[00:00:00] And the Oscar goes to...
[00:00:02] Thank you so much!
[00:00:03] This might be the one time I'm speaking.
[00:00:05] This is not a joke.
[00:00:06] Moonlight is one best picture.
[00:00:07] Could you double check the envelope?
[00:00:09] And I can't deny the fact that you like me.
[00:00:12] Thank you, life. Thank you, love.
[00:00:14] You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell
[00:00:17] and that's really embarrassing, but thank you.
[00:00:19] This is nuts. It's a tie.
[00:00:21] I'm the king of the world!
[00:00:23] And the Oscar goes to...
[00:00:25] And the Oscar goes to...
[00:00:26] And the Oscar goes to...
[00:00:27] Gentlemen, my only object in the year here is to try and get at me.
[00:00:31] I wish I could watch like this.
[00:00:33] You're looking at your kids right where I am.
[00:00:35] I could have been somebody.
[00:00:39] They can only kill me with a golden bullet.
[00:00:41] What have I done?
[00:00:42] Call me Mr. Tips.
[00:00:44] I'm gonna make them an awfully good.
[00:00:45] The census taker wants to try to test me.
[00:00:48] I ate his liver with some father meat for a nice year.
[00:00:53] Don't laugh!
[00:00:54] Can't stop watching them.
[00:00:56] This ain't reality TV!
[00:00:57] I'm not falling into despair!
[00:00:59] You hate bloggers. You mock Twitter.
[00:01:01] It's time, Robbie. It's fast!
[00:01:03] Welcome to the Next Best Picture podcast.
[00:01:07] And Maria is the Oppenheimer.
[00:01:12] Welcome to episode 392 of the Next Best Picture podcast.
[00:01:18] I am your host Matt Necklia.
[00:01:19] The time recording is 10.05 a.m.
[00:01:21] On May 12th, 2024, here to join me today for this episode,
[00:01:26] I have Dan Baer,
[00:01:28] Happy Mother's Day,
[00:01:30] and Giovanni Lago.
[00:01:32] Hello.
[00:01:33] And yes, I echo what Dan said.
[00:01:35] A very happy Mother's Day.
[00:01:37] Indeed, Mom, if you're listening,
[00:01:39] love you to pieces.
[00:01:40] And for all the moms out there that listen to us,
[00:01:43] thank you.
[00:01:44] We see you and we appreciate you.
[00:01:46] I think we all, to some degree or another,
[00:01:49] you know, whether it's showing us a movie at home
[00:01:52] as we're a kid or taking us to the movie,
[00:01:54] I'm sure you guys have your own story to tell
[00:01:57] about Mom pulling you out of school
[00:01:59] to take you to see something,
[00:02:01] because it was easy to take you during the day
[00:02:03] when less people were there than take you
[00:02:05] on a Friday or Saturday night.
[00:02:07] But either way, in any case,
[00:02:09] we love and appreciate our moms.
[00:02:12] So with that out of the way here,
[00:02:14] guys, I'm hopping on a flight
[00:02:16] in a few hours and going to Cannes.
[00:02:18] So nuts.
[00:02:19] Holy shit, Hallie.
[00:02:20] Yeah.
[00:02:21] Yeah.
[00:02:22] I'm so excited.
[00:02:23] The nuts part is that I'm actually recording this,
[00:02:25] going to try and edit it before I leave.
[00:02:27] And I'm still not fully packed.
[00:02:29] Yeah.
[00:02:30] That is the nuts part.
[00:02:31] Like Matt Magli a certified madman.
[00:02:33] Okay.
[00:02:34] Truly.
[00:02:35] Oh, God.
[00:02:36] Absolutely is mad Matt.
[00:02:38] Yeah, mad Matt.
[00:02:40] Again, like you kind of wait so long at the airport
[00:02:43] before an international flight anyway.
[00:02:45] I'm sure you'll have plenty of time.
[00:02:47] I hope so.
[00:02:48] I do hope so.
[00:02:51] Anyway,
[00:02:54] we have a couple of things to talk about for this week's show.
[00:02:57] We're going to talk about a lot of trailers
[00:03:00] that dropped this week,
[00:03:02] mostly for smaller films because
[00:03:04] with Cannes approaching,
[00:03:06] I thought it would be appropriate to
[00:03:08] talk about a sense of discovery.
[00:03:10] We're about to discover through this
[00:03:12] major international film festival,
[00:03:14] some of the year's best films,
[00:03:16] movies that will undoubtedly be a part
[00:03:18] of the Oscar conversation,
[00:03:20] whether that's an international feature,
[00:03:22] director, animated film,
[00:03:24] picture.
[00:03:25] Who knows.
[00:03:26] But then there's all these other films too,
[00:03:28] some of which are going to Cannes,
[00:03:30] some that have already been to other film festivals,
[00:03:33] and some that are going straight to theaters that,
[00:03:36] you know, I really do think that these movies
[00:03:38] deserve everyone's support to some degree or another.
[00:03:41] So that's going to be the theme of this week's episode
[00:03:44] is just talking about movies that,
[00:03:46] you know, give you that sense of discovery,
[00:03:49] that sense of excitement.
[00:03:51] And before we get to any of that though,
[00:03:53] including your fan questions going over the polls,
[00:03:55] etc., etc.,
[00:03:56] I do want to just touch upon what everyone
[00:03:58] saw this past week.
[00:03:59] So Dan, why don't we start off with you?
[00:04:01] What was your week like?
[00:04:03] So my week was actually
[00:04:05] rather light on the movie front.
[00:04:07] I just had a few rewatches of things,
[00:04:11] mostly things that I quite enjoyed,
[00:04:15] most notably a rewatch of I Saw the TV Glow,
[00:04:18] which is just spectacular,
[00:04:20] probably my favorite film of the year so far.
[00:04:23] And other than that,
[00:04:25] it's mostly been getting caught up on TV stuff,
[00:04:28] which if y'all have not been watching Palm Royale,
[00:04:33] the finale that just dropped,
[00:04:34] I think last week is so good.
[00:04:38] Christian Week has been fantastic all season,
[00:04:41] but there is one scene in the finale
[00:04:43] that is a goddamn tour de force.
[00:04:47] Like when I say she ate,
[00:04:49] she devoured the scenery.
[00:04:53] It's the best work of her career.
[00:04:56] Yeah, I'm really excited to check that one out.
[00:04:58] That's a show that's on my list at the moment,
[00:05:00] along with Under the Bridge as two that I need to
[00:05:03] still catch up on before the end of the month.
[00:05:06] Obviously for those that don't know this,
[00:05:08] we do talk about television from time to time
[00:05:10] on our sister podcast, the next best series podcast.
[00:05:13] And we drop those every three weeks.
[00:05:15] So if you want to hear us talk more about the television landscape,
[00:05:18] by all means, I highly recommend that you listen to those episodes.
[00:05:21] There's a lot of really exciting television out there right now.
[00:05:24] Giovanni Lago, what about you?
[00:05:27] I'm just going to go through everything real quick because there's a lot.
[00:05:30] Like Dan, I also saw the TV Glow.
[00:05:32] It was my first time watching it.
[00:05:34] I had no idea what this movie was about.
[00:05:36] Like I avoided everything.
[00:05:38] I just heard you guys all be like, this is amazing from Sundance.
[00:05:41] I was like, okay, I'm going in blind.
[00:05:43] And I wish I knew just how utterly devastating this movie was.
[00:05:47] And it's so painful to watch.
[00:05:50] It's so beautiful.
[00:05:51] And Justice Smith is unreal and Brigitte Lindy Payne.
[00:05:54] They are amazing.
[00:05:56] Probably one of the best films of the year.
[00:05:58] I agree with Dan.
[00:05:59] I love it.
[00:06:00] Go to your local theater and see it.
[00:06:02] Like it's a must watch.
[00:06:03] I also saw Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,
[00:06:06] which I thought was good.
[00:06:08] I wasn't in love with it.
[00:06:10] I think it very much embraces the whole universe of Matt Reeves trilogy,
[00:06:14] but also lives in that shadow.
[00:06:17] I found the side characters a bit more fascinating than the main characters.
[00:06:22] But on a visual scale, I think, you know,
[00:06:24] the set pieces were fantastic and the VFX works great.
[00:06:27] There's just one shot where Noah's looking to a telescope that I'm just like,
[00:06:31] this is pretty scary how great this looks.
[00:06:34] But it's a good watch.
[00:06:36] Another good watch I had was I watched Go because this whole
[00:06:40] program on the criteria channel.
[00:06:43] So I was just breezing through it.
[00:06:45] Yeah, Doug Lyman used to make good movies, man.
[00:06:48] What happened?
[00:06:49] Go is so much fun.
[00:06:50] Go is so good.
[00:06:52] It's so great.
[00:06:53] Timothy Oliphant has just always been that lean.
[00:06:56] That's funny.
[00:06:57] Sarah Pauley is so good.
[00:06:59] Like it's just one of me like famous people are still in like
[00:07:02] like Melissa McCarthy's in it.
[00:07:03] Melissa McCarthy.
[00:07:05] So good.
[00:07:06] That cameo is so that is so funny.
[00:07:08] A really fun breezy movie.
[00:07:10] I rewatched Challengers because it just rips.
[00:07:14] I'm sorry, the best movie of the year, my opinion.
[00:07:17] I cannot get over that final 20 minutes, just pure electrifying
[00:07:20] filmmaking like just gets me reinvigorated every time.
[00:07:24] I watched Deep Cover for the first time, which is just awesome.
[00:07:30] I could watch a deep cover a million times over and I watched
[00:07:33] the idea of you, which, you know, I thought was not great.
[00:07:38] Anne Hathaway, get that bag.
[00:07:40] Good for you.
[00:07:41] I'll leave it.
[00:07:42] You know, on Mother's Day to you, say this, Geo, on Mother's
[00:07:48] Day, she was mothering.
[00:07:50] Okay.
[00:07:51] Truly.
[00:07:52] Well, if we're going to talk about mothers, I guess I should
[00:07:55] start off with a film I saw this week called Babes.
[00:07:59] I can't think of a more appropriate film to talk about
[00:08:02] actually on Mother's Day now that I'm thinking about it.
[00:08:04] So great segue there.
[00:08:06] This is my favorite comedy of the year, I think so far.
[00:08:09] I fell head over heels in love with this movie.
[00:08:12] I can fully understand if Ilana Glazer is not your
[00:08:16] cup of tea, just like how I remember some people were
[00:08:20] irked by Billy Eichner's comedy and bros.
[00:08:24] I can see a similar thing happening here.
[00:08:26] But for me, I thought she was a charming delight the whole
[00:08:29] way through, consistently entertaining.
[00:08:31] And so this movie really, really worked for me.
[00:08:34] Michelle Bouto though, who plays her best friend in the
[00:08:36] movie, I thought she delivered a very equally terrific,
[00:08:39] albeit more nuanced and emotionally resonant
[00:08:42] performance.
[00:08:43] Yeah.
[00:08:44] And I thought the two complemented each other really,
[00:08:46] really well.
[00:08:47] It's a very sweet and honest film about the complexities
[00:08:50] of pregnancy.
[00:08:51] It doesn't shy away from the details of what goes into that.
[00:08:56] Motherhood and what that means.
[00:08:58] And of course, you know, adult friendships too as one gets
[00:09:00] older and, you know, for people that you share your life
[00:09:04] with when you're younger, eventually you have to grow
[00:09:08] to understand and learn and appreciate the life that
[00:09:12] you have for yourself and only for yourself.
[00:09:15] And so I really, really liked this film's commentary on
[00:09:18] all those themes.
[00:09:19] Like I said, I don't think it's going to be for
[00:09:21] everyone.
[00:09:22] But I highly recommend, you know, especially if you
[00:09:25] want to laugh, like you should definitely check out
[00:09:27] Babes when it comes out.
[00:09:28] Yeah.
[00:09:29] That was one of the comedic highlights of South
[00:09:32] by Southwest and the response was like weirdly muted.
[00:09:37] But I thought it was hilarious.
[00:09:41] And unfortunately, I can't talk about a few other
[00:09:43] titles that I've seen this week because, you know,
[00:09:46] pre-can screenings.
[00:09:47] But there is one that I can talk about a little bit
[00:09:51] because the social embargo dropped on this.
[00:09:54] So I'm going to keep my thoughts limited to just
[00:09:58] its Oscar prospects and what was said in my social
[00:10:01] reaction and not go any further than this.
[00:10:04] Guys, I saw I saw Furiosa, Mad Max saga.
[00:10:07] Yeah.
[00:10:08] When you originally said mothering, that's what
[00:10:10] I thought you were trying to talk about.
[00:10:13] Oh, George Miller, you beautiful mad bastard.
[00:10:21] My God.
[00:10:22] Oh, the vision that he has for this world, these
[00:10:28] movies is on a whole other level, just far beyond
[00:10:32] anything else that's out there.
[00:10:34] And I will say that some might be taken aback by
[00:10:40] Furiosa's length and pacing.
[00:10:42] It's almost two and a half hours long.
[00:10:45] Yes.
