[00:00:06] Hello and welcome to today's podcast. I am Coach Sonal Chauhan and I am thrilled that you have chosen to spend this time with me as we explore a powerful, often overlooked way to build resilience, especially in the high-pressure environment like the IT industry.
[00:00:25] Now I know that resilience is a word we hear a lot about these days and how important it is, how we need it to cope up with the challenges and the stress.
[00:00:38] But what if I told you that there is a way to cultivate resilience that's both calming and creative, a way that can seamlessly fit into your daily lifestyle and provide not just stress relief but the lasting emotional strength.
[00:00:57] Yes, I am talking about the painting. Now before we raise an eyebrow, wondering how art and resilience fit together, let me take you on a journey, a journey into the healing power of the creativity and how it can change the way you approach the challenges in your life, especially if you are in the high-pressure IT environment.
[00:01:22] Let's start with a question that might be on your mind.
[00:01:25] How can painting help to build resilience in such a demanding, high-pressure world?
[00:01:32] Well, think about it. The IT industry is notorious for its deadlines, the constant need to innovate and the pressure to deliver flawless results.
[00:01:45] It's an environment where mistakes can feel monumental and the stress is the daily companion.
[00:01:52] Painting, however, offers the unique counterbalance to that intensity.
[00:01:58] When you paint, you step into the space where you are in control but at the same time you are allowed to make mistakes also.
[00:02:08] And those mistakes are beautiful, colorful mistakes that can lead to something unexpected and wonderful.
[00:02:16] And this process of painting trains our mind to handle pressure in a different way.
[00:02:24] It teaches you that not everything has to be perfect at the first time.
[00:02:29] Resilience is the build through repetition, through typing, adjusting and finding a solution in a creative and the less rigid environment.
[00:02:42] But it's not just about learning to accept imperfections.
[00:02:48] Regular painting sessions can do wonders for your stress management skills.
[00:02:54] Imagine coming home after a long day of coding, troubleshooting and meetings.
[00:03:00] And your mind is buzzing, your body is tensed and the stress feels almost like suffocating.
[00:03:08] Now picture yourself sitting down with the blank canvas.
[00:03:12] As your brush strokes the canvas, each line and color acts as a release for the tension built up throughout the day.
[00:03:20] The repetition, rhythmic movements of the painting can calm your nervous system, slow down your breathing pattern and creating a meditative state of the flow.
[00:03:33] In that flow, stress begins to dissolve.
[00:03:37] You are no longer focused on the problems of the day.
[00:03:41] Instead, you are immersed in the colors, textures and the act of creation itself.
[00:03:49] Over time, as you practice this regularly, you will find that your capacity to manage stress improves not just during the painting but throughout your work day.
[00:04:01] You will carry that calm, centered energy with you and it will become your anchor when things get tough.
[00:04:09] Now let's talk about the setbacks.
[00:04:12] Because we all face them, especially in the fast-paced world of IT.
[00:04:19] Whether it's a failed project, a bug that seems impossible to fix or simply feeling stuck in your career.
[00:04:27] Setbacks are inevitable.
[00:04:30] But here is where painting can offer a surprising lesson.
[00:04:35] When you are painting, not every stroke is perfect.
[00:04:39] Sometimes you make mistakes or the colors don't blend the way you are imagined.
[00:04:46] But here is the beauty of it.
[00:04:48] You can always add another layer, change directions or incorporate that mistake into something new.
[00:04:57] It teaches you to be flexible, to adapt and most importantly, to keep going even when things don't go according to you.
[00:05:07] This is the essence of resilience.
[00:05:10] The ability to bounce back, to adjust and to find beauty in the unexpected.
[00:05:17] Every time you pick up the brush after the mistake on the canvas, you are reinforcing your ability to do the same in your life also.
[00:05:28] Painting also promotes mental toughness in the ways that might surprise you.
[00:05:34] When you engage in the creative process, you are not just expressing yourself.
