[00:00:10] Hello, this is your Daily Dose of News from Onmanorama. I'm your host Vaishnavi and these are the major news stories of Wednesday, Dec 25, 2024.
[00:00:22] A passenger plane travelling from Baku to Grosny crashed near Kazakhstan's Aktau airport on Wednesday after requesting an emergency landing.
[00:00:31] The aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines had 67 people on board, including 62 passengers and 5 crew members.
[00:00:39] Kazakhstan's Emergency Ministry reported that 30 people are likely dead while 32 survivors were rescued from the crash.
[00:00:49] On Tuesday, Pakistan launched rare airstrikes targeting suspected Pakistani Taliban hideouts in Afghanistan, Pakhtika province, dismantling a training facility and killing some insurgents.
[00:01:01] The strikes, which were carried out in a mountainous area near the border, have sparked controversy.
[00:01:06] The Afghan Defence Ministry condemned the attack, claiming it targeted civilians, including women and children.
[00:01:13] Local residents reported at least eight deaths, with the toll expected to rise.
[00:01:17] This marks the second such attack since March following earlier intelligence-based strikes by Pakistan and Afghanistan's border regions.
[00:01:27] Sanjeeb Vazid, the son of deposed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has accused the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government of weaponising the judiciary to conduct a political witch hunt against the Awami League leadership.
[00:01:40] Vazid, a US-based IT entrepreneur and former ICT advisor, condemned the judicial process, calling it a farcical trial, and accused the Yunus-led regime of persecuting Awami League leaders.
[00:01:52] Vazid's remarks came after the interim government sought Hazina's extradition from India, where she has been living since fleeing Bangladesh in August, following a student-led protest that overthrew her 16-year regime.
[00:02:05] A day after Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar was appointed the new governor of Kerala, replacing Arif Mohamad Khan, CPM came out with a scathing attack against the outgoing governor.
[00:02:17] Parties' state secretary MV Govindan said Khan was engaging in unconstitutional activities to implement the sankh Pariwar agenda.
[00:02:25] Khan will now serve as the governor of Bihar.
[00:02:28] Arlekar, a BJP leader from Goa, previously served as the governor of Himachal Pradesh and was the 29th governor of Bihar.
[00:02:35] Govindan said the media was glorifying Khan.
[00:02:38] He said many see Khan's opposition to the left government and alleged attempts to implement the sankh Pariwar agenda as hypocritical.
[00:02:45] Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the Khan-Baitwar River Link project in Ghajravo, Madhya Pradesh on December 25.
[00:02:55] He also inaugurated the Om Kureshwar floating solar project virtually.
[00:03:00] The River Link project, estimated at Rs 44,605 crore, aims to provide drinking water to nearly 44 lakh people in Madhya Pradesh and 21 lakh in Uttar Pradesh, while benefiting 7 lakh agricultural families in 2,000 villages.
[00:03:15] The project will also generate 103 MW of hydropower and 27 MW of solar energy.
[00:03:24] That brings us to the end of this episode.