[00:10:46] And it's a much slower pace film than Mad Max
[00:10:49] Fury Road.
[00:10:50] I'll be it.
[00:10:51] I wanted to say this with a little bit of a caveat.
[00:10:53] It moves for those full two and a half hours,
[00:10:56] in my opinion.
[00:10:57] But it's not like a nonstop chase movie the same
[00:11:01] way that Fury Road is.
[00:11:02] This is a movie that has lots of backstory
[00:11:05] and world building and builds up this
[00:11:10] vengeful plot between Furiosa and Dementis,
[00:11:14] who's played by Chris Hemsworth, who I think
[00:11:16] is having his finest hour.
[00:11:18] Yes.
[00:11:19] I think it's some of the best work he's
[00:11:21] ever done before.
[00:11:22] Yes.
[00:11:23] Just Hemsworth in sicko mode.
[00:11:25] The people have been watching this.
[00:11:27] True.
[00:11:28] Yeah.
[00:11:29] No, and I feel like he's delivered shades
[00:11:31] of this that we've seen in movies like
[00:11:33] Bad Times of the L Royale and what was
[00:11:36] that movie he did with Miles Teller?
[00:11:38] Spiderhead.
[00:11:39] Yes.
[00:11:40] Oh yeah.
[00:11:41] So I feel like he loves being in this mode,
[00:11:43] but here it's just...
[00:11:45] Dial to 11.
[00:11:46] It's just full throttle, you know?
[00:11:48] Yes.
[00:11:49] So good.
[00:11:50] Anya Tilla Joy does the Furiosa character
[00:11:53] who I think was iconically played by
[00:11:56] Charlie Sterron in Fury Road.
[00:11:59] That character already is, I think,
[00:12:01] a dramatic legend.
[00:12:03] And Anya Tilla Joy, I think,
[00:12:05] really fits into the role so seamlessly that
[00:12:09] she must have really paid close attention
[00:12:12] to Charlie's performance because it does
[00:12:15] truly feel one in the same, you know?
[00:12:18] As far as the character goes across both films,
[00:12:21] which I thought was highly impressive.
[00:12:23] Of course, the craftsmanship is unbelievable.
[00:12:26] I can't really get into more detail than that.
[00:12:29] I don't know much where my thoughts will end here,
[00:12:31] but you know, obviously I think that,
[00:12:34] as you all recall from other podcast episodes,
[00:12:37] I was very nervous about this movie because
[00:12:39] Mad Max Fury Road is not only one of my favorite
[00:12:41] films of all time, I think it's the greatest
[00:12:43] action movie ever made, period.
[00:12:45] And so this had a lot to live up to.
[00:12:47] I don't think it was ever going to be
[00:12:49] as good as Fury Road, but I can
[00:12:51] delightfully tell you it's not far behind.
[00:12:54] That is all I needed to hear, really.
[00:12:57] Yeah.
[00:12:58] Agreed.
[00:12:59] It was just, should people not try to rewatch
[00:13:02] Fury Road and go in with their own?
[00:13:05] Because you even mentioned it's different.
[00:13:07] I know this one spans 20 years.
[00:13:09] It's a whole different type of thing.
[00:13:11] Is this something you recommend that
[00:13:13] just go in blind or really need the
[00:13:15] shadows of Fury Road in your mind?
[00:13:17] Because that's what I did for King of the
[00:13:19] Planet of the Apes and I thought that
[00:13:21] helped me somewhat a bit instead of being
[00:13:23] like, oh, this isn't exactly like
[00:13:24] Reed's Trilogy, blah, blah, blah.
[00:13:26] Did you do that for Furiosa of Matt?
[00:13:28] I could see good sides and bad sides to this
[00:13:30] because on the good side, if you love
[00:13:32] Fury Road so, so much and you don't want
[00:13:34] those comparisons on your mind so
[00:13:37] prevailantly, I would say, yeah,
[00:13:40] you can get away with your memory
[00:13:44] of the film and the feeling that it
[00:13:46] gave you.
[00:13:47] And just go with that because
[00:13:49] that's how I honestly, I saw it.
[00:13:51] I did not rewatch Fury Road prior to
[00:13:53] watching this because I didn't
[00:13:56] want to put my head into a space of
[00:13:58] oh my god, this is so good and
[00:14:00] you know, give me that like, you know,
[00:14:02] unfair disadvantage of
[00:14:05] not taking this movie on its own terms.
[00:14:07] However, the upside, I think,
[00:14:10] to it is that there are a lot of details
[00:14:13] in the dialogue in Fury Road and
[00:14:15] characters that are kind of like
[00:14:18] background characters too at times
[00:14:20] that this movie incorporates
[00:14:23] and gives explanation to and it
[00:14:25] only just helps to further build out
[00:14:27] this world a bit more and
[00:14:30] those small details were things that
[00:14:32] I really appreciated.
[00:14:33] Interesting, okay, I'm excited.
[00:14:35] I mean, I was in already but
[00:14:37] I'm excited.
[00:14:38] Yeah, I can't f**k away.
[00:14:40] I mean, I'll tell you this,
[00:14:42] this is my final thing I'll say about it.
[00:14:44] I enjoyed it so, so much that
[00:14:46] I went out of my way to get another ticket
[00:14:48] to watch it again, I can and I could
[00:14:50] be watching something new in the meantime
[00:14:52] but I decided no, I want to watch this again.
[00:14:56] Nice.
[00:14:58] Hey, it's Kaylee Cuoco for Priceline.
[00:15:00] Ready to go to your happy place for a happy price?
[00:15:02] Well, why didn't you say so?
[00:15:03] Just download the Priceline app right now
[00:15:05] and save up to 60% on hotels.
[00:15:07] So whether it's Cousin Kevin's
[00:15:09] Cousin Concert in Kansas City, go Kevin!
[00:15:11] Or Becky's Bachelorette Bash in Bermuda.
[00:15:14] You never have to miss a trip ever again.
[00:15:16] So download the Priceline app today.
[00:15:18] Your savings are waiting.
[00:15:20] Go to your happy place for a happy price.
[00:15:24] Got your happy price, Priceline.
[00:15:28] Yeah, so that's pretty much it
[00:15:30] for what we've been watching this past week.
[00:15:32] Speaking of Cannes, as you all know,
[00:15:34] two days time opening up
[00:15:36] with the Quentin Dupier film,
[00:15:40] the second act playing out of competition.
[00:15:44] And then from there, it's just going to be
[00:15:46] 11 or 10, however you want to count this,
[00:15:50] like straight days of non-stop premieres
[00:15:53] and reactions and reviews
[00:15:55] and trying to figure out
[00:15:57] what's going to be a contender, what's not.
[00:15:59] So when you look at this year's lineup,
[00:16:02] I think we all have an obvious answer
[00:16:06] for what we're looking forward to
[00:16:07] and maybe not so obvious answers.
[00:16:09] So Giovanni, for example,
[00:16:12] I know you're obviously looking forward
[00:16:14] to seeing Furiosa, Megalopolis.
[00:16:17] What is maybe a not so obvious choice,
[00:16:19] something that you like has caught your eye
[00:16:22] that you're like, yeah, you know what,
[00:16:23] I want to check that out.
[00:16:24] I'm really excited for the substance.
[00:16:26] I loved Revenge and I think, you know,
[00:16:28] with Demi Moore and Mark O'Qualley,
[00:16:30] that just sounds like a pairing
[00:16:31] that I need absolutely now.
[00:16:33] And Enora, I think after the synopsis
[00:16:35] officially came out for Sean Baker's and Enora,
[00:16:37] I think that's actually a very funny premise.
[00:16:40] I don't know if the movie's going to be
[00:16:41] straight comedy, but I mean,
[00:16:42] if it's anything like Red Rocket, I'm totally in.
[00:16:45] Yeah, the substance is such a curious one,
[00:16:48] in my opinion.
[00:16:50] It's being distributed by MUBI.
[00:16:52] I thought I...
[00:16:55] I don't know why, but for some reason
[00:16:57] I thought this was going to be distributed
[00:16:58] by Universal Pictures.
[00:17:00] Maybe they sold it off to MUBI.
[00:17:03] I'm not sure what the story is there,
[00:17:05] but I am, yeah, dying to watch the substance.
[00:17:08] Coralie Farghit, who did Revenge,
[00:17:11] I think is such an extraordinary talent.
[00:17:13] And there's going to definitely be, I'm sure,
[00:17:16] lots of gore in this one.
[00:17:19] They say it's a body horror film, so...
[00:17:21] Yes.
[00:17:22] ...be prepared.
[00:17:23] And then Enora, you know,
[00:17:25] what's very curious about Enora
[00:17:27] is that it's having its premiere
[00:17:29] on May 21st,
[00:17:31] which is conveniently, or coincidentally,
[00:17:34] or anything that you could think of here
[00:17:36] as far as stars aligning
[00:17:39] the same day that some of Neon's other
[00:17:42] Palm Door winners debuted at Cannes,
[00:17:45] including last year's Anatomy of a Fall.
[00:17:47] They want another one.
[00:17:49] They're ready.
[00:17:51] I mean, can you blame them?
[00:17:53] I mean, I think Sean Baker is
[00:17:56] steadily getting closer and closer
[00:17:58] to one day winning the Palm.
[00:17:59] I can't do that.
[00:18:00] Honestly, I could see it happening.
[00:18:02] I think that's when where you need
[00:18:03] the right film with the right jury.
[00:18:05] Yeah.
[00:18:07] I mean, this jury, I mean, that's promising.
[00:18:09] There's a lot of people who I'm sure are like
[00:18:11] fans like Lily Gladstone and Greta Gerwig.
[00:18:13] And I think it's possible.
[00:18:15] Again, this is all like we don't know
[00:18:17] what the movie's like, but I mean,
[00:18:19] I agree with Matt.
[00:18:20] He is inching towards that direction.
[00:18:22] Yeah.
[00:18:23] The jury was announced, I believe,
[00:18:24] this past week if I recall correctly.
[00:18:26] We only knew about Greta Gerwig
[00:18:27] as the jury president,
[00:18:29] but then we got the announcement
[00:18:30] of J.A. Bayona, Lily Gladstone,
[00:18:32] like you said, Eva Green,
[00:18:34] Coreda, Hirakazu, Nadine Lobaki,
[00:18:37] Pierre Francesco Favino,
[00:18:39] Ebru Salon.
[00:18:41] It's a pretty stacked, oh, an Omar Sy.
[00:18:44] It's a pretty stacked lineup here
[00:18:46] for the jury.
[00:18:47] So I'm really curious to see what
[00:18:48] they end up going for.
[00:18:49] There's like at least four or five
[00:18:51] people in that jury who could be
[00:18:53] jury presidents themselves.
[00:18:55] So that's how you know it's a good jury.
[00:18:57] Yeah, absolutely.
[00:18:59] Was there anything outside of the
[00:19:01] competition that you guys are looking
[00:19:03] forward to?
[00:19:04] Horizon.
[00:19:05] Oh, yeah.
[00:19:06] I forgot how obsessed you are with
[00:19:08] Horizon.
[00:19:09] That's true.
[00:19:10] Oh, God, yeah.
[00:19:11] Come on.
[00:19:12] It's going to be three hours of cowboy
[00:19:14] cinema.
[00:19:15] Let's go.
[00:19:16] The epics are back.
[00:19:17] You know, I rewatched the trailer
[00:19:19] for this the other day just to
[00:19:21] try and get myself in the headspace
[00:19:22] of, OK, now I know this is a
[00:19:24] three-hour movie.
[00:19:25] I still can't really figure out
[00:19:27] if the trailer that Warner Bros.
[00:19:29] dropped was for part one or if it
[00:19:31] was for both parts because there's
[00:19:33] so much going on in that trailer
[00:19:36] that I'm like, well, maybe it is for
[00:19:38] part one because the movie is now
[00:19:40] three hours long.
[00:19:41] I do not know.
[00:19:42] But you know, I got to agree.
[00:19:44] Yeah, there is a part of me that is
[00:19:46] looking forward to romanticizing
[00:19:48] about, you know, the old West and
[00:19:51] seeing how Costner's classical
[00:19:53] approach to this story
[00:19:55] translates in 2024.
[00:19:57] I think a lot of people are all
[00:20:00] so really excited for
[00:20:03] kinds of kindness from
[00:20:05] Yorga's Lanfamos.
[00:20:06] Yeah.
[00:20:07] Perez.
[00:20:08] I'm really looking forward to
[00:20:11] rumors.
[00:20:13] Yeah.
[00:20:14] Guy Madden, Everdunton
[00:20:16] movie with, oh God,
[00:20:18] isn't it?
[00:20:19] Can't play a jet.
[00:20:20] And at least you have a candor.
[00:20:22] Can't play a jet.
[00:20:23] Yeah.
[00:20:24] That's going to be weird.
[00:20:25] I'm so looking forward to it though.
[00:20:28] I think also now the time of us
[00:20:31] recording that photo came out of
[00:20:33] Maria Bakalova and the apprentice.
[00:20:35] Oh, yeah.
