[00:00:09] Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama. I am your host Vaishnavi and these are the major news stories of Saturday, January 18, 2025. An additional district in Sessions Court in Kolkata found Sanjay Roy guilty of raping and murdering a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in hospital. Judge Anirban Das delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused and the victim's parents with a sentence to be pronounced on January 20.
[00:00:39] Roy was convicted under various actions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanita. Despite his claims of being framed, the CBI successfully proved the charges against him. Due to sub-freezing temperature forecast for January 20, President-elect Donald Trump will take the oath of office inside the Capitol Rotunda, marking the first time in 40 years that a president's inauguration will not be held on the Capitol steps.
[00:01:05] Most visitors will be unable to witness the ceremony in person, but arrangements are being made to accommodate some attendees at Washington's Pro Basketball and Hockey Arena. Israel's Cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hamas, focusing on the release of hostages and an end to the 15-month-old war in Gaza. The agreement is set to begin on Sunday, with the framework for hostages release coming into effect then.
[00:01:33] However, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza continued even after the deal was reached, killing five people early on Saturday. The White House expects the ceasefire to start on Sunday morning, with three female hostages to be released through the Red Cross. The ISRO successfully demonstrated the restarting of its Vicas liquid engine at the propulsion complex in Mahindra Giri, a key milestone for the development of reusable launch-to-vehicle technologies.
[00:02:00] The test involved firing the engine for 60 seconds, followed by a 120-second shutdown and a restart for seven seconds. All engine parameters were normal during the test. ISRO had previously conducted a successful shorter-duration restart in December 2024. Further tests are planned to optimise engine performance. BCCI announced the 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy and the three-match ODI series against England.
[00:02:30] Rohit Sharma will captain the team, with Shubmam Gill as his deputy. Jaspreet Bumrah was selected subject to fitness and Harshid Rana will cover for him in the England series. Newcomer Yash Espi Jaiswal earned his maiden ODI call-up. The rest of the team includes Kuldeep Yadav, Bumrah, Mohamed Shami and Arushdeep Singh, with Mohamed Suraj missing out. In spin, Ravindra Jadeja, Aksar Patel and Washington Sundar are competing for spots.
[00:02:55] The middle-order try of KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Shrey Sire remains unchanged, with Rishabh Pant as the backup wicket-keeper. That brings us to the end of this episode.
