Starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, this was clearly a movie that held the hopes and dreams of many people тАФ from the director to the stars to the crew. The question is whether all that effort came to anything.

[00:00:15] Hi, this is Asim. This is Sujoy. This is Amritha. And you're listening to Khandaan, a Bollywood

[00:00:20] Podcast about the three main Khans of the Hindi film industry. Amir, Salman, and Shahrukh.

[00:00:26] Hi, you're listening to Khandaan, a Bollywood Podcast regular feed. Thank you so much for

[00:00:31] your support over the years. We now have a Patreon channel with bonus content and exclusive

[00:00:36] merch for those of you who would like to support us. Every dollar goes towards creating more

[00:00:41] and better content. Visit us at patreon.com slash Khandaan Podcast.

[00:00:48] Hi, and welcome to a new episode of Khandaan Podcast. My name is Asim Brani, and I'm joined

[00:00:52] with my lovely co-host Amritha and Sujoy. Hey, Amritha. Hey, Sujoy.

[00:00:56] Hey, everybody.

[00:00:57] Hello.

[00:00:59] We were just having a huge religious discussion with Sujoy. Sujoy, do you want to continue that

[00:01:04] discussion?

[00:01:06] It's just Asim being very ROP against me.

[00:01:12] And my people.

[00:01:14] What's going on, Sujoy? What's going on in your house at the moment?

[00:01:17] I mean, I'm just exhausted by a lot of puja attendants, basically. I won't say if it's

[00:01:30] against my wishes or not, but I've been dragged into devotion.

[00:01:37] Yeah.

[00:01:38] Because the way you were explaining it to me...

[00:01:43] Because the way you were explaining it to me, it felt like when, you know, like Hrithik

[00:01:46] Roshan and Kareena wake up Kajol and Shahrukh in Kabhi Burshi Gabhi Gham with their puja

[00:01:51] like super early and they're like, ah, where are you?

[00:01:54] Who's the song?

[00:01:57] Yeah.

[00:01:58] That's a very pretty picture that you have painted.

[00:02:01] It's nothing like that.

[00:02:03] It's a lot more intense and aggressive.

[00:02:06] Yeah.

[00:02:06] Aggressive?

[00:02:07] Wow.

[00:02:08] Yeah.

[00:02:09] Yeah.

[00:02:10] I've been waking up at 5, 6 a.m.

[00:02:13] It's nuts.

[00:02:14] Okay.

[00:02:15] Great.

[00:02:15] And not in a fun way.

[00:02:17] That's great.

[00:02:22] Cool.

[00:02:23] Let's get started.

[00:02:23] Let's get the show started.

[00:02:25] We have a few things to talk about.

[00:02:27] And our main review is going to be love, love, love Amir Khan and Jui Chawla's movie from back

[00:02:33] in the day.

[00:02:34] I didn't even check which year it came out, but it was basically the second movie, I think.

[00:02:39] Wow.

[00:02:40] And we will get into that.

[00:02:42] We will get into that movie.

[00:02:44] But we wanted to talk a few things.

[00:02:46] First, housekeeping a little bit.

[00:02:49] We've made some changes to our Patreon.

[00:02:52] We've been actively doing a lot more content there.

[00:02:56] And also it's a safer space for us.

[00:02:58] I feel like with Twitter going completely insane, I don't think we have a space where

[00:03:03] we can openly express our opinion about certain things.

[00:03:08] So we did a whole episode about the US elections.

[00:03:11] And I think everybody that listens to Khan Dan knows where our leanings are and how we think

[00:03:18] about the world and Free Palestine, by the way.

[00:03:22] But yeah, that's a space where you can get a closer access to us.

[00:03:27] But we've made some changes because a lot of our Indian followers could not really subscribe

[00:03:32] on a monthly basis because there's some card validation that I don't really understand.

[00:03:38] But we've changed Patreon to a yearly subscription now.

[00:03:41] So you basically make one payment and then you're a member for a whole year.

[00:03:45] We haven't changed it.

[00:03:46] And you can still get the different payers.

[00:03:47] There's an option to subscribe annually as well.

[00:03:49] Yeah.

[00:03:52] And the annual subscription actually comes at a discount.

[00:03:56] So that's like, you know, even better.

[00:04:00] Yeah.

[00:04:00] As desis love discounts.

[00:04:02] So, you know, if your economic situation allows you to sign up to Patreon, do that.

[00:04:08] You can do that now with a yearly membership.

[00:04:11] And we've also made some changes to the tiers, like the different benefits you get in which

[00:04:16] member group you are.

[00:04:18] We made a video about that.

[00:04:20] Actually, I think you can even join as a free member for a couple of days and just check

[00:04:23] what the community is like.

[00:04:24] So even that I would suggest.

[00:04:26] A lot of people do that.

[00:04:27] So that's something I would suggest.

[00:04:29] A lot of people have upgraded their plans and I want to give them a shout out.

[00:04:35] So the following patrons kind of upgraded their plans.

[00:04:39] This is Farzan, Pragati, Jasmine, Lena and Suhela.

[00:04:44] So big shout out and a big thanks to you.

[00:04:46] And we had also a few new members.

[00:04:49] Amrita, maybe you want to give them a shout out?

[00:04:51] Yeah.

[00:04:52] And they have some amazing handles too.

[00:04:54] So there's Poorti, Ankit, Lazy Panda, Surya, Ninad, Isha and Caroline.

[00:05:02] Welcome to the show.

[00:05:03] Is Lazy Panda Drama Panda or are we just very like there's a lot of pandas in our Patreon?

[00:05:09] Drama Panda is a friend of mine.

[00:05:12] I don't know who Lazy Panda is, but I look forward to her becoming a friend.

[00:05:17] Okay.

[00:05:17] Because I was just thinking like drama kar kar ke ab lazy ho ga yeh.

[00:05:21] You know, like that's the evolution of drama panda to lazy panda.

[00:05:26] But anyway, welcome to being a Patreon.

[00:05:29] Thank you so much.

[00:05:31] And we also have to announce our 300.

[00:05:35] No, what am I doing here?

[00:05:38] 300.

[00:05:41] I'm completely confused why we're doing it because I lost count basically.

[00:05:45] It's like we've done 250.

[00:05:47] So the idea was we were going to do a 250 khandan celebration.

[00:05:52] We had to push that a bit further because, you know, you guys are traveling and things like that.

[00:05:57] But we're ready now.

[00:05:59] So this Sunday we'll be doing a live stream.

[00:06:01] And the live stream will be announcing our new series, which is the Khandan 80s series, where we're going to be discussing movies from the 80s.

[00:06:11] We kind of asked our listeners and our Patreon a couple of weeks ago, also people on TikTok we asked, which 80s movie would you like us to discuss?

[00:06:21] And we got a bunch of suggestions.

[00:06:23] And I thought it might be nice to have a live stream and decide which movies are we going to discuss.

[00:06:29] So we're going to be picking 10 movies and then five movies will be decided by the people in Patreon.

[00:06:36] But you can listen in.

[00:06:38] You can join the discussion on YouTube.

[00:06:40] You can chat with us.

[00:06:42] It's going to be a fun hang.

[00:06:43] It's going to be on this Sunday at 3.30 UK time.

[00:06:49] And I'll have to post 9 o'clock in India, I think.

[00:06:53] 9 o'clock in India.

[00:06:54] Yeah.

[00:06:56] And then...

[00:06:58] I don't really remember what...

[00:07:00] US people, you can convert.

[00:07:01] You guys are great at math, right?

[00:07:03] You guys are known as being good at math.

[00:07:05] So we'll post it on our socials in any case.

[00:07:09] So you have the right time zone.

[00:07:11] And the link will be available on our socials.

[00:07:14] Sujoy, how do you post the link usually?

[00:07:16] How does it work?

[00:07:18] So we will post the banner on Instagram and TikTok and on Twitter and Blue Sky.

[00:07:26] But the links for them will be available on our Patreon, on Twitter and also on...

[00:07:33] I guess on Instagram stories.

[00:07:36] Yeah.

[00:07:37] It'll be 10.30 AM.

[00:07:38] Can I embed it to this episode?

[00:07:39] Yeah, maybe.

[00:07:41] Yeah, we can do that.

[00:07:42] So I'll embed it in this episode too.

[00:07:46] For the US?

[00:07:47] Sorry.

[00:07:47] 10.30...

[00:07:48] 10.30...

[00:07:49] Yes.

[00:07:50] I'm sorry.

[00:07:50] There's a bit of lag.

[00:07:52] Yeah, the lag is just like...

[00:07:54] You finish what you were saying and then I'll say the time.

[00:07:58] Yeah.

[00:07:58] No, I was saying we'll add it to the show notes on this episode, the YouTube link, so they can

[00:08:05] join us on Sunday and you know exactly where it is.

[00:08:07] Because I know a lot of people maybe don't follow us on social media.

[00:08:11] Twitter has become toxic.

[00:08:12] So we'll try to post as much as we can, but we'll add it to the episode here too.

[00:08:18] And Amrita, go ahead.

[00:08:20] So it's going to be at 10.30 AM Eastern Standard Time for the US people.

[00:08:26] So that's half past three in the afternoon for the UK folk.

[00:08:31] It will be 9 PM for the India folk and it will be 10.30 AM EST for the Americans.

[00:08:43] And it's going to be a YouTube live stream.

[00:08:45] And as Asim and Sujoy just said, you can find the link in our show notes and you can find

[00:08:50] it on our socials, including our Instagram stories, our Twitter and individual Blue Sky

[00:08:58] accounts.

[00:08:59] We're spending a lot more time on Blue Sky, by the way.

[00:09:01] So come find us on Blue Sky.

[00:09:04] Yeah, I'll update our Blue Sky handles on the show notes too.

[00:09:09] So if you want to follow us there, it's like a wholesome place.

[00:09:12] It's nice.

[00:09:13] Although I have some issues too.

[00:09:16] Maybe we can discuss that on a Patreon bonus episode or things like that.

[00:09:20] But yeah, it might be an interesting topic too.

[00:09:23] Because I have trouble leaving Twitter for a certain reason.

[00:09:26] I just wanted to point out that and remind people that the live stream is happening on

[00:09:32] Sunday, by the way.

[00:09:33] We have mentioned the time.

[00:09:35] Sunday ko ana, Saturday ko nei.

[00:09:38] Exactly.

[00:09:39] Yeah.

[00:09:40] Yeah.

[00:09:41] No, but I'm looking forward.

[00:09:43] Join us.

[00:09:43] It's going to be fun.

[00:09:45] And if you do miss it, the only way to watch it will be on Patreon.

[00:09:49] So it's going to be a Patreon benefit with the video and everything in the chat.

[00:09:53] So that's where you can watch it if you can't join us on Sunday.

[00:09:58] Okay.

[00:09:58] Great.

[00:10:01] That's it, right?

[00:10:02] That's it for housekeeping?

[00:10:04] Great.

[00:10:06] Okay.

[00:10:06] Well, there's a few news stories I dropped this week.

[00:10:13] Maybe I'll turn off video.

[00:10:14] Maybe see if that works.

[00:10:15] See if that works.

[00:10:16] Yeah.

