[00:00:01] Welcome back to MSME Growth Hub Podcast. I am your host Abanibhusan Bera and today we are diving into a crucial yet often overlooked step in branding, asking yourself the right questions before starting your brand building journey. Many MSME jump into branding by designing logos, creating websites and running ads without first defining who they are, what they stand for and how they want to be perceived.

[00:00:28] Branding is not just about visuals, it's about positioning, consistency and creating trust. So today I will walk you through the key questions you must answer before launching your brand to ensure it stands out, connects with your audience and drives long term success. Let's get started. Why asking the right questions is crucial for branding.

[00:00:54] Branding Branding Branding isn't just about how your business looks, it's about how it makes people feel and what it represents. Many MSM's struggle with branding because they rush into marketing without a clear identity, try to appeal to everyone instead of a specific audience, lack consistency in their messaging leading to confusion.

[00:01:19] So a strong brand starts with clarity. The more precise you are about your brand's foundation, the stronger your market presence will be. Now I will dive into the 7 key questions to ask before starting your branding journey. Question 1. What does my brand stand for? Your brand values define your identity.

[00:01:49] They are what differentiate you from competitors and build an emotional connection with customers. Ask yourself these 3 questions. What principles are non-negotiable for my business? Second, what impact do I want my business to have? And third, how do I want customers to describe my brand?

[00:02:14] Now, before I walk you through an example, let me share something important. When it comes to branding, a lot of MSME entrepreneurs struggle with this very first question. What does my brand stand for? I get it. When you are branding a business, it's easy to focus on sales, marketing and operations while branding takes a backseat.

[00:02:43] But your brand identity is what creates long-term trust, differentiation and customer loyalty. Now, rather than giving you a general definition, let me share my own thought process behind building MSME Growth Hub as a brand.

[00:03:05] Why? Because I have personally gone through this journey and I know exactly how important it is to define your brand values with absolute clarity. So, let me take you behind the scenes and walk you through how I answered this for my own business. And don't worry, after this, I will be sharing examples from different industries so you can see how diverse businesses approach branding.

[00:03:34] But for this first question, I believe using my own journey will give you a real-world step-by-step perspective. So, here is how I approached this for MSME Growth Hub. I asked myself, what principles are non-negotiable for my business?

[00:04:04] At MSME Growth Hub, integrity is the foundation of everything we do. We believe in honesty, transparency and ethical business practices, whether it's delivering content, offering courses or advising MSME entrepreneurs. For example, we don't believe in quick-fix tactics or misleading growth promises.

[00:04:32] If an MSME needs 3 years to reach its 2x revenue growth milestone, we make that clear. No false hopes, only real strategies. Why this matters? In the coaching and business consulting industry, where flashy marketing often overshadows real value, MSME Growth Hub stands as a beacon of authenticity.

[00:05:00] 2. What impact do I want my business to have? I asked that question myself. The mission of MSME Growth Hub is not just to grow businesses, it's to create a ripple effect of economic impact and job creation. For example, a single MSME that grows successfully doesn't just benefit the founder.

[00:05:30] It creates more jobs, stabilizes families and contributes to India's economic development. So, our vision? Help MSME entrepreneurs create long-term, scalable businesses. Equip them with sales, branding and operational strategies that drive sustainable growth.

[00:05:53] Foster a community where MSMEs thrive together, support each other and unlock massive opportunities. Why this matters? Many MSMEs struggle alone and lack proper guidance.

[00:06:09] By creating a strong learning and support ecosystem, MSME Growth Hub enables business owners to succeed, not just in revenue growth but in their ability to impact their industry and community. 3. How do I want customers to describe my brand? Growth-oriented with a mindset of serving. That's exactly what MSME Growth Hub represents.

[00:06:38] For example, when an MSME entrepreneur interacts with our content, takes a course or joins our community, we want them to feel empowered, supported and equipped with real strategies to scale their business. What we want people to say about MSME Growth Hub is this. This is not just another coaching program. It's a movement.

[00:07:06] Everything taught here is practical, actionable and results-driven. Aboni is not just selling courses. He is genuinely invested in MSME's success. Why this matters? The best brands don't just offer a product or service. They create a transformational experience. MSME Growth Hub is not just a business. It's a mission to uplift the MSME sector.