[00:20:36] Which we were discussing in our chat
[00:20:38] yesterday just a variety of us going.
[00:20:41] I don't know if this is going to be good,
[00:20:43] but it's all yobasa.
[00:20:44] I don't know if Stan's going to do
[00:20:46] a trumpet mutation, but maybe
[00:20:48] physically he could do it really good.
[00:20:49] So it's just a lot of back and forth
[00:20:50] of like, what is this movie going to
[00:20:52] be?
[00:20:53] I'm very curious.
[00:20:54] I'm going to make a prediction.
[00:20:56] I'm going to make a prediction, guys.
[00:20:59] I think this is the film that Netflix
[00:21:01] is going to acquire out of Cannes.
[00:21:03] That makes sense unless like
[00:21:06] they go with neon.
[00:21:09] What else over here?
[00:21:10] I mean, there's so many things.
[00:21:12] I'm looking forward to pretty much everything.
[00:21:14] I hate to be boring like that.
[00:21:15] I will say though after
[00:21:17] the terrible, shameful news
[00:21:21] of what's going on with Muhammad Rasulov
[00:21:25] who is being jailed
[00:21:28] for up to eight years in prison,
[00:21:30] fined and flogged.
[00:21:33] I think there's going to be a lot of
[00:21:35] attention around the premiere of The
[00:21:37] Seed of the Sacred Fig.
[00:21:38] Something tells me that
[00:21:40] the jury especially might want to make
[00:21:42] a statement with that film,
[00:21:44] particularly for this filmmaker.
[00:21:50] It's really, really disheartening
[00:21:52] what Iranian filmmakers are facing.
[00:21:55] Not just over there, but other parts of the world as well
[00:21:58] from censorship from their governments.
[00:22:02] Moving over from that, I will say
[00:22:04] I think the midnight lineup this year
[00:22:07] looks pretty fun.
[00:22:10] I'm particularly looking forward to watching
[00:22:12] the surfer just due to the presence of Nicholas Cage.
[00:22:16] We'll see how that plays.
[00:22:18] There's a South Korean film also
[00:22:20] in the midnight section called I, the Executioner.
[00:22:22] Yes.
[00:22:23] Anytime there's a South Korean film in any
[00:22:25] midnight section, I always feel compelled to check it out
[00:22:27] because nobody does it better than South Korea, truly.
[00:22:31] There's a three hour of account of Monte Cristo film
[00:22:34] which I...
[00:22:37] Give it to me.
[00:22:40] I mean Josh was telling me,
[00:22:42] Josh Parm who's going with me to Cannes
[00:22:44] he was telling me, listen
[00:22:47] I don't know if I want to watch this
[00:22:49] but Pierre Naini is in it.
[00:22:51] And he's a very beautiful man.
[00:22:54] Oh Josh, go and tell me all about it please.
[00:23:02] What else we got here?
[00:23:04] I don't know if I'm looking forward to the movie itself
[00:23:07] so much as the one particular piece of casting
[00:23:10] but Christmas Eve in Miller's Point
[00:23:15] directed by Tyler Taramina
[00:23:17] happens to star a certain Tiktok star
[00:23:21] by the name of Francesca Scorsese.
[00:23:23] I don't know if you're familiar.
[00:23:25] Yes, I am.
[00:23:29] But very, very curious.
[00:23:33] There's a lot of
[00:23:35] interesting things going on here with this movie
[00:23:37] that I'm going out of my way to schedule this film.
[00:23:41] I say going out of my way because it's always hard
[00:23:44] to fit in films in the sidebar section
[00:23:48] traditionally it can
[00:23:50] but this is one I'm making an exception for
[00:23:53] and I think it's going to pay off
[00:23:55] because I just have this very, very strong feeling
[00:23:58] that this one could surprise people.
[00:24:02] I will say it has been hard to schedule
[00:24:04] so I'm hoping it does pay off.
[00:24:07] I'm hoping that for you.
[00:24:10] Yeah, you have Sawyer Spielberg also in it
[00:24:12] the son of Steven Spielberg, Michael Sarah.
[00:24:15] Yep.
[00:24:17] I'll be very curious about this one.
[00:24:19] This is the one that is
[00:24:21] in the same section as last year's The Sweet East was
[00:24:25] and that film had a little bit of crossover
[00:24:28] playing at other film festivals later on in a year
[00:24:31] so maybe this will follow a similar trajectory as that.
[00:24:35] And then finally
[00:24:37] the ticketing process for Cannes
[00:24:39] is a massive pain in the ass
[00:24:41] but at the same time it's
[00:24:44] a festival that
[00:24:46] has like this, I don't know how to describe it
[00:24:49] but when you agonize and stress so long over
[00:24:52] can I get into this, am I going to be able to see this?
[00:24:55] And then you finally somehow manage to get a ticket
[00:24:58] and get in.
[00:24:59] The payoff is that much sweeter.
[00:25:01] I used to think
[00:25:03] that Cannes was a festival that was just known for
[00:25:07] getting booze from the crowd
[00:25:10] and movies that were
[00:25:12] panned so terribly.
[00:25:14] You have these colossal failures
[00:25:16] of premieres that happen at Cannes sometimes
[00:25:19] but I have come to realize
[00:25:22] that's not what the festival is truly about
[00:25:25] and yeah maybe there will be like one of those a year or something
[00:25:29] but realistically this is a festival that
[00:25:32] just has the best filmmakers from all over the world
[00:25:35] and in my opinion it is the world's
[00:25:38] not only the world's largest film festival
[00:25:40] but I dare say the greatest film festival
[00:25:43] out there because
[00:25:46] you just can't really beat the variety that's here.
[00:25:49] There's so much.
[00:25:51] And one of those films is a film that we actually have
[00:25:54] a trailer to discuss this week.
[00:25:56] It's in one of the sidebar sections.
[00:26:00] It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival
[00:26:04] and it's going to be released on August 9th
[00:26:07] from Metrograph Pictures.
[00:26:09] This is a small film called Good One
[00:26:12] which is the directorial debut of India Donaldson.
[00:26:15] Let's take a look at the trailer for this one
[00:26:17] and let's give some thoughts.
[00:26:53] I'm going the speed limit.
[00:26:55] You're actually going five miles over.
[00:26:57] And you always go like at least ten over.
[00:26:59] That is my privilege as father.
[00:27:01] She's a better driver than you man.
[00:27:03] That's because I taught her.
[00:27:04] Damn that's heavy.
[00:27:05] You're joking.
[00:27:06] What?
[00:27:07] We are hiking all day.
[00:27:09] Yeah.
[00:27:10] So it's gonna be a lot heavier after an hour or seven.
[00:27:13] I'm fine.
[00:27:14] I'm not sure how you really do a trailer for this movie
[00:27:19] because the whole point of it is that
[00:27:22] it's not really doing much of anything until it is.
[00:27:27] I think the trailer conveys that.
[00:27:29] I just worry that some people might get the wrong idea
[00:27:32] that this is some sort of a thriller or something.
[00:27:34] Yeah, that there's going to be this big thing,
[00:27:38] this big hammer that drops and it's not big at all.
[00:27:42] It's just this little thing that feels much larger.
[00:27:46] But that's the power of the movie though in my opinion.
[00:27:48] Yeah, but that's what I'm saying.
[00:27:50] I don't know really how you make a trailer for this movie
[00:27:53] that preserves.
[00:27:55] That.
[00:27:56] Yeah.
[00:27:57] Well, I think the hard thing is that they need to
[00:28:00] at least tell people that there is something which they have here
[00:28:03] but the challenge is how do you not overstate it
[00:28:07] because if you oversell it too much to people
[00:28:10] they're going to go in expecting this big thing like you said
[00:28:13] and then they're going to be like wait that was it.
[00:28:15] And you know that kind of diminishes the power of what that
[00:28:18] thing is and that thing is wild.
[00:28:21] Really like it hits you when it happens.
[00:28:23] Yeah, yeah.
[00:28:24] Just yeah, you don't want to oversell something for a film
[00:28:27] that is entirely understated whether it's from the
[00:28:30] performances or I think the beauty of it.
[00:28:32] It's the way the film isn't really defined in one thing
[00:28:35] and morphs and ebbs just like all the rivers they end up
[00:28:38] staring at when they're hiking.
[00:28:40] It's honestly one of my favorite films I've seen this
[00:28:44] year.
[00:28:45] I would recommend that if you haven't seen a trailer for
[00:28:47] anything going blind.
[00:28:48] I think this does a OK job.
[00:28:50] It's also just a hard movie to market and show a trailer
[00:28:54] for so I think it does an all right job of like trying
[00:28:57] to hook people in.
[00:28:59] You know what this reminded me of?
[00:29:00] This reminded me of watching like a one act play.
[00:29:03] Yeah.
[00:29:04] Three actors.
[00:29:05] Yeah.
[00:29:06] Very intimate even though they're in a fast setting
[00:29:08] it feels very intimate and you get a lot of dialogue
[00:29:13] that slowly reveals more about the relationships
[00:29:17] between these three people and the performances are
[00:29:20] very natural, very convincing and it all builds to
[00:29:24] like I said that particular moment and it
[00:29:27] recontextualizes everything that you've then seen
[00:29:29] beforehand.
[00:29:30] And I think that you know it's the kind of
[00:29:33] economical storytelling because it's less than 90
[00:29:35] minutes long.
[00:29:36] You know it gave me that same feeling of watching a
[00:29:39] one act play.
[00:29:40] Fantastic film.
[00:29:41] So good.
[00:29:42] Yeah.
[00:29:43] I highly recommend anyone that's going to be a can in
[00:29:46] the director's fortnight section to check this one
[00:29:49] out if you did not get a chance to see it at
[00:29:51] Sundance definitely recommended for sure.
[00:29:54] Yeah.
[00:29:55] Our next trailer here and believe me people we
[00:29:57] have a lot of trailers to discuss so bear with
[00:29:59] me.
[00:30:00] Our next one here is called Treasure which had
[00:30:03] its world premiere at the Berlin International
[00:30:06] Film Festival starring Lena Dunham and Stephen Fry.
[00:30:09] It is going to be released by Bleaker Street
[00:30:12] in theaters on June 14th.
[00:30:14] Here we go.
[00:30:16] Ruthie I'm so glad to see you.
[00:30:18] Dad what happened?
[00:30:20] There was a problem with suitcase and nice
[00:30:22] man's dick.
[00:30:23] No in New York at the airport.
[00:30:24] I went to McDonald's for the hunger.
[00:30:27] This is my daughter, a very famous
[00:30:32] New York.
[00:30:33] I'm a journalist.
[00:30:34] Yes, but they're rich and the famous.
[00:30:36] I puffed you being this people that does not
[00:30:38] make me famous.
[00:30:41] What Jew goes to Poland as tourist?
[00:30:45] You and mom never talked about the past so
[00:30:48] I wanted to see where you grew up.
[00:30:50] I couldn't sleep in the bed was so lumpy.
[00:30:53] It's good for the sacks you know but not
[00:30:55] for the sleeping.
[00:30:56] Dad don't.
[00:30:57] Today we go to Warsaw of a ghetto wall.
[00:31:00] I really don't think this is the Warsaw ghetto wall.
[00:31:02] Ruthie of the wall is a wall.
[00:31:04] Say the cheese.
[00:31:06] The cheese.
[00:31:07] Stop derailing this trip.
[00:31:09] Just ready for like all the people coming out
[00:31:12] of the woodwork once again to say how much
[00:31:14] they hate Lena Dunham and I'm just like
[00:31:17] can we please stop?
[00:31:20] Did you guys see the Ron Tomatoes rating
[00:31:22] for this?
[00:31:23] No.
[00:31:24] I think that one's out.
[00:31:25] Yeah because of the Berlin premiere this
[00:31:28] movie has a 36% on Ron Tomatoes.
[00:31:31] Yikes.
[00:31:32] Now I need to ask because Dan you started
[00:31:34] off with that do you think there is
[00:31:37] a Lena Dunham bias or do you think the
[00:31:40] film based on the trailer just doesn't
[00:31:42] look that good?
[00:31:43] I think there definitely is a Lena Dunham
[00:31:46] bias like just out there in general but
[00:31:49] also like she did she neither wrote
[00:31:52] nor directed this so I think that
[00:31:56] it's just also very possible that it's
[00:31:59] not very good at all.
[00:32:01] It also seems like very different from
[00:32:04] the parts that she usually plays so I
[00:32:08] appreciate the willingness on her part
[00:32:11] to try to stretch herself but that also
[00:32:14] means that this could go very wrong
[00:32:16] very easily and also especially given
[00:32:19] the subject matter that is what has me
[00:32:22] most worried.
[00:32:25] See I'm in that sweet spot or I don't
[00:32:27] really have like any feelings towards
[00:32:29] Lena Dunham because this is going to be
[00:32:31] crazy thing to say.
[00:32:32] I never watched girls so I don't have
[00:32:35] those opinions of like I know for the
[00:32:37] past few years how people kind of
[00:32:39] switched on Lena Dunham and some of
[00:32:41] the films she's made.
[00:32:42] I like Stephen Fry.