[00:10:18] Yeah.

[00:10:19] So there were a few news stories this week that we kind of quickly wanted to go over.

[00:10:26] Amrita, you want to get into it first, maybe?

[00:10:28] Because people explicitly asked you to talk about this.

[00:10:32] Yeah.

[00:10:32] So what happened this week is Nain Tara, whom some of you might remember from Jawan, released

[00:10:42] an extraordinary letter addressed to her past frenemy slash collaborator, Dhanush.

[00:10:52] And we are big fans of Dhanush and his work on this show.

[00:10:56] But she released this letter.

[00:11:00] It is just an extraordinary letter in that it was an all-out attack.

[00:11:06] Shit.

[00:11:07] Okay.

[00:11:07] Because, okay, the backstory is that a few years ago, Nain Tara was acting in this movie that

[00:11:17] was produced by Dhanush called Nanam Rawdida.

[00:11:22] And that was a huge hit.

[00:11:25] And it was directed by Vignesh, who is now Nain Tara's husband.

[00:11:29] And they met on the sets of that movie.

[00:11:32] They fell in love.

[00:11:33] And then they got married.

[00:11:34] Now, the scuttlebutt is that that movie ran into production issues and went massively over

[00:11:44] budget.

[00:11:45] This is not speculation.

[00:11:46] This is actually, everyone knows that that happened.

[00:11:49] But the reason why it went, you know, over budget, people are a little bit more iffy about

[00:11:59] that.

[00:12:00] But the common narrative is that the reason why it went over budget is because Nain Tara

[00:12:05] and Vignesh were spending all their time kuchikouing and weren't really, you know, paying attention

[00:12:13] to the movie itself.

[00:12:15] Which, I mean, that must have been some serious kuchikouing for the movie to go like three times

[00:12:22] over its budget.

[00:12:23] That's just ridiculous.

[00:12:25] But that's the common narrative.

[00:12:28] And then Nain Tara basically, you know, it became sort of really apparent that Nain Tara

[00:12:35] and Dhanush had had a falling out over that movie.

[00:12:38] And Nain Tara being Nain Tara, you know, she did things like, you know, she won a whole

[00:12:44] bunch of awards for that film.

[00:12:45] And every time she'd accept an award, she'd be like, well, and my thanks to my producer

[00:12:50] Dhanush, who wasn't very happy with me on my performance.

[00:12:55] And just like did all this needling.

[00:12:58] And then after that, I guess like they never really worked together again or whatever.

[00:13:03] And then Nain Tara did this, there was this documentary that was made about her, which

[00:13:14] I haven't seen, but it was sold to Netflix.

[00:13:17] And in the documentary, you know, one of the major themes in this narrative, I guess, was

[00:13:25] about her finding her happily ever after with, you know, her now husband.

[00:13:30] And of course, if you're going to talk about how this was an on-set romance and they met

[00:13:34] each other on the sets of this movie, then they're going to allude to this movie.

[00:13:39] And what they wanted to do was include a bit of BTS, behind the scenes footage.

[00:13:47] And Dhanush basically just left them on read.

[00:13:50] Like he didn't say no, he didn't say yes.

[00:13:53] He just literally ghosted them.

[00:13:56] And then they waited around for like two years waiting for him to say, okay, you can use this

[00:14:02] footage or no, you can't use this footage.

[00:14:04] And then they went ahead with footage that they had on their devices.

[00:14:09] So this was something that, you know, like Vikneesh had recorded on his phone or something.

[00:14:14] And it's not a huge amount of footage from what I understand.

[00:14:18] It's probably about like 10 to 30 seconds maybe.

[00:14:21] And after the documentary went live, Dhanush sent a cease and desist to Netflix and said,

[00:14:31] you owe me 10 crores for using that footage because I own it.

[00:14:37] And Nainthara just like went off like a rocket.

[00:14:41] And she started the letter by addressing it to Dhanush and then like addressed him as like son of and brother of.

[00:14:54] And the context is that he's a Nepo baby.

[00:14:57] And Nainthara is a self-made non-Nepo kid.

[00:15:02] And then she also said, I wish you were half the man that you appear to be during audio launches.

[00:15:10] Which, wow, just brutal.

[00:15:15] And then what happened after she published it on her socials and also the caption that she chose for this letter was love and only love.

[00:15:30] And after it got published, especially on Instagram, a whole bunch of actresses, most of whom have worked with Dhanush in the past,

[00:15:43] including people like Shruti Hassan and, you know, like a whole bunch of people,

[00:15:51] they all reshared and liked that post.

[00:15:55] So now a lot of people are talking about like, what was Dhanush doing to all these other women that all of them just like fell in line like that?

[00:16:06] You know, there's been like all these stories about him misbehaving with Nitya Mayan, for example.

[00:16:12] And now like everybody's talking about it all over again.

[00:16:16] And it's also really funny because like most of these actresses are Malayali.

[00:16:21] So Dhanush fans are like, it's a Malayali conspiracy to bring down Dhanush.

[00:16:28] It's just really funny.

[00:16:30] And I have to say, this is the kind of drama that I've been missing in Bollywood.

[00:16:36] Like, you know, there's no like, it's not like Hindu Muslim.

[00:16:38] It's not like any of that stuff.

[00:16:40] It is just old fashioned, like shanking in the streets.

[00:16:45] I love it.

[00:16:47] I love it.

[00:16:47] When she said, when she wrote love and only love, she meant that in the voice of Raza Murad.

[00:16:55] Love and only love.

[00:17:01] Also, when she says, I wish you were half the man.

[00:17:04] Is that like a short joke?

[00:17:06] Is she making fun of his height too?

[00:17:11] But yeah.

[00:17:13] But whatever Dhanush has been doing.

[00:17:15] Yeah, that's the thing that was most surprising to me because I don't know the gossip in the, you know, the South industry as much.

[00:17:24] So this kind of blew up and there was a lot of like, you go girl energy going around.

[00:17:29] Like, yeah, finally, you know, like stick it up.

[00:17:31] But I was like, I don't know what, like, I thought it was just like a producer rights issue.

[00:17:37] But then when all of the celebrities started liking the post and things like that, there seems to be something shady going on here, right?

[00:17:44] Like, you know, dal me kuch kala lag ra hai.

[00:17:47] Especially like Dhanush ki dal, you know, like something seems wrong there.

[00:17:51] So I don't know, are there, have there been rumors?

[00:17:54] Have there, like, what's the story here?

[00:17:57] Follow Tamil industry gossip as closely as, you know, like say our friends over on the other Banana podcast do.

[00:18:04] So I'm not sure about, you know, like what exactly Dhanush has been up to apart from like, you know, shenanigans with Nain Tala and like the producer stuff.

[00:18:16] There was, of course, like years ago, there was the whole Suchi stuff that came out.

[00:18:25] Suchitra is like a singer in the Tamil industry who is slightly insane, to be honest.

[00:18:30] She's sort of like the azalea bangs of the Tamil industry.

[00:18:35] And she has been talking about how like Dhanush is in a gay relationship with somebody else and is like swing partners with Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan or something in London.

[00:18:46] Like it was just like insane.

[00:18:48] But the subtext was that Dhanush is a huge, like drug addict and like is used, is having all these like wild parties in Chennai where all the other Nepal kids gather, etc.

[00:19:03] And they're all, you know, having orgies, etc.

[00:19:07] But also, he's DDD.

[00:19:10] He's DDD.

[00:19:12] DDD.

[00:19:14] But also somebody sent me a screenshot where Mahesh Babu had posted like a screenshot of Nain Tala's documentary and was like, you know, amazing or like, you know, I forget what the caption was.

[00:19:33] But he was just like, this is amazing or something or like he really loves it.

[00:19:36] So it's and that happened after she had published her open letter.

[00:19:42] So it's not just the women who are like going up against Dhanush.

[00:19:46] It's also like men from like other industries.

[00:19:49] Like Mahesh Babu is not a man who quotes controversy as such.

[00:19:55] And for him to be just like, yep, like I'm on the side of Nain Tala.

[00:20:00] I'm just like, I don't, I don't know what Dhanush has been doing.

[00:20:03] But several chickens seem coming home to roost.

[00:20:10] And I guess he shouldn't have gotten that divorce from Rajini's daughter because I bet that plays into it.

[00:20:18] Hmm.

[00:20:19] So lots of collabery basically going on.

[00:20:21] Yep.

[00:20:22] Yep.

[00:20:22] Yep.

[00:20:25] Speaking of shenanigans, something also going on with A.R.

[00:20:30] Rahman at the moment.

[00:20:33] I mean, they announced.

[00:20:35] Yeah.

[00:20:36] Sorry.

[00:20:36] Go ahead.

[00:20:37] I'm sorry.

[00:20:38] No, no, you go ahead.

[00:20:39] You go ahead.

[00:20:40] Like I want to hear.

[00:20:41] No, like you could have, you know, knock me over with the proverbial feather when that news broke this awning.

[00:20:48] Like I genuinely had, did you have, did either of you have any clue that there was like something wrong with their marriage?

[00:20:57] No, they seem to be like very devoted to each other.

[00:21:00] Right.

[00:21:00] Like a very kind of happy, wholesome kind of family.

[00:21:03] But A.R. Rahman also doesn't seem like that kind of guy like that would ever get divorced and things like that.

[00:21:09] Right.

[00:21:09] Like, so, yeah, I was like quite surprised about it.

[00:21:14] And then literally an hour or two later, there's the news that his bassist Mohini De is also announcing her divorce.

[00:21:26] And obviously Bollywood gossip sites being gossip sites are already putting two and two pictures together and extrapolating.

[00:21:37] There's a lot of conjecture, as Karan Johar would say.

[00:21:42] I mean, have you seen that young lady's picture, by the way?

[00:21:48] Mohini De, yeah.

[00:21:49] I've seen her live.

[00:21:50] Yeah, on concerts and stuff.

[00:21:53] Yeah.

[00:21:55] I'm going to show you the photo.

[00:22:00] Can you see?

[00:22:02] Yeah.

[00:22:03] Yeah.

[00:22:06] If A.R. Rahman goes from like his sweet hijabi wife to like a bassist in a bikini, the number of heads that are going to explode are going to be epic.

[00:22:24] I'm just looking forward to the music he's going to make now.

[00:22:29] No, but like this poor woman.

[00:22:31] Only enough songs.

[00:22:33] No, but she's like, she's really young.

[00:22:35] Hai Rama again.

[00:22:36] Sorry.

[00:22:38] Sorry.

[00:22:39] Asim stopped.

[00:22:40] I had to read my Hai Rama joke.

[00:22:42] Sorry.

[00:22:44] Asim's been waiting and waiting to make it.

[00:22:46] Like he wasn't getting like the opportunity to do it.

[00:22:50] No, but like this lady is like really young.

[00:22:53] Like I don't like I hope that's not true because like she's a baby.

[00:22:57] Like why would, you know, anyway.

[00:23:00] I don't know.

[00:23:02] Yeah.

[00:23:02] Can I just say I just feel messy talking about this.

[00:23:05] Like we're making jokes and stuff like that.

[00:23:07] It's kind of messy.

