[00:00:00] Hello, this is your daily dose of news from Onmanorama.
[00:00:14] I am your host Vartiya Jit and these are the major news stories of Sunday, April 21, 2024.
[00:00:23] Israeli strikes in the southern Gaza city of Rafa overnight killed 13 people, including
[00:00:27] nine children, health officials said as the United States was on track to approve billions
[00:00:31] of dollars of additional military aid to its close ally.
[00:00:36] Manipur chief electoral officer announced repoling at 11 polling stations in the inner
[00:00:41] Manipur Lok Sabha constituency on April 22.
[00:00:44] The decision follows a directive from the election commission to declare the polls
[00:00:47] held at these stations on April 19 as null and void owing to incidents of firing,
[00:00:52] intimidation, destructions of EVMs at some polling booths.
[00:00:57] With the midst of controversies surrounding the health of detained Delhi Chief Minister
[00:01:00] Aravind Kejriwal, the ARP asserted on Sunday that there is a plot to harm the CM while
[00:01:05] in prison.
[00:01:08] Voters in the Maldives flocked to the polls on Sunday in a parliamentary election
[00:01:11] that made it a mine, where the Indian Ocean island nation continues its shift towards
[00:01:15] China and away from its longstanding ties with India.
[00:01:20] With the crucial Lok Sabha polls just five days away in the state, Kerala Chief Minister
[00:01:24] Aravind Kejriwal, who is also the leader of the Maldives, has also been
[00:01:28] accused of trying to cover up the progress achieved by the state with lies.
[00:01:32] Let's get to the details.
[00:01:36] Israeli strikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah overnight killed 13 people,
[00:01:40] including nine children, held the official set on Sunday as the United States was
[00:01:44] on track to approve billions of dollars of additional military aid to its close ally.
[00:01:48] Israel has carried out near-daily air raids on Rafah where more than half of
[00:01:52] Gaza's population of 2.3 million has sought refuge from fighting elsewhere.
[00:01:56] The Israel-Hamas war has killed over 34,000 Palestinians, according to local health
[00:02:00] officials, devastated Gaza's two largest cities and left a swath of destruction
[00:02:04] across the territory. Around 80% of the population have fled their homes to other
[00:02:08] parts of the besieged coastal enclave, which experts say is on the brink of
[00:02:12] famine.
[00:02:16] Manipur Chief Electoral Officer on Saturday announced repoling at 11 polling
[00:02:20] stations in the inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency on April 22.
[00:02:24] The decision follows a directive from the election commission to declare the polls
[00:02:28] held at these stations on April 19 as null and void and schedule fresh
[00:02:32] polling. Incidents of firing, intimidation, destruction of EVMs
[00:02:36] at some polling booths and allegations of booth-capsling were reported from
[00:02:40] conflict-hit Manipur that recorded a turnout of 72% in the two Lok Sabha
[00:02:44] constituencies, inner Manipur and outer Manipur, on Friday.
[00:02:48] Following the row over the health of incarcerated Delhi Chief Minister Aravind
[00:02:52] Kejriwal, the AAP once alleged that there is a conspiracy to kill the CM in
[00:02:56] prison. Addressing a press conference, AAP leader and Delhi minister Swara
[00:03:00] Bharatwaj said that there are two sides. One is the AAP side in which
[00:03:04] Aravind Kejriwal, who has been diabetic for the last 22 years, has set
[00:03:08] his on insulin for the last 12 years. Conversely, he pointed out that
[00:03:12] the assertions made by the BJP-led central government and the Harjal
[00:03:16] authorities are both about the AAP's rapidly stable health and dispute in
[00:03:18] the residue of insulin administration. Bharatwaj accused the BJP and
[00:03:22] the Harjal authorities of orchestrating a conspiracy against Kejriwal,
[00:03:26] citing a recent letter between the Harjal Director General and Ames
[00:03:30] regarding the need for a diabetes specialist.
[00:03:34] Voters in the Maldives flocked to the polls on Sunday in a parliamentary
[00:03:38] election that made it germine whether the Indian Ocean Island nation continues its shift towards
[00:03:42] India. Beijing and New Delhi have both voted the Maldives as the two giants
[00:03:46] V for influence in the Indo-Pacific region. President Mohammed Musu,
[00:03:50] elected last year, has pledged to end the country's India First Policy,
[00:03:54] putting relations under strain. His government has asked dozens of
[00:03:58] locally based Indian military personnel to leave in a move critics warn could see
[00:04:02] the Maldives shift closer to China. Opposition parties criticising Musu's
[00:04:06] government on areas including foreign policy and the economy are seeking a
[00:04:10] security that can hold the government accountable.
[00:04:14] With the crucial Lok Sabha polls just five days away in the state, Kerala
[00:04:18] Chief Minister Pindra Vijayan on Sunday intensified his attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi
[00:04:22] and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accusing them of attempting to cover up the
[00:04:26] progress has achieved by the state with lies. Modi and Gandhi have a similar
[00:04:30] voice while speaking against the southern state, he told a press conference in Kanjangadur
[00:04:34] in Kastragod. A strange phenomenon is happening now in which the
[00:04:38] Prime Minister and the all-India leader of the main opposition party are trying in
[00:04:42] unison to cover up the state and the progress it achieved with lies, the Chief Minister
[00:04:46] alleged. Targeting Modi for his recent remarks against the state government, Vijayan
[00:04:50] said the Prime Minister had mentioned the other day that corruption thrives in Kerala
[00:04:54] like in Bihar.