[00:32:44] I watched his trailer and I was just
[00:32:46] like I'm good.
[00:32:48] I didn't really get much out of it.
[00:32:50] I felt like I got entirely what the
[00:32:52] movie was going to be watching the
[00:32:54] trailer and I was like okay I don't
[00:32:56] need to watch the movie itself.
[00:32:58] Yeah exactly.
[00:33:00] I kind of got that same feeling too.
[00:33:02] I was like is this trailer going to spoil
[00:33:04] the entire movie?
[00:33:05] It kind of feels like it does.
[00:33:07] I think for me I'll still watch it
[00:33:10] for Stephen Fry.
[00:33:12] He does look like he's delivering a
[00:33:14] heartfelt performance in this and he
[00:33:16] was the aspect of the trailer that pulled
[00:33:19] all.
[00:33:20] I can't say I'm like wholly looking forward
[00:33:22] to this but at the same time I'm willing
[00:33:24] to give it a chance.
[00:33:25] Yeah same.
[00:33:26] Now another movie that also doesn't
[00:33:29] have the greatest run Tomatoes
[00:33:31] rating but I saw this a can last year.
[00:33:34] I really liked this movie.
[00:33:36] How you all feel about it I don't know
[00:33:38] but you know we'll find out soon
[00:33:40] enough.
[00:33:41] This is the trailer for Firebrand
[00:33:42] starring Alicia Vikander, Jude Law.
[00:33:44] It is going to be released in theaters
[00:33:47] on June 21st from Roadside Attractions.
[00:33:51] Let's take a look at this one.
[00:33:53] In a rotten blood-soaked island kingdom
[00:33:56] there once was a queen by the name
[00:33:59] of Catherine Parr.
[00:34:01] She was the sixth wife of the
[00:34:03] vengeful King Henry the Eighth.
[00:34:06] I won't be patron to heretics.
[00:34:10] He will kill me like he did my mother.
[00:34:12] She would never do that to you.
[00:34:14] Do you hear me?
[00:34:16] The five wives who came before her
[00:34:18] all met and timely ends.
[00:34:21] But Catherine's fate was to change
[00:34:24] the kingdom forever.
[00:34:26] Look I'm here for pretty much anything
[00:34:28] that allows Alicia Vikander to let it rip.
[00:34:32] Yeah same.
[00:34:34] That's a good point.
[00:34:36] Like that's all you really need.
[00:34:38] That's all I need anyway but the thing
[00:34:41] that is more, that has more
[00:34:43] interested me about this one is
[00:34:45] you know it's carrying my news.
[00:34:48] I have really enjoyed as a director.
[00:34:51] So Dan here's what I'll say about that
[00:34:53] because I knew you were going to say this.
[00:34:56] This is definitely not
[00:34:59] as good as the invisible life of...
[00:35:01] That's what I've heard.
[00:35:03] Yeah.
[00:35:05] Which makes me sad but like
[00:35:08] this happens.
[00:35:10] Yeah it does absolutely.
[00:35:12] It does have another film at this year's Cannes.
[00:35:15] Yes.
[00:35:16] Maybe that will be a return to form.
[00:35:18] It's described as an erotic thriller so
[00:35:20] fingers crossed on that one.
[00:35:22] But at the same time I think
[00:35:24] this for me was very much
[00:35:26] a tailored
[00:35:28] for me kind of
[00:35:30] movie where
[00:35:32] I love my medieval
[00:35:34] you know Game of Thrones
[00:35:36] palace
[00:35:38] intrigue and
[00:35:40] political backstabbing
[00:35:42] and anytime I get something like that
[00:35:44] a Jude law just hamming it up as this like
[00:35:46] evil
[00:35:48] King Henry the Eighth.
[00:35:50] So there was a lot here that
[00:35:52] really just appealed to my sensibilities
[00:35:54] of what I like but at the same time
[00:35:56] I was not surprised to see
[00:35:58] a lot of people
[00:36:00] kind of turn on this movie.
[00:36:04] I will say though supporting
[00:36:06] performance from Simon Russell Beale
[00:36:08] yes. Right.
[00:36:10] I will never turn down an opportunity
[00:36:12] to appreciate that man. Always.
[00:36:14] Matt you said it's playing a Tribeca
[00:36:16] isn't it. It is.
[00:36:18] All right. Well yeah that's the US
[00:36:20] premiere right.
[00:36:22] All right. I'll watch it.
[00:36:24] Yeah.
[00:36:26] All right next up here
[00:36:28] we have a film that premiered at Sundance
[00:36:30] not this year Sundance last
[00:36:32] year Sundance so we've been waiting
[00:36:34] for this one for a very long time
[00:36:36] it is Fancy Dance
[00:36:38] starring Lily Gladstone
[00:36:40] finally going to be released
[00:36:42] by Apple in a limited
[00:36:44] release on June 21st and then on
[00:36:46] Apple TV plus on June 28th
[00:36:48] let's take a look at the trailer for
[00:36:50] this one.
[00:37:09] This is Jack's Good Iron again
[00:37:11] I'm calling about my sister's case
[00:37:13] What a toly!
[00:37:15] No I did speak to the
[00:37:17] sheriffs. What a toly!
[00:37:19] No they said the res's federal jurisdiction
[00:37:21] dead. He ain't been at any of the
[00:37:23] searches. I didn't come all the way
[00:37:25] out here to fight. Why did he come?
[00:37:27] Don't come back soon.
[00:37:33] State's going to take Rokey.
[00:37:37] I'm here to talk to you about your
[00:37:39] niece. We ran your background check and I had
[00:37:41] no choice but to place Rokey within your father
[00:37:43] You can't do this.
[00:37:45] I'm going to grandpa's.
[00:37:47] Just let me talk to her!
[00:37:49] You know I gotta say the timing for
[00:37:51] this one actually probably worked out for the better
[00:37:53] because Lily Gladstone now
[00:37:55] with both Under the Bridge and Kill
[00:37:57] As the Flower Moon has
[00:37:59] so much goodwill
[00:38:01] built up amongst audiences, critics
[00:38:03] Hollywood in general that I think
[00:38:05] it's going to help this film's
[00:38:07] release more so than if it had been
[00:38:09] released before Kill As the Flower Moon.
[00:38:11] So I do appreciate
[00:38:13] the turn of events
[00:38:15] if you will for that reason alone
[00:38:17] at the same time I heard
[00:38:19] from so many people
[00:38:21] that this was another
[00:38:23] awards worthy performance from Lily Gladstone
[00:38:25] and she was absolutely remarkable
[00:38:27] in this movie so I can't wait to see
[00:38:29] what she does here.
[00:38:31] I'm so glad that this finally got
[00:38:33] a distributor and like
[00:38:35] you know I love that Lily has
[00:38:37] a good relationship with Apple now
[00:38:39] apparently that is fantastic
[00:38:41] yes keep doing it
[00:38:43] keep working on it
[00:38:45] and I'm like so happy
[00:38:47] because I continually miss this movie
[00:38:49] whenever it's playing places
[00:38:51] Yes, me too.
[00:38:53] Can relate.
[00:38:55] I'm really happy that I'm finally going to
[00:38:57] get a chance to see it
[00:38:59] I was going to say you more so though.
[00:39:01] Missed so many chances.
[00:39:03] You fast last year.
[00:39:05] Yeah, I can't.
[00:39:07] That's hilarious.
[00:39:09] I think out of all the trailers
[00:39:11] we watched for this episode
[00:39:13] this might have been my favorite
[00:39:15] it looks fantastic also Shay Wiggum just pops
[00:39:17] up and I'm like yeah
[00:39:19] that's my guy anything with
[00:39:21] Shay Wiggum pops up I'm like I'm gonna watch
[00:39:23] it okay it doesn't matter.
[00:39:25] You know that there's some level of quality
[00:39:27] when Shay Wiggum pops up it's like
[00:39:29] truly yeah
[00:39:31] he's one of those character actors
[00:39:33] that elevates everything that he's doing
[00:39:35] yeah and it's just he looks like a dirt bag
[00:39:37] and it's like how we can you imagine
[00:39:39] when you're casting it's like we need someone who just seems grimy
[00:39:41] and looks like a dirt bag you're just like call up
[00:39:43] Shay Wiggum and he's like yeah I'll do
[00:39:45] it and it's fantastic and Lily Gladstone
[00:39:47] looks phenomenal in it
[00:39:49] I think it's one of those trailers
[00:39:51] that definitely probably
[00:39:53] we mentioned good one over her plays
[00:39:55] probably how much
[00:39:57] really happens in the movie I feel like it's going to
[00:39:59] be a bit slower than what we're seeing
[00:40:01] here but I think that's a good way to sell this
[00:40:03] because I'm definitely in I will
[00:40:05] watch this. Yeah slower a bit more
[00:40:07] somber reflective
[00:40:09] and contemplative I'm sure
[00:40:11] yeah those are the vibes I got from this
[00:40:13] too but the reviews for this have been fantastic
[00:40:15] so it's definitely
[00:40:17] put me in the right headspace to appreciate
[00:40:19] it when it drops. Anyway
[00:40:21] and also too
[00:40:23] more Native American representation
[00:40:25] on screen. Hell yeah
[00:40:27] can't go wrong with that. Yeah.
[00:40:29] Okay
[00:40:31] time to talk about a trailer for
[00:40:33] a movie that Dan and I saw at Toronto
[00:40:35] this past year
[00:40:37] this is the trailer for Mother Couch
[00:40:39] starring Ewan McGregor
[00:40:41] Reese Evans
[00:40:43] Taylor Russell, Ellen Burston
[00:40:45] F Murray Abraham
[00:40:47] it's going to be released
[00:40:49] in theaters on July 5th
[00:40:51] Gio
[00:40:53] I'm very curious to know what you think about
[00:40:55] this movie.
[00:40:57] Oh good furniture balance. Ready to leave mom
[00:40:59] What did she say to you?
[00:41:01] She said she wanted to stay
[00:41:03] and you?
[00:41:05] Same. Are you alright?
[00:41:07] I'm fine and
[00:41:09] I'm just not going with you
[00:41:11] That's your mom up there
[00:41:13] Is there something wrong?
[00:41:15] What is
[00:41:17] going on? Who is that?
[00:41:19] That's my older sister Linda
[00:41:21] My mom is upstairs on a sofa
[00:41:23] How long have you been here? How long has she been here?
[00:41:25] 2-3 hours. Why don't we just
[00:41:27] call someone and come pick her up? Do you guys think
[00:41:29] you're leaving pretty soon?
[00:41:31] You didn't have to go all crazy
[00:41:33] just to get the three of us together. She could
[00:41:35] stay here. We cannot stay.
[00:41:37] Gregg maybe she's trying to tell us something
[00:41:39] you know? I mean mom we're going to have to carry you
[00:41:41] out of here if you don't want to leave by your own. Oh good
[00:41:43] luck with that
[00:41:45] as soon as you grab my arms and legs
[00:41:47] I'll throw myself all around and I'll
[00:41:49] bite you and I'll kick you
[00:41:51] and if you get as far as the stairs
[00:41:53] I will fall
[00:41:55] and hit my head so hard
[00:41:57] Okay
[00:41:59] For the two people who've seen the movie
[00:42:01] Is it a good reason
[00:42:03] just to go see Taylor Russell alone
[00:42:05] because watching this trailer I'm like
[00:42:07] No. I will say this
[00:42:09] If you're an U.M. or Gregger fan
[00:42:11] It's a good reason to see this because that man
[00:42:13] is giving this film everything
[00:42:15] he has
[00:42:17] Everything. He thought he was delivering
[00:42:19] his Oscar winning performance I think in this
[00:42:21] movie and he's great
[00:42:23] He's excellent. Oh good
[00:42:25] but like this movie
[00:42:27] This is the movie that
[00:42:29] people who hated Boas Afraid
[00:42:31] thought that movie was
[00:42:33] Oh that's so perfect. Yes
[00:42:35] I could really agree with you on that.
[00:42:37] I love Boas Afraid so does that mean
[00:42:39] I'll just hate this?