[00:07:35] Now that you have seen how I approached branding for MSME Growth Hub, let's take a look at how different industries apply this principle. Because branding is not a one-size-fits-all strategy. What works for a B2B company might be different from a retail business or a tech startup. So let's explore more examples from other industries. Say, a green packaging MSME.

[00:08:04] They can build its brand around eco-friendly materials and sustainability. This clear value proposition will help them attract environment-conscious businesses and will set them apart from traditional suppliers. So, the key takeaway for the question number one is, if you don't define what you stand for, your brand will lack direction. Question number two. Who is my ideal customer?

[00:08:34] Many MSMEs struggle with branding because they try to appeal to everyone. The strongest brands focus on a specific audience and craft their messaging accordingly. Ask yourself again the three questions. Who benefits the most from my product or service? What problems do they face that my business solves? Where do they spend time online and offline? Here is an example.

[00:09:01] A B2B software MSME can think of refining its branding to focus solely on manufacturing businesses instead of general industries. As a result, their messaging will become clearer and customer acquisition will surely improve by as high as 40%. So, the takeaway towards question number two is, if you try to sell to everyone, you sell to no one. Define your audience clearly.

[00:09:30] Question number three. What's my unique selling proposition? Your USP is why customers should choose you over competitors. Ask yourself the three questions here. What makes my product or service different? How do I solve my customer's problem better than the others? What is my comparative age? Here is an example.

[00:09:56] A system integrator for industrial automation can think of positioning itself as the MSME-friendly automation partner, making their brand more relatable to small manufacturers. So, the takeaway for question number three is, if you can't clearly state why your business is different, customers won't remember you. Question number four.

[00:10:23] What brand personality and tone do I want? Your brand's personality and tone shape how customers emotionally connect with you. Ask yourself, should my brand be professional, friendly, or authoritative? Do I want my messaging to be formal or conversational? How do I want customers to fail when they interact with my brand?

[00:10:53] Example here could be, a B2B logistics MSME can think of switching its branding from corporate heavy messaging to a practical approachable tone helping it connect better with small business owners. So, the takeaway for question number four is, your tone should match your target audience and industry. Question number five.

[00:11:19] What visual identity best represents my brand? Your logo, colors, and design create instant brand recognition. Ask yourself, what emotions do I want my brand colors to evoke? Does my logo reflect my brand's core identity? Is my visual identity aligned with my industry? Here is an example I can think of. Say you are an organic food machine.

[00:11:49] You may choose earthy green and brown tones for branding to emphasize nature and sustainability, helping you stand out in the grocery market. So, the takeaway for question number five is, your visual identity should reinforce your brand's core message. Question number six. How will I build brand trust?

[00:12:16] Branding isn't just about marketing, it's about delivering on your promises consistently. Ask yourself the three questions again, how will I ensure consistent customer experience? Next, how will I build credibility? Testimonials, case studies, partnerships? How can I turn my customers into brand advocates? Here is an example I can think of now.

[00:12:47] B2B industrial supplier can build trust by featuring client success stories on their website and sharing testimonials. This will surely lead to a 20% increase in inquiries. So, the takeaway for question number six is, brand trust is built through consistency, transparency and delivering value. Question number seven. What is my brand growth plan?

[00:13:17] A brand is not static. It evolves as your business grows. So, ask yourself, how will I expand my brand in one year, three years or five years? Will I introduce new products, services under the same brand or sub-brands? How will I adapt a market brand change? Here is an example.

[00:13:39] A clothing MSMU who has started with ethnic wear can think of gradually expanding into accessories and footwear, keeping a consistent brand identity. So, the takeaway for question number seven and that's the last in our list is, a long-term vision ensures your brand stays relevant and competitive. So, here are the final thoughts and key takeaways.

[00:14:09] Before you start branding, clarity is key. Here are the seven questions every MSMU must answer. One, what does my brand stand for? Define your core values. Two, who is my ideal customer? Be specific about your target audience. Three, what is my USP? Clearly communicate why you are different. Four, what's my brand personality and tone? Ensure it resonates with your customers. Five, what's my visual identity?

[00:14:38] Make sure it reflects your brand's essence. Six, how will I build brand trust? Consistency is equal to credibility. And number seven, what's my long-term brand growth plan? Think beyond today. So, your next step. Want to learn how to craft a powerful brand strategy for your MSME? Join my AI-powered MSME Growth Hub Community today for just 999 rupees.