[00:23:08] Like, you know, like it's sad.

[00:23:10] You know, like they seem all good, talented people.

[00:23:14] I'm just bringing it up because the posts are out, right?

[00:23:18] Like I'm seeing it already.

[00:23:19] Like people kind of, you know, creating these things.

[00:23:22] So, yeah, it's just, it's a sad state of affairs, especially when you have kids.

[00:23:27] You've been married for so long to kind of go through this.

[00:23:30] And then Mohini is very young.

[00:23:33] Yeah.

[00:23:33] And also like Rahman's wife, or his ex-wife, I guess, soon to be, has engaged one of the most famous and one of the most famous divorce lawyers in India.

[00:23:49] Like a woman who's like known to be a total shark.

[00:23:53] So I don't know how amicable the separation is going to be because I don't think her choice of lawyers indicates it to be like a very amicable separation.

[00:24:05] And Vandera Shah is like, you know, the lawyer.

[00:24:10] She's not like a Chennai-based lawyer.

[00:24:12] She's like a very famous, I think she's Bombay-based, if I'm not mistaken, and a very expensive, very experienced celebrity lawyer.

[00:24:22] So that's always an indication of how bad things are about to get.

[00:24:27] So I would say everyone better watch out.

[00:24:32] Here's my two cents.

[00:24:34] I saw the tweet from the AR Rahman account, right?

[00:24:37] And people were commenting something very special about it.

[00:24:40] And that was the official PR statement that was released as a quoted statement from the Twitter account.

[00:24:48] And then it ends on a hashtag, AR Sairab breakup.

[00:24:52] And everybody was like, okay, after weddings, it's the turn for divorces to have a hashtag now, which is amusing, to say the least.

[00:25:00] Yeah.

[00:25:00] Yeah.

[00:25:02] The lawyer's name is Vandana Shah?

[00:25:06] S-H-A-H.

[00:25:07] Not sure.

[00:25:09] Although that would be amazing.

[00:25:11] That would be amazing.

[00:25:13] I was like, she's born for this.

[00:25:15] Basically, this is, you know, like when your name is like Johnny Contractor and you become a contractor, you know, like that kind of thing.

[00:25:23] But anyway, yeah, I feel dirty talking about this.

[00:25:25] I hope, you know, everybody figures this out and we get good music out of it.

[00:25:30] But I don't, yeah, it's just messy.

[00:25:32] I wanted to bring it up this week because it dropped basically this morning.

[00:25:35] I don't know about you guys, but I've not watched too many movies this week.

[00:25:39] I have watched a lot of interviews about movies though.

[00:25:43] I watched a couple.

[00:25:44] I don't think these will interest you.

[00:25:46] And you know me.

[00:25:47] I watch stuff that has no interest for you.

[00:25:50] I watched the Arjun Kapoor interview.

[00:25:52] And then I also watched the Rohit Shetty Ajay Devgan interview.

[00:25:57] Of course you did.

[00:25:59] Ranveer.

[00:26:00] Yeah, yeah.

[00:26:01] I've told you, I find Rohit Shetty's interviews fascinating.

[00:26:05] I find it really, really fascinating.

[00:26:08] But I've not watched a lot of those Ranveer interviews.

[00:26:13] It's tough to watch them.

[00:26:14] I find them really tough to watch.

[00:26:17] I don't know.

[00:26:18] Maybe just the person.

[00:26:20] I think the last one I watched was with Tiger Shoff and Akshay when they were promoting their movie.

[00:26:26] And I remember I had a tough time watching him talk to these celebrities then.

[00:26:31] And this was also kind of a very tough one.

[00:26:34] But the celebrities seem to be getting along with them.

[00:26:39] Ranveer Alabadi.

[00:26:40] Is that his name?

[00:26:41] Okay.

[00:26:42] Bear biceps guy.

[00:26:44] Yeah, bear biceps.

[00:26:45] Yeah.

[00:26:46] But he's quite big and popular in India, right?

[00:26:48] So he gets all of these big two-hour...

[00:26:51] Unfortunately, yeah.

[00:26:51] Yeah.

[00:26:52] Yeah.

[00:26:52] He's like the Joe Rogan of India.

[00:26:54] He gets like two hours, three hours of their time.

[00:26:56] So it's a deeper dive.

[00:26:58] But neither Rohit Shetty, neither Ajay Devgan are very talkative.

[00:27:03] So it is kind of, you know, trying to get blood out of a stone.

[00:27:08] But I found it kind of interesting to see where their mindset is at.

[00:27:12] I just also find it fascinating that they have become kind of, you know, the Dinero Scorsese of India.

[00:27:18] Like, I just was thinking, what are other combination of director-actors that have such a long collaboration?

[00:27:27] And there's not that many when you think about it.

[00:27:29] That's how sad it is.

[00:27:31] Yeah.

[00:27:32] I mean, they're already working on their next movie.

[00:27:35] They've done quite a few.

[00:27:36] And the way Rohit and Ajay talk to each other, it's like they just like working with each other all the time.

[00:27:42] And they want to continue working with each other all the time.

[00:27:45] So it's just interesting to see that kind of connect between these two.

[00:27:51] But yeah, it's not going to be interesting for you.

[00:27:54] And then I watched the Arjun Kapoor one.

[00:27:57] I haven't finished that one.

[00:27:58] But like he's the opposite of it, right?

[00:28:00] Like he has so much to say.

[00:28:03] And he's not had a lot of good years.

[00:28:06] I have a lot of goodwill for Arjun Kapoor.

[00:28:09] I've always said this.

[00:28:10] So I'm happy he has a little bit of a moment to shine with his Danger Lanka thing that he got.

[00:28:17] And yeah, the guy's been trying and the guy's been going through a lot of things.

[00:28:22] And he's not had an easy life at all.

[00:28:24] So he's talking a lot about that.

[00:28:26] But yeah, I'm not sure even people are that interested.

[00:28:29] I was looking at the view counts.

[00:28:31] And it was like under 100k, which is not that much for a YouTube interview.

[00:28:36] So I thought it was interesting.

[00:28:38] I thought it was interesting to get a peek of the years he's gone through and the struggles he's gone through.

[00:28:44] But it's just unfortunate that he doesn't have enough movies to back up what he's saying.

[00:28:53] Like the quality of work is not there.

[00:28:55] So yeah, that was the other interview that I watched.

[00:28:58] And then the third one was the Amir Khan and Kiran Rao interview.

[00:29:05] What are they called now?

[00:29:08] Hollywood Reporter India did, right?

[00:29:12] You guys, Sujo, you didn't get a chance to watch that, right?

[00:29:15] No.

[00:29:18] Amrita, did you?

[00:29:19] Because actually our patron Farzan also mentioned, and he's a huge Amir fan.

[00:29:25] He wanted us also to watch this.

[00:29:27] Did you get a chance to watch the whole thing, Amrita, or just a little bit?

[00:29:30] I watched the whole thing.

[00:29:33] And poor Farzan, you know, he needs to be careful what he was just for.

[00:29:39] But I will say that, you know, I did enjoy this interview.

[00:29:48] It's a very interesting and different dynamic between these two people, right?

[00:29:56] Amir Khan and Kiran Rao.

[00:30:00] Because Amir is himself in a way around Kiran that I've never seen him be with other people.

[00:30:10] Like with other people, he's always sort of trying too hard to be Jesus, right?

[00:30:16] Like that's my original complaint with Amir.

[00:30:20] But with Kiran, I feel like he feels like she has a lot of wisdom that he lacks.

[00:30:29] And he becomes like the masala creator in her presence.

[00:30:37] Right.

[00:30:37] And he doesn't have that moral and cultural capital that she has.

[00:30:46] And therefore, she now has a high ground.

[00:30:48] And he is like, you know, like...

[00:30:50] The underdog.

[00:30:51] Yeah.

[00:30:51] And he's like thinking about filthy things like money and commercial success.

[00:30:56] And she is above all of that.

[00:30:59] And he is just like, oh no, like what happened?

[00:31:01] And so it's a very different dynamic when the two of them are together and they're talking about stuff.

[00:31:08] And that was quite enjoyable.

[00:31:11] And like I enjoy watching this particular shade of Amir.

[00:31:14] Because this is actually the man that I always suspect lives behind that kind of wholesome cinema.

[00:31:26] Because the way a lot of people talk about Amir's films, they always talk about...

[00:31:34] They take it like very literally, right?

[00:31:36] Like the narrative that he has spent the last 20 years specifically.

[00:31:42] 24 years, I guess.

[00:31:43] Like since Lagan.

[00:31:45] He's built a very specific narrative about like a man who like cares about like bigger things.

[00:31:53] And, you know, is trying to do good in the world and all of that.

[00:31:57] And I don't...

[00:31:58] I'm not saying that he doesn't want to do any of that stuff.

[00:32:01] I'm sure he does.

[00:32:02] He seems like a good person.

[00:32:04] But there's a lot of people who really buy into that image and that narrative without any critical analysis whatsoever.

[00:32:15] And who kind of see him sort of like a saint, you know?

[00:32:21] Like here is Amir Khan, the one person in Bollywood who cares and who is wholesome and lovely.

[00:32:28] And I'm just like, he's also making tons of money.

[00:32:32] And that is basically his entire gig.

[00:32:37] Like he figured out a niche where he makes like very wholesome entertainment for a large mainstream audience.

[00:32:46] By saying very, you know, anodyne, very general statements of basic ethics.

[00:32:58] But because he is surrounded by all these masala movies that especially over the same 20 years has really taken a swing to the right,

[00:33:11] where morality is something that is either God-given or non-existent.

[00:33:16] He sort of stands out in comparison.

[00:33:20] And therefore everyone is just like, oh, like, you know, like Amir is doing something different.

[00:33:24] He's doing something hakke.

[00:33:25] He is not.

[00:33:26] He's making very traditional conservative cinema.

[00:33:31] It's just that we have sort of degraded as a culture.

[00:33:34] And therefore he comes up like smelling like roses.

[00:33:38] And it was just really interesting to me to listen to him talk about Lapata ladies in particular and what he saw as its problems, etc.

[00:33:49] Right.

[00:33:50] Yeah, no, I thought it was a fascinating discussion and dynamic.

[00:33:54] I found Amir to be a bit insufferable, to be honest, in this.

[00:33:59] Of course.

[00:34:01] We kind of switch places, Amrita.

[00:34:03] Like this is probably the Amir I like less.

[00:34:07] I felt he was very like he talked a lot over Kiran Rao.

[00:34:10] Like a lot of times she was trying to make a point and he just kept talking and talking to the point where it was actually quite funny.

[00:34:16] He said that apparently after they got divorced, he asked her how to be a better husband.

[00:34:22] And she said, you talk too much.

[00:34:25] And clearly he has not taken any notes of that.

[00:34:29] But I did find it interesting their insights in the Oscar race, though.

[00:34:34] Like how they want to present themselves and how the industry has changed since Lagan and how streaming has changed a lot of things and how they can push things.

[00:34:46] That was interesting.

[00:34:47] I really thought it was very political how they answered on all that we imagine is light not being nominated.

[00:34:56] That's the name of the movie, right?

[00:34:58] Yeah.