[00:05:40] You are also building focus, patience and the resilience.
[00:05:46] It's not just easy to start with the blank canvas and turn it into something meaningful.
[00:05:52] It requires you to push through frustration, uncertainty and the self-doubt.
[00:05:59] In the IT world where mental toughness is crucial, painting can act as a quiet and powerful training ground.
[00:06:07] It helps you to develop the mental stamina to keep going when things are hard,
[00:06:12] to stay focused on the bigger picture even when the details aren't perfect.
[00:06:18] And what about developing a more positive outlook in challenging times?
[00:06:23] That's one of the greatest gifts painting can offer.
[00:06:27] When life feels overwhelming, it's easy to get caught up in the negativity and the stress.
[00:06:34] But painting gives you the outlet to shift your mindset.
[00:06:38] As you create, you are reminded of the beauty that still exists, even the toughest times.
[00:06:46] The act of painting can transform your mood,
[00:06:50] help you to process difficult emotions and offer a sense of accomplishment.
[00:06:54] You begin to see challenges as opportunities to grow, both on the canvas and in our life.
[00:07:04] Now you might be wondering what are some simple painting exercises to enhance emotional resilience.
[00:07:12] It doesn't have to be complicated.
[00:07:14] Start with something very simple as a color.
[00:07:19] Choose colors that represent how you are feeling in the moment and let them guide your brush.
[00:07:26] On try painting repetitive pattern, this can be incredibly calming and grounding.
[00:07:32] Almost like a visual meditation.
[00:07:36] Another powerful exercise is to paint a landscape that represents how you want to feel.
[00:07:42] A calm beach, a peaceful mountain or a blooming garden.
[00:07:47] And these exercises aren't just about creating an art.
[00:07:51] They are about creating a space for you to process emotions and build emotional strength.
[00:07:58] As for now, how often you should paint to see improvements in your resilience?
[00:08:05] The answer is,
[00:08:07] As often as you can.
[00:08:09] Even just a 15 to 20 minutes a day can make a significant difference.
[00:08:15] The key is consistency.
[00:08:17] The more regularly you engage with the painting, the more you will notice its effects on your mental and emotional well-being.
[00:08:28] It's like any skill.
[00:08:30] The more you practice, the stronger you become.
[00:08:34] Painting can also help you to stay calm under pressure at work.
[00:08:39] The mindfulness that comes with painting, the way it trains you to focus on the present moment,
[00:08:46] can be carried over into the high stressful situations.
[00:08:50] When you have practiced staying calm and present on the canvas,
[00:08:56] it becomes easier to do same even when deadlines are looming or the problem needs solving.
[00:09:03] You can return to that same as a calm state even when the pressure is on.
[00:09:10] I know some of you might be thinking this all sounds wonderful,
[00:09:15] but how do I fit painting into my already packed schedule?
[00:09:20] The beauty of painting is that it doesn't have to take up hours of your time.
[00:09:26] You can incorporate it into your routine in the small manageable ways.
[00:09:31] Maybe it's a quick 10-minute sketch during your lunch break or a 20-minute session after work to unwind.
[00:09:40] The key is to make it a priority and to view it not as an extra task,
[00:09:46] but as an essential part of your self-care and the resilience building toolkit.
[00:09:52] Lastly, can painting help you to manage work-related anxiety and burnout?
[00:09:57] Absolutely, when work feels overwhelming, the anxiety starts creeping in,
[00:10:03] painting offers a safe space for you to release those feelings.
[00:10:08] It's a non-verbal way of processing your stress, allowing your mind and body to reset.
[00:10:15] Burnout often comes from the lack of balance,
[00:10:18] and the painting helps to restore that balance by giving you a creative outlet,
[00:10:24] a space where you can recharge or reconnect with yourself.
[00:10:29] Now that we have explored how painting can build resilience,
[00:10:35] and it can also improve stress management and help you to stay calm under pressure,
[00:10:41] I want to invite you to take this journey even further.
