US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose significant tariffs with a 25% levy on goods imported from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on products from China.
[00:00:33] The move which could escalate tensions with these major trading partners is part of Trump's broader strategy to renegotiate trade terms, particularly in response to concerns about illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Canada and Mexico have warped to retaliate, while China has pledged to defend its interests. A Medivac plane operated by Jet Rescue Air Ambulance crashed shortly after take-off in Philadelphia.
[00:01:03] Six people were on board, four crew members, a young girl being transported for medical care and her mother, all Mexican nationals. The crash occurred in a populated area of the city and officials have confirmed fatalities and significant damage on the ground, including houses and cars set ablaze. The FAA is investigating the cause of the crash. The tragedy follows another recent fatal aviation accident in the US.
[00:01:31] Russia announced on Saturday that it had captured Krimsk, a village near the eastern Ukrainian city of Toresk, amid ongoing heavy fighting in the region. Despite significant losses, Russian forces are gradually advancing in the area. Meanwhile, Ukrainian authorities reported four deaths from overnight Russian strikes on Poltava and Kharkiv.
[00:01:53] In Poltava, a missile strike on a residential building killed at least three people and injured 13, while a Russian drone fell in Kharkiv, killing a woman and injuring four others. The Supreme Court is set to hear a public interest litigation on Monday that challenges the misuse of women-centric laws, including the Dowdy Prohibition Act, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act and provisions on cruelty to women in the Indian Penal Court.
[00:02:21] Filed by Roopshi Singh, the petition questions the validity of these laws, alleging they contain unreasonable provisions and allow false complaints, particularly against men. Finance Minister Nirmala Seetha Raman presented the first full budget of the current Modi government on Saturday. In a surprising move aimed at boosting consumption, the FM increased the rubate on income tax.
[00:02:45] Under the new tax regime, no income tax will be payable on incomes up to Rs 12 lakh, with the exemption limit extending to Rs 12.75 lakh for salaried individuals due to a standard deduction of Rs 75,000.