[00:42:41] Probably because
[00:42:43] I tell you I loved Boas Afraid
[00:42:45] and need to
[00:42:47] despise this movie
[00:42:49] I was
[00:42:51] sitting next to
[00:42:53] Nadia Dalamate
[00:42:55] in our screening at TIFF
[00:42:57] and we just kept looking at each other
[00:42:59] through outgoing
[00:43:01] What is happening
[00:43:03] What is going on
[00:43:05] What the hell is this movie
[00:43:07] It's going for the same thing
[00:43:09] that Boas Afraid is
[00:43:11] but it's
[00:43:13] not nearly as
[00:43:15] well-formed
[00:43:17] in its ideas of
[00:43:19] how it wants to go about this
[00:43:21] surrealism
[00:43:23] I think the problem was the execution
[00:43:25] of making this almost play like
[00:43:27] confining it to
[00:43:29] this one setting
[00:43:31] I think that was probably where
[00:43:33] the film faltered a bit because
[00:43:35] it is absurd and it veers off
[00:43:37] in some extremely wild
[00:43:39] directions but it's all
[00:43:41] within this one
[00:43:43] space
[00:43:45] and there's some interesting
[00:43:47] work in play here and I could see
[00:43:49] how on the page this could have read
[00:43:51] for especially some of these actors
[00:43:53] to come on board
[00:43:55] I think the execution is
[00:43:57] what fails it ultimately
[00:43:59] but I will say that
[00:44:01] I do think
[00:44:03] even despite my own feelings
[00:44:05] towards it, dance feelings towards it
[00:44:07] the general consensus
[00:44:09] of feelings towards it
[00:44:11] would be that
[00:44:13] I wouldn't say you have to go out of your way
[00:44:15] for it but if you find that you have an opportunity
[00:44:17] I think it's worth watching
[00:44:19] to at least formulate your own opinion
[00:44:21] on about it
[00:44:23] It might still be negative but it does have
[00:44:25] this kind of alluring
[00:44:27] curiosity factor
[00:44:29] to it that
[00:44:31] I could see
[00:44:35] let me be clear, I don't think you're going to like that
[00:44:37] You are strong
[00:44:39] Here's the real question
[00:44:41] The next best picture listeners
[00:44:43] want to know which Ellen Burstin movie
[00:44:45] you rather watch this or the last
[00:44:47] Exorcist movie
[00:44:49] Oh this
[00:44:51] I will say that as much as
[00:44:53] this movie is not good
[00:44:55] it's going
[00:44:57] for something that so few movies
[00:44:59] go for
[00:45:01] that alone makes it worth
[00:45:03] a watch, I do not think
[00:45:05] that it is successful at it
[00:45:07] at all
[00:45:09] but it's definitely worth a watch
[00:45:11] at the very least for
[00:45:13] the WTF
[00:45:15] of it all
[00:45:17] it may even be better
[00:45:19] on an edible
[00:45:21] And you and McGregor's performance
[00:45:23] Yeah, well thank you for both
[00:45:25] selling me on this very good
[00:45:27] Alright our next trailer
[00:45:29] is for a movie that's much much better I promise
[00:45:31] This premiered at Venice
[00:45:33] last year, screened at
[00:45:35] a couple of other film festivals
[00:45:37] it's had a slow build up
[00:45:39] towards it's eventual release this year
[00:45:41] but it's one of the most
[00:45:43] critically acclaimed and harrowing movies
[00:45:45] you will probably see
[00:45:47] This is the trailer for
[00:45:49] Agnieszka Holland's Green
[00:45:51] Border
[00:46:05] Shuhab
[00:46:23] Yes
[00:46:25] Yes
[00:46:27] Now give it to me now
[00:46:29] That looked really good I'm not gonna lie
[00:46:31] that was a really good trailer
[00:46:33] This is
[00:46:35] Let me put it to you this way
[00:46:37] for a movie that has
[00:46:39] very little
[00:46:41] violence in it
[00:46:43] I still felt like
[00:46:45] that I got that same
[00:46:47] not turning in my stomach
[00:46:49] feeling of watching
[00:46:51] something like
[00:46:53] something like a hotel
[00:46:55] Rwanda or a Schindler's List
[00:46:57] where it's just
[00:46:59] so it feels so
[00:47:01] almost documentary like
[00:47:03] and how it's filmed
[00:47:05] and the performances and
[00:47:07] the pain of these characters
[00:47:09] going through and the struggle
[00:47:11] and you really really feel
[00:47:13] every like distressing
[00:47:15] moment so
[00:47:17] potently it's
[00:47:19] unflinching
[00:47:21] in it's look at Europe's
[00:47:23] refugee crisis
[00:47:25] I
[00:47:27] respect the hell out of this movie so much
[00:47:29] It's a movie that's
[00:47:31] gonna get people talking it already has
[00:47:33] I think it's a very
[00:47:35] vital piece of
[00:47:37] filmmaking with
[00:47:39] so many heartbreaking performances
[00:47:41] and it's scope is
[00:47:43] pretty broad broader than I expected
[00:47:45] but
[00:47:47] at the same time it feels also
[00:47:49] extremely contained
[00:47:51] as well it's attempting
[00:47:53] to do a lot
[00:47:55] but it you know does have
[00:47:57] the runtime of nearly two and a half
[00:47:59] hours to do it
[00:48:01] so I would just say this
[00:48:03] it's definitely not
[00:48:05] going to if you're expecting like
[00:48:07] shocking
[00:48:09] brutal violence or something like that
[00:48:11] it's not that
[00:48:13] but the
[00:48:15] pain that you will feel in these
[00:48:17] performances and what these
[00:48:19] characters are all going through and the
[00:48:21] tension of this movie too
[00:48:23] I definitely think it will be
[00:48:25] maybe just as upsetting
[00:48:27] as something that you
[00:48:29] see where
[00:48:31] you know human lives are being
[00:48:33] exterminated or something like that
[00:48:35] because it's not so much like their lives
[00:48:37] are being exterminated it's more so like
[00:48:39] their dreams and hopes are being
[00:48:41] exterminated and that's just as
[00:48:43] that's just as upsetting
[00:48:45] like it's such a soul crushing
[00:48:47] film oh my god I love the way
[00:48:49] I'm selling this right now like every
[00:48:51] negative emotion possible
[00:48:53] but you need to see it though
[00:48:55] no like that's the thing like
[00:48:57] especially in the trailer it looks like
[00:48:59] it's like visceral
[00:49:01] and exciting to
[00:49:03] watch which is if you're going
[00:49:05] to make a film that's you know this
[00:49:07] arrowing and this
[00:49:09] you know capital I
[00:49:11] important that is the way you
[00:49:13] should do it yeah
[00:49:15] Matt's just selling everyone on the most
[00:49:17] best doom watch of the
[00:49:19] year yeah the feel
[00:49:21] good movie of 2024 people
[00:49:23] you know I've heard some people
[00:49:25] describe this as
[00:49:27] like misery porn
[00:49:29] but I think that
[00:49:31] you know this is an issue and we're
[00:49:33] living in a time right now where
[00:49:35] that is what's necessary
[00:49:37] in order to
[00:49:39] get the message that you need to get across
[00:49:41] across
[00:49:43] so more on that later because
[00:49:45] I do wonder
[00:49:47] if this will make
[00:49:49] any sort of a play for this year's
[00:49:51] award season you know I
[00:49:53] like I have it in the back of my head
[00:49:55] that I could
[00:49:57] see the director's branch going for
[00:49:59] Holland you know that's like one
[00:50:01] of those things where it's like this academy would do
[00:50:03] such a thing like that you know
[00:50:05] but then I wonder well what
[00:50:07] else is there do they go for the editing do
[00:50:09] they go for the cinematography
[00:50:11] maybe not so it is a bit of a
[00:50:13] long shot and that's where I get like really
[00:50:15] I
[00:50:17] I get I get a little
[00:50:19] you know unsure
[00:50:21] about its Oscar prospects because
[00:50:23] this like it feels
[00:50:25] so
[00:50:27] it feels so yes
[00:50:29] like best director absolutely but
[00:50:31] then you're like well what else and
[00:50:33] maybe that's just tough to say right now because
[00:50:35] it's so early in the year yeah
[00:50:37] I keep hoping that this will
[00:50:39] do a number on the Oscars
[00:50:41] this year just based on everything that I've heard about it
[00:50:43] but it's that's
[00:50:45] it's been what since like
[00:50:47] city of God
[00:50:49] that something like that has happened
[00:50:51] oh yeah
[00:50:53] I was going to say because technically they didn't
[00:50:55] submit this remember they didn't they didn't
[00:50:57] select right but that's when it would have been
[00:50:59] eligible right right right
[00:51:01] so that's why that's why
[00:51:03] it's eligible this year for exactly
[00:51:05] yeah yeah but
[00:51:07] it's been a long time since that
[00:51:09] happened it's super rare
[00:51:11] well we'll see
[00:51:13] our next film is a never film that
[00:51:15] premiered at Sundance
[00:51:17] it's going to be coming out from
[00:51:19] Neon pretty soon
[00:51:21] I can't do I have the date here
[00:51:23] I don't have the date here I do apologize
[00:51:25] it's coming out soon very very soon
[00:51:27] it's called handling neon dead
[00:51:29] with a worst
[00:51:31] person in the world reunion here between
[00:51:33] Renata Renzva and Anders
[00:51:35] Danielson Lee
[00:51:37] let's take a look at the trailer for this unique
[00:51:39] zombie horror film
[00:51:45] it's exactly how it feels
[00:51:47] to be safe
[00:51:49] okay
[00:51:51] correct me if I'm wrong
[00:51:53] if you've seen this but
[00:51:55] this movie this trailer
[00:51:57] makes it look like that
[00:51:59] meme of
[00:52:01] this artsy movie like oh the cinematography
[00:52:03] is so great some beautiful shots
[00:52:07] yeah this left me
[00:52:09] a little disappointed
[00:52:11] it's a very intriguing premise
[00:52:13] it's a cast that I like
[00:52:17] I thought the pacing of this
[00:52:19] was so tedious and the
[00:52:21] execution just left me wanting
[00:52:23] so so much more out of it
[00:52:25] the atmosphere is chilling
[00:52:27] there are some memorably grim
[00:52:29] images some unforgettable
[00:52:31] images too
[00:52:33] but this did not hook me
[00:52:35] early enough for me to even
[00:52:37] be on board with it
[00:52:39] you know the whole way through
[00:52:41] I just kind of found myself
[00:52:43] you know going in and out
[00:52:45] constantly throughout this
[00:52:47] this movie
[00:52:49] that was my experience
[00:52:51] Cody Derrick's who saw it had a much different
[00:52:53] experience he liked it a lot more
[00:52:55] than I did
[00:52:57] now maybe that's because
[00:52:59] Cody who watches a lot of horror
[00:53:01] movies found this one
[00:53:03] to be a bit more
[00:53:05] unique in what it's
[00:53:07] trying to do because it does
[00:53:09] deal with
[00:53:11] the actual
[00:53:13] real life implications
[00:53:15] of what would happen if the dead
[00:53:17] did come back to life
[00:53:19] and
[00:53:21] I do also appreciate
[00:53:23] that premise but
[00:53:25] this is a movie that just
[00:53:27] in my opinion it should have been so much better
[00:53:29] than what it turned out to be
[00:53:31] and it frustrates me that
[00:53:33] I don't like this movie as much as I
[00:53:35] want to
[00:53:37] because the trailer definitely makes it look
[00:53:39] like a very unique take
[00:53:41] on the zombie
[00:53:43] mythology and films
[00:53:45] you know that genre
[00:53:47] but
[00:53:49] that difference does make it look like
[00:53:51] a
[00:53:53] not very exciting watch
[00:53:55] no and that's you know like I said
[00:53:57] like I would have been
[00:53:59] okay
[00:54:01] with
[00:54:03] this because this movie
[00:54:05] it's not like a zombie action
[00:54:07] film
[00:54:09] it's not a zombie horror film
[00:54:11] per se like there's no
[00:54:13] jump scares really in this movie
[00:54:15] but
[00:54:17] that kind of somber
[00:54:19] tone is something that also
[00:54:21] should have just appealed to me
[00:54:23] and for some reason
[00:54:25] maybe because the character
[00:54:27] work wasn't strong enough or