[00:35:00] Whereas, you know, La Pata Ladies did get nominated.

[00:35:04] I was also surprised that Amir watches no movies.

[00:35:07] Like any movie you talk about, he hasn't seen it.

[00:35:11] It's like, what's going on there?

[00:35:12] Like, what are you watching?

[00:35:14] I don't believe him.

[00:35:15] I 100% do not.

[00:35:18] He fumbled with the Pathan answer, if you paid attention.

[00:35:22] Like, he first was like, I haven't seen the movie, but I've seen the scene.

[00:35:27] And then as Anupama was talking about it, he was reacting to it as if he's hearing it for the very first time.

[00:35:34] Like, sir, you live in the world.

[00:35:37] Even people who haven't, like, seen that movie know that scene.

[00:35:40] You know, the Salman Shahrukh scene where they're saying that, you know, like, we need to keep going because

[00:35:48] butchompe ne chhor satte, etc.

[00:35:50] Everybody in the industry remembers that scene and has, like, heard it even if they haven't watched the film.

[00:35:56] So, that was, like, one of those things.

[00:35:59] Like, I just was like, huh, yeah, you need to get your story straight before you start lying on camera.

[00:36:07] Yeah.

[00:36:08] And the other also, what I thought was interesting is how much love there is between Anupama and Kiran Rao.

[00:36:15] Like, there seems to be, like, a very strong bond between them.

[00:36:19] And obviously, they've worked together.

[00:36:21] They worked closely on Mami together.

[00:36:22] So, but it really shone through in that interview.

[00:36:25] And I thought that was really a nice thing to see.

[00:36:29] I don't think Lapata Ladies will win the Oscar.

[00:36:32] I just don't see it happening.

[00:36:35] Also, just because the name is now confusing, now they've changed it to Lost Ladies.

[00:36:40] But it's not Lost Ladies on Netflix.

[00:36:42] It's weird to do this kind of thing.

[00:36:44] But I don't know.

[00:36:46] I don't know how successful they will be.

[00:36:47] I hope they win.

[00:36:48] I really think it's a good movie.

[00:36:51] And I think India deserves a win, for sure, in terms of Oscars.

[00:36:57] I was also surprised that, apparently, all that we can imagine, Light is now getting nominated in the main category.

[00:37:05] That's how they're going to position it.

[00:37:07] But they can do that, obviously, because it's not necessarily an Indian production, right?

[00:37:10] It's a French and UK production.

[00:37:12] So, they can do whatever they want.

[00:37:15] Which probably is also the reason why India could not submit it as their official pick, right?

[00:37:22] If I'm not mistaken, maybe?

[00:37:23] I don't know.

[00:37:23] No, it was shortlisted.

[00:37:25] They can't?

[00:37:25] It was shortlisted, but they didn't pick it.

[00:37:27] Okay.

[00:37:28] Okay.

[00:37:29] Yeah.

[00:37:30] Fascinating.

[00:37:31] Fascinating.

[00:37:32] Sujoy, are you going to go back and watch it?

[00:37:34] Or time didn't have happened?

[00:37:37] I've heard it from you guys, so it's good enough for me.

[00:37:40] Why would I hear, like, Amir Khan talk for an hour when I can just listen to a TLDR version from Asim and Amrita?

[00:37:48] Amrita.

[00:37:51] Our version is better than Kang.

[00:37:54] For sure.

[00:37:55] You could watch it just for the, you know, the clothes Amir is wearing.

[00:38:00] He's put in an effort for Anupama Chopra, right?

[00:38:02] Like, that was cool.

[00:38:04] You guys should be able to see how Amrita's expression is right now when you mention Amrita's fashion choices.

[00:38:11] Yeah.

[00:38:13] Let's get into Amr.

[00:38:14] Let's get into love, love, love.

[00:38:19] So.

[00:38:20] There is a point in love, love, love where they sit around and everyone is like, congrats, congrats, congrats.

[00:38:27] And they're like, thanks, thanks, thanks.

[00:38:29] And everyone is like, party, party, party.

[00:38:33] Yeah.

[00:38:35] I think you're mentioning when Amir and Juhi are sent to the quiz competition by their principal.

[00:38:45] And that principal sends Amir because you answer very quickly.

[00:38:54] That's why you should go to the quiz.

[00:38:56] There's no mention if the answers are correct.

[00:38:59] I mean, it's a quiz competition.

[00:39:02] It's a quiz competition when the final question is, who is the biggest of the world?

[00:39:07] And Amir answers, I.

[00:39:09] And he wins.

[00:39:13] So I think the principal made the right choice.

[00:39:18] Yeah.

[00:39:19] We all, all three of us made the wrong choice.

[00:39:23] We didn't make a choice.

[00:39:25] This was Patreon.

[00:39:26] Like they are the ones that voted and like told us to watch love, love, love.

[00:39:30] Guys, this is going to happen, right?

[00:39:32] We are, Amir, we've covered most of his filmography now, right?

[00:39:36] So there's a few left.

[00:39:38] I should actually update my list and what is left and what we haven't covered yet.

[00:39:44] Shah Rukh and Salman, we have tons to do.

[00:39:47] But Amir, we're running towards the end of, you know, the end is near.

[00:39:52] And this is going to happen.

[00:39:53] We're going to be talking about Aval Number.

[00:39:55] We're going to be talking about, you know, this one.

[00:39:59] And yeah, this is just the task we decided to do.

[00:40:02] So now we have to go through it.

[00:40:04] How are your lachhans, by the way?

[00:40:05] My question for you guys.

[00:40:07] Yeah, it's because the mom is constantly saying that.

[00:40:11] The stepmom.

[00:40:12] It's like, she doesn't have lachhans.

[00:40:13] It's like, wow.

[00:40:15] Shanti has no chill.

[00:40:16] You know, lachhans.

[00:40:17] Shanti has no chill.

[00:40:19] Yeah.

[00:40:20] All throughout the movie, she's bickering, bickering, bickering.

[00:40:23] And that one moment she gets, she says,

[00:40:31] When did this happen, Shanti?

[00:40:33] And like, she begins the movie by saying like, if I wasn't a Soteli ma, then I would have given him some poison.

[00:40:42] And like, literally, like that's the introduction scene to this woman.

[00:40:47] And then in the end, she's just like, machya, peta.

[00:40:51] And I'm like, what?

[00:40:53] So for those that don't know, I'm reading it from the Wikipedia page.

[00:40:57] Love, Love, Love is a 1989 Hindi romantic action film directed by Babur Subhash, who is also the director of Disco Dancer, by the way.

[00:41:06] And I did not know this movie was part of the Disco Dancer universe.

[00:41:10] They make it very clear it's part of the Disco Dancer universe.

[00:41:13] It stars Amir Khan, Jui Chawla, Gulshan Grover, Raza Murad, Dalip Tahil, Om Shif Puri, with a turn.

[00:41:20] And it was a remake of a movie called Tough Turf, which did you guys see the trailer that I sent to you guys?

[00:41:27] You did not, right?

[00:41:29] No.

[00:41:30] Oh my God.

[00:41:31] Guys, I was hoping you would watch the trailer.

[00:41:33] I will upload it to our pages because it is a short for short remake.

[00:41:42] And you watch Love, Love and Love, Love, Love, Love, and you can see that how would they copy?

[00:41:49] You know, this seems like an original insanity.

[00:41:52] Like it doesn't seem that this can come from the brain of anybody that's a sane person.

[00:41:57] But it is actually very similar to the original.

[00:42:00] But the original seems like a coherent movie.

[00:42:03] This does not.

[00:42:05] This does not seem like a coherent movie.

[00:42:07] Oh my God.

[00:42:07] The original had James Spader in it?

[00:42:10] Robert Downey Jr., James Spader.

[00:42:13] Who is Gulshan Grover in that scenario?

[00:42:15] He's not.

[00:42:16] I think, wait, it is.

[00:42:18] Yeah.

[00:42:18] Let me just double check before I mess this up.

[00:42:23] I'm sure I saw him in the trailer, Robert Downey Jr.

[00:42:26] Yeah, he is in the cast list.

[00:42:29] He is, right?

[00:42:30] Yeah.

[00:42:30] He's playing the best friend.

[00:42:31] He's playing the breakdowns, her best friend.

[00:42:34] There's no breakdancing in the original one.

[00:42:37] Yes.

[00:42:39] I don't know, man.

[00:42:40] Sujoy, let's get into it.

[00:42:41] What did you think of Love, Love, Love?

[00:42:42] Okay.

[00:42:43] So this definitely felt like a blast from the past.

[00:42:46] Because this comes straight from the success of QSQT.

[00:42:49] And I think everybody was very much looking forward to renting this VHS when it came out.

[00:42:56] I did not get to see it on the big screen.

[00:42:58] And this movie played for months and months at my house.

[00:43:03] I don't remember any of the plots.

[00:43:05] But I vividly remember that there is a party song where Amir gives Juhi a Taj Mahal.

[00:43:12] The big baddies break the Taj Mahal.

[00:43:15] And Juhi is like, she collects it, puts it in the box and then kisses it.

[00:43:20] And then she throws away all the other presents and then tramples on it.

[00:43:24] I have that memory just seared into my brain.

[00:43:27] And when I saw that happening, I was like, oh my God, this is such a core memory that came from nowhere.

[00:43:35] Yeah, this is a movie of the 80s.

[00:43:39] Even though it came out towards the tail end of the 80s, it still feels like the aesthetic of this movie is very much of the 80s.

[00:43:51] The disco songs, Bappi Lairi, Vichai Benedict.

[00:43:56] It's very disco dancer, like done by Amir and Juhi in a way.

[00:44:01] And I was also sort of making notes.

[00:44:09] And at one point, I realized that this movie has so much going on and at the same time, no plot at all.

[00:44:17] That's how I would summarize my experience of Love, Love, Love.

[00:44:22] So you had your adolescence in India and I imagine you went to parties.

[00:44:28] How many girls have you given Taj Mahals to?

[00:44:30] My pocket money never amounted to that much that I would kisi ke liye Taj Mahal barao.

[00:44:39] Plastic wala bini.

[00:44:41] Amrita, how many Taj Mahals have you received?

[00:44:44] It is actually quite bad luck to be given or to give someone Taj Mahal bini.

[00:44:51] It's like, it's a mausoleum, you guys.

[00:44:53] You shouldn't be giving anybody a Taj Mahal, by the way.

[00:44:58] So I'm very happy to report that nobody's ever given me a Taj Mahal.

[00:45:01] Thank you.

[00:45:02] What did you think of Love, Love, Love?

[00:45:03] Oh, it's terrible.

[00:45:09] It is incoherent.

[00:45:11] It is boring.

[00:45:14] Like, you know, there's some movies that are just like bad, but they're quite fun to watch

[00:45:19] or they'll have like things in it that are like, okay, so this was interesting.

[00:45:22] This had none of those things.

[00:45:24] It was just a drag from like beginning to end, including the songs.

[00:45:28] Like, I didn't like any of the songs.

[00:45:31] And it was wild to me because it was Vijay Benedict.

[00:45:34] It was Parvati Khan.

