[00:00:00] Hey everybody, it's Chris. If you're a sports fan like me or you're just a fan of a great story,
[00:00:05] you gotta check out Pressbox Access, a sports history podcast hosted by Todd Jones.
[00:00:11] Todd sits down with fellow sports writers who experienced first-hand some of the biggest sports moments of the past 50 years
[00:00:17] and they share some of the stories behind the stories, some of which they've only told to each other.
[00:00:23] What I personally love are the wild stories that you might not hear so much about on Sports Center over the years.
[00:00:28] Like when Indiana-based sports journalist Bob Kravitz recounts the time Bobby Knight showed up making it to an office meeting with him,
[00:00:34] and then banned him from the Hoosier's locker room for the next three years because Bob wrote a story he didn't like.
[00:00:39] Or when Alexander Wolf tells a story about going out on the town in Chicago with Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra in the middle of a Bull's Playoff series.
[00:00:46] Or when Dan Wetzel talks about what it was like to be in the media room, when Temple Basketball coach John Cheney stormed into U-Mass coach John Calipari's press conference after a game and threatened to kill him.
[00:00:57] These wild and fun stories paired with stories about real sports greatness, you know, like the 1970 Steelers being the greatest NFL dynasty ever.
[00:01:06] Or the legendary rivalry between Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and even the impact of protests for social justice issues in sports make press box access a show you should check out.
[00:01:16] Press box access is part of the Evergreen Podcast family and it's available all the places you get your pods and you can also find press box access on YouTube.
[00:01:24] Go check it out!
[00:01:27] Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are the greatest but let me play devil's advocate here. Let's see so no that's a good thing.
[00:01:34] That's definitely not a problem.
[00:01:37] Reese's you did it! You stumped this charming devil!
[00:01:42] Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are the greatest but let me play devil's advocate here. Let's see so no that's a good thing.
[00:01:50] That's definitely not a problem. Reese's you did it! You stumped this charming devil!
[00:01:57] Chris, we are back with another March Madness episode and it is the final four is about to become the finals.
[00:02:05] The championship.
[00:02:08] So if we did this the way we've been doing it the past week, this would be like a three minute episode.
[00:02:14] So I think what I want to do is look at all the competitors one at a time before I give the results.
[00:02:21] So first up we got the matchup of Green Day, Basket Case versus the Beastie Boy sabotage.
[00:02:27] Let's hear some pros and cons for both over there.
[00:02:31] I mean we kind of said this last week. I think we agreed on this that the Beastie Boy sabotage is a little more raw of a song but
[00:02:43] Basket Case is kind of the song that...
[00:02:49] Well, could you argue that Basket Case might be the most important punk song of all time just for like what it did for the next 30 years that came after it?
[00:03:00] I guess it was the one right at that time. There were like long view was first but I don't think long view was the hit that Basket Case right?
[00:03:09] So when I come around was after Basket Case.
[00:03:12] When I come around was the last single off tooki?
[00:03:16] Yeah, I mean what I would probably say is that Basket Case is maybe a more important song in the grand scheme of things like for Green Day and for like punk music in the mainstream.
[00:03:35] But I think that the Beastie Boy is sabotage. I don't know if it's even the most important song in the Beastie Boy catalog probably not.
[00:03:42] No, I would... I think what I would say on the pro side if we're talking about a song representing a band's career in catalog.
[00:03:51] I think Basket Case is a good representation of what Green Day's overall sound is.
[00:03:58] I don't think sabotage is a good representation of what the Beastie Boy's overall sound is. It's way more of an outlier of their genre.
[00:04:07] Yeah, definitely. I was on the fence. I voted for Green Day even though I was like...
[00:04:14] Man, it'd be pretty cool if the Beastie Boy's won here. But I just couldn't... I couldn't click for the Beasties on this one man.
[00:04:22] I don't know.
[00:04:23] All right, well neither could most of our audience. But it was not a landslide here.
[00:04:28] We had a hundred votes on this particular bracket. Green Day, Basket Case, 56% of the vote.
[00:04:36] 44% of the vote going to Beastie Boy's sabotage. So it was close. There was times... Chris, I checked this every morning.
[00:04:44] I would say we released this on Friday up until Tuesday. Every time I checked, it was either 50% to 50% or 51% to 49%.
[00:04:56] It was only towards the Wednesday bracket where it started to have a little bit more separation.
[00:05:04] It was anybody's game until this moment. So Basket Case is going forward into the finals.
[00:05:12] Pasa, I'm assuming still your number one seed.
[00:05:15] Yeah, I think my odds were pretty spot on because the Beastie Boy's did give them a run.
[00:05:20] I knew that their odds couldn't be as long as they were before when I saw that Green Day didn't win by as much as I thought they would the last round.
[00:05:31] And the fact that the Beastie Boy's just dominated in that round. So, yeah, I got to see who they're up against.
[00:05:38] I can take a guess of who they're going to be up against and then try to figure out the odds here.
[00:05:44] Yeah, I mean, this is what I thought. No, I didn't think it was going to be a landslide. This is about right.
