Sometimes, the real bottleneck in an MSME isn’t a broken system—it’s the founder. In this episode, I share 5 patterns through which founders unintentionally become the biggest constraint in their own business. From decision hoarding to fear of delegation, we’ll uncover what’s holding you back and how to step into the role of a true growth-oriented leader.
[00:00:02] Namaste and Welcome to the MSME Growth Hub Podcast. I am your host Abanibhusan Bera, AI-driven MSME Growth Strategist and Sales Coach. And today I want to begin with a truth that might sting a little but can set you free. You might be the biggest bottleneck in your business right now.
[00:00:29] Yes, this is the thing I want to mean it. This isn't about blame, it's about awareness. In today's episode we are going to uncover 5 common ways founders unintentionally slow their own growth and more importantly how to shift out of that pattern with clarity and confidence.
[00:00:56] Here is the paradox of MSME Success. You built the business with passion, you carried it through early chaos, you wore every hat and made it work. But that same heroic energy becomes the limitation as you grow. Why?
[00:01:18] Because growth requires letting go of control, redefining your role, scaling decisions through systems, not people pleasing, shifting from doer to designer. What made you successful as a founder may now be slowing you down as a leader. The first tip is awareness.
[00:01:44] Let's explore 5 bottleneck behaviors that silently stall MSMEs. Let's walk through a use case you will find deeply relatable. An MSME in the B2B industrial automation space had grown steadily to 80 lakhs per month.
[00:02:05] The founder personally approved every proposal, reviewed every vendor contract, sat in on 90% of client calls, was the first responder on Slack. The team respected him but felt blocked. Deadlines lagged, sales slowed, morale dipped.
[00:02:32] One day a mid-level team leader told him, Sir, your presence is so important, but sometimes your availability delays us. That hit hard. He paused, reflected, and realized he was afraid of quality sleeping.
[00:02:56] He never built SOPs because he thought he would always be available. And finally he equated control with care. Over the next 90 days, he defined decision boundaries, delegated approvals below 5 lakhs, moved from Slack to structured standups, took a one-week break to let the team step up.
[00:03:26] Now what happened? Projects moved faster, team morale improved, client satisfaction scores rose, founder felt relief and focus. He didn't just step back, he stepped into the role of designer, not doer.
[00:03:51] Projects moved faster, and the team has been able to do it. 1. Decision Holding Every decision flows through you. Pricing, design, delivery, marketing. Result? Team slows down, you burn out. Now how to fix it? 2. Define a decision matrix who decides what.
[00:04:17] 3. Use filters like impact, risk, frequency. 4. Install 80% autonomy with 20% review. Why? Because empowerment is faster than micro precision. 2. Fear of delegation You believe no one will do it like me. You try to clone yourself instead of building systems.
[00:04:45] You need to fix in this way. Document how you do it. Train once. Record the session. Use a swoppy plus feedback loop instead of perfection. Because delegation is a process, not an abdication. 3. Lack of focused calendar blocks. You start the day in WhatsApp, end it in Zoom.
[00:05:13] No deep work, just reaction. Fix it by creating CO hours, 90 minutes per day for strategy. No meetings before 11 am. Weekly clarity sessions to zoom out. Remember, your calendar reflects your leadership zone. 4. Being the emotional anchor for everything.
[00:05:39] You are the cheerleader, therapist, mentor, and fire extinguisher. Fix it by building peer leadership inside your team. 5. By designing a weekly rhythm for reflection, not rescue. 6. By letting people solve before they scale it. 7. You need to remember, you are not just a founder, you are a culture architect.
[00:06:06] 8. No role evolution plan. 9. You are doing the same things you did 2 years ago. Fix it by writing a quarterly let go and grow list. 10. Ask what should I not be doing at this stage? 11. Replace low leverage work with vision building. 11. Remember, your business grows at the speed of your role upgrade.
[00:06:35] 11. Now let's revisit the Bhagavad Gita where Krishna guides Arjuna not just as a warrior but as a leader. 11. In chapter 3 verse 19 it says, 12. Therefore, without being attached to the fruits of activities, 13. One should act as a matter of duty. 13. What does this mean for founders? 14. Detach from control. 14. Do what your role now demands.
[00:07:03] 15. Trust the structure you are building and let go so the system can grow. 15. True leadership is not about being involved in everything. 15. It's about designing systems that perform without your presence. 15. Here is a 5 step reset plan you can apply this month. 16. Step 1. Identify your personal bottleneck.
[00:07:31] 16. Ask what am I holding onto that slows others down? 17. List top 3 such things. 17. Step 2. Create a weekly decision map. 18. What must I still decide? 19. What can be routed to team leaders? 19. Use the rule. If someone else can do it 70% as well, delegate it. 19. Block CEO time. Minimum 90 minutes per day.
[00:08:01] 20. Tasks should be strategic thinking, data review and design. 20. This is non-negotiable. 21. Install a leadership review ritual. 21. Weekly 30-minute session with key team members. 22. What's stuck? 22. What's scalable? 23. Where's the chaos? 23. Don't solve, but guide.
[00:08:32] 23. Step number 5 is practice non-attached presence. 24. Be involved without entanglement. 25. Ask more questions, but give fewer instructions. 25. Replace let me do it with show me how you plan to do it. 25. Let's close this powerful session. 25. Founders often become their own bottlenecks without realizing it.
[00:09:01] 26. You can break the pattern by designing, delegation, decision systems and calendar clarity. 27. Your role is not to do more, but to do differently. 27.
