[00:00:09] Hello, this is your Daily Dose of News from Onmanorama. I am your host Vaishnavi and these are the major news stories of Friday, Feb 14, 2025. A US plane carrying 119 illegal immigrants is expected to land at Amritsar airport on Feb 15. The deportees include 67 from Punjab, 33 from Haryana and others from various states like Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

[00:00:36] This follows a previous deportation of 104 individuals, including 30, from Punjab last week. Political leaders in Punjab have criticized the government for the deportations. The state has launched an investigation into illegal human trafficking. The SIT has registered multiple FIIs against immigration consultants involved in fraudulent activities.

[00:00:58] During a key diplomatic meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump announced the approval of the extradition of Tahavur Rana, one of the conspirators of the 2008 Mumbai attacks to India. Trump emphasized the growing cooperation between India and the US in combating global radical Islamic terrorism, describing the extradition as a significant step.

[00:01:22] Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani descent, was involved in the attacks, which killed 175 people and was in contact with terrorist groups. 14 Palestinian children, many suffering from cancer, were flown to Italy for medical treatment. This is part of ongoing efforts to support victims of the Hamas-Israel conflict. The children and their families, totaling 45 people, crossed the Rafah border from Gaza into Egypt on Wednesday.

[00:01:52] They underwent medical checks in Cairo before being flown to Italy on an Italian military plane. This initiative is part of Italy's broader diplomatic efforts to foster peace and solidarity in the region, with several European countries participating in the medical evacuation of Gaza's children since the war began in October 2023. A Russian drone struck the radiation containment shelter at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant,

[00:02:18] causing significant damage and a fire that has since been extinguished, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Despite the damage, both Zelensky and the UN's energy watchdog confirmed that radiation levels remain normal. The Chernobyl plant, site of the 1986 nuclear disaster, has been a target of Russian forces since the early days of the invasion. The shelter, known as the new safe confinement, was completed in 2019 to contain the radiation from the destroyed reactor.

[00:02:48] Zelensky condemned Russia's actions highlighting the threat forced to nuclear security. The Kerala High Court has clarified the age-related restrictions for surrogacy under the Surrogacy Regulation Act 2021. Justice CSDS confirmed that women are eligible for surrogacy after turning 23 and until the day before their 50th birthday.

[00:03:11] The court ruled that these age limits set by the legislature cannot be extended as they are based on biological considerations for conception. The decision came while considering the case of a 46-year-old woman and her 52-year-old husband who sought surrogacy after unsuccessful IVF treatments. Despite identifying a surrogate mother, they were informed that they were ineligible due to the wife's age as she had already turned 50 according to official records.