[00:45:36] It was Alicia Chennai in a Bappi Lahiri soundtrack.

[00:45:42] And literally, like, first of all, like all the songs kept saying love, love, love.

[00:45:48] So like all the songs started merging into like one like extended song to me.

[00:45:54] I was just like, wait, did we just listen to the song?

[00:45:57] Because it's the same exact lyrics.

[00:45:58] Like what's happening?

[00:46:01] Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was the same song that was kind of coming back

[00:46:05] or these were separate songs.

[00:46:06] I wasn't 100% sure.

[00:46:08] And then it was also shocking to me because these are all singers whom I've heard sing before

[00:46:14] and I know that they can sing.

[00:46:15] I mean, come on, Alicia Chennai, are you kidding me?

[00:46:17] But they all sounded like Besura throughout like all.

[00:46:23] And I don't know, maybe it's the, you know, the really cool.

[00:46:28] The terrible quality of this movie and it's audio as well.

[00:46:32] I don't know.

[00:46:34] But I'm not even like an audiophile.

[00:46:36] Like I'm not like one of these people that's just like, oh my God, like I really care about

[00:46:40] the sound.

[00:46:41] But even to me, I was just like, this is just terrible.

[00:46:45] And then of course there was Ahmed in his short shots.

[00:46:48] This is his short shot era.

[00:46:51] And that was traumatizing.

[00:46:53] The only thing that I liked was Juhi.

[00:46:58] Juhi is a sweet little bouquet of flowers and I love her very much in this film.

[00:47:05] In defense of the soundtrack, I would say Disco Dandia still rocks.

[00:47:09] It is my entire childhood.

[00:47:12] I will not stand any slander against Disco Dandia.

[00:47:16] But this isn't even like the best Disco Dandia.

[00:47:18] Like I feel like there's other people who've done like Disco Dandia and like it was like

[00:47:23] better than this one.

[00:47:24] No, it's my first one.

[00:47:26] It's special in my...

[00:47:27] Yeah, I think Disco Dandia is probably the only reason why this movie was successful.

[00:47:31] Was it successful?

[00:47:33] Like whatever modicum of success it had.

[00:47:36] It obviously didn't perform as well as, you know, Kiamat Se Kiamat Tak.

[00:47:40] But I think probably an average grocer in that era.

[00:47:44] I'm just thinking, you know, like it feels like they're trying to make it like a young

[00:47:48] people's movie.

[00:47:49] You know, like this is what the young peoples are doing and things like that.

[00:47:54] And music and stuff like that.

[00:47:56] And it looks very low budget, right?

[00:47:58] There's like no money spent on this.

[00:47:59] Like everybody just wore their own clothes.

[00:48:02] Only for Gulshan Grover, somebody went to, you know, Thailand or Bangkok and got some

[00:48:06] ripoff Adidas and stuff like that.

[00:48:09] I think actually beside Jui Chawala, I think Gulshan Grover is the one that commits the most

[00:48:14] to, you know, whatever he's trying to do here.

[00:48:16] He's just vibing like it is.

[00:48:19] And Debu from America, hi.

[00:48:22] Yes.

[00:48:22] Debu being Jui Chawala's brother was like a trip, man.

[00:48:27] I didn't see that coming.

[00:48:29] Yeah.

[00:48:29] It's hilarious.

[00:48:31] I had some thoughts.

[00:48:32] I can't remember now.

[00:48:35] So, yeah, let's go.

[00:48:36] Let's go a few of the beats here.

[00:48:38] Right.

[00:48:38] So Aamir seems to Aamir comes from a poor background.

[00:48:42] He is Dalip Tahil's first son from his first marriage.

[00:48:47] He's gotten remarried.

[00:48:49] I'm just starting with the plot.

[00:48:51] And Jui is Amrita's yawning already.

[00:48:54] He's like, I cannot do the whole plot of the movie.

[00:48:56] Yeah.

[00:48:57] Yeah.

[00:48:57] No, but like Aasem just said that, you know, like Aamir comes from a poor family.

[00:49:02] But I just want to say Aamir's stepmother also says that.

[00:49:07] And then Dalip Tahil, who plays Aamir's dad, is like, I'm not a poor man.

[00:49:15] I make 10,000 years of a year.

[00:49:18] And my son is not a poor man.

[00:49:20] He's got a poor man.

[00:49:22] He's got a poor man.

[00:49:22] He's got a poor man.

[00:49:24] He's got a poor man.

[00:49:25] So that's a lot of money for like 1989.

[00:49:29] So, yeah, they're not really, they're just not as rich as Juhi and her crime-tastic circle

[00:49:38] of friends.

[00:49:39] Yeah.

[00:49:40] And so Dalip Tahil has two taxis apparently.

[00:49:43] Later on, this becomes a plot point.

[00:49:45] But suddenly, I thought when he kept saying he was a driver, I thought he was going to

[00:49:51] be Raza Murad's driver or Om Shiv Puri's driver.

[00:49:54] Like that was, there's no connection there whatsoever.

[00:49:58] Aamir joins a school who seems to be, it seems to be a new school that he's joined because

[00:50:03] he doesn't have any friends and stuff like that.

[00:50:04] But again, it's not a plot point that gets elaborated and things like that.

[00:50:08] He immediately gets bullied by Gulshan Grover's gang and they mess up his cycle basically,

[00:50:15] right?

[00:50:16] So, and there he falls in love with Juhi Chawla who seems to be really enjoying riding

[00:50:21] on Aamir's cycle when Gulshan Grover is driving over it.

[00:50:25] Juhi seems like, you know, in like Greece, like those pink ladies, you know, that's what

[00:50:30] the vibe that I'm getting from Juhi at the start of the movie, right?

[00:50:33] Like she seems to be, she seems to be okay with whatever Gulshan Grover is doing and all

[00:50:38] that kind of thing.

[00:50:39] Yeah, the first time that we see her.

[00:50:41] Yeah, that's the first time that we see Juhi where she's just sitting in the car chilling

[00:50:47] while Gulshan and his minions are like beating and robbing some man.

[00:50:53] And she's just like, oh well, what can one do?

[00:50:56] And I'm like, bitch, what are you doing?

[00:50:58] Yeah, she's basically, she's basically a democratic voter in the US or like a labor voter in the

[00:51:05] UK, you know, it's like.

[00:51:06] She's a green voter.

[00:51:09] Yeah.

[00:51:09] What can be done?

[00:51:13] Robbing people and murdering people.

[00:51:15] What can we do?

[00:51:16] You know?

[00:51:20] Yeah.

[00:51:21] So, but yeah, they fall in love.

[00:51:23] They join a quiz show.

[00:51:25] They, and you know, it's, it's weird, man.

[00:51:28] Like going over the plot points, they fall like very much in love.

[00:51:32] And I don't know when it happened.

[00:51:33] I might've just like stepped out for a moment.

[00:51:36] Hey, let me, let me give you the logic.

[00:51:39] Yes.

[00:51:40] Think about filmmaking in this movie or be Subhash's entire filmography, like equivalent

[00:51:47] to a Sarkari job where everything is laid out for you.

[00:51:51] And you just pick something from each compartment and then you assemble it and then you put it

[00:51:57] in a file folder and you throw it at the customer.

[00:52:00] That's how this movie was made.

[00:52:02] There is no creative thought or any flourishes that, that would satisfy anybody, you know, invested

[00:52:12] in filmmaking.

[00:52:13] Yeah.

[00:52:14] Yeah.

[00:52:14] It's just blandest form of filmmaking, which is equivalent to a Sarkari job.

[00:52:22] So don't try to make sense.

[00:52:23] But I think he, but he's been, he was a moderately successful filmmaker, right?

[00:52:29] Like he made disco dancer massive, not even like a, like a, like a hit, but like a, like

[00:52:37] a generational hit, like an international hit.

[00:52:40] Like, you know, it's a big, like it's, you know, 80s ka RRR, like that's what disco dancer

[00:52:45] was, right?

[00:52:46] It traveled that movie, right?

[00:52:47] It connected with audiences.

[00:52:49] And then he also did like Kasam Pada Karne Waale Ki, which a big thing, disco dance dance,

[00:52:55] which had Amir's stepmom in it and she goes zoobie zoobie and then she gets kidnapped for

[00:53:00] 20 years.

[00:53:01] Crazy stuff happening in these movies, right?

[00:53:04] But these were hits, right?

[00:53:05] So I wouldn't like, Love, Love, Love is not even like an end of the career movie.

[00:53:11] Like, you know, he's lost his skills, you know, like he's not Subhash Ghai in Kisna.

[00:53:16] You know, it's not his first movie where he hasn't figured out how to make a movie.

[00:53:20] It's kind of like, you know, he was in the height of his creative endeavors, but this movie

[00:53:27] is badly shot.

[00:53:29] It's badly edited.

[00:53:31] It makes no logical sense.

[00:53:32] The action is terrible.

[00:53:34] The music isn't good.

[00:53:36] There's no set design.

[00:53:38] There's nothing.

[00:53:39] I was like, what's going on?

[00:53:40] Like, I was really baffled.

[00:53:42] Like, when you said, Sujoy, yesterday, you had not watched the movie yet.

[00:53:46] I was like, how is Sujoy going to sit through this whole movie?

[00:53:50] Because it took me three times to get through it.

[00:53:53] It was really hard.

[00:53:54] I watched it on 1.5x.

[00:53:56] Yeah.

[00:53:56] By the way, I was watching that Ajay Devangan Rohit Sethi interview and they put it on the

[00:54:03] screen, watch it in 1.5x.

[00:54:07] And I was like, who does that?

[00:54:08] Like, I don't understand.

[00:54:09] Like, if you're actively telling people to fast forward through your content, I don't

[00:54:15] understand.

[00:54:15] Like, we make fun of the people that say they listen to us at 1.5.

[00:54:19] Like, wasn't there a message like, it's weird to listen to you at like normal speed because

[00:54:23] I always listen to you at 1.5?

[00:54:25] But yeah, it's, yeah.

[00:54:27] Anyway, so glad you got through it, man.

[00:54:30] Yeah.

[00:54:31] But this is just a terribly made movie like Amrita said, right?

[00:54:34] Um, but I just want to interject here.

[00:54:39] Sorry.

[00:54:40] I just want to interject here that, um, I actually listen to podcasts at 1.5 speed.

[00:54:47] So, uh, I, I feel those of you that do like listen to the podcast on 1.5 or even two.

[00:54:56] But I get it.

[00:54:57] I get you do it.

[00:54:58] I get.

[00:54:58] Like, I understand.

[00:55:00] But if the content creator himself is saying, listen to it at 1.5, that's the odd choice

[00:55:07] I'm saying, you know, like if people do it in secret, that's fine.

[00:55:10] Don't boast about it.

[00:55:12] Yes.

[00:55:13] Yes.

[00:55:13] Please don't listen to us in like 2x.

[00:55:15] Like, please listen to us in normal speed.

[00:55:17] This is the official standard.

[00:55:23] Um, yeah.

[00:55:24] So, uh, I would, I just want to talk about this Gundagardi of the 80s, right?

[00:55:28] Um, because you have Raza Murad and Gulshan Grover and Debu being full on Gundes, right?