[00:05:49] I would have guessed somewhere in this range is what they would have won by.
[00:05:53] Alright, and then our second match up was counting Kroes, Mr. Jones versus Ace of Base the Sign.
[00:06:00] Now, in the comment section of the One Hit Thunder Facebook page...
[00:06:07] And I think even on the Christa makes Facebook page when you share this, a lot of love still coming for Ace of Base.
[00:06:14] A lot of people calling Ace of Base the team that's going to win the whole thing.
[00:06:19] I didn't see it at all.
[00:06:22] I mean, obviously, I've gone on record saying it a lot of times that August and everything after is my favorite album ever front the back.
[00:06:30] I'm not saying Mr. Jones is even my favorite song on the album, but Mr. Jones is the song.
[00:06:35] I mean, it's the most... It's easily their most known track.
[00:06:40] Yeah.
[00:06:42] It's kind of one of the only two true pop songs on August and everything.
[00:06:49] But yeah, I agree with you. It's not the best track.
[00:06:53] I'm a big fan of a murder of one. I'm a big fan of round here.
[00:06:58] And there's a lot of great songs in there, but I mean Mr. Jones is this...
[00:07:06] It just lives in your brain all day long, but you could say the same about Ace of Base.
[00:07:14] The amount of times that I have in my life made a reference where someone has said something about seeing a sign or that when they're going to break up, they saw the signs and I immediately chime in with did it open up your eyes.
[00:07:31] It's like...
[00:07:32] It's one of those catchy courses. And I believe when we did the episode in the green room at Asbury Park, Paul and Corey both chimed in that
[00:07:42] when they tried to cover this song...
[00:07:44] Yeah, we tried to do it in punchline.
[00:07:46] We tried to do a punchline.
[00:07:47] That it was a lot harder than they anticipated just on translating that from what it was to like a good rock song.
[00:07:57] Yeah, there's not a real clear cut way to do this in a way that's not the way Ace of Base did it.
[00:08:04] There's no...
[00:08:05] It doesn't translate to rock very well.
[00:08:07] I mean, we almost... I think we for a second tried it like reggae and then we were like, no this is lame.
[00:08:13] We can't do this, this is stupid.
[00:08:15] Do you think...
[00:08:16] Let me ask you this question.
[00:08:18] Do you think that Ace of Base would still be this far if we picked one of the other two signals that they released in 1994 which was all that she wants and don't turn around?
[00:08:28] No.
[00:08:29] Or do you think it's specifically this song?
[00:08:30] This is the song that people are fighting for.
[00:08:32] This is the song.
[00:08:34] Yeah, they're not going to be taking all that she wants is another baby song this far.
[00:08:40] No, don't turn around.
[00:08:42] No way.
[00:08:43] This is the one.
[00:08:44] This is both of these groups.
[00:08:47] This is the song.
[00:08:49] You know, they both have...
[00:08:50] Yeah.
[00:08:51] Kind of grows has a lot more hits than Ace of Base does just a longer career of hits but this is both their most defining songs.
[00:09:00] Yeah.
[00:09:01] I mean, I would argue that if people haven't really dove into the counting crows cataloged, they're missing out because I think that their first four albums is a pretty solid run of records.
[00:09:10] Oh yeah.
[00:09:11] August and everything, recovering the satellites, this desert life and...
[00:09:15] Yeah.
[00:09:16] Mark Candy.
[00:09:17] I got them blanking hard candy.
[00:09:18] Those four albums are all pretty...
[00:09:21] There's very few skips on those four albums for me.
[00:09:25] Those are really good well thought out records.
[00:09:29] And Ace of Base, I mean Ace of Base, I do think that all that she wants is a good song.
[00:09:33] I think don't turn around as a good song but it's not the side.
[00:09:37] And all they really had was their follow up album had their cover of Cruel Summer and beautiful life and then they kind of vanished.
[00:09:46] How do you think this played out, Chris?
[00:09:48] Because like I said, there was a lot of chatter that people thought Ace of Base was going on.
[00:09:51] Oh man, I got it in my heart of hearts.
[00:09:55] I got to believe that counting crows ran away with this one.
[00:09:58] There's just so much more heart and emotion in counting crows.
[00:10:02] I could see some people being annoyed by Adam Duritz' voice.
[00:10:07] I think I've seen that before, not in the circles I run in.
[00:10:10] We all love the guy but I could see that being a complaint.
[00:10:15] But no, I got to think that counting crows took this by at least like 66%.
[00:10:21] I think two thirds of the votes had to go to counting crows.
[00:10:24] Chris, that is incredible because it literally was 66% for counting crows.
[00:10:29] Mr. Jones.
[00:10:30] Man, I'm good.
[00:10:31] 66% to Ace of Base is 34%.
[00:10:34] So, I mean, we got to talk about this the final matchup.
[00:10:38] Green Day Basket case versus counting crows, Mr. Jones.
[00:10:42] And I can kind of see two different ways that this goes man.
