:15:27] And where can people get tickets if they're interested
[00:15:28] in any of those shows?
[00:15:29] The venues or is there a website?
[00:15:31] You can go to punchlion.com and go to shows
[00:15:35] and there's ticket links in there.
[00:15:37] Perfect.
[00:15:38] All right, well guys, we'll be back on Wednesday
[00:15:39] with a normal, actually I'm very excited
[00:15:42] for this Wednesday's episode.