[00:55:35] But it's like a weird kind of Gundapan in the 80s, right?

[00:55:39] Yeah.

[00:55:40] Because like, so they, when they introduce Raza Murad, for example, and they want to tell

[00:55:45] you like, you know, here is a very zalim kind of Ibelin.

[00:55:49] He beats a budgie to death with his tennis racket and then feeds the dead budgie to his

[00:55:59] Alsatian.

[00:56:00] And I'm like, oh, what was happening in the 80s?

[00:56:06] Like, that, I don't think we make that grade of cocaine anymore, you know?

[00:56:10] Like, I don't, I don't understand.

[00:56:14] Like, it's just all really weird.

[00:56:16] Yeah.

[00:56:17] Although, I was, I thought like, that's how people just had dog food in the 80s.

[00:56:22] Like, you know, like, Joby Aspas, Mimila.

[00:56:24] Don't they like hunt, like, mouses and then eat them?

[00:56:28] I don't have pets.

[00:56:29] I'm not very a pet guy.

[00:56:32] Why would a dog hunt a mouse?

[00:56:36] That's like, that's a cat.

[00:56:40] I don't know, man.

[00:56:41] I'm not sure dogs are that discerning, man.

[00:56:44] Like, I've seen them eat their own feces.

[00:56:46] So I'm not like, a mouse is a step up, I would say.

[00:56:51] Why are we having a mouse conversation?

[00:56:53] Let's not have more mouse conversations.

[00:56:55] We've had the best mouse conversation on this episode, on the show already.

[00:57:01] It was a real.

[00:57:04] But yeah, yeah, he is very evil.

[00:57:07] I was just like, who cleans the tennis racket after the bhaji has been like smooched?

[00:57:11] Like, that's my question.

[00:57:13] He's got plenty of servants to do that.

[00:57:19] Minions?

[00:57:20] Yeah, yeah, he does.

[00:57:21] He does.

[00:57:22] But also just the way he dresses.

[00:57:24] He feels like, A, he's very Sarjan coded, first of all.

[00:57:27] We're talking about Debu, then we can also talk about Sarjan.

[00:57:31] And then, he feels more like a politician than a gunda, right?

[00:57:34] Like, they really say that he's a murderer.

[00:57:38] But yeah, he's just quite well dressed.

[00:57:40] He's also getting invited to inaugurate melas and everything, right?

[00:57:44] Which eventually, you know, pays off in the end.

[00:57:47] And it's like, why is an undisputed underworld king, you know, inaugurating melas?

[00:57:55] I'm not sure.

[00:57:56] Disney melas.

[00:57:57] Yeah.

[00:57:58] And he comes in with comedic material when he's doing the inauguration.

[00:58:03] Like, he has jokes, you know?

[00:58:04] So, he's like, yeah.

[00:58:05] He has Hitler jokes.

[00:58:06] He seems to be like a friend.

[00:58:07] He has Hitler jokes.

[00:58:12] Yeah.

[00:58:13] Yeah.

[00:58:14] So, he comes prepared.

[00:58:15] So, I was like, what kind?

[00:58:16] Like, also, like, remember that scene in Singham Returns where Amrita, obviously, you have not seen this scene.

[00:58:24] And we didn't discuss it last time.

[00:58:25] There's a sequence where Ajay Devgan is talking to his son.

[00:58:30] And his son explains the concept of a situationship.

[00:58:35] Situationship.

[00:58:36] And he learns that word.

[00:58:38] And then he tells his superior about situationship.

[00:58:41] And we all laugh because that is comedy, you know?

[00:58:45] And here, it was like Raza Murad had just picked up street lingo.

[00:58:49] And he was like, wo khar chogaya.

[00:58:51] You know what that means?

[00:58:52] Wo khar chogaya?

[00:58:54] I was like, yes.

[00:58:56] Everybody understands.

[00:58:57] Like, this lingo is not that coded.

[00:59:01] I thought you were going to say about, you know, randomly Raza Murad bonding with his would-be-in-law.

[00:59:08] That is Om Shivpuri.

[00:59:10] Like, business partner Seh Rish Tidari and all of that.

[00:59:13] And he's oversharing that in his javan.

[00:59:16] He fell in love with the Kamvali Bhai.

[00:59:20] And his father married the Kamvali Bhai.

[00:59:22] And he's like, after that, after when she got married.

[00:59:27] And then when he saw her, he was like, he felt awkward or something.

[00:59:32] And I'm like, why are you sharing this with us?

[00:59:34] I don't want to know this.

[00:59:36] But then there's also the realization that Juhi's dad goes through.

[00:59:42] Where he's like, there's like a freeze frame as he's having an internal dialogue.

[00:59:48] And the internal dialogue is like, she is my daughter.

[00:59:52] She is not money that I want to invest.

[00:59:55] I shouldn't do this to my daughter.

[01:00:00] But also, how many of them are looking good.

[01:00:03] And clearly they had no plan for the sequence.

[01:00:06] So they didn't even shoot the scene where he realizes something.

[01:00:10] It just freeze frames.

[01:00:12] I was like, what's happening?

[01:00:13] Is my server rebuffing?

[01:00:15] Like, what's buffering again?

[01:00:17] Like, what's happening?

[01:00:18] And they just have this narration going on for like very long.

[01:00:20] It's like a three-minute speech he has with himself, you know?

[01:00:24] Like, sometimes you have it.

[01:00:25] You go into a room and you forgot.

[01:00:27] Where did I put that?

[01:00:29] Oh, I forgot it there.

[01:00:30] But it's like four minutes of it.

[01:00:31] Like, that's not the way people think about things.

[01:00:33] This is how you solve problems.

[01:00:35] Oh my God.

[01:00:37] I have to remind you what happens just before the scene as well.

[01:00:40] When Razamroff makes that call to Bob.

[01:00:43] He's come to his telescopic gun at Hotel Blue Diamond.

[01:00:48] Yes.

[01:00:49] So Bob Christo shows up in this movie.

[01:00:54] So the sequence is, they want to assassinate Amir Khan in a party.

[01:01:01] Bob Christo comes in like he's the ghost of a Victorian child dressed with like a cricket uniform.

[01:01:08] And he has like the biggest rifle.

[01:01:12] Like the room.

[01:01:13] Yeah, he comes in with a rifle and then he goes behind the people and he wants to hide and shoot Amir from there.

[01:01:19] The room is not that big.

[01:01:21] The rifle is huge.

[01:01:23] The rifle is half of the size of the room.

[01:01:25] It's like, how is Bob Christo going to escape this situation?

[01:01:33] He's like the opposite of a covert assassin.

[01:01:35] Like, first of all, why is this huge man dressed like a child?

[01:01:40] Why is he bringing this sniper rifle?

[01:01:44] No, but like also during the song, like, you know, so it's a party.

[01:01:49] It's a Tadzma song.

[01:01:50] It's the Tadzma song.

[01:01:52] Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.

[01:01:53] Which is an engagement song, right?

[01:01:55] Like it's not a birthday song.

[01:01:56] It was supposed to be the engagement song.

[01:01:59] But then...

[01:01:59] It's a birthday song somehow.

[01:02:02] I think that somebody's birthday day is being celebrated.

[01:02:07] It's also a defiant song, which is one of my favorite tropes in Bollywood.

[01:02:11] Yeah.

[01:02:11] So, yeah.

[01:02:13] So, like, doing the thing, like, you know, like, he's brought, like, some gift or something

[01:02:19] for Juhi and Gulshan Grover who are, like, announcing their engagement.

[01:02:23] And then Gulshan's...

[01:02:26] Again, this is a man who we see, like, you know, casually, like, beating up people, robbing

[01:02:32] people, murdering people.

[01:02:34] His dad is apparently a crime lord.

[01:02:37] And then he and his friends are, like, literally, like, pantsing Amir at this party.

[01:02:45] And they're just literally going, like, na, na, na, na, na, to Amir.

[01:02:52] And Amir is just like, oh, no.

[01:02:54] I have to sit here and be humiliated like this.

[01:02:57] And so then Juhi decides to sing a song about, like, how she loves Amir and she'll only love

[01:03:04] Amir ever.

[01:03:05] And then Amir basically has this expression on his face that all of you will remember from,

[01:03:11] like, the opening scenes of Andaz Apna Apna.

[01:03:16] He is like, you know, you know, like when he is imagining that Juhi Chawla, the movie star,

[01:03:23] is in love with him.

[01:03:24] And he's just like, aha, you see, I'm quite the thing.

[01:03:28] And that's basically the expression that he has during this song.

[01:03:31] And I was just, like, laughing my butt off during this song.

[01:03:37] But yeah, this is Sujoy's favorite song.

[01:03:39] Same here because it's one of those tropes, again, in older movies where, like, everybody

[01:03:45] chills while the song is playing.

[01:03:47] Like, so, no, like, these bullies, these assassins.

[01:03:50] No, no, we're going to sing a song.

[01:03:52] Like, let's listen to the song first.

[01:03:56] We'll see.

[01:03:57] Yeah, exactly.

[01:04:00] Bappi Dali has been a witch from somewhere.

[01:04:01] You know, like, he's going to get a witch from somewhere.

[01:04:04] By the way, this whole album is plagiarism.

[01:04:07] Every song is copied.

[01:04:08] And even the background score of this movie is plagiarism, where they took all of John

[01:04:13] Williams' greatest hits.

[01:04:15] So, E.T. is in there.

[01:04:16] Chariots of Fire is in there.

[01:04:18] Star Wars and Superman is in there.

[01:04:21] And it makes no sense.

[01:04:23] It makes no sense.

[01:04:25] It doesn't go with the theme of the...

[01:04:26] Yeah, sometimes, like, they don't even, like, bother, like, adapting it.

[01:04:31] They'll just, like, play the actual song.

[01:04:33] Like, when Aamir has his first aborted, like, party.

[01:04:37] Like, congratulation party.

[01:04:39] Like, I forget which song it was.

[01:04:41] But it's, like, one of those giant 80s hits.

[01:04:44] They play Careless Whisper.

[01:04:46] Oh, it's Careless Whisper.

[01:04:48] Yeah.

[01:04:50] And it's, like, the actual song.

[01:04:52] Like, it's not even, like, just the instrumentals or, like, somebody...

[01:04:55] It's just not with us just sitting with a tape recorder and a pressing player.

[01:05:00] Yeah.

[01:05:02] What the... bro?

[01:05:03] Times in the 80s where they wanted to have some breakdancing, but they could only find

[01:05:07] one breakdancer because they didn't have any.

[01:05:10] So, there's one guy that does breakdancing.

[01:05:12] So, in that Careless Whisper moment, he's doing the saxophone, but he's also doing a

[01:05:16] little breakdancing while he's doing the saxophone.

[01:05:19] It's hilarious.

[01:05:20] It's the best.

[01:05:23] You know, like, my favorite, like, pieces of trivia about this film is that after, like,

[01:05:29] this film had come out and everything, like, maybe two years later, Vijay Benedict stopped

[01:05:34] singing because his brother got murdered by the mafia in Germany.

[01:05:39] Oh, man.

[01:05:40] Which is, like, the most random thing that ever happened.

