[00:00:09] Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. I'm your host Swati Ajad and these are the major news stories of Thursday, January 30, 2025. Scores of people were feared dead after a tragic mid-air collision near Reagan Washington National Airport. An American Airlines regional passenger jet carrying 64 people crashed into the frigid Potomac River after colliding with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter. Officials have not yet confirmed the number of casualties.
[00:00:37] However, U.S. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas, from where the flight originated, suggested that most, if not all, on board may have lost their lives. American Airlines confirmed 60 passengers and four crew members were aboard the jet. The helicopter on a training flight was carrying three soldiers, a U.S. official said. U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he would direct the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security to prepare a migrant detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
[00:01:07] The facility is expected to hold up to 30,000 migrants. Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. naval base in Cuba, already has a migrant facility separate from the high-security prison for terrorism suspects. Trump announced an executive order to prepare a 30,000-percent migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay. He said the facility would detain the worst criminal illegal aliens who pose a threat to Americans. According to Trump, some are so dangerous that the U.S. does not trust their home countries to hold them.
[00:01:37] India is set to make a major leap in artificial intelligence by developing its own large-language model similar to ChatGPT and DeepSeek. Union Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnav announced that the AI model would be ready in 10 months, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in AI. Speaking at the Utkash Odisha Conclave, Vaishnav stated that the groundwork for the AI model has already been laid. The framework is ready and the government is now focused on building a system tailored to the unique needs of Indian users.
[00:02:07] A Canadian Commission report has stated that no definitive link to a foreign state was proven in the killing of Canadian Sikh activist, Hardeep Singh Nijar. The finding undermines Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of Indian involvement. In September 2023, Trudeau claimed that Canada had credible evidence suggesting Indian government agents were involved in Nijar's murder in British Columbia. Nijar was gunned down in Surrey, British Columbia in June 2023. The 123-page report also talked of expelling six Indian diplomats.
[00:02:37] The relations between India and Canada came under severe strain following Prime Minister Trudeau's allegations in September last year of the potential involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Nijar. The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside the Kerala High Court's order for state authorities to take over six churches from the Jacobite faction. The court directed that these churches be handed over to the Malankara Orthodox faction. The Apex Court expressed concerns about police intervention in religious places.
[00:03:04] It remitted the matter back to the High Court for fresh consideration. A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice N. Koti, Shwar Singh emphasised the need for the High Court to reassess the contempt petitions related to the dispute. The bench clarified that it had not commented on the merits of the case and left it to the High Court to arrive at an independent decision. It also extended the interim relief granted to state officers from appearing in the contempt petitions. That brings us to the end of this episode.
