[00:00:10] This is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. I am your host Swati Ajad and these are the major news stories of Monday, Jan 27, 2025. The Joint Parliamentary Committee reviewing the Waqqf Amendment Bill on Monday approved all amendments proposed by the ruling BJP-led NDA members. At the same time, the committee rejected every modification suggested by the opposition. The committee chairman Jagadabhika Pal told reporters after the meeting that amendments adopted by the committee will make the law better

[00:00:39] and more effective. One of the more significant amendments proposed by the committee is the removal of the provision allowing Waqqf properties to be questioned on the grounds of Waqqf by user. This provision exists in the current law but will be omitted in the new version, provided the properties are being used for religious purposes. Uttarakhand made history on Monday by becoming the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code fulfilling a key promise made by the ruling BJP.

[00:01:06] During the 2022 Assembly election campaign, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Thami announced the implementation, unveiled the notification and introduced the rules for the UCC. A dedicated portal for the mandatory online registration of marriages, divorces and live-in relationships was also launched as part of the initiative. The UCC is based on the vision of a single set of laws for all citizens regardless of religion as outlined in Article 44 of the Constitution.

[00:01:33] U.S. President Donald Trump announced sweeping retaliatory measures against Colombia on Sunday. The actions include tariffs and sanctions after Colombia refused entry to two U.S. military aircraft carrying migrants being deported. Colombia, the third largest U.S. trading partner in Latin America, swiftly responded threatening a 50% tariff on U.S. goods. The country's leftist president, Gustavo Petro, later posted on Ex that he directed his trade minister to increase tariffs on U.S. imports by 25%.

[00:02:02] The retaliatory measures announced by Trump include a 25% tariff on all Colombian goods entered in the U.S., set to increase to 50% in one week, a travel ban and visa revocations for Colombian government officials, emergency sanctions on Colombia's treasury, banking and financial sectors. Additionally, Trump stated he would direct enhanced border inspections of Colombian nationals and cargo.

[00:02:26] Indian star Smriti Mantana has been named the ICC women's Ode Cricketer of the year 2024. The left-handed opener scored 747 runs from 13 innings in 2024. Mantana hit a record four Ode centuries last year at an average of 57.86. She hit 95 boundaries and 6 sixes in the Ode format last year. In June, Mantana scored consecutive centuries to power India to a 3-0 series win against South Africa.

[00:02:54] Another turn came in October in a series decided against New Zealand. In December, she hit 105 against Australia at the WACA in Perth. The man-eater tiger that terrorised the remote hamlets of Panjirakoli in Kerala's Vyanar district was found dead behind a house outside the forest on Monday morning. The carcass of the animal was found by the rapid response team around 6.30am.

[00:03:17] Forest officials confirmed that it was the same animal that claimed the life of tribal woman, Ratha, on January 24, while crossing a forest path. The post-mortem examination of the animal revealed that it died from deep wounds on its neck. The four fresh wounds were inflicted on Sunday night, likely during a fight with another tiger. The tiger is estimated to be between five and seven years old. That brings us to the end of this episode. Thanks for listening to Daily News Doors, hosted by me, Swati Ajit, and produced by Kannan.