[01:05:43] Like, sorry to this man and his, like, family.

[01:05:45] I'm sure it was traumatic.

[01:05:46] But it's also, like, why did you stop singing?

[01:05:49] Well, because the mafia murdered my brother in Germany.

[01:05:53] I'm just, like, where does that even come from?

[01:05:55] Who's going to believe that?

[01:05:56] It's like...

[01:05:56] I know.

[01:05:58] It's like you don't want to walk anymore.

[01:06:00] Like, could you be?

[01:06:01] Like, seriously?

[01:06:01] So, now he's apparently a gospel singer.

[01:06:06] And, like, he, like, that's what he does.

[01:06:08] And then Parvati Khan, like, she got, like, married or whatever.

[01:06:13] And then now she is singing bhajans and doing saksang in Pihar jail as their spiritual advisor.

[01:06:22] And I'm like, what happened on the sets of, like, you know, like, this guy's films?

[01:06:30] Because, my God, that's, like, intense, bro.

[01:06:34] It is more wild.

[01:06:35] Like, they don't make the cocaine as much as they did.

[01:06:39] Yeah.

[01:06:40] Exactly.

[01:06:42] Literally.

[01:06:44] The funny part is also, right, we're talking about the songs, right?

[01:06:47] But equally important is the lead-up to these songs or how they position them in the movies.

[01:06:54] Because, obviously, like, we're talking about the Party Defiant song that Juhi is singing.

[01:06:59] There's a whole sequence of bullying before that and the Taj Mahal and stuff like that.

[01:07:03] But I also want to talk about Disco Dandia for a second.

[01:07:06] Because that was the most famous song of this movie.

[01:07:10] In Pakistan, it was a huge thing.

[01:07:11] People were Disco Dandia-ing in the weddings and things like that.

[01:07:16] But I never...

[01:07:17] And it looks like a happy song.

[01:07:19] It's going to be a dance, Disco Dandia.

[01:07:21] Young people love, love, love.

[01:07:23] But I didn't have never seen the movie.

[01:07:25] So, I didn't know the lead-up to this song.

[01:07:28] If Juhi Chawla doesn't come to the party, Amir will commit suicide there and then.

[01:07:34] That is the setup to this song.

[01:07:36] And I was like...

[01:07:36] By the time the song finishes, if she doesn't arrive,

[01:07:40] he's going to kill himself there.

[01:07:42] It's just nuts.

[01:07:43] Yeah.

[01:07:44] Exactly.

[01:07:45] And he says this to a man who's the organizer of the Dandia,

[01:07:50] who's like a bald man.

[01:07:51] We've seen him like a supporting actor in a lot of things.

[01:07:54] He has a very Kallumama type of vibe going on.

[01:07:57] He is fully...

[01:07:58] Like, I don't know why in Disco Dandia,

[01:08:01] he gets so much footage in the song.

[01:08:03] Like, he's there for like 40% of the song is him doing Disco Dandia.

[01:08:08] I was like, who is this actor?

[01:08:09] Why is he so much in this?

[01:08:11] And why is he so happy that Amir is going to do a public suicide?

[01:08:16] That man probably was one of the financiers.

[01:08:19] And they were just like, hey, if you give me like X amount of money,

[01:08:22] I'll put you in the...

[01:08:24] And it's 100% what happened.

[01:08:27] So, and the other one is the...

[01:08:29] The other supporting actor I want to point out is...

[01:08:34] You know, like when we see the Gundagardi...

[01:08:37] By the way, Gulshan Grover...

[01:08:39] So, Gulshan Grover is this Gundag, right?

[01:08:41] But he's really into partying, first of all.

[01:08:43] Like, and he...

[01:08:44] But he also needs a lot of support from everybody around him.

[01:08:47] So, he'll come into a disco, beat somebody up.

[01:08:49] And then he'll be like, friends!

[01:08:51] Friends!

[01:08:52] I have done it all, friends!

[01:08:53] He calls everybody friends.

[01:08:55] Which I thought...

[01:08:56] D called it.

[01:08:58] D fell.

[01:08:59] But it's all friends.

[01:09:01] I thought he was hilarious.

[01:09:03] So, they beat up this guy who's a supporting dance...

[01:09:09] He loves swimming.

[01:09:10] He doesn't want anybody to leave the swimming pool.

[01:09:12] He'll do swimming.

[01:09:14] But...

[01:09:14] So, they beat up this guy.

[01:09:16] And it's that guy who's like a background dancer...

[01:09:18] Which I...

[01:09:19] He's my favorite background dancer of the 80s.

[01:09:22] Do you know who I'm talking about?

[01:09:23] He was in Chalbaz.

[01:09:25] He was in Hava Hawaii in Mr. India.

[01:09:29] You know the guy?

[01:09:30] No?

[01:09:30] Like, I'll have to put up a picture.

[01:09:32] He has one of those faces that I always remember.

[01:09:36] And Gulshan Grover beats him up.

[01:09:38] And that's kind of the setup to the first song.

[01:09:42] It's like the lead up to all of these happy songs are very, very violent.

[01:09:47] Yeah.

[01:09:48] I don't know his name.

[01:09:49] Yeah.

[01:09:50] But he's like literally in every 80s song he's there...

[01:09:53] And he has just like a very visual face where it grabs you and it's like...

[01:09:58] How can this man be a dancer?

[01:10:01] But he's a dancer in every movie.

[01:10:03] It's just...

[01:10:03] Yeah.

[01:10:04] Hilarious.

[01:10:04] I'll send you the picture, Amrita.

[01:10:05] You know exactly who I am.

[01:10:06] A lot of trivia to him.

[01:10:08] I think the last time I saw him was in Bantir Babli where Dharak Dharak happens that he's one

[01:10:14] of the guys who's playing Tash and Abhishek Bachchan robs him.

[01:10:18] So, he's one of the background artists or...

[01:10:21] Yeah.

[01:10:22] He has aged obviously.

[01:10:23] But he's there.

[01:10:24] He's omnipresent in all these movies.

[01:10:26] He's still getting scammed and beaten up.

[01:10:29] One of the funniest things is like...

[01:10:31] So, every time Amr gets beaten up by Gulshan Grover, which happens multiple times, it's always

[01:10:37] in a new location.

[01:10:39] And at some point, they ran out of location.

[01:10:41] So, they just went to a swimming pool and then they climbed up to the diving tower.

[01:10:50] And Gulshan Grover and his entire team are like standing on top of the diving board.

[01:10:56] So, I'm pushing Amr off this diving board.

[01:11:02] And I'm like, why?

[01:11:04] Why did you do that?

[01:11:07] And then they just leave.

[01:11:08] They just leave.

[01:11:09] Like...

[01:11:10] Yeah.

[01:11:10] They just leave.

[01:11:11] And then he gets safe by like, you know, the cleaner man.

[01:11:14] But I was just like thinking if there was an extra...

[01:11:17] Like imagine you go with 30 people on top of the diving board.

[01:11:20] But then you have to climb down 30 people.

[01:11:23] Visually.

[01:11:24] This is a very funny image.

[01:11:26] It would have been like, Gogoji, you're a ghagara kind of a sequel.

[01:11:30] Yeah.

[01:11:30] Plus, they're wearing all of those 80s bad fashion.

[01:11:33] A lot of polyester.

[01:11:34] So, 100% a few people slipped down.

[01:11:36] Like a few broke their pelvis bone on that one.

[01:11:40] Yeah.

[01:11:41] Also, like coming back to Gulshan Grover.

[01:11:44] Like he's a murderous bastard, cocaine head, all of that.

[01:11:48] But he really wants to get married too, you know.

[01:11:50] I think that's always the thing in 80s movies.

[01:11:54] You know, it's that meme of Govinda,

[01:11:57] I just find it hilarious.

[01:11:58] You know, that kind of thing.

[01:12:00] I just find it hilarious.

[01:12:01] There's a point where he...

[01:12:03] Like Raza Murad is just like, what happened?

[01:12:06] Like, what's wrong with you, baby boy?

[01:12:07] And he's like, what is the use of being your son if I can't even like get married to the

[01:12:12] girl I love?

[01:12:14] I'm like, oh wow.

[01:12:17] Yeah.

[01:12:18] My love is my love.

[01:12:19] My love is my love.

[01:12:20] Yeah.

[01:12:22] Yeah, and then it's basically like...

[01:12:25] And he figures that he's not going to marry her.

[01:12:27] So, he's like, I'm going to do public rape today.

[01:12:29] And then Debu is like, no!

[01:12:32] I draw the line at public rape.

[01:12:34] You know?

[01:12:34] So, then he steps up.

[01:12:36] And then there's an insane sequence with the red paint and Dobermans or something like that.

[01:12:42] Remember that?

[01:12:45] I'll just rewind a few scenes before that when he's declared that he's going to publicly

[01:12:51] rape and he says,

[01:12:53] And I'm like, what the hell?

[01:12:56] And then he says,

[01:13:09] But also, I love that...

[01:13:13] In the 80s, if you...

[01:13:14] And well into the 90s, honestly.

[01:13:16] If you wanted to show like somebody is like a hardcore partier, then you basically dress

[01:13:21] like Wham.

[01:13:22] So, Richard Grover is basically for spring...

[01:13:30] What do you call...

[01:13:32] What's his name?

[01:13:33] George Michael.

[01:13:34] He's got a look.

[01:13:35] He's got a look.

[01:13:36] And, you know, he's got like the earring.

[01:13:38] He's got like the zip tops.

[01:13:41] Everything.

[01:13:43] It's a look.

[01:13:45] Also, if you're a gunda, your consumption of soft drinks is very high.

[01:13:50] Like they're just constantly drinking soft drinks.

[01:13:53] They need the energy, Asim.

[01:13:54] Excuse you.

[01:13:56] It was when there was cocaine in Coca-Cola.

[01:14:01] Yeah.

[01:14:02] It's not even Coca-Cola, right?

[01:14:03] It's these like, you know, Indian brands from the 80s that I'm not sure if they exist or not.

[01:14:08] Yeah.

[01:14:09] It's just...

[01:14:10] I just find it hilarious that these gundas are just like, you know, having parties and

[01:14:15] pools and drinking lots of soft drinks, you know?

[01:14:19] Yeah.

[01:14:20] It was a trip.

[01:14:22] Any other sequences that you want to discuss?

[01:14:25] Anything that stand out in Love, Love, Love?

[01:14:28] I'm just so delighted that now that the 80s are over, we don't have the short shots anymore.

[01:14:36] Like, please don't bring them back.

[01:14:37] Like, nobody wants to see that.

[01:14:39] Like, thank you.

[01:14:40] No, thank you.

[01:14:41] I'm just quite excited about the setup of the Mela and the action sequence that happens

[01:14:47] in the Mela.

[01:14:48] But then that whole sequence was, you know, without anything.

[01:14:57] Yeah.

[01:14:58] No, but even like that, there's a fight sequence in a locker room where they have this whole

[01:15:05] build-up where they're taking all of these padlocks and putting them in their towels and

[01:15:09] that's how they're going to beat up.

[01:15:10] But the scene is so badly made that it has no effect.