[00:54:29] I'm not entirely sure
[00:54:31] it just never hooked me
[00:54:33] early enough to get me fully on board with it
[00:54:35] maybe you guys
[00:54:37] will feel differently though I mean
[00:54:39] I think there's a chance you might feel differently
[00:54:41] I know some people who really did dig it
[00:54:43] also too I gotta just say this
[00:54:45] for the record
[00:54:47] I really thought that Renata Ranzva was going to be
[00:54:49] a much bigger star in the
[00:54:51] aftermath of the worst person in the world
[00:54:53] yeah and while
[00:54:55] it's great to see her popping up in a different man
[00:54:57] another end
[00:54:59] handling you undead
[00:55:01] three years since worst person in the world
[00:55:03] and I really thought that
[00:55:05] she would have gotten like a major
[00:55:07] Hollywood film role
[00:55:09] that would have like catapulted her stardom
[00:55:11] even further but that just hasn't
[00:55:13] happened yet
[00:55:15] I appreciate the direction that she's taking
[00:55:17] but I'm just a little surprised at all
[00:55:19] yeah I agree
[00:55:21] the adoration for worst person in the world
[00:55:23] you would have thought that by now
[00:55:25] she would be far more exposed
[00:55:27] but who knows maybe she's just like
[00:55:29] I just want to rock in the NDC
[00:55:31] for now but I mean it's
[00:55:33] coming she's got a lot of buzzier
[00:55:35] titles than the works
[00:55:37] like let's not
[00:55:39] look I'm not screwed up too much
[00:55:41] like let her cook
[00:55:43] let her cook
[00:55:45] alright
[00:55:47] our second to last trailer here
[00:55:49] is another Sundance title
[00:55:51] seems to be a reoccurring trend here
[00:55:53] coming out June 14 from IFC
[00:55:55] Films called Ghost Light
[00:55:57] starring Keef Koopferre
[00:55:59] and Dolly Deleon
[00:56:01] let's take a look at the trailer for this
[00:56:03] small film
[00:56:05] Daisy has had plenty of chances already
[00:56:07] get out of the street
[00:56:09] are you kidding
[00:56:11] this is her last one did you reach out to the
[00:56:16] therapist I recommended
[00:56:20] am I supposed to go in there or something
[00:56:22] some parents choose to
[00:56:24] it's really up to you
[00:56:26] I'll be back in an hour
[00:56:30] I love
[00:56:32] how long have you been doing skits
[00:56:34] 10 years
[00:56:36] see you later
[00:56:38] meet Mikey for beer
[00:56:40] again
[00:56:42] you know my friend her whole family goes to
[00:56:44] family therapy and they all talk
[00:56:46] about their feelings together
[00:56:48] because she's not the only problem
[00:56:55] hey asshole
[00:56:57] Daisy say hi to mom
[00:56:59] excuse me
[00:57:01] is this a threesome
[00:57:03] it's for a play
[00:57:05] so this does not
[00:57:07] look at all like
[00:57:09] what I was expecting this movie to look like
[00:57:11] so
[00:57:13] I was thrown for a little bit of a loop
[00:57:15] but that said I'm still like
[00:57:17] crazy looking forward to it
[00:57:19] I'm just like glad that my expectations
[00:57:21] have been reset
[00:57:23] what did you think it was going to be out of curiosity
[00:57:25] I thought it was going to look
[00:57:27] a lot more dramatic
[00:57:29] dramatic
[00:57:31] oh ok well here's what I will say
[00:57:33] in regards to that
[00:57:35] the movie is extremely
[00:57:37] dramatic and it withholds
[00:57:39] all of that in the trailer
[00:57:41] ok
[00:57:43] interesting
[00:57:45] interesting
[00:57:47] it's a movie where I remember when I saw it
[00:57:49] at Sundance I just immediately thought to myself
[00:57:51] this is so quintessential
[00:57:53] like indie Sundance
[00:57:55] you know
[00:57:57] the IFC picture
[00:57:59] right it has all those feelings
[00:58:01] of sadness
[00:58:03] and loss
[00:58:05] and this guy who goes on a very
[00:58:07] internalized journey
[00:58:09] where there's levity and he rediscovers
[00:58:11] what's important to him in life
[00:58:13] and you can kind of guess
[00:58:15] maybe how it ends based upon that
[00:58:17] and it's simple
[00:58:19] but it's extremely relatable
[00:58:21] I thought the performances were great
[00:58:23] you know seeing
[00:58:25] a character actor like Keith
[00:58:27] here get a moment like this
[00:58:29] is also really really sweet
[00:58:31] refreshing not to mention too
[00:58:33] his real life family
[00:58:35] is also
[00:58:37] incorporated into this movie
[00:58:39] the girl who plays his daughter
[00:58:41] in this film is his actual daughter
[00:58:43] which only adds to the authenticity
[00:58:45] of the performance then when you watch it
[00:58:47] I thought it was really profound
[00:58:49] tender
[00:58:51] maybe a bit sentimental at times
[00:58:53] but it's very very appealing
[00:58:55] and Dan especially for you
[00:58:57] there's nothing better
[00:58:59] than the healing power of theater
[00:59:01] I was
[00:59:03] crushed
[00:59:05] that I could not fit this
[00:59:07] into my schedule at South by Southwest
[00:59:09] and literally the only reason
[00:59:11] that I let myself be okay with that
[00:59:13] was because I knew that IFC had
[00:59:15] it for distribution and that it wouldn't be long before
[00:59:17] I would get to see it
[00:59:19] so
[00:59:21] I'm very looking forward to this
[00:59:23] and looking forward to
[00:59:25] maybe
[00:59:27] another potential Oscar
[00:59:29] run for Dolly Dillion
[00:59:31] no I don't think so
[00:59:35] sorry
[00:59:37] shot that down so good
[00:59:39] you know sometimes I got it
[00:59:41] called like I see it
[00:59:45] but Chris Hemsworth has Dementis on the other hand
[00:59:47] haha oh please
[00:59:49] please like in the grand
[00:59:51] tradition of such
[00:59:53] wild eyed performances
[00:59:55] as Johnny Depp and compared to the Caribbean
[00:59:57] please let it happen
[00:59:59] yes
[01:00:01] alright and then our final trailer here
[01:00:03] is
[01:00:05] once again another Sundance film
[01:00:07] being released in June
[01:00:09] June is just like the dropping point
[01:00:11] for all these indie films but I love it
[01:00:13] from Magnolia Pictures this is
[01:00:15] Delma starring
[01:00:17] June Squibb as everyone's
[01:00:19] favorite action heroine of
[01:00:21] 2024 let's take a look at the trailer
[01:00:23] for this one
[01:00:25] what's your plan for the day?
[01:00:27] the usual
[01:00:29] hello?
[01:00:31] daddy? you sound so strange
[01:00:33] I'm in jail
[01:00:35] oh my god
[01:00:40] $3,000
[01:00:42] how did you think this was real?
[01:00:44] mom you thought it was real too
[01:00:46] oh my god she was very convincing
[01:00:48] I'm your mother we were all scared
[01:00:50] I wasn't quite as scared just
[01:00:52] for the record
[01:00:56] no use
[01:00:58] contact people at random using telephone
[01:01:00] listings and social networking sites
[01:01:02] like facebook? sure
[01:01:04] what should the Zuckenborg be able to fix this?
[01:01:06] what about my money?
[01:01:08] am I supposed to just let them have it?
[01:01:12] I'm gonna get a pass
[01:01:14] I need a ride
[01:01:20] please
[01:01:22] give me June Squibb and Jason Statham
[01:01:24] teaming up together to take these
[01:01:26] internet scammers down
[01:01:28] awesome if I remember correctly
[01:01:30] when we reviewed the beekeeper
[01:01:32] maybe I'm wrong about this
[01:01:34] but hadn't had some dance already
[01:01:36] happened or not yet?
[01:01:38] I think so
[01:01:40] then I do apologize
[01:01:42] for not making this comparison
[01:01:44] sooner
[01:01:46] because I would have told you
[01:01:48] that if there was a movie this year
[01:01:50] about somebody who takes their revenge
[01:01:52] against scamming telemarketers
[01:01:54] I would have said watch Delman
[01:01:56] instead of the beekeeper
[01:01:58] hey don't
[01:02:00] don't pit two queens against each other
[01:02:02] truly
[01:02:04] the queen bee
[01:02:06] protect the hive
[01:02:08] yes the hive
[01:02:10] protect the hive damn it
[01:02:12] okay but in all seriousness
[01:02:14] you have the late Richard Roundtree
[01:02:16] who is just such a delight
[01:02:18] alongside Jude Squibb
[01:02:20] who
[01:02:22] at age 94 years old
[01:02:24] this is a showcase role
[01:02:26] for her she's magnificent
[01:02:28] in it you can tell from the trailer
[01:02:30] alone it's hilarious
[01:02:32] the way that this movie is directed
[01:02:34] by Josh Margolin
[01:02:36] he
[01:02:38] shoots it though as if it's like
[01:02:40] a mission impossible action
[01:02:42] spy thriller
[01:02:44] in terms of the editing
[01:02:46] and the way it just unfolds
[01:02:48] but yet it's like
[01:02:50] her doing the most mundane
[01:02:52] simplest tasks
[01:02:54] it's just like filmed for
[01:02:56] maximalist energy
[01:02:58] and I loved that approach for it so
[01:03:00] so much it's hilarious
[01:03:02] and supporting players here
[01:03:04] I do want to also highlight
[01:03:06] the young Fred Hedginger
[01:03:08] who you guys probably
[01:03:10] remember from
[01:03:12] a supporting role he had in 8th grade
[01:03:14] yeah he looks
[01:03:16] really really different now
[01:03:18] Navadis in his mid 20s
[01:03:20] he was like in the white lotus
[01:03:22] that's what I remember from
[01:03:24] I didn't even remember him in 8th grade
[01:03:26] holy shit
[01:03:28] well he was a little kid
[01:03:30] in that movie so
[01:03:32] that's wild but yeah
[01:03:34] he's so sweet and charming in this movie
[01:03:36] alongside June Squibb
[01:03:38] you know
[01:03:40] I don't know how much longer we have with June Squibb
[01:03:42] but if this was
[01:03:44] the way for her to go out
[01:03:46] it would be such a way to go out
[01:03:48] Matt don't you be putting that
[01:03:50] black mark on June Squibb
[01:03:52] I know I'm just saying
[01:03:54] don't tempt fate here
[01:03:56] I understand I'm just saying
[01:03:58] it's a high point in
[01:04:00] a very very lovely career
[01:04:02] my body is ready
[01:04:04] for this movie I am
[01:04:06] so here for it
[01:04:08] alright let's go over
[01:04:10] now the polls now that we're done with
[01:04:12] trailers for this week
[01:04:14] for the release of
[01:04:16] Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
[01:04:18] we asked everyone on the show
[01:04:20] what is their favorite
[01:04:22] Planet of the Apes film
[01:04:24] 10 films in the entire
[01:04:26] franchise which one is your
[01:04:28] favorite
[01:04:30] Gio
[01:04:32] I've not seen every single one of the
[01:04:34] G1's so that kind of
[01:04:36] limits my selection here
[01:04:38] but I will say I'll never forget when I watch
[01:04:40] Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
[01:04:42] and just thinking that
[01:04:44] a movie about monkeys could be this
[01:04:46] meditative and deep and
[01:04:48] for a blockbuster on this scale
[01:04:50] Matt Reeves directed the shit out of it
[01:04:52] and Jason Isaacs
[01:04:54] underrated I'm glad he got it
[01:04:56] in a moment in Oppenheimer last year
[01:04:58] but like he's so good at that movie
[01:05:00] anytime also Gary Oldman's a bad guy
[01:05:02] Jason Isaacs
[01:05:04] Jason Clark
[01:05:06] I'm like
[01:05:08] Malfoy
[01:05:10] Wait Jason Isaacs
[01:05:12] what?
[01:05:14] I get my Jason's confused Jason Clark everyone
[01:05:16] both Jason are great
[01:05:18] but Jason Clark
[01:05:20] and Gary Oldman is great always
[01:05:22] as a villain and Andy Serkis
[01:05:24] I think that's just maybe one of his top
[01:05:26] three performances ever and Dawn
[01:05:28] he's just unreal the physicality of it
[01:05:30] everything he brings with his facial
[01:05:32] emoting
[01:05:34] I love Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
[01:05:36] War was pretty good it doesn't reach
[01:05:38] that high for me as Dawn but
[01:05:40] it's still very good but
[01:05:42] Dawn is top tier
[01:05:44] Dan?