[00:10:47] I can see this being, you know, green day just takes the win or
[00:10:53] or this could be one of those situations where people love both songs
[00:11:00] and they go into vote and they assume that a lot of people are going to vote for green day.
[00:11:05] So, they throw their votes onto counting crows and almost hit the scale through that
[00:11:11] or that these, I mean, counting crows has won three or four matchups now
[00:11:16] with a very wide margin, a wider margin than any of the green day wins.
[00:11:21] So, maybe counting crows just takes it.
[00:11:24] Well, I got to tell you right now I've been thinking about the odds and...
[00:11:27] Yeah, I was going to ask you that next.
[00:11:30] If I had 100 bucks, what am I looking at here?
[00:11:32] You're looking at green day at minus 130.
[00:11:35] You got about 130 to win 100 counting crows at plus 110.
[00:11:39] So, it's pretty close.
[00:11:41] 100 wins to 110 or you got to put up 130 to win 100 on green day.
[00:11:46] And I got to tell you, I'm going to show my cards right now.
[00:11:50] I'm voting for counting crows in the finals.
[00:11:53] I think I might do the same, honestly.
[00:11:56] As much as I love, I mean green day is legitimately in my top five favorite bands of all time.
[00:12:03] But...
[00:12:05] I don't know, I kind of want it to be counting crows.
[00:12:08] But again, it's not up to us.
[00:12:10] Our votes, we put two votes in this bucket and the audience controls the rest of it.
[00:12:15] So, I am really excited to see what happens.
[00:12:18] Chris, until this morning didn't know what we were going to talk about after this.
[00:12:25] Because we don't really have anything to promote on either side.
[00:12:29] And then I woke up to about a million different posts of an unexpected cover song that happened last night.
[00:12:35] Oh man, my phone started blowing up all at the same time last night when we were recording this.
[00:12:45] I should have went to that concert, I guess.
[00:12:48] But you know, they could have picked up the phone or sent me an email or something that invited me.
[00:12:55] Like, okay, what we're referring to is last night Fallout Boy played Pittsburgh at the PPG Arena and covered punchline heart transplant.
[00:13:04] Well Patrick did on piano.
[00:13:06] I got tons of videos and you know, tons of whatever.
[00:13:10] Like we posted the video of it on our socials and it's like so many comments and reshairs and likes and whatever.
[00:13:19] Yeah, I mean, that was pretty unexpected.
[00:13:22] It's like...
[00:13:24] It's so crazy and funny because it's like, I'm a talk to those dudes in forever.
[00:13:29] And you know, I don't know.
[00:13:33] It's awesome. It's great.
[00:13:35] And I thought one of the funniest and coolest parts of it is there's so many videos that people tag us in.
[00:13:45] And pretty much every single one of them, Patrick's at the piano and he's talking.
[00:13:50] And he starts like insinuating, like, hey, we used to play with this band.
[00:13:55] And so many of them, you hear somebody who's filming going, oh my god, is he gonna...
[00:13:59] Is he talking about punchline?
[00:14:01] And then he says it and then the people scream and you know, some of them people are singing along itself.
[00:14:06] But yeah, it's pretty wild. What did you think of that?
[00:14:10] I mean, I think my honest opinion was just like thinking about you and the friendship that I've built with you over the last four or five years.
[00:14:19] And knowing that the topic of Fallout Boy is kind of a bittersweet one sometimes, just because it's like...
[00:14:27] It's hard to not think of them being the band that has the career that you had hoped you were gonna have.
[00:14:33] So to have this moment out of nowhere that kind of is a reminder that like...
[00:14:40] At a minimum, Patrick stump still remembers and thanks fondly of you guys.
[00:14:46] Like that has to... That has to feel good.
[00:14:49] I think it's very cool, it's very nice and hey, we got a bunch of action shows coming up and a dude from one of the biggest bands just covered...
[00:14:57] Like that video could have...
[00:14:59] Covered the biggest song at...
[00:15:01] Like that's awesome.
[00:15:02] Yeah, that's pretty cool.
[00:15:04] Yep.
[00:15:05] Alright, well Chris, we'll be back next Friday with the results of the finals.
[00:15:11] And maybe... Let me pitch this to you.
[00:15:14] Maybe before we give the results next Friday, we do like a mini version of One Hit Thunder for both songs.
[00:15:23] You know what I mean?
[00:15:24] Like do the same level of research we would do for One Hit Wonder just on those two songs and do like two like ten, fifteen minute episodes of One Hit Thunder combined into a thirty minute spectacular before we reveal the results.
[00:15:39] What do you think? I think that could be fun.
[00:15:40] I love that. I mean, not...
[00:15:42] I don't think people really need to know the history of both bands but the history of the songs.
[00:15:47] Anything we could find out about the specific songs that people might not know, I think that would be fun.
[00:15:53] So let's do that.
[00:15:54] Alright, cool.
[00:15:55] That's the plan then and we'll be back on Wednesday with just a regular episode of One Hit Thunder.