[01:15:15] Like, there's this 30-second sequence where you see all of these padlocks being in town.

[01:15:20] Yeah.

[01:15:20] I remember seeing something similar in Pool or Karte.

[01:15:23] And I still remember that sequence.

[01:15:25] It was such a badass action sequence.

[01:15:27] And then you have this in comparison.

[01:15:30] And the difference between Pool or Karte and this is just merely a few years.

[01:15:34] You know?

[01:15:35] Yeah.

[01:15:36] Yeah.

[01:15:36] It's just a talent problem.

[01:15:39] And even that chase sequence where Amir is getting chased by a Mad Max-type situation

[01:15:44] car, like a Dodge, and he's running over things and all of that.

[01:15:49] And like, it's just incompetently shot.

[01:15:51] Like, that could have been a good action sequence.

[01:15:53] We've seen that many, many times, right?

[01:15:56] But this is not the case at all.

[01:15:57] And the stunts are real.

[01:15:58] Yeah.

[01:15:58] Just not presented well enough for us to get invested.

[01:16:02] Like, the stakes are high or something.

[01:16:04] Yeah.

[01:16:05] Yeah.

[01:16:06] And I think that just kind of goes about all of the movies.

[01:16:09] The whole movie is like...

[01:16:11] And I understand that it wasn't even a success back in the day.

[01:16:13] Because it shows that it's not made with any love.

[01:16:19] All the love is in the title, but there's no love in the filmmaking.

[01:16:23] And yeah, it's just a careless kind of movie.

[01:16:26] And I think they...

[01:16:26] Apparently, also, they were...

[01:16:28] The director was making another movie.

[01:16:31] And I was reading this on Wikipedia.

[01:16:34] And Aamir had signed Aval Number with Devanand.

[01:16:39] And so, B. Subhash stopped making that other movie he was making with Mithun.

[01:16:47] And decided to shoot this movie quickly before Aval Number came out.

[01:16:52] So, it shows.

[01:16:53] It shows that that's...

[01:16:55] You know, it's a very kind of like speedily, hastily made movie.

[01:16:58] That is just not good.

[01:17:01] And I did not enjoy this movie.

[01:17:04] I did not have any sense of fun or...

[01:17:07] Even for like...

[01:17:08] Jui Chawla is trying and she's beautiful.

[01:17:11] And she's, you know, Jui freshness bubbly.

[01:17:14] But there's nothing for her to work with, right?

[01:17:16] Like she's very confused about what's going on.

[01:17:20] It did make me go watch...

[01:17:23] Have you ever seen the 1984 Miss Universe pageant?

[01:17:28] I've seen the bits with Juhi in it.

[01:17:30] Where she comes and she says like, you know, like I'm from India.

[01:17:34] Like, you know, she says that.

[01:17:35] I remember that particular thing because my cousin, who's like much older than me,

[01:17:41] she was like a huge Juhi Chawla fan.

[01:17:44] And it was like a huge deal when Juhi won like Miss Universe.

[01:17:48] I mean, Miss India.

[01:17:48] And like she went to the competition.

[01:17:51] And I was like a baby at the time.

[01:17:54] But this is like one of my strongest core memories is like my cousin saying,

[01:18:00] look, it's Juhi.

[01:18:01] And like, I love the way that she says,

[01:18:03] I'm from India.

[01:18:05] Namaste.

[01:18:06] And I was like, oh.

[01:18:08] Yeah, it's really cute.

[01:18:10] So like I watched the whole thing.

[01:18:11] Not like the whole thing, but I fast forwarded the pieces where Juhi was on the background

[01:18:17] and things like that.

[01:18:18] And it's just one of those 80s productions, right?

[01:18:21] It's insane to watch.

[01:18:22] But she has a swimsuit sequence because that's something that they have in these pageants.

[01:18:28] So she's on a yacht and she like turns around and flips her hair.

[01:18:31] And so she's not and they have musical dance numbers.

[01:18:35] So they have like all of the Miss Worlds with background dancers are singing all night long.

[01:18:42] Blanking on the name now.

[01:18:43] Lionel Richie's all night long.

[01:18:45] Lionel Richie.

[01:18:45] Like with 100 people on stage.

[01:18:47] And Juhi Chawla is one of them.

[01:18:49] She's like all night longing in the background and stuff like that.

[01:18:52] So it's kind of cute.

[01:18:53] And then she didn't get shortlisted to the 10 contenders, final contenders.

[01:18:59] But you see her in the background dressed in this awful blue maxi.

[01:19:04] So there's a few shots of her and she just looks like baby Juhi, man.

[01:19:08] It looks.

[01:19:08] So the only good thing about watching this movie was watching the tough turf trailer

[01:19:14] and going back and watching Juhi Chawla's 1984 Miss Universe pageant,

[01:19:20] which is available in its entirety on YouTube.

[01:19:23] So check it out with like speed times five if you want.

[01:19:27] Just stop at Juhi.

[01:19:28] And I think it's just kind of a cool kind of thing.

[01:19:32] Yeah.

[01:19:33] Sujo, any final thoughts on Love, Love, Love?

[01:19:35] Yeah.

[01:19:36] My final thought is there is a lot of moments in this movie which remind you of the era

[01:19:42] where when it is set in 80s Mumbai or Bombay then.

[01:19:48] Because there is a lot of times when Juhi and Amir's character just miss each other.

[01:19:55] Like they are not able to meet up because Juhi gets controlled by her brother,

[01:20:02] by Gulshan, by her father.

[01:20:04] And a lot of times Amir is just, you know, stood up and he's rejected and he's waiting all night long.

[01:20:10] And all of this could have been solved with just a mere WhatsApp message

[01:20:13] and it would not happen in today's time.

[01:20:17] So yeah, Love, Love, Love is a very 80s movie.

[01:20:20] And even then, even as an 80s movie, I don't like it.

[01:20:23] This is why people are divorcing left and right, right?

[01:20:26] We're not waiting for each other in parks anymore.

[01:20:28] There's no buildup.

[01:20:29] That's why love has been destroyed.

[01:20:31] These people had three times as much love, you know,

[01:20:33] clearly in the title.

[01:20:35] Amrita.

[01:20:36] Even Aum Shivpuri ends with love, love, love.

[01:20:39] And that's the end of the movie.

[01:20:41] Like, thank you for reminding us that.

[01:20:43] Yeah.

[01:20:45] Insert Leonardo DiCaprio meme.

[01:20:48] Yeah, like my...

[01:20:50] Yeah, mehri zindagi ka ehi maksad hai.

[01:20:52] And that is avoid, avoid, avoid, love, love, love.

[01:20:55] Like it is just horrendous.

[01:20:57] Like I can't stand it.

[01:20:58] Yeah.

[01:20:59] I wonder, I wonder if there's Aamir fans that like this movie,

[01:21:04] if they hold any like positivity towards it.

[01:21:07] I would love to hear.

[01:21:08] There are, there are.

[01:21:10] Because on YouTube, which is where I saw this fine movie,

[01:21:13] it is there in all its glory.

[01:21:15] You can watch it if you want to.

[01:21:17] But on YouTube, there are like people out there who are just like,

[01:21:20] this is my favorite movie.

[01:21:21] I love it.

[01:21:23] Aamir is so good in this.

[01:21:25] There's like a lot of like Turkish people under like,

[01:21:29] and like Russians, I guess,

[01:21:31] because it's written like Cyrillic alphabets.

[01:21:33] Like, I don't know who are just like,

[01:21:35] I don't know what they're writing

[01:21:36] because they're writing in like Turkish and in Russian.

[01:21:39] But apparently this was again, like, you know,

[01:21:42] like Disco Dancer,

[01:21:43] like he apparently was making movies

[01:21:45] for a very specific Cold War audience.

[01:21:48] And they really like this movie, apparently.

[01:21:52] Like it's their, like Sujoy,

[01:21:54] it is their core memory of their childhood.

[01:21:56] And they're all delighted to find it on YouTube.

[01:22:01] But yeah, there are love, love, love enthusiasts.

[01:22:04] I'm not sure, Amrita.

[01:22:06] I think it's just Putin and Erdogan

[01:22:07] sharing nuclear codes on YouTube comment pages.

[01:22:10] I think that's what's happening here.

[01:22:12] Nobody likes this movie.

[01:22:14] Impossible.

[01:22:19] Impossible.

[01:22:21] The CIA will never find us.

[01:22:24] Exactly.

[01:22:25] Who will come here?

[01:22:29] But yeah, like I'm saying,

[01:22:32] Bhee Subhash was the Raja Mauli of the 80s.

[01:22:35] Like he had some secret formula for these movies

[01:22:38] and they were just like hitting.

[01:22:40] But yeah, I don't know if this movie hit for you.

[01:22:45] Let us know what you liked about it.

[01:22:47] I'm fascinated to hear about it.

[01:22:50] But as always, Patreon is a good place.

[01:23:12] and watch the footage there.

[01:23:13] I think we're going to upload the video too.

[01:23:15] So that's going to be cool.

[01:23:17] And yeah, that's it for this episode.

[01:23:19] Sujoy, where can people find you online?

[01:23:20] You can find me on Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok at 93K.

[01:23:24] Also on Blue Sky as 93K.

[01:23:26] And you can follow Khandan Podcast on all our socials

[01:23:29] at Khandan Podcast.

[01:23:30] Amrita?

[01:23:31] You can find me on Blue Sky at Amrita IQ.

[01:23:34] I seem to be spending more and more time on Blue Sky these days.

[01:23:39] I still am there on Twitter,

[01:23:42] but it's anyone's guess how long I'm going to be there.

[01:23:45] And honestly, I'm not really posting anything much over there

[01:23:48] with Elon's new terms of service going into effect.

[01:23:53] So if you want to just see what I repost,

[01:23:56] come meet me on Twitter.

[01:23:57] If you'd like to follow my thoughts,

[01:23:59] then follow me on Blue Sky.

[01:24:01] Yes, I am also on Blue Sky now.

[01:24:04] Apparently, it's just Asim Burni on there.

[01:24:07] I would say I'm not going to leave Twitter.

[01:24:10] I'm just saying it out

[01:24:11] because there's a lot of Palestinian voices

[01:24:14] that are still on Twitter

[01:24:15] and that's their way to amplify their voices.

[01:24:19] And I want to make this point quickly.

[01:24:21] We can't just be fucking privileged people

[01:24:23] and just say I'm out of here.

[01:24:25] You know, and this is something

[01:24:27] that I have told many, many people.

[01:24:28] Amrita, you made this point back when the genocide started

[01:24:32] like a year ago,

[01:24:33] is that these people are going through the worst thing ever.

[01:24:37] At least we can be their witnesses, right?

[01:24:40] So I've said this quote to many other people

[01:24:43] and I'm not going to let that go.

[01:24:45] So I will not let go of Twitter,

[01:24:47] although I am on Blue Sky.

[01:24:49] But I just have an issue of all of us just leaving

[01:24:52] and not being able to amplify those voices.

[01:24:55] So I am on Blue Sky.

[01:24:58] I'm also on Twitter.

[01:24:59] Drop us an email at youpodcasting at gmail.com

[01:25:01] and thank you for listening.