[01:05:46] I really
[01:05:48] loved Rise of the Planet of the Apes
[01:05:50] I think that's how you do a reboot
[01:05:52] if you're going to do it I think it's pretty spectacular
[01:05:54] but there is something that
[01:05:56] is really special about the original
[01:05:58] Planet of the Apes it is
[01:06:00] a much weirder movie
[01:06:02] than you may imagine
[01:06:04] and
[01:06:06] it's so
[01:06:08] unique I
[01:06:10] love it a lot
[01:06:12] I will say that
[01:06:14] originally
[01:06:16] I
[01:06:18] would have said War for the Planet of the Apes
[01:06:20] but upon a rewatch
[01:06:22] I have now moved on to the Planet of the Apes
[01:06:24] into that slot
[01:06:26] the OG is still
[01:06:28] pretty fantastic though
[01:06:30] can't say the same about the sequels that
[01:06:32] followed after
[01:06:34] I also think too because people have been asking
[01:06:36] me this lately so I'll say this
[01:06:38] in terms of my ranking of the last four films
[01:06:40] now I would say Dawn for the Planet of the Apes
[01:06:42] War for the Planet of the Apes
[01:06:44] Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
[01:06:46] and then Rise of the Planet of the Apes
[01:06:48] but they're all great
[01:06:50] just because I have Rise in the fourth slot
[01:06:52] does not mean that Rise is
[01:06:54] not a great film
[01:06:56] I think Rise is even better
[01:06:58] upon rewatches
[01:07:00] because I remember when we reviewed that during the
[01:07:02] pandemic during lockdown
[01:07:04] and I was like holy shit this movie still holds up
[01:07:06] we're like really well
[01:07:08] and it's really because of Circus
[01:07:10] like
[01:07:12] ugh
[01:07:14] so good
[01:07:16] should have gotten an Oscar
[01:07:18] no
[01:07:20] now he will for the Planet of the Apes
[01:07:22] oh no
[01:07:24] please let's not
[01:07:26] encourage Peter Jackson
[01:07:28] with this
[01:07:30] go back to making your documentaries
[01:07:32] Peter please
[01:07:34] make a low budget horror again
[01:07:36] alright here's the ranking from the
[01:07:38] NBP film community and how they
[01:07:40] ranked all ten of these films
[01:07:42] starting off with at
[01:07:44] number ten
[01:07:46] battle
[01:07:48] for the Planet of the Apes
[01:07:50] which I'm not surprised to see it in that slot to be honest with you
[01:07:54] number nine beneath the Planet of the Apes
[01:07:58] which is one that I have not seen
[01:08:02] number eight is Tim Burton's
[01:08:04] 2001 remake
[01:08:06] of Planet of the Apes
[01:08:08] god I always forget that existed
[01:08:10] yeah
[01:08:12] it has merits like it has
[01:08:14] I think it has fun performances
[01:08:16] from Paul G. Amati
[01:08:18] Tim Roth, Michael Clark Duncan
[01:08:20] yeah okay I can give you that
[01:08:22] the make up work is extraordinary
[01:08:24] so it was like the production design
[01:08:26] but
[01:08:28] ugh god
[01:08:30] yeah it's not great
[01:08:32] it's not good
[01:08:34] that was a film that I wondered when I rewatched it
[01:08:36] oh maybe this has gotten better with time
[01:08:38] and you know this is not as bad as I remember it being
[01:08:40] no it's still pretty bad
[01:08:42] number seven
[01:08:44] conquest of the Planet of the Apes
[01:08:48] number six
[01:08:50] I mean I'll tell you this I saw a lot of people
[01:08:52] on social media this past week
[01:08:54] re-evaluating this one
[01:08:56] and I'm not surprised to see that it is the highest
[01:08:58] of the OG sequels
[01:09:00] number six is escape from the Planet of the Apes
[01:09:04] number five
[01:09:06] is kingdom
[01:09:08] of the Planet of the Apes
[01:09:10] not bad for the one that just came out
[01:09:12] yeah fair
[01:09:14] I think it's pretty good
[01:09:16] number four is
[01:09:18] rise of the Planet of the Apes
[01:09:22] number three
[01:09:26] the original Planet of the Apes
[01:09:28] oh interesting
[01:09:30] number two
[01:09:32] war for the Planet of the Apes
[01:09:34] and number one
[01:09:36] dawn of the Planet of the Apes
[01:09:38] yeah
[01:09:40] dawn is really freaking good
[01:09:42] so cool
[01:09:44] and now for this week's poll
[01:09:46] for the release of John Krasinski's
[01:09:48] if
[01:09:50] which is your favorite family
[01:09:52] film
[01:09:54] from a serious film director
[01:09:56] I don't know
[01:09:58] that's a tricky one
[01:10:00] you know since we're talking
[01:10:02] about Furiosa
[01:10:04] I mean this same guy who's doing Mad Max
[01:10:06] has made happy feed in waves
[01:10:08] well he did
[01:10:10] direct babe he just produced
[01:10:12] oh yeah but he did do babe pig in the city
[01:10:14] yes that he did
[01:10:16] so I mean that's always a fun
[01:10:18] which I agree that might be like the hardest
[01:10:20] pivot
[01:10:22] I've never seen any filmmaker
[01:10:24] yeah
[01:10:26] when I look at this list
[01:10:28] there are some hard pivots on here
[01:10:30] don't get me wrong
[01:10:32] not all of them are great
[01:10:34] I'll go with
[01:10:36] an underrated one now
[01:10:38] Pete's Dragon David Lowry
[01:10:40] that's a good movie
[01:10:42] I actually
[01:10:44] don't really dig most of these live action Disney remakes
[01:10:46] but the Pete's Dragon remake
[01:10:48] that Lowry did was good
[01:10:50] probably one of the few like one for you one for me
[01:10:52] is that like actually is like alright
[01:10:54] yeah that's good
[01:10:56] there was a one to
[01:10:58] punch of
[01:11:00] literary adaptations that Warner Brothers released
[01:11:02] in the 1990s
[01:11:04] Alfonso Corone's version of A Little Princess
[01:11:06] and Agnes Cahalan's
[01:11:08] version of The Secret Garden
[01:11:10] that's just like ridiculously good
[01:11:12] oh you know what
[01:11:14] I forgot to add that as an option here
[01:11:16] I'm gonna add that now
[01:11:18] The Secret Garden
[01:11:20] it is an ideal adaptation of that book
[01:11:22] it's so good
[01:11:24] man I forgot
[01:11:26] I haven't seen that movie since I was a kid
[01:11:28] yeah that's been a while
[01:11:30] you know speaking of like
[01:11:32] could you say Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Ascumance
[01:11:34] a kids movie because like
[01:11:36] yeah that's also just like
[01:11:38] unreal like the best one in the series
[01:11:40] just like Corone is just
[01:11:42] making that like on 11
[01:11:44] it's so good
[01:11:46] have you guys been surprised by the reactions to If so far
[01:11:48] or are you still trepidatious
[01:11:50] I haven't really looked
[01:11:52] okay
[01:11:54] I'm going in with just
[01:11:56] I'm not trying to buy into it I don't know if I'm gonna
[01:11:58] dig If like that we'll see
[01:12:00] I do like the cast it's
[01:12:02] pretty stacked voice acting cast
[01:12:04] of just like everyone's in this movie
[01:12:06] it does you know
[01:12:08] the common theme I'm seeing across the reactions
[01:12:10] is that it's emotional and
[01:12:12] has people crying and it's like
[01:12:14] very heartfelt so
[01:12:16] you know if it manages
[01:12:18] to do that then
[01:12:20] these other trailers I think
[01:12:22] I'll be very impressed
[01:12:24] well you know I mean there could be something
[01:12:26] that the trailers were holding back from
[01:12:28] yeah sure yeah happens all the
[01:12:30] time where certain films creep up
[01:12:32] on you and you're like wow I did not expect that to be as
[01:12:34] powerful as it was
[01:12:36] oh shout out to
[01:12:38] on this list to Janie DeVito's Matilda
[01:12:40] oh yes
[01:12:42] so good
[01:12:44] love that movie
[01:12:46] I feel like
[01:12:48] quote-unquote serious because I used the term
[01:12:50] serious in my question here
[01:12:52] it's loose it's a loose term
[01:12:54] alright okay
[01:12:56] I got wondering I guess you could count
[01:12:58] Altman's Popeye
[01:13:00] I do have that on here too
[01:13:02] I enjoyed Popeye
[01:13:04] you know I watched that when I was
[01:13:06] young and I just grew up like
[01:13:08] watching the cartoons with my dad like 3 in the morning
[01:13:10] before he went to work so
[01:13:12] she was at like the gym pumping iron he's got a poster
[01:13:14] of Popeye like
[01:13:16] I just have my spinach
[01:13:18] right before that's when we worked out everyone
[01:13:20] I can't have a spinach
[01:13:22] I squeeze that rare with my hands
[01:13:24] you know what I can see it Gio I can see it
[01:13:28] also two millions
[01:13:30] Janie Boyle good movie
[01:13:32] excellent movie
[01:13:34] if you have not watched that movie
[01:13:36] you need to watch it
[01:13:38] agreed
[01:13:40] there's some good films here I tried to pick good ones
[01:13:44] and then there's some not so good ones
[01:13:46] you know hi Jack
[01:13:48] but you know
[01:13:50] interesting list
[01:13:52] so if coming out this week
[01:13:54] John Krasinski Ryan Reynolds
[01:13:56] I guess go see it
[01:13:58] I don't know
[01:14:00] you have kids why not
[01:14:02] yeah you've got the kids
[01:14:04] and now let's head on over to
[01:14:06] the MVP film community let's see what they had
[01:14:08] to ask us for this week's episode
[01:14:12] coming up on 5 minute news
[01:14:14] I'm Anthony Davis
[01:14:16] you might think it's partisan
[01:14:18] because maybe it's critical of one side
[01:14:20] or the other but it's not
[01:14:22] just the truth and I think that's also
[01:14:24] something that's kind of unusual for
[01:14:26] Americans listening to the radio
[01:14:28] or to podcasts because
[01:14:30] the news landscape in the states
[01:14:32] has been so partisan
[01:14:34] for so many decades
[01:14:36] so 5 minute news is
[01:14:38] verified truthful independent
[01:14:40] unbiased and essential
[01:14:42] world news daily
[01:14:44] S2S movie reviews
[01:14:48] what's your favorite movie with mother
[01:14:50] mom or mommy in the title
[01:14:52] add an exclamation
[01:14:54] point and I'll say mother
[01:14:56] yeah
[01:14:58] her thoughts
[01:15:00] point to that immediately
[01:15:02] goodnight mommy
[01:15:04] very very very good one
[01:15:06] yeah
[01:15:08] don't tell mom the babysitter is dead
[01:15:10] these are all originals
[01:15:12] by the way I am not talking about these remakes
[01:15:14] that have come out for these recently
[01:15:16] god
[01:15:18] Max Sloth in honor of mother's
[01:15:20] day favorite cinematic
[01:15:22] mothers
[01:15:24] Catherine Hepburn is Eleanor
[01:15:26] of Aquitaine in the lion and winter
[01:15:28] baby
[01:15:30] the most disinterested parent
[01:15:32] ever
[01:15:34] I fucking love that movie so much
[01:15:36] I don't know
[01:15:38] I really don't know Matt who are you picking
[01:15:40] I need some ideas
[01:15:42] Catherine Keener and where the wild things
[01:15:44] are
[01:15:46] that's a great one
[01:15:48] also on our list
[01:15:50] for the poll this week too
[01:15:52] yeah
[01:15:54] Sally Field and forest gump
[01:15:56] did they have to be good
[01:15:58] characters is my question
[01:16:00] what do you mean
[01:16:02] like do they have to be
[01:16:04] like an a b evil mom
[01:16:06] are you saying mother got the lens
[01:16:08] tangled because yes that counts
[01:16:10] I was thinking that mother knows best
[01:16:12] mother knows best
[01:16:14] mother knows best
[01:16:16] yes
[01:16:18] Michelle Yeo and everything
[01:16:20] where all once comes to mind
[01:16:22] oh yeah
[01:16:24] you tried
[01:16:26] Linda Hamilton terminator
[01:16:28] too she just wants to protect her son
[01:16:30] oh yes
[01:16:32] I mean we got to
[01:16:34] say Sigourney weaver in aliens
[01:16:36] right like that's
[01:16:38] get away from her you bitch
[01:16:42] look it's recent Rebecca first and
[01:16:44] and dude yeah
[01:16:46] is the reverend mother
[01:16:48] that is true
[01:16:50] it's a good point
[01:16:52] Josie DeMarco
[01:16:54] hypothetically if Palo Sorrentino's
[01:16:56] Parfenope which is
[01:16:58] acquired by A24 wins the palm door
[01:17:00] or even the grand prix
[01:17:02] or any other major prize
[01:17:04] do you think it is possible that
[01:17:06] A24 will pivot from sing sing
[01:17:08] to Parfenope as their main awards
[01:17:10] push
[01:17:12] I say why can't they do both
[01:17:14] yeah
[01:17:16] why not both
[01:17:18] I still think sing sing might have
[01:17:20] a little bit of an edge because I feel like that's just
[01:17:22] a crowd pleasing movie that anyone
[01:17:24] can fall in love with
[01:17:26] from what I've heard and like
[01:17:28] the possibilities of just you know
[01:17:30] talking about bringing that cast to like go to SAG
[01:17:32] screenings and just
[01:17:34] the goodwill behind it I can see
[01:17:36] being far greater but I don't know I mean yeah
[01:17:38] like you guys said why not both like A24
[01:17:40] has got a lot of juice right now so
[01:17:42] Keith at Kite Lou
[01:17:44] I understand
[01:17:46] Dune Part 2 is to presumed early
[01:17:48] frontrunner for best visual effects
[01:17:50] but is there a world
[01:17:52] where Kingdom of the Plane of the Apes could snatch
[01:17:54] to win in this category for its long overdue
[01:17:56] narrative especially since Dune
[01:17:58] already won this award for Part 1
[01:18:00] that's not a narrative
[01:18:02] it's they don't like those movies enough
[01:18:04] to give them the award
[01:18:06] like flat out
[01:18:08] I think the visual effects work is
[01:18:10] really good in Kingdom of the Plane of the Apes
[01:18:12] but still there's a part of me
[01:18:14] that doesn't think it reaches
[01:18:16] some of the highs of the previous
[01:18:18] two films
[01:18:20] I just don't know you watch
[01:18:22] Dune and the VFX
[01:18:24] works to see so seamless
[01:18:26] in that movie like there's moments where I'm watching Kingdom of the Plane of the Apes
[01:18:28] and like when the
[01:18:30] main girl may or whatever
[01:18:32] is standing next to some of
[01:18:34] the chimps I'm like you can tell
[01:18:36] compared to like when is the orangutan
[01:18:38] the orangutan with the fur and everything I'm like this is scary
[01:18:40] how real looks
[01:18:42] and then other times I'm like yeah it's
[01:18:44] not a real creature
[01:18:46] next to her whereas I'm watching Dune
[01:18:48] and everything on that is like no they were in Arrakis
[01:18:50] when they filmed that
[01:18:52] those ornthopters those are real
[01:18:54] like it's not a real work by
[01:18:56] the Dune VFX team
[01:18:58] I don't see why they probably won't again
[01:19:00] I do agree I think Dune has
[01:19:02] more immersive visual effects
[01:19:04] work that makes you forget
[01:19:06] what's visual effects and what's captured in camera
[01:19:08] but the work in Kingdom
[01:19:10] is on such a scale that
[01:19:12] we haven't seen in a major
[01:19:14] theatrical release since Avatar the way of water
[01:19:16] I do wonder if it could just win
[01:19:18] with this
[01:19:20] mentality of well more is more
[01:19:22] yeah and with Dune
[01:19:24] I think the only
[01:19:26] VFX in that movie that
[01:19:28] comes off is like okay is like
[01:19:30] the crowd shots when it's
[01:19:32] like yeah that was
[01:19:34] those were rough but I will say
[01:19:36] like if Dune most likely
[01:19:38] ends up being a best picture
[01:19:40] nominee that kind of gives it a little bit
[01:19:42] of an edge compared to keeping the plan of the game
[01:19:44] which will not be nominated for best
[01:19:46] picture I can tell you that right now
[01:19:48] alright
[01:19:50] Dan Allen is I saw the TV
[01:19:52] going to go down in history as one of the great coming
[01:19:54] of age films
[01:19:56] would you call it a coming
[01:19:58] of age film yeah that's so
[01:20:00] tricky because like I don't
[01:20:02] know that it really
[01:20:04] is a coming of age
[01:20:06] it's almost an anti coming
[01:20:08] of age film yeah
[01:20:10] yeah I mean
[01:20:12] it's about dysphoria
[01:20:14] I feel so that film will get
[01:20:16] more of a cold following like if you
[01:20:18] seen like the reactions for it it's
[01:20:20] like of course like critically
[01:20:22] being praised and in my opinion as it
[01:20:24] should I think it's phenomenal work
[01:20:26] like you go around to me and see the audience reaction
[01:20:28] it's like a 30 something
[01:20:30] like I feel like most general audiences
[01:20:32] are going to be like what is this movie
[01:20:34] there's a lot of like the horror
[01:20:36] aspects and how the metaphor
[01:20:38] cool aspects to it are really balancing
[01:20:40] out and I feel like if you just like hey
[01:20:42] mom let's watch this they're going to be like
[01:20:44] what are you making me
[01:20:46] what is this movie I would never
[01:20:48] I would never show this to my mom to be
[01:20:50] yeah same yeah
[01:20:52] circle we're like oh we totally
[01:20:54] vibe with it we totally understand
[01:20:56] what the film is trying to do and say
[01:20:58] yeah I think that it like as far
[01:21:00] as that goes like I think it will
[01:21:02] be for a very
[01:21:04] small subset of
[01:21:06] the population but those
[01:21:08] who do love it and find that connection
[01:21:10] to it it will be
[01:21:12] like a super cult classic
[01:21:14] yeah yeah I said that
[01:21:16] out of Sundance I knew
[01:21:18] right away that not
[01:21:20] everyone was going to vibe with this but those who
[01:21:22] did especially
[01:21:24] you know I could see from the trans community
[01:21:26] as well like I could see this
[01:21:28] having a really special place
[01:21:30] in a lot of people's hearts
[01:21:32] and I could see
[01:21:34] it speaking to people
[01:21:36] in a way that
[01:21:38] it's like I can acknowledge
[01:21:40] that it has the power to speak to people but I could
[01:21:42] never possibly understand
[01:21:44] what that dialogue
[01:21:46] that internal dialogue is like
[01:21:48] and I but
[01:21:50] you know it's like one of those things where
[01:21:52] you know even though it wasn't necessarily
[01:21:54] quote unquote for me
[01:21:56] I
[01:21:58] recognize wholeheartedly
[01:22:00] it's power
[01:22:02] ooh ooh Edwin Arroz
[01:22:04] what's your opinion on
[01:22:06] Paul Schrader wanting to cast Kevin Spacius
[01:22:08] and Atra?
[01:22:10] Alright
[01:22:12] here's my thing
[01:22:14] bad terrible
[01:22:16] but I think the allure of
[01:22:18] Paul Schrader as an individual
[01:22:20] and his mind as like a true artist
[01:22:22] is where you know
[01:22:24] this is a guy who I'll have takes like this or like
[01:22:26] after the passing of
[01:22:28] Roger Corman
[01:22:30] a film legend this guy is like setting shots
[01:22:32] on Facebook
[01:22:34] but also someone who's very much
[01:22:36] liberal mindset of like pro-trans
[01:22:38] pro gay like
[01:22:40] what he speaks out politically like it's just a clash
[01:22:42] of ideas in his mind
[01:22:44] and I think that's what makes him as a fascinating
[01:22:46] artist he isn't pandering
[01:22:48] to anyone and
[01:22:50] it might not entirely be the most
[01:22:52] always appropriate way to
[01:22:54] I don't know tell the stories
[01:22:56] or maybe you know
[01:22:58] express your ideas but I think as
[01:23:00] an artist he's very unwavering
[01:23:02] and I think that's probably what
[01:23:04] has made Paul Schrader
[01:23:06] a very prominent figure
[01:23:08] especially in the film circle for all these
[01:23:10] decades later like this guy is like
[01:23:12] the characters he writes in his movie of
[01:23:14] the guy writing in the textbook
[01:23:16] of like the tortured mind he's
[01:23:18] practically back to a degree in real life
[01:23:20] I mean the way I see it is
[01:23:22] I
[01:23:24] yeah I thought the Roger Corman
[01:23:26] thing was extremely distasteful
[01:23:28] I read his reasoning
[01:23:30] on the Casey
[01:23:32] Spacey casting
[01:23:34] you know based on the fact that he
[01:23:36] wasn't technically indicted and so because
[01:23:38] of that he's
[01:23:40] technically guilty in the eyes of the law
[01:23:42] I'm sorry not guilty excuse me
[01:23:44] maybe not in the eyes of the law
[01:23:46] and so you know
[01:23:48] his feeling is that
[01:23:52] this is not a problem based on my
[01:23:54] moral beliefs and if there's one thing I will
[01:23:56] give credit to Paul Schrader on
[01:23:58] exactly what you're saying Gio is that
[01:24:00] you may not always agree with him
[01:24:02] but
[01:24:04] he stands very firm
[01:24:06] in what he believes in
[01:24:08] and he's not afraid to speak his mind
[01:24:10] and I think that part of the reason why
[01:24:12] he's still so beloved not just the movies that he makes
[01:24:14] I do think he has like this kind of
[01:24:16] old grandpa feeling
[01:24:18] that you got like when
[01:24:20] you know you're at Christmas dinner or something
[01:24:22] and grandpa's going off on something
[01:24:24] politically incorrect on the way things once were
[01:24:26] back in his day and you're like
[01:24:28] oh there he goes again like just let him
[01:24:30] just let him go you know
[01:24:32] and I think that's how
[01:24:34] a lot of people view Paul Schrader
[01:24:36] he's like the epitome of
[01:24:38] I may not ever agree
[01:24:40] with what you have to say but I will defend to the death
[01:24:42] you're right to say it
[01:24:44] also he's like almost 80
[01:24:46] I don't know what people are expecting
[01:24:48] if you want some like pure
[01:24:50] social justice warrior type of individual
[01:24:52] this guy is from a whole different generation
[01:24:54] the fact that some of the
[01:24:56] beliefs he has are actually
[01:24:58] very much lenient to what is now
[01:25:00] believed by us
[01:25:02] in terms of
[01:25:04] identity and rights
[01:25:06] and very serious political issues is even
[01:25:08] surprising at all I'ma be honest
[01:25:10] well he's got a new film coming out
[01:25:12] in a couple of days here
[01:25:14] on May 17th we're premier
[01:25:16] of O Canada at Cannes
[01:25:18] Richard Gere, Uma Thurman and Jacob Elordi
[01:25:20] so
[01:25:22] I don't know if like these recent
[01:25:24] social media posts
[01:25:26] will make people
[01:25:28] feel one way about him or the other
[01:25:30] when they're reviewing this
[01:25:32] I'll say this
[01:25:34] if about the whole
[01:25:36] space playing Sinatra thing
[01:25:38] like have you all seen
[01:25:40] beyond the sea
[01:25:42] yeah
[01:25:44] I don't need
[01:25:46] I don't need Kevin Spacey to play
[01:25:48] Frank Sinatra I really
[01:25:50] really don't
[01:25:52] also speaking of ICD-TV glow a lot
[01:25:54] Paul Schrader big ICD-TV
[01:25:56] glow fan wrote a glowing
[01:25:58] review on facebook about that movie
[01:26:00] no pun intended
[01:26:02] oh wow okay
[01:26:04] you see what you did
[01:26:06] you see what you did sir
[01:26:08] alright and then our final question
[01:26:10] for this week's episode
[01:26:12] from Josie DeMarco in honor
[01:26:14] of Mother's Day what are your favorite
[01:26:16] birth scenes in a movie
[01:26:18] birth scenes
[01:26:20] yes
[01:26:22] just get traumatic pieces of a woman
[01:26:24] like oh my god that opening sequence
[01:26:26] I mean
[01:26:28] I will say the decision
[01:26:30] to shoot that all in one take was
[01:26:32] impressive impressive for Vanessa Kirby's
[01:26:34] performance impressive in cinematography
[01:26:36] can I say
[01:26:38] spoiler immaculate
[01:26:42] happy Mother's Day
[01:26:46] I don't know why this is the first thing
[01:26:48] that's coming to mind for me right now
[01:26:50] I have a couple
[01:26:52] but the first one that comes to mind
[01:26:54] is the literally
[01:26:56] opening POV shot of Bo's
[01:26:58] afraid oh god
[01:27:00] yeah oh I
[01:27:02] yeah the sound design
[01:27:04] the
[01:27:06] startling moment of
[01:27:08] the slap to the title card
[01:27:10] yeah
[01:27:12] yeah that scene
[01:27:14] holy shit incredible
[01:27:16] the other one that I immediately thought of was
[01:27:18] Katherine Heigl yelling at stuff
[01:27:20] yeah that
[01:27:22] yeah that's
[01:27:24] iconic for
[01:27:26] for a reason
[01:27:28] I'm glad you said that one
[01:27:30] but you know Matt you just saw it
[01:27:32] the opening sequence of Babes
[01:27:34] is
[01:27:36] hilarious
[01:27:38] oh yeah her crawling on the ground
[01:27:40] everything yeah I don't want to give
[01:27:42] birth
[01:27:44] so funny
[01:27:46] they bring in the wheelchair
[01:27:48] and go like we'll help you up
[01:27:50] no no let me be
[01:27:54] I really can't wait for
[01:27:56] everyone to see it because it's
[01:27:58] so funny it was really
[01:28:00] funny I loved it
[01:28:06] I'm trying to think what else what else comes to mind
[01:28:08] what else comes to mind
[01:28:10] what about the squid berf
[01:28:12] and men in black
[01:28:14] Tommy Lee Jones' line writing
[01:28:16] congratulations it's
[01:28:18] squid
[01:28:20] thanks
[01:28:26] oh
[01:28:28] yeah that's good
[01:28:30] the fly
[01:28:32] the Cronenberg version
[01:28:34] how much of are we
[01:28:36] which just mentioned
[01:28:38] these like most painful
[01:28:40] birds to watch on screen and then
[01:28:42] birth scenes in cinema are not usually
[01:28:44] happy I was going to say
[01:28:46] they're also not
[01:28:48] un-painful Gio
[01:28:50] okay I mean fair
[01:28:52] but you know what another one that just came to mind
[01:28:54] the
[01:28:56] the oneer and children of men
[01:28:58] oh
[01:29:00] do you remember how incredible
[01:29:02] the CGI was on that baby
[01:29:04] in that scene
[01:29:06] yeah
[01:29:08] amazing what a movie
[01:29:10] what a great note to end on
[01:29:12] because I have to go to
[01:29:14] I have to go to the airport so
[01:29:16] yes
[01:29:18] alright guys I won't be talking to you all
[01:29:20] for a little bit but
[01:29:22] I hope you enjoy
[01:29:24] the next couple of releases that we have here
[01:29:26] with Garfield, If,
[01:29:28] Furiosa obviously
[01:29:30] we're going to try and do some
[01:29:32] unique for Furiosa I don't know if it's going to work out
[01:29:34] but I'm getting
[01:29:36] in on that Saturday a little too late
[01:29:38] so Josh and I are going to record our own
[01:29:40] review of it
[01:29:42] I have opened it up to the MVP team if anybody wants
[01:29:44] to like send me a recording
[01:29:46] of your thoughts
[01:29:48] so this way everybody can like kind of get their say
[01:29:50] about what they feel about it
[01:29:52] I'm happy to
[01:29:54] splice all that together
[01:29:56] put that into the review and
[01:29:58] this way the audience can also then
[01:30:00] get an appreciation for what we all think
[01:30:02] about it because I know this is a very anticipated
[01:30:04] movie for a lot of people so
[01:30:06] with that said
[01:30:08] I really
[01:30:10] I really hope I get all the tickets
[01:30:12] that I want and I'm going to miss you all
[01:30:14] we're manifesting it
